after the president removes the prime minister from office rising corbett cases and a population that is barely vaccinated. democratic republic of congo health system is again under threat in sport, a record number of english premier league players and staff of tested positive for cobra. 19 manchester united a bark playing their 1st game in more than 2 weeks following a corona virus outbreak within their school. ah, we begin in myanmar where the military offensive against ethnic karen armed groups is intensifying and civilians are increasingly caught in the crossfire sh for years . these groups are fought for self determination. and since the military took control in a cool early this year, the groups have joined forces united against the common enemy. well, in the past few days, the military camp has gathered pace and the government has been accused of
12:02 am
committing atrocities against civilians. and as the casualties mount more and more people are seeking refuge in thailand. well, the korean people live mainly in calion state in the southeastern part of me and my heavy fighting has been reported around the town of my why the about 5000 people have fled across the river into my soul to in thailand, from where tony chain sent us this report, the small arms and automatic gunfire echo across the banks. the river concise, me in a plume of dark smoke rising after not tillery strike, a few 100 meters away on the tie side and make shift shelter for refugees who fled across the river. for the moment, they don't want to move too far away so they can monitor what's happening in their homes. they can also hear the ferocity of the fighting. so it's obviously in the
12:03 am
market situation is very bad. they're using helicopters to drop bombs and all had to run to survive the children and adults to get into the site. it's not safe to go home because they are playing or hate to teen. we don't feel safe to go back. the border police and thailand say the fighting, broke out at dawn as it has done to the last 2 days. now, the time military have returned fire on a number of occasions. just warning shots, they say, some munitions have fallen on the tie side. this farmer, pointing out damage from shrapnel of the several motors fell in his fields. those wounded in the crossfire have come across to thailand for treatment. as have thousands of refugees, a number that's growing every day. main common in the last 2 or 3 days, they have been serious clashes with planes attacking villages. and there been several wounded people crossing over the border to get treatment. but thailand is not keen to encourage people to cross. this is one of the places where people have
12:04 am
been coming across, but the tie army had put res was all across the top of the bank of the river for the moment that pretty happy to stay over there. ready to come across the border. the fighting gets any closer. children play on the river bank as the evening sets in. but the battle is that a raging along the river between yemen military and armed qur'an groups, shows no sign of letting up or letting them return home. tony cheng al jazeera on the time, me on my border or the chain of events which led to this latest escalation began in february, just a few months after uncensored. she's national league for democracy, sweat to power. the military took control and detained sushi, as well as members of our government within days, protest her as were on the streets, demanding her release, and of return to civilian rule. a campaign of civil disobedience began, which triggered a deadly crack down by security forces. in march,
12:05 am
the un security council called for a reversal of the military coup condemning the military's violence against peaceful protest hers. 5 months later, military leader general min hung lying declared himself prime minister, promising elections by 2023. and this month announce uncensored. she was found guilty of inciting descent and breaking coven rules. she was sentence that 254 years in jail, which was then cut to 2. she is still waiting on a verdict on other charges or tom andrews is the you and special repertoire on human rights in me and marnie joins us live now from virginia in the united states . sir, thank you so much for joining us here on al jazeera. we'll talk about here, but let's start up with a guest. we called the escalation or vice of for violence. certainly, the violins are getting worse between the military and ethnic karin, armed groups from what you know of the area. what do you make of that escalation?
12:06 am
well it's, it's very, very dangerous that we know that the fighting is, is increasing when are the tensions have increased? and we know that attacks against entire villages have also increased. so the number of innocent men, women, and children that are facing a catastrophe, of course, increases almost exponentially. which of course is, is exactly what we're, what we're fearing. it's, it's there on the tie border, but it's also in other areas of the, of the country as the military tries to seek out villages where that they believe are harboring opponents armed opponents. and they're punishing all these villagers because they believe they are the enemy. so it's a very, very warrant worrying a development, and it's only intensifying with time. and speaking of time, i mean we're about 2 months away for from the one year anniversary, if you will, of the military coup. and then in march, the security council called for a reversal all the cool was still to see any sign that toward that. i mean,
12:07 am
how do you envision any kind of breaking of the deadlock of what the situation that we're seeing now and me and my well, i think frankly that the international community just has to do more. i think the kind of atrocities that we're seeing in me and more are only going to intensify and in time. and i think what's important is that men on lying, the leader of the hunter and, and his, his colleagues understand that the international community is simply not going to allow this a to continue with impunity. i think it's because of the lack of holding him accountable. that's led to all of this. so for example, i think he needs money to continue these assaults. he needs weapons to continuously these a soft, and he needs legitimacy. he's looking for international legitimacy. i think it's really important that we increase the ability of the international community to cut off revenue streams, going to the hunter that we cut off weapons, and that we make sure that we do not in any way legitimize this illegal regime.
12:08 am
these are the 3 keys that is important for them, that is the hunter to stay in power. and those are 3 leverage points that the international community can conceive. and i think we need to see them a lot more aggressive. what do you think of the main stumbling blocks of blocks towards that happening? and when you speak of the international community, there is obviously a different dynamic between the immediate neighbors of me and martha regional powers. and i suppose the sort of at the main, a western powers, especially within the security council, were clearly those of neighboring me and more have the most at stake here. because as you reported the, the pressure on the, the, the border of me and more is just gonna increase as people desperately try to escape with with their lives. so they have the most at stake. but listen, this is a, a regional conflict that has international implications of the general assembly of the united nations is called for all nations, for example,
12:09 am
to stop the flow of weapons going into me. and more of that has simply not happened . we know that there are countries that are willing like the u. k, the united states, canada, the e u, that have made very strong statements against this crew. but what we've yet to see is all those nations come together in a coordinated fashion to stop the revenue streams going into the pockets of the hunter that allowed him to continue this, this reign of terror. so i think what we have to do is take the foundation of support that we have for strong action, intensify and build upon that support and do what we can to eliminate the ability of this hunter to continue a train of terror against the people with me assuming if that does happen, it's obviously going to take her quite some time. and in the meantime, we're seeing thousands of people escape from me and my this time at to thailand. we're also hearing that talent has put a barbed wire across the river to stop people escaping to the country. what would
12:10 am
your message be to thailand? i think it's really important that, that all people in this region, all the neighbors of, of me and more of be prepared to provide a safe haven for people who are just who are absolutely desperate the richly in a very, very dangerous situation. and we as an entire international community need to be there to, to support those people and save those people and those countries that are on the, on the border. i need the full support of the international community as these conditions continue to worsen. and as we see more and more people are running for their lives, i think the key here is to get at the root of this problem, which is the hunter itself. and we need to work very much, much harder to increase the pressure on this one to, to stop its attack on ins. when the co 1st happened back in february 2020 of the site at 2021. there was a lot of reaction from the people of me and mar,
12:11 am
had themselves out of fighting against her, or at least peacefully demonstrating, and then facing the military arrests of the genta. there was a tension initially and then that attention seemed to wayne from the international community. i mean, obviously this cove at lots of other things that we all know are going on right now, but has the international community failed me and my by taking its days away from what's happening there? yes. in a word. yes i, i believe so. i mean that the horror, the terror inside of me and more has, has only gotten worse, not, not better. and yet you're right at the very outset of this when the, when the, when the qu occurred, or the attention to the world was on was on me and more. and i, and i think frankly the, the, the massive demonstrations of millions of people all across the country, peacefully demonstrating, calling for the end of this qu, capture the, the hearts and the attention in the imaginations of people. what's happening now, or there are millions of people continuing to engage in that protest. they've
12:12 am
established citizen sanctions, for example, to cut off their own revenue. they're, they're not paying their, their withholding taxes. they're withholding payments of, of, of energy bills. they're not buying anything. it's remotely connected to the hunter, and there were demonstrations that continue across this country, but this is all outside of the attention of the international community. and therefore, the military has been, i think the hunter believes that it can simply withstand, with, with this, this pressure from inside the country. hoping that the international community loosens its attention and allows it to get away with these atrocities the people of me and more. they have the country of me and more in their hands, but they need the international community to help and support them. and we can't, we can't divert our attention away. um, from the incredible situation unfolding before our very eyes commanders, un special repertoire on human rights in myanmar joining us from virginia in the us, sir. thank you. thank you,

deputy secretary general and post coordinator and recon mora says hard work in the days and weeks ahead should lead to a positive result. he wouldn't speculate on target dates for an agreement, but suggest that it could take weeks rather than months. well, this is the 8th thrones of talks designed to resurrect the 2015 nuclear deal known as the joint comprehensive plan of action. the accord began to disintegrate in 2018 when the u. s. with grew and began imposing sanctions on iran. iran says that discussions need to focus on the lifting of sanctions, including the ability to easily export its oil and on guarantees of the u. s. will return to the fold. the u. s. negotiator says there are only weeks left to revive the agreement if iran continues its current pace of nuclear activities. but the coordination of the talks, things that is possible. we have co, my loan lo ways is the beginning of the negotiation. now we have incorporated the sensitivity of a new iranian government. so from the point of view of the coordinator,

the final round of the negotiations. and of course, we are here because the united states left a deal in 2018 and impose a series of crippling sanctions on iraq or the banking sector. the radian foreign minister, entire on monday said that that is the 1st thing they really want to see remedy. they want to see those sanctions lifted so they can sell their oil on the international market yet again and be paid for it. the process of the way these are looking for to is very specific. and i asked that question to the lead the chief negotiator here in vienna, from the iranians, the deputy for mister alibaba, connie, and this was his response very much. that was, in my opinion, it's been a good beginning all sides emphasize the importance of lifting sanctions and the issue of verification and guarantee should be on the agenda. so based on this, it was a great the 1st issue that's going to be on the agenda in this round is the issue of guarantees and verification. and then the working groups will continue their
