5:00 pm
[000:00:00;00] a a, a a protesters of all ages return to the streets and sedans, capsule, prompting police to fire tear gas. i'm okay. ah . hello, i am sammy's aiden. this is al jazeera live from dell hall, so coming up,
5:01 pm
you covey case. his world wide surpass $1000000.00 a day for the 1st time would be on the chrome varian causing havoc. we report on the plight of thousands in northwest me and mart fleeing, unrelenting attacks by the military and traditional bath houses, making a comeback in war torn syria will tell you why we begin in sudan, where security forces at fire tear gas that protest is in the capital cartoon, ah, thousands of people have been rally across the country. they want to transition to civilian rule for the army to give up power. phone and internet services have been shut down. there's been mass protest since the military coup in october. i'm a val,
5:02 pm
it's more from car to it's very different scenario from what happened last saturday . and the, the protest that happened also week before that. today we're seeing less and less protest as being able to break through the lines of defense that have been created or erected by security forces. the bridges are still protected. they could not cause any of the bridges leading to the central area of cartoon in father cartoon, which is an area that has no bridges separating it from the presidential pollies. they'll have been a few attempts to cross that a way that leads them closer to the presidential poly. that makes them or gets them about one and a half kilometers away from presidential polish. but they are not able to get any closer ad for the protesters that they always bet on the capacity to be next to the for this,
5:03 pm
for probably so that they can deliver their messages or protests in the other parts of come to them and undermine. and battery, they got the bigger numbers, but also they could not cross the bridges in the, in the port in the port sedan city of the red sea region. there have been also a considerable number of protest us today. let's bring in cameron hudson, he's a non resident senior fellow at the atlantic council joins us by skype from miami. good to have you with us. so 1st of all, looking at the fact that these demonstrations have continued for the 11th day. now that say that the authorities well miscalculated on the 25th of october. absolutely, i think that we've seen repeated miscalculations by the military, both in terms of their underestimating the power and the perseverance of the protest movement in cartoon and across the country. ah,
5:04 pm
but also i think the resilience of this, of this group and the international community to, to stand up to the military. and this qu, so we've not really seen any kind of movement on the side of the protest movement in terms of giving in. and if anything their resolve has been ah fortified and what we've seen from the military um is more and more, i think draconian measures more effort to seize an increasing amount of power within the country. essentially, undermining the what is left of the transition at, at every stage. how much of a threat to the army, all the protest becoming well, i think that the threat is really in the potential for miscalculation. and so if you see the protesters again get too close to the presidential palace to the army headquarters. this could turn violent very quickly, both on the side of the protesters or on the side of the military. again,
5:05 pm
this entire protest and response of the protest has been marked by miscalculations up to this point. and so i think when you see as many people in the street as angry as they are, and when you see them basing off with the military time and time again, clearly the military is nervous. they're taking extra efforts at every stage of these protests to try to undermine and limit the protest. so you talked about earlier, the containers that were blocking bridges, the cutting of telecommunications. you know, these sorts of measures to try to limit the physical protest movement. i think is just a further demonstration of how fearful the military is that you could see another kind of sit in where the protesters arrive at the presidential palace and then decide not to leave. and you have a more permanent stand off where i think, you know, there could be real potential for violence and any progress taking place
5:06 pm
in talks which were happening at least at one point. well, i think one of the challenges here is that there is no international mediation effort, neither the un, the african union, or any other, you know, powerful outside actor, whether it be saudi arabia or the united states. no one has stepped forward to try to help build bridges between not only the military and the civilians, but the civilians and the political parties and the, and the pro democracy protesters. so you have a very cohesive unit on one side in the military. and i think you have a very diffuse and bifurcated protest movement on the other side among no st. protestors and political parties. and they really haven't coalesced into a, a strong movement that as a unified group can really stand up to the power of the military. so it's going to take, i think, international mediation that is respected and a credible by both sides to,
5:07 pm
to come in and to try to forge some political pathways forward. right now, everything we understand has been very kind of ad hoc behind the scenes. but, but, but also because it has been domestically led, i think the people who have volunteered to be mediators domestically also have their own agendas in trying to move forward a political solution. and so i think what we need is some outside intervention, some outside mediation that doesn't have a stake, only a stake in protecting people and finding a stable path ahead proceed. and that has not yet emerged. all right, thanks so much. cameron hudson with $1000000.00 current virus cases in a single day, more reco breaking infections, another year ending with countries struggling to cope for the biggest health crisis of our times. and sir, head over to the united states. mike hannon joins us now from washington. d. c. so
5:08 pm
what are officials saying there about this surge? well, it's a massive surge. indeed. sammy or infection rates are rising sharply throughout the entire united states in the district of columbia, where i am, for example, there are 2 and a half 1000 infections were recorded in the past 24 hours. now that doesn't seem like a high figure, but this represents an increase of some 900 percent since the same rate of infection 2 weeks ago. so this is a massive search and a few extrapolate that across the country. you can see exactly how massive the search is. also a big point of concern as well, is the rising infection rates among children, particularly those add to the age of 5 who cannot be inoculated or cannot receive the vaccine. those figures are showing an increase of some 58 percent in terms of
5:09 pm
childhood admission to hospitals. so all of these factors combining together to create an extremely grim picture in terms of the situation throughout the united states. and mike testing is becoming a challenge. talk about that squall. testing is a major challenge health experts point out that in order to track the variance, the delta and the army kron variance, it is essential to get a coherent testing protocol in place while the bite and administration had promised . since it came to paula how that testing was not going to be a problem? well, that has not been the case is been a supply chain issue in terms of at home test kits. the biden administration had promised that all american households would have testing kits to use at home that has not yet transpired. they are now saying that that may happened within the next few weeks. but the point about the testing is very important. obviously in terms of
5:10 pm
you can find out whether or not you are infected. there is another issue here as well though, is that many of the at home a tests the anti gen tests are do not pick up the on the chrome variance or they will test at negative as should you have on the chrome. so this, all these kind of issues being involved and basically health experts are struggling to keep up with understanding how the various work. understanding how ami kron is different from delta understanding where the different testing protocols have got to be applied. all of these issues coming together to at the stage create a rather obscured vision of how the her had demick is tracking within the united states. and it's something that health experts are struggling to keep up with because they need to clear the data in terms of being able to track how the various variants are moving through the country. all right, mike, hanover, thanks so much. escape not they. now, on the situation in the u. k,
5:11 pm
with rory challenz. yeah, the most recent figure is wednesday for the new cases of current of virus in the u . k. 183008 huge number. the biggest of the pandemic so far by quite a long way. there is context for that that $183000.00 number does include several days of backlog of data carried over from the holiday period. basically, 5 days worth of ticket is coming out of northern audit, but still it is frightening amounts of people, affronting number of people currently tested positive for right of ours. and yes, the big question is, what impact is this having on the national health serve as well? and it just england says that there are now more than 10000 people in their hospitals suffering from corona virus at the moment. and that is the only the kind

of 10000 full part figure that they have given as being when things start to get worried. and when the system starts to creek, when dr. stock being overburdened, etc. so they are planning on building temporary structures in a hospitals around the country. they're going to be calling them search hob search centers, $100.00 beds each, and each of those to cope with any over overburdening of the system in other parts . and if things get worse still, i think there are about 4000 more beds that they can make available. but damage bo, carrying ra hanger, refugees near indonesia as being towed to shore. the boat of mostly women and children was left to drift off the coast of our province for days while attempting to reach malaysia. indonesia, as government decided to give them shells from whence they saying they were facing emergency conditions. hundreds of the muslim minority who fled me in mall. i've reached in denisia over the years after
