liability in the case that he has consistently denied the claims. michelle simpson, teagle jones, me now live from dallas, texas. she's a women's rights lawyer and founding partner at the simpson. teagle lot of good to have you with us. since and teagle the issues raised by sort of new evidence presented by prince andrew's lawyers will be debated and concluded in court. we have to leave it that for legal reasons. but what does this do? what this does do i suppose this raise the question about due diligence in the background to any case like this, the research that's needed to make sure the case is 100 percent strong, either for the defendant or the prosecution and the defense. yes, it does. and it's one of the reasons why the victims that i represent, i have to bet those cases, not just for the case or for myself, but for the survivors in the victim that i represent. because we want that case to hold up in court. i mean, does undermining evidence that sort of makes,
2:11 am
makes cases of sexual misconduct, shaky and corporate put victims off in terms of sort of coming forward. it certainly can, but one thing i always tell the victims i represent as not to let that fear or a predator silence stange, and that's certainly something i've seen. i represented a number of the women who were abused by olympic, dr. larry nasser and those women faced some of the same hurdles, but together they were able to join and they faced some of those obstacles, but they got past that in terms of the case and, and the, and the ladies that you represented in the u. s. gymnastics team, when did the penny drop the this was more than just one or 2 people accusing him and that it started with a dozen, then more than a dozen and then 50 that a 100 a because it was amazing case to actually look on watch from from,
2:12 am
you know, as far away as we are here, that this could actually happen in the united states. and i think what a lot of people don't remember realize is that women had reported larry nasser long before these cases became nationally known. and what, you know, what really dropped and i think changed sort of the face of this type of litigation is the meet him of man. and not we started seeing people come forward and saying it does not matter if you are friends or if you are the president of the united states, you should not be above the law. and you should base justice for the wrongs that you have done to people on a much wider scale. and i mean, how far has the low come in the united states to sort of address cases of sexual misconduct? i mean, does the burden of proof go beyond just a verbal accusation? i mean, what has to be presented for this to even reach a cold?
2:13 am
that's a great question. it really can just be the word of a survivor. if that survivor, if that victim's word is believed by the burden of proof that's required by law, whether it's proved beyond a reasonable doubt in a criminal case, or in the preponderance of the evidence. in a civil case, one witness and most american jurisdictions can be enough if a jury believes them. and i certainly have cases where that has been true. by that being said, we want to build and have other pieces and corroborating evidence. and i think the settlement agreement that we're seeing in that in case it is really to me a distraction. i think her attorneys likely knew about it. and it doesn't mean that prince. andrew should not still face justice because he was not jeffrey at steen. he has his own person. it is an interesting case. we'll see how the cold adjudicate so luck in the coming days for the moment. michelle simpson teagle, thanks so much for joining us from dallas and texas. thank you. well,
