6:02 pm
a police training camp. brody me, zalinski says warnings of our russian invasion are only provoking panic. it's our borders. it's our territory. you, you know, i have to speak with our people like our unit for, you know, like, like a president and said, people throughs and the truth that we have different information and know the best friend for enemies that hispanic, you know, gone through and all this information details only for bernie doesn't help us. meanwhile, on the streets of the ukrainian capital, kia war veterans were among hundreds on the march in a civilian show of strength. they are vowing to fight for their country if required . russia's foreign minister said oliver has accused the u. s of waging a propaganda campaign during a phone call a few hours ago with the u. s. secretary of state antony blinking. and we'll have
6:03 pm
more on that phone call, as well as the phone call between president putin and the french president emanuel my call when we speak to algiers. dorsey jabari in moscow. our white house correspondent kimberly hancock, is standing by with reaction from washington. at 1st we go to natasha butler, who's in the ukrainian capital key. ed natasha, the ukranian president, calling on people not to panic, but several countries already withdrawing their diplomatic staff and urging their citizens to leave ukraine. ah, it is not an easy position at all for the ukrainian prison voted me as lensky as you say. he is calling for calm. he's calling on people not to panic, and that's pretty much been his message over the past few days and weeks. he is saying the business of life must go on as usual. but at the same time, of course, what is happening in ukraine. the reality here in kiev is those several countries
6:04 pm
have decided to advise their citizens to get out of the country as soon as possible, and that they really need to stay here. and on top of that, you have the u. s. embassy pulling out all of it's a diplomatic stuff. so all of that's of course is making some people feel really rather anxious indeed. now, at the same time, you have moscow saying that it has no intention of invading ukraine, but the u. s. has a very different story, washington painting a different picture saying that could be an attack. an invasion, a by russian military force is on ukraine at any moment at any day. so that is the situation. it is extremely tense paper and here are still of course trying to get on with their daily lives. but as the days passed is certainly much more pessimistic picture right now that it was earlier in the week where we were talking about hope and optimism when diplomacy seemed to be working in some way to find some sort of solution. right now people are in a very unpredictable situation,
6:05 pm
right. i was going to ask you about that. about the sentiment among people you were at a veterans march earlier. what, what are people st yeah, hundreds of people march to a nikiya. they were walking through the city all very peaceful among them were many a veterans veterans of ukraine's, a war in the east of the country with the russian back separatist that and what the people had come out to say. and what they were telling us is that look, if russia was to invade ukraine, we already, we believe that our military is strong, we would fight to the ends. they say they are proud of the country. but at the same time, you know, many of them said look, we don't one more of course, we are hoping for peace. many of them really don't believe that they will be a war. they feel that perhaps some of what is going on the narrative on,
6:06 pm
on both sides western power, u. s. on one brush on the other, they are caught in the middle, may feel that narrative is something that they have heard before, of course, because they have lived up with what they call us. it's right to russian aggression for many years because that war, these has been going on for nearly 8 years. they just want to get on with their lives. but as i said, they say they are ready to fight if they have to natasha but not live in kia. thank you for that. natasha. next to our white house correspondent, kimberly hawk it in washington dc. a very important phone call coming up at this hour. kimberly the a u. s. f, as in joe biden, due to speak to rushes. lita, what can we expect? we've already got a sense of what might be discussed, given the efforts by the secretary of state and his counterpart survey lab rav back phone call, already taking place. and we've gotten a read out of that. what was communicated essentially, is that the diplomatic path remains open. to resolving this security dispute over
6:07 pm
ukraine, but that in the eyes of the united states, it is russia that needs to deescalate and engage immediately in good faith discussions. if an alternative path is pursued by russia, then there will be a resolute, massive united trans atlantic response that is, according to the state department. now we know that there's been another phone call and that has been with the defense secretary, lloyd austin and his russian counterpart. but of course, again, it is the phone call that is set to take place imminently between the u. s. president and the russian president that now all eyes are on many hoping that this is something that can avert a potential military crisis. and we should very quickly point out that it was at the request of the russian side for this to happen on monday. the counter invitation issued by the united states was this call to happen today? the big question, what might happen on sunday, given the fact that the united states believes due to military intelligence does
6:08 pm
not been provided that we are now at a window where russia may invade ukraine. kimberley hancock live in washington. let's get the view now from moscow and door. so jabari door, so a lot of diplomatic contacts happening again to day. president. putin do to speak to present biden as we just heard the this hour. but he's already spoken to the french president emmanuel. michael, how is russia viewing all these different conversations? well, i think it's important to highlights that term. we have not heard from the kremlin about the details of these phone conversations that have been taking place on saturday and which is not usual practice. usually the kremlin does provide and much more information as these phone conversations take place between various high ranking officials. the only one that was shared much more in detail was the phone conversation that took place between the russian foreign minister, sir. good love rob and his american counterpart anthony blinking earlier on
6:09 pm
saturday, where the foreign minister highlighted the fact that everything that is happening is because the west is refusing to address moscow's key security concerns. and they're creating that at this atmosphere of hysteria to actually distract from the main issue. they don't want to answer about russia security concerns. and we also understand the russian defense minister survey shows who has been speaking to his american counterpart in a very rare phone conversation. all we know at this stage is that they discuss issues of mutual concern, and the kremlin is not being forthcoming about the details of that conversation. and the, the french president emanuel micron has been speaking to president vladimir putin. the 2 men spoke for nearly an hour and 40 minutes, and according to the french side, the french president micron said that to the idea that diplomacy can continue is not comparable to deescalate intentions and that they are not on the same track
6:10 pm
. apparently, the french president said that sincere dialogue is incompatible with escalation. of course, the 2 men met on monday in moscow where they had a 6 hour meeting and it was clear that vladimir putin was not satisfied after that meeting at the french president later on, moved to kiev, where he met with officials there. and he each set, that's the issue of nato's expansion was not brought up, but he didn't allow vladimir putin to expand further. he said that they talked about all the other secondary issues. and it's clear now that there is a, there was certainly an escalation in attentions after those meetings because the russians maintain that there a main concern is being ignored. meanwhile, they say that they're still very much not interested in dating ukraine, and they want to continue this path of diplomacy. but the rhetoric that is coming out of washington is not conducive to that whether or not this upcoming phone call with us president joe biden will be able to calm things further. we'll have to wait
6:11 pm
and see. indeed, we will wait and see, and we'll come back to you as soon as they're new developments on this story and more information on that phone call between present routine and present biden dorsey jabari in moscow. thank you. meanwhile, russia is continuing its military drills with bella. russian forces near the border with ukraine al jazeera is set by thin, is that the better was ukraine border? she says the exercises are raising more concerns about moscow's intentions. there's a lot of anxiety about these exercises that officially started the, the main face a couple of days ago, officially a bellows and russia are training for an attack by an aide today. these are war games. but as a lot of speculation, if this through build up was basically meant for something else, maybe a 2nd front for russia, basically in bellows, they can easily go to the ukranian capital key, f, which is the closest the nearest from here. they're not only exercise is happening at this air field, but there are training grounds around his whole area. this whole stretch in the

minister justin trudeau gave a warning to the occupiers who have been severely disrupting everyday life in the canadian capital ottawa for 2 weeks. it is time for these protesters to go home. it is time to recognize that this protest is blockade his illegal. everything is on the table because this unlawful activity has to end trudeau spoke with you as president joe biden, about the demonstrations and their conservative american supporters. we discussed the american and indeed global influences on the protest. we talked about the u. s . based flooding of the 9 on one phone lines, in ottawa, the presence of u. s. citizens in the blockades and the impact of foreign money to fund this illegal activity. the occupiers who call themselves the freedom convoy, have been lavishly praised and encouraged by personalities. on the right,

leaning fox news channel, police officers moved among the trucks and other vehicles snarling city streets, collecting license, plate information, demonstrators heckled and jeered at them. oh, the protests started among truck drivers, angered by a requirement they be vaccinated against coven 19 when crossing back and forth over the u. s. border. but it has metastasized into a general anti government movement. how to and the convoy? yeah, you got and the mandate got and the mandates and personally all want sharon, whoever's point groceries, pull dawn out of town. i don't care what happens to them, but they got to be banished. us authorities are on guard against similar protests in los angeles aimed at disrupting this weekend super bowl. the department of homeland security is searching additional staff to its incident command, post their strong cooperation with the california highway patrol,
6:21 pm
the los angeles police department, the anti vaccine protesters are certainly a minority in canada. 88 percent of its citizens have received at least one dose of the vaccine, rob reynolds al jazeera, or let's speak to judy train about all this. she's an investigative reporter at cdc news, and he's joining us from ottawa. judy, thank you so much for being with us. the protesters seem unfazed by, by the state of emergency. tell us 1st about who's been protesting, how much support they had and what's driving this really folly. i will tell you that these protesters are emboldened 1st of all they begin as a truckers convoy, as you heard in a previous report was driven by truckers, me from the west in the provinces of alberta. the what is interesting is that it has now spread, and the core of its organization has quite a bit of far rates and weights of premise inclinations. and now
6:22 pm
that they are fully entrenched in the capitol, they are actually drawing support from other individuals who are just frustrated with the pandemic restrictions with all these continuous launch downs that have affected businesses. so it's no longer the truckers, it began with the truckers, but now it is more widespread, but they are still in the minority because the majority of citizens in this city as well as in canada, do not support what they are doing. because some of the rhetoric they're using, they wanted to end vaccine mandates. they wanted to end the restriction for truckers in order to work in canada, they had to get bassett aid. and that was also a restriction in the us. that's what it began with. but now there is talk over throwing the government here, the parliamentary it is, it is anti government, and it is also highly, i would say,
6:23 pm
motivated by forces who want to dis, dest, destabilize this democracy. and so what impact is it having politically on prime minister, just in judo, he has then though prime ministers began his rhetoric coming out strong, he could condemn the action. he called them. he called them far right. he called them massage and s t. he basically labeled them, he took their hard line but the same time and it's it further isolated them and it motivated them to entrench further. i would tell you that this all began with a tactical mistake, auto police, which is the local police force here, allowed trucks thousands of heavy transport trucks waiting between 5 and 10 tons to drive into the capitol. what they did was not only did they drive up to the
6:24 pm
gates apartment hill, they then disabled their trucks. some we had vehicles that had their view, their tires removed, and they refused to move them. and once you have those trucks been in the city core, it's very hard to remove, right? it's easy folly to remove protesters very difficult to remove thousands of trucks right now. most of the trucks are gone. but when in the red zone that is closest to part of the hill, there are still about 400 heavy transport trucks. what impact has that had? i mean, we've seen the disruptions cause in the u. s. or the automotive industry because of that bridge being blocked, what impact has it had in canada? in the capital? what's going on is that businesses have been so frightened by the amount of harassment that they've and residents have received, that they've actually shut down their businesses. these are the city of ottawa has
6:25 pm
a masking policy you before you can enter an establishment, you have to be wearing a mass. there are many, many activities that require you to show proof of vaccination with the entry of the oh siders, what has happened is that they are floating all the local buy loss and that is causing concern. what impact it has economically is bad. for example, just our largest mall, our largest shopping center here in ottawa has not been open for 15 days. we are now going on the 16 of a protest of a occupation and somebody even use the word siege that has locked down this entire lock down. the city's core, thank you so much, judy, for talking to us about this and giving us a picture there in canada. judy train is an investigative reporter at cbc news. joining us a line from ottawa. we appreciate your time. thank you. my such a u. s. president joe biden has signed an executive order to distribute

checkpoints, thousands of these have been much more now on our top story and the tensions between russia and ukraine and the west. let's speak to alexander vote, traverse about this, his editor in chief of the swiss military review and his joining us from geneva, thank you so much for being with us. so the kremlin says it wants to avoid conflict . but is there a risk right now of an actual conflict because of all the stretch rank from all sides? there is definitely a risk of risk of conflict because at any given moment when you have such a high concentration of troops of, of technical means of radars of computers. everybody is trying to sort out what the other is doing. and so mistakes accidents may happen that makes for a risky situation where there's a whirlwind of diplomacy right now. we know lots of phone conversations happening,
6:33 pm
but it doesn't seem to be working. why do you think that it is time running out for diplomacy to work out? well, it depends what the objectives really are and for the united states on one side and for russia on the other. the diplomacy seems to be working pretty well because we are, if you want to go back to the situation of the cold war, where there are really 2 superpowers who have something to say about the world affairs. and everybody else is irrelevant from china to the european union to everybody else, including the actors who are on the ground in the middle of these 2 superpowers. so i would, i would argue, on the contrary, that the diplomatic attempts and strategies are working for those superpowers. alexander one wander is what sorta information the americans have. what basis are they making to, to say that an invasion is emitted for from a military expertise. what do you think is happening here?
6:34 pm
definitely there are satellite pictures. there's all sorts of reconnaissance data that shows that in defects. there are not one but 2 russian military forces build up. one in bell arrest, which is are highly contested and, and strategic area. and the other one which is close to us. so the eastern border of ukraine, where previously, russian forces have been concentrated and have, has direct and indirect effects on, on ukraine. so yes, there are 2 hot spots and the conjunction of these 2 hot spots and the planning that is going on in the new various been bounced and the now mobilization of certain russian forces in certain russian technologies and hyper sunday commit files. for example. all of these are clues allow the united states,
6:35 pm
diplomats to say that there is a risk and there are plans within the russian are forces that is correct, right. and the russians have 130000 troops right now near the border with ukraine, a 30 warships. well, what is, you know, the end game here ultimately for russia? is this about really preventing ukraine from moving closer to the west? why is ukraine so important to rush out that they would invaded? now you've asked many questions. let me answer the 1st those on 30000 troops that you have been talking about, well, they've been there. they have been situated close to the ukrainian border for more than a year now. so this has not really led to 2 major changes. however, those forces have been mobilized. they are training, they are preparing for maneuvers or war. it's very difficult to spot the difference on, on the, on either side and, and therefore, the state of preparedness,
6:36 pm
russian forces is now almost as high as the nato high, really high readiness reaction force that, that has been planted in various areas around the ukraine. so let's say that the russian military buildup is echoing the west military build up in the air. very good to talk to you and get you insight about this. thank you so much for talking to us on exam that much of as a security and defense on this training aside from geneva, thank you for your time. thank you. i is rarely military drills in the occupied west bank of forcing some palestinian families from their homes many times a year as need a brain reports the temporary re, housing and constant disruptions to their lies is causing many families to move up permanently in yearly hours of the morning, these palestinian families are being forced to leave their homes and belongings.

these were the military sometimes uses this area in the north of the occupied west bank as a training ground. this means that people who have lived here for a decade have to stay away for as long as the army decides is necessary. israeli military jeeps move between homes to ensure every one has left palestinians here. say it's not their 1st order to leave their home. this year and fear it won't be the last or the one to print it out. they'll stay here until each one of us leave their home. they'll say, why aren't you out yet? it's a day and you have to leave explosions like these often break the piece here . you know, you must, i fear for the children. they get scared of the bombing. i tried to calm them down, but we're scared to i remind them not to touch anything. the army leaves behind because it might explode with the bad people here say they have nowhere else to go . so they have to stay out until they're allowed to return to their homes. after
