a 100000 people remain trapped there while some other cities around the country are being evacuated. al jazeera zane bas rabbit begins are coverage with the story of people force abandoning helms dozens, thousands, millions behind the numbers used to describe what is happening. are the people living the school, those fighting it? those fleeing it? this is the picture of displacement in ukraine's. the russian invasion has devastated city after city. this family left of the fca in the dynette screeching after seeing their neighbors killed all of them to go moist them don't let us do us both. i want to go back home. she says,

we left everything. there's a law we're glad to because my advice to those who are steal because the new got leave while they haven't flattened everything. there was nothing. no gas is. if you know lights, you know water, but she had no food because all the shops have been ruined already. it's impossible to live there. though these central train station is the last major hub for refugees from the war escaping to europe. ah air raid sirens here, pale in comparison, perhaps to the violence they've left behind. ah, victor and rosa from a village near car keys under russian occupation. after hiding in their basement for 2 weeks, they found someone to smuggle them out. just before the russians closed,

station are pulling families apart. upgrade them just closed the skies. she says that is all some stop and levine before continuing on a chance to rest, to recharge a brief moment of calm before the chaos of getting to the border. and getting out of you, chris and zane joins us now live from the western ukrainian city of live zane, a very powerful report that give us an update 1st on the humanitarian, coy doors. mary, upon the besieged city, which is the worse affected still not on the list of humanitarian called us. that's exactly right. when the humanitarian corridors work,
6:06 pm
they are very good. thousands of people have been able to get to safer areas of ukraine using those corridors that have been negotiated between russia and ukraine, which is a very good thing. but crucially, in the last few days, we've been expecting mario pull to be on the list of places that are being evacuated is the worst affected city by this conflict. and for 2 days in a row that has not happened once again, mario pole is not on the list. what we've been hearing is from president zelinski who gives a national address regularly in one of his latest ones. he said the, what's happening in that city is a total blockade of that city in human conditions, ongoing in a situation where there is constant bombardment, there is no access to water, food, and medicine for many people. and he says that russians are blocking any aid trying to get in. in fact, he also commented on 15 aid workers, bus drivers who were seized when they tried to date it take aid into that sydney. so this situation where continues to be very difficult authorities in mario pl merkel, city officials are still trying to communicate to their residents
6:07 pm
a 100000 that are trying to get out. and they have said that if people can get to brilliance, then from there, there are buses headed from parisha to birdie asked to pick people up. so that might be a lifeline for those who can make it. and what's the latest zane on talks between and the 2 sides a few days ago, there were some hope at some progress had been made. but we still haven't heard much in the last few hours about that. the progress of talks really the talks truth be told are stalled. they are difficult. what we've heard them described as, as confrontational, ukraine is described. russia's position is maximus demanding continued compromises capitulation that ukraine is simply not ready to make. russia for its part is accused praying of delaying the talks and not taking part in anything substantive and constantly demanding a face to face meeting between the leaders of the 2 countries which rush, i said won't happen until there is some sort of tangible,
6:08 pm
tangible agreement to sign on to so the talk simply aren't really moving as difficult as fast as people would like. and it's hard to see how they can with the continued mentality that is happening here. but i suppose one thing that is, is a good thing is that, that talks are simply still happening. as long as that is the case, there is hope that something can get better. then thank you very much for that zane miss riley live in live and a mayor of key says a ukrainian counter offensive is under way north west of the capitol vitale. cash flow says ukrainian forces have managed to retake microwave and her pain, but also gave an update on casualties in the city. russian skilled, 264 videos willis and bombing attack right now is, can be more from 264 civilians. was 4 children right now all over 300

people in hospitals. they is injured. and 16 children also injured right now in the hospitals. now the russians have for the past 10 days, been bombarding several areas surrounding cave, including areas to the northwest of a capital city. those are a pin which is only about 25 kilometers away from the city center of keys. right next to it is the city of boucher and hoster. now slightly further north has also been under attack. ukraine says it's been fighting off russian forces on the ground and is still in control of all 3 cities. let's bring in iran con, now, who is in the capital key for is iran the curfew in keith has been lifted for some are few hours now. bring us up to speed with the situation there. well a 30 this morning. there was yet another alteri shelling against
6:10 pm
a residential building in the north of kiva. about 6 was m kilometers away from our pain and boucher are those front lines that you were just talking about. i can building the complete front of that facade of that building was completely blown away. there are full casualties as are full people injured, but no casualties in that particular attack. and once again, it's just another example of what the russians are trying to do. but to bring you up to date with what's happening, mike heave and a pin are said to have been re taken by ukrainian forces. that's a very big deal because at a pin in particular, if that had fallen to russian forces, it would have given them a staging ground for an invasion into cave itself. boucher and austin all the other 2 areas that we've just mentioned before. those areas are now completely surrounded by ukrainian forces and the russians trapped inside. now,
6:11 pm
according to intelligence assessments, we've been reading that publicly available ah, globally, the attack or the russian advance has actually been stalled. so the russians are now changing tactics. they know that they can't move in to keep itself not without a massive amounts of soldiers. and we've seen the, the way armies operate when they to retake areas. you need thousands of troops to be able to take a square kilometer block of a city. and then is a very slow advance and they don't have those numbers of troops. so what they're doing now is using the air strikes and now becoming much more common in the last few days, we've seen cruise missiles being shut down by ukrainian air defense systems. we've seen rockets or missiles be intercepted. we've seen those missiles, russian missiles land as well in residential areas in shopping malls, the russian se, actually that shopping mall that was out there was bombed yesterday. was actually a armster po, a, a dump for rockets or the ukrainians have denied that russians are insisting that
6:12 pm
that's the kind of warfare that we're seeing now. we're seeing it come from the air more air raid sirens throughout the day in just now. before we came on it, there was the dull flood of artillery shells going off in the background were only about 15 kilometers away from where those front lines are. now. if the russians are completely encircled, that means that the russian air force the russian, russian air strikes or whether that's from land or by the air itself, or now the fight. and let's see if that develops over next couple of days. all likelihood suggests that it will thank you for that iran can live for i seen cage. the port city of odessa has largely been spared from fighting, but it's on high alert for a russian attack. stephanie dec every fortune there life here now is all about preparing the city for a potential russian attack every day. a destiny come here,
6:13 pm
come together to fill up sandbags on the beaches and then phillip trucks to $4.00 to $5.00 areas of the city while we've been here. there's been shutting. we've seen aries across the waters on fire. there is smoke. we're not exactly sure what exactly is going on there. we're not allowed to fill in anything super sensitive here when it comes to the military operations and installations, but certainly on tuesday, for the 1st time residential areas inside a desa. we're hit. people here are telling us that they are feeling what they say is the heat rising that potentially a russian attack could be sued. which is why people here believe that there cannot be enough sand bags filled to fortify. this city. you have men, you have women all coming together here, day off today, and this is what you see. this production line sandbags being filmed, being put in trucks and then being carried around to other parts of the city. odessa is a key port. it is ukraine's biggest c port. it is seen to be one of russia's main targets or everyone here are saying they do believe something will happen. we've
6:14 pm
seen, as i said earlier in increase already in shelling in the area in the last couple of days. but certainly resolve here remain strong. everyone we've spoken to to will tell you that russia will not take a deaf. so let's take a look at the situation on the ground in ukraine on day $28.00 of the war areas in rage are held by russian forces and their separatist allies, ukrainian forces in besieged. mary paul is still holding out if been further civilian evacuations from neighboring towns and ukraine says it's successfully push bank russian advances with counter offensive to near keith and mc alive. ukrainian forces are also fending off a task by russian troops in the 2nd largest city car keith. most people have fled after residential areas where shout, i st. beg is in khaki. with more silence. there was once a community here, but just us everything. silence is broken by the sound of artillery.

this house was just, it was so just want to regular. those who remain have become accustomed to it. this is milda, deborah, bob wallace. 10 minutes ago there were fire in like crazy thought they were really pounding the area up the road. oh, this is a residential area. well you're, it happens a lot while we are every half hour the reload was almost serious received when they britain and across the street. we meet 69 year old lead of or been a cover, but don't room in the courtroom. yoga dorothy, she said she doesn't want to leave a house because a husband can't walk and they don't want to be a burden on others. a neighbourhood is under constant attack or change though long had yet another. it's scary, they had here and there half the street is destroyed. ukraine save us where we're here. we're told it's unsafe. we must leave the area because of the ongoing artillery. jill can hear that going from the incoming and can also hidden landing

aggression, to inspire ukrainians, to take care of themselves, find ways to oppose the rush and aggression through their own liens. but the messaging that he has provided is also enhancing his stature international. and you've seen as a good leader, i'm some people are the last, are making comparisons with, with the church. and what were to ronald reagan was also a good communicator. soleski has used his skills to great advantage at this crucial moment in their credit history. we've seen him speaking to lawmakers in france to the us congress, to canada, to lawmakers in israel as well. does the messaging change depending on who is speaking to and has it been effective? these addresses to, to these various parliaments. the one concert, same has been to thank western country is for their support and to encourage them
6:21 pm
or even shame them to do even more. so the messages to parliament, including the us congress, those have not just been sweetness and alike. they have really called on those parliament to approve more money for military and humanitarian aid for their credit . but he is called for a no fly zone to these various parliaments. still haven't been heated that that's correct. in the west, people believed that the no fly zone has not the most militarily effective solution . and it could increase the risk of nato shooting down russian combat fighters. instead of adding ground launched anti air missile systems is seen as a way really to accomplish the same purpose. right. what, what can russia do against this powerful piano machine that the ukrainian leader has put out there? i mean, has put in lost control of the narrative if he has lost control of the narrative.
6:22 pm
the 1st western audiences are concerned and, and probably many other international audiences he has seemed in his messages to be resentful to be dismissive, to be isolated. you know, he, instead of surrounding himself with colleagues, coastline, he's been sitting at long distance from them. at tables has been in his messaging, are using stream of cautious of speaking, not, not carefully structured speaking, suggesting that his messages not very clear. but do you think, are you say his last sent the messaging when it comes to international audience is but within russia? has it changed anything with enroll she? with so many reports of the people who have access to the internet opposing the war . but older people who watch my lou television, which is all officially controlled or be more supportive of the world so cruel,

is having some of her to inferred russia because we're media vacuum. thank you so much for talking to us william courtney from the rand corporation and former us ambassador to catholic fan and georgia. we appreciate your insight. thank you very much. you're welcome. ah, let's turn our attention to other worlds. news now and 6 people are day after gunman stormed a military base in somalia, capital mogadishu, the camp is inside, the highly fortified international airport security forces said they killed 3 gun men trying to get inside the armed globe. al bob has claimed responsibility live to malcolm web in mogadishu. for is malcolm tell us more about what happened in this incident. this happened in an area that's highly fortified.

the gun men attack holiday come, which is a green zone here in mogadishu to build around the air for it's not far from where we are now just along the indian ocean coastline. and inside, heavily for divide area is the united nations, the african union peacekeepers. the soldiers in the african union force, all of the embassies of the western countries that support this government and the african union peacekeepers. private military companies, as well as heavily fortified, surrounded by 6 walls of concrete, designed to stop attack as an explosions. now we understand that the 2 will, 3 gunmen got in and engaged in a fire fight. with somali police officers went on for about 2 hours before the attackers were killed in the fighting stop said the andre pasha. bob, same responsibility as you said, it will say, said he had 5 mortars somewhere from somewhere within the city eye witnesses
6:25 pm
corroborated this from somewhere within that issue into that fortified area are about 6 mortars landed there at around the same time. now the police spokesperson said that 6 people being killed, 5 of them were foreigners. one of them was somali, and one of those foreigners was a soldier from the african union force. now the african union force has been here for 15 years with mixed success. they control that green zone. they control many of the key towns and cities, but the arm grew, bosher. bob still dominates in sways to the country side and frequently makes incursions into the towns and cities. but this only the 2nd time that i'll show bob's attack and have actually managed to get into hallowani camp the green zone. but next week, the 15 year presence of the african union peacekeepers is meant to end their mandates is meant to end. and it's meant to move on to a new he's keeping for the african union,

transitional mission in somalia. ostensibly this is meant to hand over more control to the somali forces. somali forces were being trained in the very area that was attacked earlier today. so these transitions meant to happen in just a week from now, but she about certainly seems like their intention was to try to make the somali forces who they were attacking look weak. thank you for that malcolm way. black for us in somalia, capital mogadishu girls expecting to return to school in afghanistan on wednesday, have been left disappointed. many showed up for school for the 1st time in 7 months, only to be told to go home. the ministry of education says more secondary schools will, girls will stay closed until further notice interrogate and be has a detail. oh, the day started so well for these girls in cobble as they returned to school for the 1st time in 7 months. i shook, i'll humbler. thank god. the taliban are also like the previous government. now i

don't have any concern about what i have to wear or whether to go to school or not . my family has allowed me and thank god. now the taliban has also given us permission to go to school. we are very happy. oh, but a few hours later that sense of optimism had completely disappeared. the taliban la government suddenly ordered most secondary schools for girls to close. students packed up their bags and headed home. it was all with the man who i was happy and excited when i found out i was going to school i. but we are hardly there for 30 minutes when they kicked us out and shut the door and left us hopeless. after that, then they got by the federal government. it isn't fair that boys are allowed to go to schools and girls, aunt, what have girls done wrong? we want our schools to reopen, like before. girls in afghanistan have been waiting for months to attend school. the taliban pledge to provide them with access to an education after it's takeover in august. but since then most girls have been banned from going to school after

underground. now, meanwhile, at the united nations, the general assemblies resuming an emergency special session on the war, ukraine's ambassador is urging countries to vote for a humanitarian draft resolution that holds russia responsible for the conflicts people are being killed in there at them, to flee from conflict affected areas, cities are raised to the ground by selling and as strikes. neighboring countries are stretched to their limits of accommodating millions of ukrainian refugees. we ask all those who stand against the wall to wall with us today for the draft entitled humanitarian consequences of the aggression against ukraine. lived to kristen salumi at the united nations for is kristin. it's 3 separate resolutions on ukraine being discussed at the un today. how are they different
6:34 pm
yeah, it's incredible. 3 separate resolutions. i have them right here to in the general assembly one in the security council. all of them having to do with humanitarian relief in the, in, in ukraine, calling for humanitarian access protection of civilians, protection of aid workers, and so on. all of that they have in common. the differences, however, are crucial, and the ukrainians are on board. with the resolution that was drafted by france and mexico and has the support of nato align countries that not only cause for humanitarian access, but clearly points a finger at russia as the source of the humanitarian crisis in ukraine. russia says that this is politically motivated, it's a disingenuous attempt at a humanitarian resolution. and so they've submitted their own resolution in the security council to counter that. doesn't blame them,
6:35 pm
but does call for humanitarian access. and then there's a 3rd attempt at a resolution put forward by south africa in the general assembly. they say they're trying to walk in between these super powers that are on either side of this conflict and find some common ground with their resolution. they haven't presented it formally in the general assembly so far this morning, but it has been submitted and were told that they continue to negotiate behind the scenes again with the drafters of that western backed resolution and the goal to find as much common ground as possible with resolutions, but at this stage we don't know if the south african draft will also be put to a vote as well. and kristen, what can we expect from the, the city council session mason? so russia is calling for a vote on their draft resolution in the security council at in
6:36 pm
a few hours time. that's likely to happen before the general assembly votes on its resolutions because some 60 speakers have signed up to talk there. so it's going to take a while to get through them into finally get to a vote that could happen late on wednesday or early thursday. meantime, the security council vote will happen soon, but we don't expect that one to pass. certainly, the united states, the united kingdom, who hold veto power in the security council have said they can't support anything that doesn't directly acknowledge russia as the source of the problem. so the question then becomes, is what happens in the general assembly and how unified will the world community be the $141.00 countries voted and support on march, 2nd of a resolution that did call for an end to the violence and point a finger at russia will they get the same or more votes this time around is what will be interesting to watch,

some of the things that have already been decided for new battle groups for nato in eastern europe. and they're also going to be talking about weapons of mass destruction with russia, saying that it has the possibility that it might use nuclear weapons of it faces an existential threat. and the possibility that nato feels is a threat that russia could use chemical or biological weapons to morrow. i expect allies will agree to provide additional support including cybersecurity assistance, as well as equipment to help ukraine protect against chemical biological on radio, logical, and new sets. while i pressed the settlers general in that news conference, what does yet she mean by that?
6:39 pm
