just because it's life doesn't mean it cannot be price. what about the guy that can't afford it? that guy told me it's water. al jazeera examines the social, financial, and environmental impact of a lot of privatization notes of water on al jazeera. ah, this is al jazeera ah hello, i'm fully battle with al jazeera is extensive coverage, one month into the war in ukraine, taking a stand against russia invasion of ukraine. the u. s. president says nato has never been more united. russia says it welcomes the efforts of the red crossing, facilitating humanitarian corridors in ukraine, but doesn't believe ukraine will meet its obligations. unfortunately,
9:01 pm
we have no particular reason to rely on the faithful fulfillment by the ukrainian authorities on their obligations under international humanitarian law. the city at the center of so much destruction, another blasting ukraine, 2nd city khaki. it kills at least 6 people. these people have never held a weapon before. they are civilians. they're not going to be joining the fight. but they want to know how to, if it come to the, i'm definitely decker in the vital port city of odessa. we'll have that story coming up. and on he, december to the of sports 2 more teams qualify for the fee for world cub japan's, when over australia sees them through to the final for $7.00 straight time, and also the same saudi arabia to casa 2022. it is one month since the start of the war in ukraine, and there is the increasing anxiety over what will happen next. during another busy
9:02 pm
day of diplomacy in brussels has been a warning to russia not to use chemical biological or nuclear weapons. and moments ago or us president told russia, nato has never been more united against his actions. let's bring in our diplomatic editor james phase, who's in brussels for us. it's been quite a day of diplomacy in brussels. 3 different meetings. let's talk about president biden's message for us. we heard from him just a moment ago and very keen to show unity among nato lead us the us present. yes, i mean, i would say that is definitely the main takings that president biden says of the achievements in this 1st month and match them against what president zalinski said when he addressed nato leaders by video link earlier on. because yes, president biden with the 3 points he made is right. they have $4.00 to $5.00, the east and flank of nato. there are more troops than of there. there have been
9:03 pm
for a very, very long time, a 100000 u. s. troops. now, in europe, a tenfold increase of troops under nato command, and there are 8 battle groups on that eastern flank. but the other 2 points imposing the most significant sanctions, while they are certainly very, very tough sanctions, but they don't go as far as the ukrainians would like. they don't include the energy sector or key e u players. and in the g 7, particularly germany are opposed right now and doing that because they say it would cripple their economy. it will cripple and hurt and cause a recession in e u countries. and it would hurt them even more than it would hurt the russians. and the final point he made in his 3 achievements that he listed at was the support that had given to ukraine in humanitarian and military assistance. while they've given it a great deal of support, more than perhaps many would have suspected a month ago, but again, they haven't reached the level of what president zalinski wants. he said again,
9:04 pm
today he's been searching for a month for clear answers on rocket launcher systems on jets on tanks. and those i have not been forthcoming. those answers all of the key armor and jets that he wants on the ground to turn the tide of this war. president biden though, making it clear that the key thing is that these 3 groups, the g 7 and nato and the you are, he's heading right now are all united with ukraine. prune was banking on need. obey split my early conversation with him in december and early january was clear to me. he didn't think we could sustain this cohesion. nato has never, never been more united than it is to day prudent is getting exactly the opposite. what he intended to have as a consequence of going into ukraine, we've built that same unity with our european and the european union, and with
9:05 pm
a leading democracies of the g 7. 0, well, these meetings all seriously delayed president biden, in fact, rejecting his schedule, putting that news conference in as a different time, because this is all quite a few hours behind schedule. i think that shows you will, that you have that message of unity from all these leaders behind the scenes, really in set intense discussions or possibly some new ideas. i don't know, but that's the sort of thing. when leaders get together new ideas, gate get shaken down, and i'm sure that may well be other things that aren't in the official communicate from nato or the g 7 that have been seriously discussed here. a may still be in the pipeline and we'll see more potentially cuz it doesn't end here. they're on their way to where kimberly is at the european union present. biden's medicaid probably by now very nearly that. right. thank you, james. we are going to talk to,
9:06 pm
kimberly now is also in brussels and a covering at present biden's movement for a sam quite a few things were talked about during that news conference, sat kimberly who talked about ukraine of course and, and other issues. what were the main take away from the front, from the president as far as your content? well, the main headline coming up in the precedence press conference is that he plans to visit a refugee camp on the inside the polish border just over the border from ukraine. this was not on the president's schedule, although there had been quite a bit of speculation and it comes on the heels. this confirmation by the president of an announcement that the united states is giving an additional 1000000000 a new funding in what it calls humanitarian assistance for food, shelter, medication for these type of release programs. and so this is something that had
9:07 pm
not been on the president's calendar, but he is headed to a meeting in poland on saturday with that country's leader, president duda. and now we know that the president least has the intentions of. 1 visiting those who are fleeing the conflict in ukraine now very quickly, some of the other top headlines, the weapons inside ukraine, the united states has alleged that this is one of its major concerns, but offered no intelligence. reporters have been pressing for the intelligence. this was asked again, the president did not supply that in any way. and the reason this is sensitive is of course, 20 years ago. prior to the u. s. invasion of iraq. americans were told that there was intelligence, there was the saddam hussein was going to use weapons of mass destruction only to find out that that was faulty intelligence. so this is why it's being questioned. and again, oh, the president would say is that if that is used in ukraine, the united states and allies will respond to in kind
9:08 pm
a very quickly what are the other major concerns about russia and this sort of ongoing conflict and its ability to finance this conflict is that countries like china are giving it life support even as they are punishing financial sanctions in place to sort of disable latimer putin's ability to him that he had or the international committee of the red cross says it's difficult to get a to people caught up in the fighting in ukraine. peter morrow, a speaking or a news conference with brushes, foreign minister say get off in moscow. mario paul is an it is a city which has high visibility and attention from the international community. but i also want to highlight that it is not the only place of concern, and i see or see is trying to make efforts to see the whole frontline and challenges and to have access cindy evacuation modalities agreed upon by the parties. we have always highlighted. it's not possible to think about access or at
9:09 pm
the very core of accusation, either in mario paul or another place. if we don't have solid agreement and detailed agreement between the militaries on the ground, you may previous the legal bonus because we welcome the willingness of the red cross to use available resources to help people in need in ukraine, the genetic in the hands, peoples, republics, and we also know that the red cross traditionally strive to serve as an impartial and independent intermediary within its mandate. unfortunately, we have no particular reason to rely on the faithful fulfillment by the ukrainian authorities of their obligations under international humanitarian law. now our fairs, bernard smith, have moore from moscow where the head of the red cross met with russia, foreign minister, or be tomorrow's just spent 5 days in ukraine. so it comes to moscow after that trip because one of the main jobs of the i c. c, to make sure in times of conflict that the rules of the geneva convention are
9:10 pm
observed, which means you main treatment of prisoners of war. it means humane treatment of non competence as well. civilians caught up in the conflict and for example, the ability to return the bodies of those killed in combat to their home countries . now be tamara says he's not actually been given the yet to see any prisoners of war being held by either side in this conflict by the ukrainians or the russians. but he says he hopes they'll get. they'll get access soon and they'll be able to start large scale visits soon as well. now beat them are also says he's asked the russians for permission to build a large distribution or logistic center and roster off on don't mess a big russian city near the border with ukraine. he wants to do that to be able to deliver aid into crane. no response from the russian, specifically on that question. although i love rob did say that he was interested
9:11 pm
in lifting artificial barriers to resolving humanitarian issues. and alger there is iran. con has been speaking to ukraine, deputy prime minister, to talk about the latest developments in the war. and he began by asking irina very shoak if the humanitarian corridors are working, lucia vasqua will proceed. they are working with great difficulty. they are being constantly shelled fresh ice constantly breaking the deal. the corridors that we are opening in reality are being shallow and people don't feel safe, especially when it comes to morning. with all over the world scale, humanitarian catastrophe has been ongoing for more than 3 nato is meeting today. do you feel that nato has let ukraine down? know last name? why we don't have a right to be disappointed. we don't have a right stop over fight, and we don't have the right for emotions that aren't helpful for our survival in victory over russia. we obviously understand that the forces have not been equal
9:12 pm
from the start. when we talk about russia heading in the amount of robins cuties with russia doesn't have and what ukraine has is the fact that we are on our own land. our old people are fighting brothers children or adult not for nathan decides or doesn't decide will be judged, but history not only were ukrainians, but the way the whole civilized world through the question that is at stake today is it's evil when it gets dark, wins over a watch or perhaps we learn how to live as a human, to remain human, no matter what. would you come over, but what is the current status of the russia ukrainian talks? russia seems to be talking about the big picture stuff. demilitarization potential withdraw later membership. but ukraine is sticking to its guns and saying it's a ceasefire, and it's withdrawn from territories. is there any common ground you receive what you love and they did, you should your to nibble or see it was nice fresh. i wanted to find a solution. we would not have war. russia understands well that we don't have any
9:13 pm
nazis because over legislation, strictly condoms massive russia on the sun. well that it demands what will never happen. the count concedes over 3030 for what? for if things for like this, russia, i will repeat again with never a talk. russia doesn't fun to any talks and is pretending that it is participating in the wrong table for the moment. it makes it possible that the talks don't succeed in russia is killing civilians. and creating humanitarian catastrophe in ukraine is the goal, so that you never find an agreement. thanks for the opposite. we would have already found an agreement long time ago received his wish with the more than mister. and now this, your opinions seem to be taking the lead when it comes to ukraine, but for you is this much more of a global fight. so yeah, which is what this does not. or you can shoot, i want to address the nations we're listening to as known. fortune rhythm reduce my
9:14 pm
question. sure. but we are fighting for the world we want to leave in the world for those who think that the rules just want to be able to do such things. neither to us, north korean will pick 3 my degrees. my ask is to support the ukraine of support the cranium. people support us in fighting. believe me every one to gain from it, including your leaders in the nation. this will become a guarantee for the safety of all of us. you hold on to my focus of fighting has been the battle for ukraine, 2nd city, and there's been more shilling in khaki in the past few hours, russian or delivery landing in front of a past postal center where people were thought to be queuing for humanitarian aid. as big as the latest shutting has been going on just behind us for about 2 hours or so. the phone coming from that side and landing the smoke is rising up. i still going on? no, we can go any further because it's not safe. and from what we are being told is
9:15 pm
that people can go for matching. 8 shell landed close by and our sources tell us full people have died and many injured. again, we don't know what the russians are aiming guts. we don't know what exactly the hitting, but we have heard that there are people though q q for humanitarian aid, have been hit the the is there is a residential area. there is mainly residential. you can see the fest can see the houses and can see the smoke rising and even as we are speaking, you could hear return fire from the ukrainians. but for the large part of it, there's been shelves coming in from where the russians are based in too deep into the city hockey, the 2nd largest city and smoke rising up even as we speak. and you see people, people seeing from the area rubbing whatever belongings that they can and just even
9:16 pm
because it's just not safe. and this road behind me seems to run in between where the russians are. and what they aimed at ukraine says it struck russian occupied port facilities in the city of bird ganske. the blast caused a launch fire and destroyed a russian ship with more than that. and other developments across ukraine. his name was robbie's report. one months since russia's invasion, ukrainian forces are fighting back and gaining ground on thursday, sinking a russian ship in the as office sea near bird. yes. can the south one, but in mario pole? russian forces continue to pound residential areas and residents. there continue to take stock of the destruction of their city. the worst hit so far. people are now managing to trickle out all it is need and help is beginning to trickle in.
9:17 pm
well, it shows the zing receiving hamilton 8 already. they bought us some bread depots for the keats we've received. oatmeal fully till baby and we just found out that they are heading out 8 and came here. you dont always know and when you come it's too late. the city of turnikey, northeast of cave, like so many places, one month after the start of this war is unrecognizable. it breaks my heart, heart off all you grants and every free person on the planet. that's why i ask you to stand against the war. come from your offices, your homes, your schools and universities come in the name of peace, come with ukrainian symbols, to support your grain to support freedom, to support life. come to your squares, your streets, make yourselves winnable, and cured and appeal from ukraine's president. a global call to mobilize to stop
9:18 pm
the war. levine, the city levine, the region key to ukraine's war effort. as a corridor for military assistance from allies in the west end as a place to help people are all mind your 3 lawn. there wasn't enough. can she we need war to be oh we're and to go back home. today is my child's birthday and we are here. she is 10 years old. we really want to go home. let me just quickly. you know that feeling when your child is begging you, please father, save me. i haven't to leave and live like that for a 2 weeks. he decided to live by ourselves. nobody could help us. nobody could reach us and help us to recreate. because all the time aeroplanes were flying over our heads, it was bears cameras. anything. volota mere zalinski is war time. leadership has helped his popularity. but will it hold if the war goes on

and ukrainians continue to pay the highest price to defend their country. zane basra v o 0. levine on several rockets were fired towards the city of odessa on thursday, according to the ukrainian military. but they all miss their targets. odessa, ukraine's largest and most strategic seaport. and it's been preparing for an all out attack for weeks. the anticipation has resident taking matters into their own hands, says stephanie decker reports. ah, we will lay down our souls and bodies for our freedom. the words of the ukrainian national anthem wait much heavier now. no one expected to find themselves here in an undisclosed location on the outskirts of the city of odessa. oh,
9:20 pm
i will always treat the gun as if it were loaded. they are taught the basics of how to use a weapon. it's a good super recorded cars. the jeep this course takes place every day. there are no days over. we really don't know how much time we have before our russian attack on odessa. so we are trying to use all time that we have to do as much as possible for our people. we don't teach military tactics just how to operate a gun and how to do that safely. these people have never held a weapon before. they're not going to be joining the territorial army or civil defense forces as they're known, but they want to know how to be able to operate a weapon to be able to protect their homes, to protect their city. if it gets to that point for many here, it's not something that comes naturally. i never before his lip once. and though no, i am totally not in the up that i have to protect my house. oh, legs, wife and daughter are in romania. now. i cannot explain for my daughter. 06 years

old it. she's growing and asking why we can't stay together, why we cannot stay in the old home. and it's really hard, really hurt. well, what to do? what to do? the city's been shelled, anti aircraft defenses can be heard firing every day. most people here believe it's simply a matter of time before russia turns its full attention to ukraine's largest c port . all goes the lawyer and this is all new for her to have you ever used a weapon before? never, never. are you shelly? i was afraid of full weeping. do you ever imagine that this would be happening? never. no, not at all. i have a very civil live a hobby ident tango. oh yes i i dont refused to to 5 to something else. no, no, no it's not for me. i'm just
9:22 pm
a woman. but now every thorson in ukraine, a woman a man and doesn't matter. we are fight, we need to fight despite fear and anxiety. here. there is strength from all being united were told it. ah, standing together in these, unprecedented and extraordinary times. hello, stephanie decker, al jazeera in odessa, southwestern ukraine. while let's take a look now and how the 1st month of the war in ukraine has unfolded so far. president putin recognized the separatist regions of new hans and don't yet on february 21st paving the way for the invasion. 3 days later, to major cities have borne the brunt of the fighting, the se in port city of merrier pole has been besieged to start, but it's still held by ukraine and has been heavy bombardment on the 2nd largest city concave and near the separatists regents in the east ukrainian forces are
9:23 pm
clinging onto the capital. keith, with reports of pushback, russian fighters with canter offences on the outskirts of the city. now in red, are the areas captured by russia. its military advance has largely sold the un phase more than 10000000 people are now to space. that's about a quarter of ukraine's population and includes half of its children around $4000000.00. and now refugees in neighboring countries, reports very on the number of soldiers killed in both sides of a conflict. estimates are in the thousands, the un says more than a 1000 civilians have died, including nearly 100 children or less now speak to evil dolder, who's a former us ambassador to nato. he's also the president of the chicago council on global affairs, and he's joining us fire skype from chicago. thank you so much for being with us. a month on into this conflict, we've seen a real surge in diplomacy today in brussels, with a meeting of nato leaders, the g 7 and now european union leaders meeting which present biden is attending.
9:24 pm
the u. s. leader says, nato has never been more united, but is unity going to be enough to deter vladimir potent? while unity is sir essential. if anything is going to happen with regard to the war, it may not be enough in and of itself. but without the strong unity that is on display today and brussels and all the meetings that you mentioned, it is going to be impossible to put the kind of pressure that is being put on russia or, and to start changing the course of this conflict. that unity, of course, is also providing significant material and other support to the ukrainians, both humanitarian and military, in order to continue to sustain this conflict and, and is having some success in driving russian forces back. and they are to go all the way back to their own home territory, but for now at least, unity is making it possible. we're to, to start turning a tie. mrs. elder,
9:25 pm
the west is faced with a delicate balance right now between influencing the course of the battle in ukraine and avoiding being dragged into it. when it comes to natal, i mean, how long can they maintain this defensive posture? but you know, it is, it is what is it going to take basically to get a bit more involvement from from nature which is what the ukrainians are asking for . well, clearly continued involvement in terms of sending equipment, different kinds of equipment are being sent today than was at the outset of the war . so in that sense, nato countries individually are helping ukraine, but there are circumstances and then thinking in nato, at the leaders meeting, there was a discussion as both nato secretary general against delta burke and president joe biden mentioned that the nato response and how it would act will change depending
9:26 pm
on the changing circumstances, including on whether russia decides to escalate with the use of chemical weapons or, or even worse with, with nuclear weapons. in that case, the possibility of some direct nato involvement is, is more likely there's still a lot of opposition to a no fly zone to imposing no fly zone over ukraine. where do you stand on this issue? because there are some, some people saying, even beyond ukraine and ukrainian leaders, that this is what should happen now to prevent more catastrophe in the country. well, i think no fly zone is not going to be significantly effective militarily and yet, risks that very confrontation with the russian forces for no flaw, no fly zone to have any impact nato flight nato airplanes would have to shoot down russian airplanes and haul accomplice and you over ukrainian soil if, if attacked by russian air defenses, insight, ukraine, or even insight russia,
9:27 pm
those air defenses would have to be taken down. in short, you would have direct confrontation with t, nato and russian forces, and much of the damage that is being done. the horrendous damage that's being done is done by rockets by artillery fire, by longer range missiles and by tanks, of course, and no fly zone doesn't do anything about that. so if we're going to get involved and there is a reason to be involved, and i think it is incumbent on nato, not just to impose a no fly zone, but to have a material impact on the war. and that's going and taking out the dose forces that are doing the damage inside the ukraine, right? a month on what is your sense of where the conflict stands and where it's headed? how long can ukraine really hold out? well, i think the conflict is clearly in a, in a stalemate with ukrainian forces actually starting to push back some russian
9:28 pm
forces, particularly around kia, but also in the south. we are seeing some regrouping and reorganization by russian forces, particularly in the north and bellows. the russians of course, have more capability to, to bring to the fight than the ukrainians half, but the ukrainians have something the russians don't. they have a reason to fight the russian soldiers didn't know they were coming in. they don't quite know why they're, they are the ukrainians. know why they're, they're there to protect their own country against an attack and i'm, i think they will be willing to fight for as long as they are, they have equipment which the west is willing to pay them to supply them. where does the relationship stand as far as washington and moscow are concerned? we've heard from very strong language from president biden, who's accused president putting of being a war criminal does not further escalate and make this a really dangerous situation. shouldn't the u. s. tried to be bringing russia to
9:29 pm
the negotiating table and trying perhaps to find some sort of, you know, compromise with the russians while the russians are at the negotiating table. unfortunately, they're not negotiating with great seriousness. i, i've heard and on good good authority that there are continuing to be conversations between washington moscow including at significantly higher level in order to make clear where, where we stand on on, on the kinds of issues. but this is very simple. this work can be over today if lot of mere boot decides to pull his forces back. he, he moved into ukraine for no reason. he was and it was unprovoked ukraine did not pose any threat to russia. and so the way this conflict ends is very simple, it's bloody me boot and just withdraws. his forces moves back to where we were at the outset of this war, or even better takes his forces out of crimea and an eastern eastern ukraine. this
9:30 pm
thing will be over. so this is not a question of the united states having to make nice to russia, or indeed to get involved in a diplomacy. it's very simple, flattering reputed, made a mistake, he should admit, so and, and take his forces back to russia, which is where they belong. thank you so much for talking to us evil down their former us ambassador to nato joining us there from chicago. we appreciate your time, so thank you. my pleasure. i still ahead on al jazeera. we'll take a look at how the world news and a truce in t grey will tell you why fighting is said to stop in. no, let me help you. i'm alex could topple us here in doha. fully dealt with the u. s. navy's new sensor network gives her an apartment total surveillance over the gulf and in sport. good news for the brooklyn, that fair star kyrie irving. the vaccine landed in new york city is over flashing.

9:34 pm
they're wanting these are on al jazeera, i. reminder of the main developments in ukraine u. s. present, joe biden says vladimir proteins actions in ukraine has made the nato alliance more united than ever. leaders at a g 7 meeting in brussels have urged russian president not to use biological, chemical or nuclear weapons. there's been more shelling in ukraine, 2nd largest city concave 6 people were killed and 15 wounded when russian artillery land in front of a postal center where people were found to be queuing for humanitarian aid. and united nations has more than 10000000 people are now displaced. that's about a quarter of ukraine's population and enclosed half of its children. around 4000000 are now refugees in neighboring countries. ukraine has accused russia deliberately targeting hospitals. moscow denies that is clear and increasing number of children are being caught up in the fighting. rob mcbride reports from live in the frontline city of mich alive, the maternity hospital tries to operate as normally as the war will allow. tamara
9:35 pm
craft job is close to giving birth the day before a different part of this hospital was hit by a shell, but nobody was hurt severe menu guzzling in over time. every day you get used to it more and more especially ones explosions are some were far away. it seems of the i in another country in the western city of live, another clinic, this one treating children with critical heart conditions. this unit has just been moved from the capital, keith, it's part of a national initiative to relocate essential services and companies away from the fighting in the east to the relative safety of the west. miss, beside would you say we are saving, kids have critical heart problems who would die without operations? and of course, each child is important. there are hundreds of them, very stressful and was going to living and other towns and cities in the west have
