stretcher widow, 1st thing on their leg was injured and i'm not sure exactly what went on or what was going on. and then we saw after that to amber, this coming out just like hopping on one night. obviously they got her into like as well. so i'm not quite sure what's going on or what's going on. lesson bring in allan fisher, he's joining us from washington, d. c. n. m, the, the press secretary has now confirmed that the president has been briefed allen on the latest developments regarding this incident in new york. what more than i mean he's he's in the oval office at the moment of i just take a look over my shoulder. a can see the marine in the dress uniform that says that he is there. he has been informed, he's been kept up to date with what is happening. and senior white house officials have been in touch with both the mayor and the new york police commissioner and offered them any assistance. now the president is due to leave for iowa in a boat for 45 minutes time. i just asked him if there was any possibility that he may divert to new york, either on the way they are the way back at the moment. his plan is still to go to iowa and to return later a obviously that, that the white house is,
5:31 pm
is monitoring this situation, given, particularly in the last 24 hours that made such a big deal about gun crime. that just to put this in perspective, this year in the united states, that it been 131 my shootings, including what is happening in new york at the moment. and in the was $131.00 must shootings at the number of total deaths, including suicides and other issues as well. that had been $11872.00 deaths at that the, from a gun here in the united states this year. so far, it's april, the $122022.00. so you can see why this has become a priority for joe biden to do something about the number of deaths that are being recorded on the streets of the united states through gun violence. he realizes that people are worried about it, that people are scared about it. and he also realizes it's his job as president to do something about it. so he'll be using what political capitelli has to try and
5:32 pm
push through some level of change on capital hill. but to do that, he needs support from both democrats and republicans, and is by no means guaranteed that he be able to get that in both the house and the senate to make any meaningful change. add to the laws here in the united states. when it comes to dealing with guns and gun violence, yell, and so to what extent, i mean, is he going to receive a whole lot of pushback from those who are against changing the laws? of course, like like the lobbies like the gun lobby over in the u. s. but it did, there are some people in the gun lobby who was simply, well naught except any changes at all. the thing that any move by the government to do anything of it when it comes to guns as an attack on the 2nd amendment, therefore unconstitutional, and therefore should be challenged and should be defeated in the courts. of course, if it goes through a both the senate and the house, then they can go to the supreme court and say, well this is what people voted. and the other thing to remember,
5:33 pm
as i mentioned earlier, there is overwhelming support among the public for some changes in gun laws such as background checks. they also want to see a limit on the size of magazines that people can have. there is a support too. for a change in legislation, when it comes to assault rifles weapons that were built at for the army to be used in war, no being used randomly on the streets of the united states. of course, we don't know what weapons have been used here in new york. that is still part of the inquiry that is ongoing. as we said earlier, this is being monitored not just here at the white house, but also at the department of justice. and by the f b i to see what the next steps are. but clearly there will be a lot of calls over the next few days as inevitably the are. when we see these, my shooting situations in the united states about some sort of change in the gun laws. and inevitably, when the gun lobby gets its wheels moving again,
5:34 pm
those efforts seemed to dissipate, as someone once told me, remember the sandy hook shooting when a number of children were gun down in their class along with their teachers. if the u. s. wasn't prepared to change the gun laws after sandy hook, then there is no chance that there'll be any change in the gun laws if you go back to the united kingdom to 1996. and there was a similar shooting in dunblane, where children were gun down in a school in scotland and immediately there was support and government action to change the gun laws in the united kingdom. that simply wouldn't happen here because the gun laws, the gun lobby, is incredibly strong, incredibly wealthy, and has a lot of power on capital hill. raid allen, i mean, as you're saying, i mean this issue is a political hot potato for the last few. 6 presidents as far as i can remember of in the u. s. so certainly not only joe biden, but how much pressure is he going to be under now to do more,
5:35 pm
particularly after this latest shooting in brooklyn, in a very busy area on a tuesday morning that there was the young woman who was on the south lawn with joe biden, on monday when they were talking about the changes on ghost guns, she was the victim of a mass shooting at a school in california. 2 of our friends died and she said she was tired of politicians, offering thoughts and prayers. and that's inevitably what you see on social media. a lot of politicians will help the offering thoughts and prayers for the victims of various shootings. if you go back to that pulse night club in orlando to the mass shooting in las vegas, still the one of the washed mass shooting events ever in the united states were more than 50 people were killed in there were shootings as well in places like oregon in new york, and there have been all over the country, and thoughts and prayers are offered that young women says they need more than thoughts and prayers. they actually need action. they need politicians to do something. and we have seen protests after the shooting in,
5:36 pm
in florida at the school shooting there. when children from all over the country came to the gates of the white house and said that there has to be some action. so there is overwhelming public support. but at the core of some politicians support is a strong belief that the 2nd amendment it cannot be touched, it cannot be changed. it is there i and should be respected at all points. and therefore people will. i argue vociferously and debate angrily to make sure that there are no changes in the gun laws in the united states, and that often is enough to sweep politicians away from taking action that they can see that the wider public here in the united states would certainly support alan and just back to this, this particular incident unfolding right now. it as a developing story over the past hour. so just a reminder for any of you as tuning and right now to al jazeera shooting incident in a brooklyn metro station. and we are hearing that several people have been as shots
5:37 pm
. the suspect is still at large and allen the, the press secretary jam khaki, has tweeted that the president has been briefed as you've been telling us. and that the white house are in touch with the mayor of new york, eric adams, as well as the police commissioner to offer any assistance as needed. what type of assistance would that look like right now? well, it depends how this investigation by new york police goes in the next few hours. it may well be that they need some specialist back up from the f b i that would be available to them. it me well mean that they need to release federal funds so that they can pay officers over time or do some basic functions. it would really be up to new york to make the ask, as they see here in the united states, tell us what you need. we will help you get that and it will be delivered to you. so as we said right at the beginning of this conversation, senior officials are in contact and that will be part of the national security team,
5:38 pm
will be officials from the department of justice. it will also be officials from the f b i at the moment as gabriel rightly pointed out the f b. i have a huge field office in new york, so that would have been called to all hands, essentially, to get to brooklyn as quickly as they possibly can. and f b i. agents would have been involved in that. but if the f b, i is then activated because the police think that this is a terrorist incident, then the f b, i will become much more heavily involved and that will become a federal investigation. but for the moment, we understand that this is very much an investigation that has been led, been driven and been headed by n y, p d. and if the new york police needs more facilities, then they just have to make a call to the point people here at the white house. and the white house is seeing that they will do what they can to get what new york needs as quickly as possible. okay, allen, a stand by for a moment. we are going to let you go and we will cross back to gabriel. he is on
5:39 pm
doubt who is joining us from new york. gabriel, just to find out from you a whether 1st of all we've heard from the mayor, eric adams and, and what kind of supports do they need if they've asked for any support from the white house? because as i was just discussing with alan, the press secretary has tweeted that we will offer any assistance as needed as of now the new york police department doesn't need any help or they haven't indicated that they do because says alan pointed out that this is a crime investigation as of now and not a terrorist and investigation. so while you do see the agent on scene, that is normal. situation like this. this is very much department investigation right now until that potentially could change. but as of now it is not. this is a crime, a situation that they are investigating and the new york police department,
5:40 pm
the biggest grease department, nighted states. they're well equipped to handle a situation like this as of now, if they need some sort of federal up, they will certainly ask for and receive it if needed. presumably, in terms of why this, there is so much uncertainty right now on why and why p b has not confirmed the exact number of people shot a little bit more on the suspect. it's because we're getting a better sense, perhaps on the confusion of the shooting and why it is so complex. getting report still unconfirmed by n y p d. that this suspect might have set up some sort of smoke device while on a subway corner. and then began shooting in the subway car while it was moving and met the shooting could have taken place between one subway station and
5:41 pm
concluded when the train reached another subway station. that is what the picture that we're starting to get here. and that's perhaps why there is so much confusion by witnesses of what happened, where it happened, how many people were, were injured or shocked in this incident. but that is so starting to see the picture that we're starting to see from video sources and the police department that are starting to talk a little bit more on why this is such a confusing situation and why they're trying to spend more time gathering menu. the facts, as they can, is perhaps, was not just a situation where someone came into one subway station fired off, shot and ran away. might be a little bit more confusing than at the scene. might actually be 2 scenes or in a subway car. while it is moving, so these are some of the facts that we're going to be waiting to hear from my p from. usually they speak pretty quickly once they have the information and the
5:42 pm
facts they can release. they'll usually speak press conference fairly quickly to get the, the facts out there as quickly as they can. so the. a by that, by the fact that this is going on 2 hours now since this shooting took place and the fact that the n y has not tell the press conference yet lead you to believe 2 things. number one is the facts are a little confusing and they're still trying to gather these facts before they can read a number 2, they're quite busy trying to find the suspect, right. you know, as of now, the suspect has not been apprehended. yeah, i just wanted to ask you about the suspect. in fact, i mean, what more are we learning about this particular person and is it confirmed that it is just one person, or could there be multiple suspects? but it's not confirmed right now in y, p d is insinuating that it's one person, but this is still part of the investigation. we should hear that very soon. but
5:43 pm
they are, they believe that it is one suspect. the difficulty they're having is that they don't know, or at least they have not publicly yet how the suspect slid. did he flee on another subway train? did the suspect chloe, through the subway tracks, did the suspect out of the subway station and run down the street somewhere. to see these are examples, but simply, this is what the n y p d is trying to gather right now. and this is urgent information because they need to try to apprehend this person. right? so because this took place in a subway station or perhaps on a train, that's what makes it so much more complicated. so gabriel, where are things right now would be investigation and you know, particularly also the question i suppose, which they will be looking to find out the answer for why and what was the motive for this? well yeah, my motivation is clearly a big part of this and that's,
5:44 pm
it's way too early for that right now. but that is going to clearly be part of this investigation. where do things stand right now? listen, there's a lot going on right now. there's thousands of law enforcement officials at the scene. they're under to thousands more band out through the city, looking for the suspect. there's a lot of information out there, some not confirm some has been confirmed. the big picture is this multiple people shot at the subway at a subway station in brooklyn, 36th street station overwriting all of this right now is basically the people that have been shot with that were thinking 5, maybe 6. but even beyond that right now, the urgency is finding the suspect and everything else for law enforcement right now in new york, the secondary briefing, the media even is secondary. at this point, the top priority is
5:45 pm
a new york police department and law enforcement officials to identify the suspect and apprehend the suspect as soon as possible. gabriel, just to remind us once again of the latest casualty figure is how many people have been shot. how many have been injured? what we're being told now from various different sources is we think between 5 and 6 people shot. again, that is not completely confirmed from nypd yet, but that's from various different sources. we're told that perhaps to or critical condition. the new york fire department has confirmed that 13 people were injured and transported the area hospitals that does not. all of them are necessarily gunshot victims. we're still waiting on the gunshot victims exact number at this hour, but multiple people at this juncture were shot at the subway station.
5:46 pm
it's all happened by the way, as you may or eric adams, a former police officer himself, just initiated a new client program to try to bring down crime li, inserting new york police officers to patrol the subways. that did not happen for the last multiple years. the police were brought were not patrolling subway stations on a regular basis. that was a decision by the previous, mary administration, administration wanting to use the resources that are said elsewhere. the previous may or the current mayor at adams effort to try to bring down crime, including crime in subway stations in new york city. as we initiated a program. just in the last couple months of quoting and my pd back in the subway is writing subways, patrolling the platforms as a way to ad safety and bring down that's unrelated to the shooting situation. we
5:47 pm
don't know if there are a police officers in there at the time. the shooting metal all come out later. but the big picture of all of this is the mayor. making a big effort is one of the key initiatives to try to bring down raising crime in new york. and one of it was trying to been down crime in subway stations and putting police back in there on patrol. so we'll probably be hearing from, from the mayor, matt, in the coming days as this investigation moves forward. ok, thank you. gabrielle is on those reporting for us from in new york, and that is a live picture right now from brooklyn, where as you've been hearing, there's been a shooting at a subway station and several people have been injured. well. one witnesses described what was happening at the scene of the a tankless listen. we didn't actually go downstairs, which was we did it, but you know, we saw i'm coming out with a stretcher with
5:48 pm
a person on it. there was injured. i'm not sure exactly what went on or what was going on. and then we saw after that to amber, this coming out to people like hopping on one they obviously they got hurt like as well. so i'm not quite sure what's going on or what's going on. alan fisher joining us from washington, d. c. and the white house, any official comment yet, allen from, from jo biden's administration. i had not beyond the fight that the president has been briefed and the senior white house officials are offering any support they can to with the new york mayor and the police commissioners. a st. joe biden is due to leave here in about 25 minutes. he will walk to the helicopter before a flying to a joint, but base andrews where he will leave for a trip to iowa. during that walk, we might get some comment from him. clearly, that will be the question that most of the reporters will ask. that even though this is a day, the where the white house is hitting inflation figures that do not match what their
5:49 pm
expectations would have been for a job biden presidency this far in. but certainly we know that joe biden is very committed to doing something about the guns issue in the united states. i've just been looking back at some of the the match, shootings we were talking about. i, when we spoke earlier, if you go back to 2012, the shooting, it is sandy hook, which was an elementary school in connecticut. there at $26.00. people were killed including 20 children age between 5 and 6. if you go back to 2016, there was the pulse night shooting in miami 49, people were killed 50. if you include the shooter himself. then in las vegas, there was the biggest match shooting that the united states is seen in recent years . where 60 people were shot dead. and then there was the portland school shooting in 2018, which led to protests in schools all across the country were 17 children were killed. and it was after that shooting that many people thought at the voice of
5:50 pm
young people would be hurt. and perhaps politicians then would start to do something about that. the gun laws here in the united states. but again, as we had from one victim on the south lawn yesterday, they got thoughts and prayers, but not much in action. so what did your biden do? 24 hours ago or almost 24 hours ago, he decided that there should be more money for local policing, more money for the department of justice to do their best job that they possibly can when it comes to combating gun crime. and he also said he was going to take action against so called gorse guns, guns that can be bought over the internet that can be bought built and then shoot. essentially people can put them together. there are no marks to tell people that where these guns were from no serial number a tall and joe biden wants to change the rules so that anyone who manufactures these guns these kits has to put a serial number on them and record the person that they were sent to you can get these guns without a background check, doesn't matter what the laws in the state are. and many of these guns have been
5:51 pm
found at scenes of crime. there's no suggestion at this point that that's what happened here. but these gorse guns are turning all over the place. in fact, joe biden said that had been a tenfold increase in the number of so called goose guns being used in crime from 2016 until last year. so in a period of just 5 years, you can see just how much these gorse guns have a kind of problem for law enforcement. he wants to do something about it. and he said, of course there will be a reaction. people say that it will be extreme, and he said, well, is it extreme to try and protect police officers to protect families, to stop these guns getting in the hands of people who may commit a mass shooting or a terrorist attack? no, he said this wasn't extreme, this was simply common sense and that's how he is going to frame how he wants to move forward on the gun issue because it will become an issue, particularly for the next week or so. the consent for those who campaigned at to change the gun loss here in the united states is it will become a big issue for the next week or so. and then it will disappear again because
5:52 pm
a lot of the time after the shootings we hear from those who are very much on the defensive, that it's too soon that it would be politicizing a mass shooting to talk about guns. and then the news agenda moves on and people tend to forget about these things. so joe biden says he's come it to do something that will be a test of the final 2 years of his presidency. yeah, al alan. so as you're saying, i mean he did take these steps on monday to rein in the use of a what, what's been described as ghost guns. so how much pressure is he going to be under a to, to perhaps do something more or take even further steps, considering this incident has just happened in and brooklyn, in new york on a busy tuesday rush hour morning. of course, as he finds out more details about what has happened in new york that might well strengthen his hand if there is a ghost gun in there that will certainly strengthen his hand. if there is an assault rifle in, there's no suggestion that that's the case. but if there is one somewhere involved
5:53 pm
in this, that will strengthen his hand. he will look to see what the details are. and then his political team will look to see where they can get an advantage. you know, that might be cynical, but that's the real world that's real politic. that's how you do these things. and they will see what advantage they can do to move forward on their agenda in reducing gun crime. as i said, a lot of people will see this as an attack on guns at during the election campaign, which seems so long ago. know, a lot of people were saying don't vote for joe biden. he will come after your guns . he will go door to door. in fact, people were saying that as people were going round the houses to check on the vaccination status, an offer vaccinations during covered that that was just a dry run for people going round the houses to round up the guns. that's the sort of conspiracy theory that they are fighting against in the background. he might be able to hear marine one that is that helicopter, that will take joe biden from the white house to andrews joint joint base, andrews,
5:54 pm
and his flight to iowa. your course will continue to be fully informed, but we're hoping that somewhere between the oval office and the walk to marine one, what should take place in about 20 minutes time. we might get some comment from joe biden about what is happening and developing conley and new york. alan stand by for a mother actually. i'll just. 2 keep you with us for a, for just a moment more alan and, and you were saying a few moments ago about so you were discussing the statistics and facts in the rise in gun violence. and the increased number is that the u. s. has seen recently how worried and concerned are americans going to be at this latest incident in brooklyn? i it will worry everyone, i mean, a lot of people live in a suburban bubble. so the thing that, that sort of thing is never going to happen. but when this is happening in a major city, as many people are heading off to work, that makes them stop and think, they will say, what happens here?
5:55 pm
what would i do then? the then become slightly weary. on the next 345, johnny's, we've seen it in many, many places. you start to change the we, you travel the way you commute the way you go to what you are looking at people as they get on the train. thinking should i be worried about them? i concerned about them. do i need to move the cottage on my dunny to golf at the next station? is it that much of a concern? and that slowly starts to see pen to every day life. and so people become deeply concerned and deeply what he to but these sort of incidents and this white house is very aware of that. and the aware of the political impact it can have, particularly with the elections back in the, in november. now it may seem that we're talking about new elections a lot, but remember, a lot of the calculus of decisions that are made from the oval office are done with the idea of how do i get reelected? what i stand for election, how do i get more of my party elected when it comes to the midterm?
5:56 pm
so it would be wrong to say that this won't become part of that calculus. that is certainly something that will be of concern to joe biden. and i suspect that the polls that have said that people are concerned about the rise in violent crime and gun violence. we will see a spike in that, in the coming days in the next few opinion polls. because we are seeing another mass shooting. and remember i said that been $131.00 of them in the united states since the beginning of the year. a lot of them don't get coverage beyond the local news area. this is nationwide news because of where it's happened. what time has happened, the number of people that have been injured, and that will seep into people's consciousness. and me, well, affect the way they feel about their safety in the united states. okay, alan, thank you so much for the time being allan fisher as a reporter at the white house. let sam bring in christmas salumi. now she's falling developments in new york for us in kristen, according to the reuters news agency. the us attorney general a has received the preliminary briefing now and is also monitoring the situation in
5:57 pm
brooklyn. that's according to the spokesperson and data is the light fixture right there from brooklyn. kristen, tell us what you're hearing on your end while we're hearing about a scene that is still very chaotic in brooklyn. the shooting of course happened during morning rush hour and police responded to the scene. immediately. chaos ensued tried to get control of the situation. so we know there's a lot happening right now. a lot of breathing is taking place, a lot of speculation, but official word at this stage is still hard to come by. we know that 13 people were injured and brought to the hospital. it's believed about 5 of them were shot. we know that police are looking for a suspect, someone that was wearing a gas mask in an orange vest likely a construction vast or an empty a subway. vast and official uniform people reported seeing smoke on the subway
5:58 pm
platform and smoking devices. there was concern about explosives being detonated or potential explosives on the scene. so officials move very quickly to empty out the platform of the subway station. get people away from the scene. but we've been seeing these horrible scenes of people injured on the station platform play out in the fact that this is happening during the morning rush hour when people were on their way to work into school. of course, a concern for many in new york city, a city where rising crime in particular subway crime has become a very hot but an issue, a big concern for citizens and something that the mayor of new york, eric adams has been trying to address. but in terms of official word on the investigation, i'm still waiting to get an update from police sources as they sort together just a few moments ago, cell phones across manhattan were ringing with an alert from the police. they are
5:59 pm
still cautioning people to stay away from that subway station, citing an active investigation right now. they say that they do not believe there are any active explosive devices, but earlier there as a warning of potential explosives. so it's unclear at this stage whether or not those were just smoking devices or explosive devices that didn't go off. we are waiting for clarification from the police as they have changed their guidance as the morning has gone on. and as you say, cursed in a very fluid situation, we'll leave it there for now. customer, no, me. thank you. ah, hi there. i'm kim vanelle. this is the news are live from doha, with continuing coverage of the breaking news from the united states where there's been a shooting at a new york subway station. 5 people have been shot at the 36th street station in
6:00 pm
brooklyn. police are searching for the attacker reading actually go downstairs with regard. we did it. but you know, we saw on bill is coming out with a stretcher. widow percy on their leg was injured. i'm not sure exactly what went on or what was going on. and then we saw after that to ambulance coming out with like, hopping on one leg. obviously they got her and their leg as well. so i'm not quite sure what's going on or was going to new york police are telling people to stay away from the area of the shooting which is hung to the busy chinatown and is popular for its views of the stature of liberty. it's also a large warehouse district where many creative businesses have set up. all right, these are live pictures from the scene there. you can see oversee the fire department is there, as well as the n y p d. we have kristen salumi standing by who's falling developments for us from new york, kristen to start.
