weapons defect factory. that's how the russian defense minister describing it. a factory that they say was involved in the production, the manufacture of an anti aircraft, missiles and land to sea missiles. we went down to that factory to day were denied access by the authorities, or no officials were prepared to speak to us. certainly though, we saw damage to the building and we saw em large scale damage to the factory itself. beyond that, the factory walls, no damage, seemingly to civilian infrastructure in the immediate area are certainly very slight. but sir, the ukrainian government, it has taken them pretty much all day to make any kind of statement on these strikes in the last hour. also, a member of the yale, the head of the key of military regional military administration, described in a statement what it says were 3 strikes last night on 3 objects in cave and
9:03 pm
didn't rule out more strikes in the future. of course, this attack comes only hours after the russian military admitted that their flagship and for the black sea fleet had sunk after what the russian military said was an explosion on board. of course, the ukraine is, as we've been reporting, say that they were responsible for the sinking of that vessel and a new and they used a land to see miss isles, a strike the certainly the americans are members of the american ministration pentagon of said and with a huge blow to the russians. it's also important to recognize that this strike comes a day after a warning from the russian defense ministry, the russian defense ministry saying that it would target what it describe is command positions of positions of military significance in kiev. if the ukrainians

and they were continued to attack targets across the russian border, now we have no confirmation of these reported attacks. so the, the russians a say against russian towns across the border. and of course, it comes in the context of the sphere of what is often described as false flags. these are basically manufactured soil falsified pieces of information em all video evidence of reported incidents by the russians that, that western the western allies of ukraine accused the russians of using to give them a pretext to, to respond to those attacks and hit targets inside ukraine. it's also a huge impulse to recognize that these, the strikes last night were the 1st major strikes in or around cave, since russian forces left the. ready area more than 2 weeks ago. and some of those russian attacks that we've been hearing about in ukraine also involved the port

just after talking to us from keith. well, military experts estimate that russia has lost almost 3000 pieces of equipment in the ukraine war. the losses are being blamed and advanced weapons that nato countries have given ukraine and rushes miscalculations. russell, sadder reports from cave tanks, helicopters, personnel carriers, tens of millions of dollars worth of equipment all destroyed. and these are just a small portion of the losses suffered by one of the most powerful armies in the world. when russia began is offensive it hope to capture you. pains, capitol keep within days, but you re his army wrists with the assault, evidently, the russian army and ethnic problems with moral, with its equipment, with its training on his doctrine. and as a result,

russell to answer your question directly. russia has been defeated in the field to a point where it was effectively routed from the north of the country. ukrainian armed forces have taken advantage, often ambushes russian troops and columns. in less than 2 months since russia invaded ukraine, it's military has lost powers of soldiers, according to ukrainian officials. it's more than the united states did in a 20 years of war in afghanistan, and nearly a decade in iraq combined. they say russia has lost at least 479 tanks, 496 infant and fighting vehicles. 28 crafts for shapes. 32 helicopters, 784 tracks, vehicles and jeeps. in total, the russians have lost nearly $3000.00 pieces of equipment, and these are considered conservative estimates. the highest prof,

which claims the island as its territory. here's my promise to you in the time with nice people. we're going to start making china pay a greater price for what they're doing all over the world. with taiwan producing 90 percent of the world's high end semiconductor products. it is a country of global significance of global consequence of global impact. and therefore, it should be understood that the security of taiwan has a global impact for those who would wish an ill. martinez accusing the u. s. of in flaming tension. and it says it's going down a dangerous path by sending politicians to taiwan. it has yahoo! all in the united states and taiwan are colluding with each other. and some people deliberately compare taiwan in ukraine to very different issues in an attempt to confuse the public and take advantage of the chaos. as i said,
9:12 pm
this behavior of playing with fire is aimed at changing the current status quo of the cross straight relations on taiwan seems parallels between itself and ukraine, a smaller neighbor in the shadow of a superpower. darwin, he's officials of raised concerns that rushes action stood emboldened china to attempt to take the island by force by the island may have a so called silicon shield its dominance of the global semiconductor industry. and most of the chips that go into everything from phones to microwaves, to m. r i machines are made in taiwan, was already a global shortage of semiconductor ships. and no other country is close to catching up with ty, once production capacity. and the u. s. doesn't want to see the industry under chinese control. lim, join now by professor peter harris from colorado. state university is the co author of the paper, broken nest deterring china from invading taiwan is joining us from fort collins in colorado. good to have you with us, sir. on al jazeera that we heard china's foreign ministry spokesperson job early jun, saying that people deliberately comparing taiwan and ukraine were,
9:13 pm
which were 2 very different issues that were trying to do it in an attempt to confuse the public. is there enough of a parallel between the 2 to prompt u. s. senators, to make this trip to tie one? i think it's reasonable for us lawmakers to, to go to taiwan, to signal america's commitment to taiwan and to, to highlight the similarities that exist between taiwan and ukraine. but i think it's also incumbent upon people like me, an academic and you and the media to point out the differences that exist between ukraine and taiwan. because those are pretty significant to how would you describe those differences? but one difference is why was mentioned in your report, which is taiwan has some kind of economic leverage over china. and in a way that ukraine really did not have and does not have over bush time one semiconductor industry,
9:14 pm
as was mentioned in your report is responsible for produce and over 90 percent of the well high end microchips, china, like the rest of the world, is highly dependent upon access to those chips for any advanced economy is the threat of losing access to taiwan. semiconductor industry is, is a serious threat and it's one the, at least some intelligence reports suggested shooting, ping take seriously. and his state, his hand open till now. when it comes to contemplating seizing taiwan by force, i realized that i'm going to be oversimplifying this. but if the semiconductor industry is so vital to the rest of the world, one would imagine that any foreign power would really like to get hold of that. would that not really be an incentive for some sort of takeover bait as opposed to deterrence? so i don't think the china ones taiwan because of its semiconductor industry time.
9:15 pm
china and leaders in beijing would, would certainly want to see unification with taiwan. even if it was an agrarian society with no high tech industries, what, what time when use officials and certainly industry leaders in taiwan have said in the past, is this silicon shield the idea that taiwan friends around the world and other high advanced economies that depend on access to time when he's semiconductors, what kind of rushed to the defense of taiwan in the ban of a chinese invasion. that's the current formulation of the silicon shield is that the rest of the world would have an incentive to intervene militarily to defend taiwan. in the event of a chinese invasion, taiwanese of hope, that thread, that latent threat of a global military coalition will keep them safe for me from a chinese invasion. while i argue, am i call us a john mckinney argue, is that the silicon shield could probably batter used if taiwan made it into an
9:16 pm
autonomous, independent deterrent. that is, it's risky for taiwan to rely on the united states. and those 2 rushed to a defense because they may not. china is gotten nuclear weapons, and leaders like joe biden and other leaders around the world may be very reluctant to intervene on timelines behalf. given china is a new play. i'm state. what is taiwan threatened to destroy, disable its semiconductor industry in the event of an invasion? that's a credible threat that taiwan can make by itself and autonomous threat. it wouldn't require the intervention of any outside power to carry out that threat. and in doing so, it would deprive china of access to these chips that it needs for economic growth. very serious that the chinese leaders will take seriously, though the chinese communist party bases, it's legitimacy on its ability to provide jobs to provide economic growth. if that
9:17 pm
was compromised by an invasion of taiwan, and they knew that that was the case, then it may give them serious reason to think twice about invading in the 1st place . one could imagine that would be regarded as a serious threat. it would also have serious consequences for taiwan effectively destroying its own economy. is that something that logically, that would be followed through? do you think. ringback that's a criticism that we've heard the taiwanese would be reluctant to disable destroy the foundries in the event of an invasion. and my response to that is, you know, it really comes down to how much did the time when he's valued, defacto political independence, will china. and if the argument is that, and i read an off at a time when he's publication making this argument. but time when he would need those boundaries to be operating on the p. c. occupation to give employment to tie
9:18 pm
when he's just telegraphed to beijing the, the time when he's not serious about defending their own island. if time, when you say, well, you know, if, if the p l. a troops land on, on time when the soil and we're, we're facing an invasion and potentially an occupation. we have more things to worry about than, than the operation of semiconductor factors. and we would disable and we would blow them up then that instead of telegraph serious resolves to beijing, the taiwanese mean business, they do not want to be under payoff. jurisdiction did not want to be under the control and that they would take this very serious, very deliberate and economically very consequential step of disabling foundries in the event of an invasion professor, peter harris. we appreciate you being with us and all this here. so thank you very much indeed for your time. thank you. time or had on the news i including more than

wave of emotions like you're sad, you're reading all the time. you. so it's, it's totally different reality right now. and it's hard to, to get to the point when you feel that happiness as you used to feel before. so it will take a while, of course, how many here have been traveling through weeks? they arrive tired, hungry and confused. most don't speak spanish or english, and are relying entirely on help from volunteers. first of all, they all nervous because lots of of them didn't everybody in mexico, they know that the quantities ventures place. so when they come in the, in the airport little bit nervously, we try to keep calm them and build and relax. where will we will help you, how again we will help you. there are also dozens of families here with young children with. 6 that they spend much of their time listening carefully in case

their numbers are called. though many seem eager to cross the border into the united states, others tell us what they want is to go home. i am fell ah, very tired. of course. i hope that soon i will come to your crane. i'm not to gone on to stay in the usa for long. ah, i hope's ads in summer. i can come back to my country to my family, to my mother browser us and all that laughed here. ah, more 7000 ukrainians have arrived in p one and since the start of the war in february, since mexico has not imposed any restrictions on ukrainian travelers, more arriving every day. conditions may seem crowded at this refugee camp in the city of t want to write on the border with the united states, but new arrivals have actually declined in recent days. local authorities, however, tell us that the population here is likely to grow significantly in the coming
9:34 pm
weeks. the us border officials are processing about 50 ukrainian refugees every hour while ukrainians arriving in p one and only stay at the shelter for a few days. new arrivals are quick to take the place of those who leave. though there's concerned the sports complex being used to how's refugees could soon overflow. state officials say a 2nd shelter would quickly be made available if needed. a memo zoning me live now from towana. manuel, you said the 7000 people have arrived so far, that number has dropped very slightly, but there is an expectation. it's going to go back up. why is that? that's right, rob. if you look around the, the camp that we're at right now, this sport center that's been turned into a refugee shelter run by volunteers and organizers that are doing a fairly good job of keeping things very much in line. but they themselves tell us
9:35 pm
that the number of people, the population currently is a lot less than that they've seen in recently in recent weeks. now the reason being is that it's wholly we care in mexico. it's also spring break in the united states us. but this amounts to one of the busiest travel weeks of the year for mexico. and what happens is that a many ukrainians were trying to get to seek one or actually stuck in other temporarily stuck in other mexican cities like mexico city and, and came coon. so what we're seeing is this expectation that in the coming weeks as of next week, we should see that population balloon once more. there is an expectation also and may be concerned that there may not be enough room here at this shelter to house everyone. but the authorities here in by california have also said that, that there is an expectation that that could happen. and there is a contingency plan. if that were to happen, they would open up a 2nd shelter to house, as many people as needed, once refugees make it to the border to enter into the us. what's the processing
9:36 pm
like? we haven't had any statistics of from this month yet from customs and border patrol regarding the number of people that are being processed daily. but what we are hearing from volunteers here is that it's anywhere between $40.50. just an estimated 50 people every hour that are being processed at the by, by u. s. customs and border patrol. so the way that this is working out, the way that we're getting those numbers is that every hour there is a bus that leaves this refugee shelter toward a chapparal carrying as many as 50 people as yet. but it is a port of entry into the united states. it's actually been closed for the last 2 years. but a special exception has been made by the united states to allow ukrainians only to be to be process. but again, is about a 1000 ukrainians in tiquana right now. and the reason why this is becomes such a sort of popular destination for you create is trying to reach the united states.
9:37 pm
is that mexico doesn't have any restrictions when it comes to travel into their country. so it's become one of the easiest or at the very least one of the pathways that provides the least amount of obstacles for them to seek humanitarian assistance in the united states as my or upload tornadoes from toronto manual, thank you very much, deeds no to says that it has unanimously adopted a so called poison pill plan that could block elan mosques. takeover bid. my social media giant says the move could enable its investors to realize the full value of their investment and force must have pay shareholders a premium for the company mosque who owns tesla and space. ex lucidly increased his stake in the social media platform to 9 percent. he claims twitter falls short of its free speech principles and needs a complete overhaul. well, jim anderson's a technology expert and the social media sector, lead for glossary ventures. he's joining us now from new york. thank you very much indeed for being with us on this response by twitter. how much is this about
9:38 pm
protecting the values of twitter and how much of it is just trying to get you on last to pay a lot more money? well there's a 3rd element i, i think it is certainly a mix of both the certainty or maybe more aptly stated, the uncertainty associated with anything to do with elan, moscow. even if you just look at the stock price, i think the stock market itself is quite uncertain as to whether even mosque is, is serious about this deal and really can drive it to the finish line. or will he just wake up one day and decide, hey, i was just kidding. this wasn't serious at all. so i think it's a combination of things on the board. very much wants to understand. of course they want the highest value they can get. they also want to see a degree of seriousness. yeah, let's talk about the seriousness because the lawn mosque of course, is notorious for, for you. so we say for doing these things and making them joke a are, are placing some doubt and being vague as you were talking about. where does this leave the twitter does? this is it did, is a defenseless. is that a way of fighting back apart from this?
9:39 pm
well, they're not defenceless, and i think it's a very uncomfortable position when the world's richest man says he doesn't have confidence in the management team that specifically that's probably a pretty uncomfortable position for the c e o to to be and, but he's, i think done a nice job, at least in his messaging to twitter, employees. thank. look, there are a lot of distractions, but our day to day job hasn't changed. we have customers, we have a product, we need to keep doing what we're doing. and it's easier said than done for sure. but ultimately, you know, this is a little bit of a slide show. it's an enormously consequential slide show, depending on how it turns out. or it could just turn out to be nothing. and one thing we have definitely seen about your mouth because he loves the spotlight and he's shown it ability to effectively hijack the new cycle by doing these things, making the tweet, making these offers. and i think you very much enjoy being provocative in that regard. and twitter is not defenseless, but they're, they're certainly at the mercy of whatever you want is going to do. they're going to have to react. if mom doesn't get twitter,

it's not going to be the end of the matter. or do you think he's going to carry on just settling on the sidelines as a way? you know, i think i would never say your mouth is done because he's he always seems to have another trick up. it's wave he has talked before about building his own social network. i am normally quite dismissive about people who say they're going to build their own social network because it's extraordinarily expensive and difficult. but louis, this is a gentleman who built electric cars and one of the most valuable car companies in the world. this is a gentleman who's. busy an entirely new way of transporting things to space. so you know, with a social network within his reach. if he really put a mind to it, of course he could do that. i'm just not sure why he would, if he can't put the energy and the wherewithal and the creativity into acquiring twitter. you know, that would be a tiny fraction of the effort it would take to build his entire own social network . so i think it's a little bit twitter or bust for one month, at least as it relates to social networks. he's clearly going to be enormously consequential in some very important businesses. he may just decide he's got better things to do and other interests, and he may ultimately leave this alone or,
9:41 pm
or where he may not. i want to ask you about twitter itself because there are allegations that the suggestions that on that mosque is making that it has gone away from its basic principles of free speech and so on. nevertheless, do exist, which has had some very back to the city one way and another about the way that it has regulated or failed to regulate elements of, of a posts that have been going on. how much responsibility do you think which is going to have to wait up to in the light of days to look at the way that it's running it's operational? i think twitter is very much a way to do that. every social media company understands it has an incredible responsibility for content moderation. the great irony, i think, is that almost diametrically opposed to what you on musket saying and advocating the thing we need free speech. well, the, the consequence of free speech is child endangerment threats of violence and other really a horrible thing. so when most people say i really want the social platforms to do better, whether that be twitter or facebook or anybody else,
9:42 pm
most people are saying i want them to do a better job of content moderation. i want them to moderate more. but what is the most good thing is i want less, and that's a bit of a confusing position because ultimately, less content moderation will ultimately make twitter a, a very much less desirable place. i think it will hurt its usage numbers and ultimately make it not very successful. it'll open up to more criticism. jim, it's really good to get your thoughts on this tremendous and we appreciate it. as always. thank you very much for your time. some houses isn't to convert some apartments into qualities centers as infuriated tellers who've been evicted with the logs in china's largest city goes on president eugene peng as ordered every one to stick to the 0 covered 19 policy to the you. reports from beijing, police in protective gear struggle to control an angry crowd. these shanghai

disruptions in shanghai or contributing to global inflation. this is going to have a major impact on china. even though the focus is on the shanghai, we absolutely see varying levels of movement restrictions pretty much throughout the entire country. at this point, i believe there's only about 10 to 20 percent of the country that does not have some level of movement restrictions imposed on them. so this is basically bringing the entire chinese economy to, to a very grinding, almost crawl, be very arguable that a lot of the depletion we're seeing now was due to some of the slow downs in global trade that we saw, which then piled up boats outside of los angeles, outside of rotterdam, places like that. so this is going to be, even if it's now it's back to normal, very quickly. it's going to be 3 to 6 months to unwind. basically the backups that has been created and really get good swelling back to the normal level. and so this

really has a very ripple effect and we've seen with primarily inflation, which is probably more, at least in large part driven by supply chain disruption. i think all evidence indicates that they are absolutely determined to stick to this plan of action. you know, if we were to see potential peaks in that they might be changing. the 1st place that i would look is that they would be allowing different vaccines in because we know that the see novak relatively low african sea and we'll see no movement there either. so not only are the prohibition movement and locked downs continuing quite strongly. so are the unwavering stance on vaccine. most corona virus related restrictions in south korea are ending just a month ago. more than 600000 new infections will bring reported every day phones larry reports from the capital. so cherry blossom season has arrived. and so have
