what is happening? is there any anything that i'll just as an organization can do with regards to representations to the israeli military, israeli government, or indeed to the palestinian authority in the, in the event of something like this? yes, we, we, we will make the necessary communications and with, with all those that we can to try and find out what has happened. i'm sure there will be lots of calls from around the world. we get a lot of support from human rights organizations, governments who will be looking at what happened here, and why a journalist has been shot that journalists killing journalists shooting the messenger is equivalent to a war crime. so we need to know what has happened. the world needs to know what happened. i mean, clark, a veteran out there. a journalist has been killed by his ready forces in the
10:01 am
occupied westbank, serene, who actually was shot in the head well covering and israeli rate on the janine refugee camp. how does there? it says she was clearly wearing a press jacket. she was declared dead at a nearby hospital. serene was one of the one about deserves 1st field correspondence. you joined the channel back in 1997. blood 0 media network has put other statements, offering its condolences, which said in a blatant murder, violating international laws and norms. the israeli occupation forces assassinated in cold blood out 0 corresponding alger media network condemns this. his crime, which intends to prevent the media from conducting that duty, al jazeera holds the israeli government and the occupation forces responsible for the killing of the late colleague sharika. it also calls on the international community to condemn and hold the israeli occupation forces accountable. all right, let's join our correspondence, stephanie deca in western islam and steph devastating use of course
10:02 am
for everybody. the colleagues and you indeed worked with assuring. tell us more about what we know the circumstances so far. yes. so happened a couple of hours ago in the early hours in the jenin refugee camp in the occupied west bank. the team had been overnighting there. she was shot in the facial area, gruesome videos that were certainly not going to show another colleague of hers from another channel policy and colleague shot in the back there wearing press, best marked press um, the israeli army, excuse me. i issued a statement saying that it was investigating reports that it may have been palestinian gunmen that fired at the journalists. of course, the colleagues on the ground saying that this is very unlikely,
10:03 am
but the details of exactly how and what happened. we're still going to, you know, have to wait and see. certainly, you know, the feeling is that they were shot by israeli forces jeanine refugee campuses, multiple raids, less intensive. i have to say over the last couple of days. nothing major happening this morning in terms of raising comparison to what we've seen in the last month or so. but it's a, it's an area that has also a lot of armed palestinian gunman to these really are me saying that this was in the middle of that certainly we've also heard from al jazeera spirit if you're one of the low medi is saying that there wasn't a confrontation at the time. so this is what we know at the moment. she was taken to hospital pronounced dead. and we've seen picture recently also had body being carried through the streets of janine her press, best laid on her body. we understand her funeral will probably take place for
10:04 am
tomorrow, but you know, this is what we know. what we also know is that, you know, they are an extremely experienced team. they know janine very well. they've been covering it not any for years. and you said she started in the ninety's, but you know, a, it's an area they know how to operate it and how they know how to operate with relative safety. i mean, of course, we all take measured risks, particularly when it comes to these raids in an area like the genie refugee camp because it is unusual in terms of, you know, not many, many palestinians have weapons. but in these kinds of confrontations, they know how to operate and, and it was in the early morning or so it's just very much baffling. still, i think for everyone here, i incredulous just simply cannot believe that this has happened a what is your impression stuff as far as the work of palestinian journalists in the region in the how differently or the was the treated by the security forces.
10:05 am
well, i think it safe to say that there is no immunity if you will, as a palestinian journalist. you know, most, most fantasy and journalists who cover these stories day in day out will where press best will where helmet. clearly mark press. a lot of these journalists are well known in to, to these really forces, particularly when it's in an area where they operate a lot. there is a knowledge and also there was clearly marked and usually staying in the same area altogether, covering, you know, the stories. so it's incredibly difficult because 8 is no accountability b, they get actively targeted and you know, the seat at 1st hand, whether it's, you know, with tear gas or stung grenades or skunk water, which is an extremely foul smelling water that, that stays on you. oh, for days it's very difficult to get on all these different methods. so there is no, there is no way to be able to cover something here. go ok. you know,
10:06 am
we've got press and we're safe in particular palestinian jones you heard there from, from the da also you know, how difficult it is to operate and to document. it's up all the time, but definitely it is, you know, and things like this happened. there is also the, it's not even the expectation, it's the knowledge that there will be no accountability, i think, because this is so high profile, because shooting is, you know, very well known working for al jazeera working, which is a station you know, owned by caught cutter and israel, you know, have relations when it comes tools you know, dealing with hamas daily and gaza. this is very, this is a diplomatic incident at this point. um, so we will be hearing more information about what exactly happens, the catharsis will be expecting. ah, some kind of answer as we have heard, a very strong statement issued there by the government alls, of course, by, by al jazeera. and we've now also heard from these really foreign ministry saying
10:07 am
it's, it's, you know, offered a join pathing sql investigation and that it will be looked into. so alters will be demanded. i think, you know, when you're talking to me about this hierarchy, you're now also talking about a very prominent journalist of a major network owned by, you know, a country that it has relations with israel and somewhat extent in terms of how it manages situations here on the ground, particularly when it comes to hamas and gaza. but you also have this sometimes happening to journalist who have very little support, who might be freelancers who might be working for small policy and publication, where you will not be having this outcry where you and i will not be talking about it lie for hours on end because they're not supported by such a major channel and a powerful country that has diplomatic you know, consequences. so i think this is also important to highlight, you know, other palestinian journalists with less of that kind of backing face this all the time. and they've been killed 2 in the past and they've been maimed. 2 in the
10:08 am
pastor, they've been killed in gaza during border protest by sniper fire and ange. at some point they become part of the narrative of simply and number. i know it's this high profile. i, i, as we are discussing now, so this is the reality and i think, you know, it is important to highlight a to highlight that. and they will tell you that it's, it's, it's not changing and it's not going to change. and there is no accountability when these things kinds of happen. this situation because it is so much more high profile, i may have more investigation if you will, then when it hasn't happened in the past to palestinian journalists working for a local paper or a local channel, or steph leave there for the moment. so thanks very much indeed and stuff that are reporting that well another journalist was injured at the scene but is in a stable condition and he was asked about what took place while in hospital. or am i gonna, we were going to filmed is really army operation. and suddenly they shot us without
10:09 am
asking us to leave or stop filming 1st bullet hit me. and the 2nd bullet had sharin . they killed her in cold blood because they are killers and specialize in killing only palestinian people. so they claim that some palestinian militants were there, we had no resistance and there was no palestinian military resistance at all at the same. alright, let says be trinity abraham who's like 1st in ramallah in the occupied west bank speaking from the bureau, needed a shriek was an experience veteran journalist. she was a colleague of yours. she was very well respected. she was a friend. you all, it must be devastating for the whole team. were still unsure. we haven't to absorb the last. yes. we keep telling our is a real to do to lose her. she's not going to come back. keep looking at pictures to getting phone calls from people whom she reported on their story, presented their wives, their families. she's been known to focus on the human side of the story,
10:10 am
to spend time with people to understand what has happened to them. to be able to report on their story. so we're getting all these phone calls that's a probably leaving us to believe or a really the last there is a lot of sadness here, a lot. make feelings and good shaw sadness. the prize. i asked one of her producers and friends with them. i said, how do you feel? he goes, i'm not, i don't feel so it's hard to put those feelings in words because just happened still processing. but one thing we know for sure that sharing with the one to carry on our jobs report from the store to keep on going. even if it's very difficult, please been here as you're receiving more and more journalists,
10:11 am
they're coming to pay their condolences, the shocked, but many of them nor her personally know how professional she was, how modest she was. just people started pouring in to the bureau and we've been seeing them looking at pictures of her last moments when the gunshots continued, even though she has been injured and the palestinians were trying to take her journalists were trying to pull her from the scene. we don't know if she had been carried to the hospital earlier that we wouldn't have lost her. it was a severe injury, but there are so many questions and i'm standing here in her office. this is where she is to sit and work. she is an experienced journalist who not only was
10:12 am
a teacher to students in the desert university, but she also a, was a student as when she had recently got a diploma, a from beardsley university in new media. she was also when we were in genie in the past few weeks, she was showing us how she was learning hebrew. she wanted to know more about what is really media as been saying. so she is someone who is as much as professional. she is seasoned with experience, but she was still eager to learn more to know more and to tell the world the story. need a we heard couple of minutes ago from allowed to moody, who was another journalist who was injured at the scene. he was telling us about the circumstances of what happened as far as he could recall it. what more have you managed to glean 1st of all about what the team were doing and then what happened
10:13 am
at the time? the same has been sleeping in jeanine as for the continuous coverage to the israeli rays that have been intensifying over the past few weeks. it also hurt. there's really our mistake that they're going to carry out a campaign there. so people were already so sorry, the team was already seated, heating up for the coverage and according to one of our colleagues or produce at ragna sheet. so the last email that shooting sent was at 6 am in the morning 615 to be exact. she sent an email to the team here and on the line and her saying there was an israeli re to janine. i'm going to go and cover. this is the last to heard from her. so it's hard for us to know what happened the circumstances. as you mentioned that i was there with them, he probably was a better position to advise what has been happening. but the feeling amongst the
10:14 am
journalists here as she was targeted journalists are targeted for telling the truth . and this not this, this is not the 1st time when palestinians journalist gets shot by there's really forces. so there's a feeling here that because these journalists are telling the truth or conveying the story. this is the tragic ending that could be waiting for them. did targeted for telling the truth. neither will leave it for the moment. thank you . well, let's take that point on the media organization. reporters without borders says that palestinian journalists experience major difficulties doing their jobs. well. israeli media enjoy real freedoms. it says there have been several such as of violence against punitive jonathan. yes. and includes israel's military offensive in the gaza strip and may last year. others have been targeted during tensions
10:15 am
linked to the month of ramadan. and the most comp, the organizations is at least a $140.00 for palestinian journalists, have been at the receiving end of live rounds rubber bullets done. grenades will take us 5 by israeli soldiers or police that's during the past 4 years of the protest known as the great march of return in the gaza strip, the occupied west bank and east jerusalem. so let's explore this further. we can speak to emma shaqia, who is israel and palestine director of human rights. what she's in jordan's capital of a man with the shockey festival. what's your reaction to this latest news? absolutely. her. horrified to hear this, this the news this morning. my condolences go out to al jazeera, it's reporters, shitty ins, family and friends, and colleagues. and it's, it's the last thing any of us want to hear when a journalist is killed doing their job. and i've been, i think, as you just heard from nida, she was trying to tell the story of what's taking place. and i think what's taking
10:16 am
place in janine right now is exactly why we need journalists like sharon so badly. there have been uptake in killings of palestinians of violence across israel, palestine in recent weeks. that story whenever there are reports of killing so often isn't told. and sharyn woke up in the early morning to go tell that story and was killed while doing that. and i think it's absolutely horrific. it's of course not a one off event. you know, we know that israeli forces systematically have used excessive force. you just mentioned that the gaza march of return. and i think that's a great place to start. the un commission of inquiry investigated those events and documented the israeli forces shots at journalist knowing who they were. so this is an event that needs to be understood in the context of this systematic practice. and the killings of many other palestinian journalists are human rights watch is
10:17 am
still investigating the specifics of what took place. you've heard the eye, witness testimonies of other palestinians who have been there, who talked about being in close proximity to israeli. of forces there being no palestinian resistance in the area. but i think it's important to understand this in the context of the systematic practice of excessive force by israeli forces. so now investigations should and will be carried out to a greater or lesser extent. how confident are you about that process? israeli investigations are white white, white wash mechanism. that is the assessment has been reached by human rights organizations including israel's premier human rights organization. but selim human rights watch has a similar diagnosis. israeli forces regularly when news, you know, of their crimes are reported say they'll investigate. those are routinely leading
10:18 am
to a white washing mechanism. no accountability. these kinds of killings, highlights the necessity of the international criminal court moving forward, you know, with it's a formal prob, into a serious crimes committed in palestine. because the reality is there is no accountability for these sorts of abuses when it comes to actions by the israeli authorities. and what more can you tell us about the record of, of treatments of palestinian journalist by israel security forces? look, i mean we, we have a long record that states back decades of palestinians journalists being detained, arrested for their, for their reporting, human rights, watches, documented on these incidents. and of course, is really forces regularly use excessive force and, and other means that, that go far beyond the international law authorizes in the way, polices demonstrations in the surrounding areas. and we've seen journalist shot at
10:19 am
killed, including, you know, ya see, for example, yasser, what says gen garza during the gaza march of return. and as noted, d, u and investigated those events. the commission of inquiry for him to look into these events and made a clear point of noting that their conclusion was that israeli forces fired at those journalists, knowing full well who they are. what measures would you say can be taken if any, to protect german is better, particularly in this region? look, i think it's important that states, you know, put pressure on this is really government. the reality here is that this is happening against the backdrop of systematic violence against palestinians, the killing of, you know, journalists, the arrests of journalists comes place because there's a lot, obviously, a larger practices taking place against the context of the israeli governments. crimes against humanity of apartheid, of persecution against palestinians. a journalist for the, for the, for international journalist. you know, of course, for the most part she can enter
10:20 am
a report across israel, palestine can do so with a degree of freedom. you know, that, that, that's different than other areas of policy and journalists based the very different, you know, reality and, and those like sure that we're on the absolute front lines. bravely reporting at the early hours of the morning. i mean, those are exactly the kinds of journalists that you know, are more most at risk. so i think states need to understand this against the larger practice. a lot of the statements we're seeing pouring out in recent minutes. you know, our, our calling for an investigation knowing full well that won't take place at the hands of an israeli whitewash mechanism. what's necessary, of course, now is not only accountability, so support for mechanisms like, you know, the crew, national criminal court for the you on commission of inquiry, but also steps taken up by a states to end all forms of complicity in the serious crimes committed by israeli
10:21 am
authorities ok, we'll leave that for the moment. a appreciate your perspective on this. i'm a shaqia israel and palestine director of human rights, which thanks talking to was her. well, let's be not a journalist nora who joined us on the phone. she knew and worked with sharina at tennis, know what's going through your mind right now. well, i me to start by offering my condolences to the entire, under the family should was distinguished journalist and find and call me to everybody. and everybody in palestine who's worked with her other been touched by her humanity and integrity i've known should be in for over 20 years. i was proud to work alongside her of the colleague when i was reporting for under the english and she was a standard setting journalist in her integrity in her professionalism in her
10:22 am
relation, hello, colleague. the kind of guidance she was always willing to give to up and coming journalists to students of journalism in her amicable relations with everybody from all walks of life with all sorts of politicians and figures. she was an independent journalist. she knew that she was always the side of the story. actually, her job was to be the voice of the people and to tell the truth about any exaggeration without any embellishment. and she was an icon and a distinguished fellow journalist of a prominent journalist in the region. how well known was she would you say, and what might, what reaction might that be from the,
10:23 am
from the wider region. once this news spread, should him as a household name and that last time i can tell you without hesitation. but there isn't a house in palestine and beyond that is not morning or last. that does not remember that there's not remember the many, many stories that she covered, the many truth uncovered. and so her, the news of her, of her killing was like a thunderbolt to all of us who woke up to do to this, clear the sight of dozens and dozens of ordinary people. and journalists to came from everywhere around janine to her farewell and more in her as she deserves to be more and is just an indication of the kind of person that she. 5 and the kind of journalist she was she,
10:24 am
she touched the lives of many, many palestinians. she covered the most important stories in palestine for over 24 years. so there isn't, there isn't a family or household you have. it does not know her or has a story to remember her by not just as a professional, but also a beautiful person, often palestinian desa gloss over by the israeli government. given sharina prominence. do you think it might be different in this case? i can't, i cannot be but with the mystic towards to be honest, we've lost many colleagues over the years. some of them documented their own best. i can remember a young man who worked for reuters in 2008, so not who literally film israeli tag firing tank. so while
10:25 am
it's clearly marked in the car, which he was standing next to was clearly marked as a car belonging to the voters. news agency, none of these journalist that we've lost none of these trends we've lost over the years. haven't. we haven't been able to see justice for any of we heard from just a little while ago, telling you about the journalist who died in the great march of return and gone over over the past few years. they have not received justice, either the targeting of journalist and palestine. it's just the magic and it's constant. and that's why journalist and palestine are like a family, they know, but they must together, that their life is in danger. that being journalists does not shield them from danger and expose them to additional dangers. and that's why they move together. and that's why the video showing the last moments of life document clearly that she
10:26 am
was wearing her best. she was clearly identifiable along with other journalists and that she was target along with it was, was those who survived. it wasn't by chance. it wasn't, she wasn't taking a risk. she wasn't being a responsible. all of us who knew should be know that she is very responsible. she extremely careful. she's a crow, she's a veteran. she knows the ground. she's covered the story for many years. she knows how to move and how to conduct your. 5 and to protect her teams who are like family to her. so the fact that she was targeted this way that even the ambulance wasn't able to to, to get to her. it is a reminder to all of us. you've been doing this for many years that unfortunately
10:27 am
this is not an exception. indeed. what do you think this will do to the resolve of palestinian journalists covering the occupation? well it will only, it can only thank for the result. i think everybody whether they are recording on the ground or they dropped the mike as i did a while ago feel, but we only shifting and other colleagues to continue telling the story. this is a debt that we will carry. journalists will continue to tell the story in palestine despite the dangers, despite the heartbreak in them. pick up their mike and report on the death of the colleague report the i would miss the couch that refute the israeli. a story that wants to absorb. these really forces of responsibility for
10:28 am
this killing like it tried with many other colleagues. so the we work continue. story will continue to be told by those who will cherish the memory of shooting and who will always hold her memory dear and considerate that inspiration to continue telling the story. live integrity, continue telling the fearlessly and tirelessly until justice is served for her and for the other. know thanks for talking to us on this day at nor a day who knew and worked with st while a veteran or a journalist just to recap, who's been killed by israeli forces in the occupied west bank. here's what we know . so far, sharina was reporting on israeli rates in janine in the occupied westbank be near daily res after a series of deadly attacks inside israel. she was shot in the face despite wearing
10:29 am
her press 1st and was declared dead in hospital crowds who carried her body from the hospital through the streets. janine, in a procession to all the details about her funeral at this moment. not yet clear. let's speak now to friday, could on who's in activist the campaign group of oz. he joins us from ramallah, skype, the festival friday. what's your reaction to this news? the call reaction for me and for the whole call us the nation as heartbreak and grief. she was a hero and the role model for multiple generations of palestinians and how see challenges fear and spoke up for the truth. and to be completely frank, i've spoken to many, many people today who have been in tears since hearing the news. tell us little more about the backdrop to this because this event is happened at a time of increase tensions in the area. yes,
10:30 am
well it's important to note here that as human rights watch an amnesty and is really am palestinian experts have highlighted israel's practicing a crime against humanity of a part side. and this has been consistent for decades, and it's important to understand that context because currently what has been happening, particularly over the last months since the beginning of ramadan, a escalated it's attacks on palestinian communities. it has decided to expand something and simply transfer a hundreds of families from their homes and so and palestinian society has saw with the minimal resources to resist. but this morning will just another day and a series of israeli incursions into palestinian towns to demolish homes to arrest.
