jazeera. a correspondent chaper tansy has morn out from washington, d. c. he went for a specific scape, crated, and he talked about the gun lobby. we have to have the backbone to, to confront the gun lobby. and it is true, the national rifle association does have a huge amount of influence in us politics because it has such a activist base who will always go to local elections and vote. but also because they have loads of money, even in their bankrupted states, even in their fractured, bankrupted state, which they will use against anyone in, in local races, in congressional races to attack you that us every support candidates fail, attack you. if, if, if they don't agree with you, actually, again, it's a tactic the now a packing is ready, lobbyist, stuff that has started using and actually i just, it was interesting going on from that and the specificity, i just heard of a senior democrats to say, well, perhaps we can put this on the ballot in november because that's consensus.
6:06 am
nothing's gonna happen in washington, another gun control until the mid terms, at least. so perhaps they got us. i'd say, well, that we'll treat this is a wedge issue. we know they're trying to do that with abortion already and trying to sort of get about that democratic base excise again when they're actually very enthusiastic about buying the house. and he hasn't followed through with his 1st election promises. so perhaps that some of them do that, but then you have to wonder immediately them is this being silicone, they really think change as possible because tonight at the democratic primaries to decide who will run in november. let's take a closer look now at school shootings in the us. more than 300000 students in america have been exposed to gun violence at school since the columbine high school shooting in 1901909 in the u. s. in this year. 2022 that have so far been 27 separate school shootings with dozens killed or injured to 2018. and with a 119 school shootings across the us. they include the shooting and parker and

florida with 17 was shot dead. joining us now from orlando in florida is maxwell frost. he's a candidate for us congress and a gun violence prevention activists. thanks very much for being with us festival. your response to this tragic event? well, it is. it is a hard day for folks in this country because time and time and again, our leaders, you know, it's like a cycle, but it happens all the time. the shootings happen, our leaders give us thoughts and prayers and then nothing happens in the way of action. i mean, i found out about this shooting while i was pulling up to a school board protests because our governors trying to ban books from our schools . when there's folks die. there's 100 people that die a day due to gun violence in this country. and people have had enough of the killing on the senseless violence. and another politician who give lip service when something's on the news, but don't say anything after my heart is with families and with the same with the

survivors. and we have to get something done. we have to get us present biden's saying it's time to turn this pain into action. do you feel that this is stronger restaurant than we've seen in the past? you think, excuse me, to think he might actually take some of that action now. that's the hope. and there are things that president i didn't could do tomorrow through executive action to help push the on look for. but it's not just on president vine and it's on him and also in the united states congress and also on every municipality in this country. and every county commission in this country and every state legislature, we need all hands on to figure out number one, what solutions make sense for communities, implement those solutions and ensure that we're getting to a place where we don't lose 100 people a day to, to come by and i believe that the public outcry has been continuing to increase ever since parkland ever since. just last week with buffalo and i believe we will
6:09 am
have to change it. we've heard that the gun that lobby, that the and all right, that it attacks candidates, congressional candidates who campaign against guns. you'll. so if you're running for congress on you, have you experience any of these attacks? i haven't, i'm running in a very blue area, orlando, florida. it's unlike a lot of other places in florida, but i have been subject to attack from folks from the n r a and even people from white supremacist groups. i mean, i remember just in 2019, when i worked for march for our lives myself and 12 other students went to the virginia capital to advocate for safety laws. and guess what? we were met with death threats from tons of folks who came to do arms protest, so we had to leave overnight in the capital. the day before i'm talking to 1816 year olds. we had asleep overnight in the capital, fearing for safety. this is the type of rhetoric that the right and the n r ray is pushing, and they bear some responsibility for
6:10 am
a lot of this violence as well. why do you think the n r a is so adamant on maintaining this u. s. right to own a gun, what is it about that that they can't let go of? well, i think a lot of that has to do with the culture and a lot of it has to do with the political power that we we know that the n r a is in the business of intimidating people and using fear mongering to push politicians to be, have a specific stance, and let's be clear to, there's no democrats in congress saying we need to go door to door and take everybody's gun. however, that generate tells its members, we believe we do believe that there is a 2nd. of course, people have the right to protect themselves, but what people don't have the right to do is walk into an elementary school and murder, children, and teachers. and so what we have to do is as not just democrats, but as people in this country is fight back against these lies and let people know that we have real tangible solutions. yes,
6:11 am
some of them have to do with the regulation of guns. yes. other ones have to do with getting money directly into what's called community violence intervention. so we can stop violence before it happens. yes, mental health is a piece of that too. we have to look at this problem holistically. we're going to end it because again, we lose a 100 lives a day. and i think a lot of times we're having these mass shootings, it's easy to just kind of think about these numbers and forget about the people behind every or there's a human being. and we have to make sure that no one forgets that. yeah, it's a shocking number of people at maxwell, frost. thank you very much. taking the time to join us here on out to 0. thank you for that's. that's another news now. and north korea is suspected of carrying out a long range intercontinental ballistic missile test. the 2nd time this yeah. japan and south korea detective 3 ballistic missiles bang, fired from soon on towards the sea of japan. 2 of them were thought to be short range. so has described the test as a great publication. and it comes

6:13 am
ballistic missile type being tested for the 1st time, fired from the water. so the north koreans are mastering the technique of launching this else in submarine. also at the end of march, there was an intercontinental ballistic missile, the kind of heavy, a missile capable of reaching the continental united states. and the kind of missile that hasn't been fired since 2017, with a warning from defense officials in japan and south korea. and also in the us that we can probably expect more testing of icbm in the future at the south koreans and the u. s. military have promised greater cooperation in response to all list is now a conservative administration in south korea, including of course, maybe more military exercises, joint exercises. but those are the kinds of things that often anger, north korea, prompting them to launch more. missiles still had her on algebra. 3 months after russia invaded ukraine, fighting rage is on the east, but morale is still high in the capital. and the pressure is back on morris johnson
