where the australia's reaction to the foreign ministers visit to the region, but 1st let's cross over to katrina you. she's like for us in beijing and really katrina that the 1st class really has to be is what's china hoping to achieve from what is really a mammoth diplomatic trip? well, china wants to deepen its relationships with each of these countries and essentially dramatically increase its influence in the region. now one gies trip comes just days after door bite and left the inner pacific. and had several meetings here. and baiting is really wanting to make a point that the u. s. has not been successful in containing china. and that's why one he has now started this merit on regional diplomatic towards going to take 10 days. his 1st thought today on thursday was in honey are the capital of the solomon islands. just a few weeks after signing this controversial security packed with the government there. and one you said today that the hon yara, as to, has gained

a sincere and reliable partner in china. since switching diplomatic ties from taiwan to beijing in 2019. and he hurts their burdening relationship can be a model for other pacific islands nations. now, after he leaves the solomon islands, he will continue to at least 7 other countries and conduct online sessions with 2 others. and according to a league document dating is hoping to extend that security packed with the solomon islands to those 9 other nations. and it seems that according to what aging wants, this sort of joint communicate is very wide, reaching now in return for millions of dollars of aid that will go towards infrastructure and development projects. this may grant aging access if they agree to it, to natural resources, information in dos and networks. and what's most concerning to other western countries, including australia is of potential expansion of china's military presence in the

region. how concerned is beijing then about the fact that australia on the u. s. as you said or not, are not happy about this. they are muddying the waters. they know there is discontent. as we know in the solomon islands a few months back, there was real anger about the way the islands changed their foreign policy towards taiwan. it's a real concern. and yang, why yee has to tread very lightly, but also very delicately when it comes to every word that he speaks on this trip because he knows he has it enough to tractors in that area to pounce on him. that's right. i think one year during this trip is going to be at haynes to reassure the leaders of this nation that these relationships that they're going to deepen. the china is bilateral relationships, will be based on mutual respect and non interference in domestic affairs. so china is saying this
1:06 pm
a does not come with any strings attached and also by aging has been repeating that these accusations that china hopes to militarize the region. they saying that these are groundless. and also we saw that china's foreign ministry engaging on thursday, went on to talk about the issues that baiting is willing to work with. the solomon islands, issues that miss other pacific island nation leaders are interested in. and they do really care about ser issues such as developing the agriculture sector, improving exports and trade for these industries, helping with health and epidemic prevention, climate change and disaster relief. china saying look, we know what you care about. we also care about these issues. and we're willing to help you now with them in a way that australia and other western countries may have neglected or may have dropped the ball in, in, in the past. will develop this more now with her, cedric log in brisbane. katrina, thank you. as sarah,
1:07 pm
welcome to program. as always, it's really interesting, isn't it? australia's keeping a very close eye on what's going on. and now they've sent him the big guns. they certainly have this is penny wrong. the newly elected foreign minister just food. i thought she was given the job, she suddenly ensued. 2 in fiji and that's been described as a deeper medic dash strongly does it be that if it's the partnership the established in world war 2 could be undermined by china's in question in the region . this new security pack side, the solomon islands, and china's attempts to have up to 10 out the nation in the pacific sign up to similar economic and security agreement. so business by penny wall strategies. foreign minister marks the start of a straight bill to read guided tradition in the pacific in the past, a straight as the former government has been accused of abandoning the pacific. this is certainly pretty long trying to reset the new time for that relationship with those countries. in her speech, she use extraordinary

activities looking at the pacific as if it is a abstract from australia. i'll look at this and think what is it we need to do to work together to ensure that regional security is fostered and supported by the region. you talk about sarah australia to, to reset the relationship, but all the smaller islands willing to reset the relationship when they seem to have a fair weather neighbor in australia that wants to deal with them when it suits them . all astronomy and the new government will be hoping that pacific is willing to come back on board. the last government under stop mars. and as i said was accused of banding or dropping the ball in the pacific. i should note that the u. s. has

also been accused of focusing more undermining china as opposed to delivering on what the pacific needs. so estrella is new foreign minister penny wong. she's made it clear that the pacific will be one of his top priorities after years of friction . now with scott morrison, she's prejudiced, ready to be a generous, respectable, and reliable partner pacific. but australia will be watching as a when he does is to a, to ramp up to 10 nations either virtually visiting these on nations in a pacific overcoming dice, severed lock in brisbin. thank you. now the shock, anger and grief in the town, it evolved a in texas after a teenage open fire and killed 19 children. and 2 teachers on tuesday, tribute saw being paid to the victims who were all in one classroom at a primary school. he was president joe biden has called on politicians to stand up to the powerful or firearms lobby. john hendern reports now from the val day

another school massacre in america and more flowers to more in the dead. just before an 18 year old texas gunman massacre 21 people at rob elementary school on tuesday, the governor says, well, he shot his own grandmother. anyone who shoots his grandmother in the face has to have an evil in his heart. but it is far more evil for someone to gun down little kids. but the republican governors news conference devolved into political theatre when his democratic rivals bet o'rourke interrupted to denounce decades of inaction in congress and in texas. you know, he talked about that this was evil. the only thing evil is what he continues to do to the people of the state. he says this was unpredictable. it was totally predictable. and i predict this will continue to happen. syria era's mindy, as

solution from here. dominic came forth and berlin without update. thanks dominic. now let's turn to our other top story and that's how china is looking to grow its influence in the pacific. let's bring in then why hardy chateau. he's an adjunct professor of international affairs at temple university in turkey, and he joins in our via skype from that, i could tell you what this on the program. so i mean china talks about investments in cooperation. the u. s. talks of influence and d stabilization. how do you see this visit putting out why it's an important benefit, especially given the context right over the last few years. there have been a lot of complaints within the region within the pacific island nation that western countries and especially australia, which traditionally has been the most present power in the region that they were basically neglecting the pacific island countries. now china seas this basically as an opportunity to increase its influence in the region. what is quite interesting
1:40 pm
about this visit in this deal is that what china is attempting to do in the region is quite ambitious. we're talking about cooperation on many, many fronts, including security. we're talking about maritime cooperation as of all cybersecurity. so it's definitely an attempt to really increase the cloud and domination of china. yet you know the words of wisdom dare i say it all worry all being voiced by those smaller nations. micronesia says the deal threatens regional stability and shows china's intent to control the region. is a solomon some element of truth in that? well, it's understandable why micronesia, which we need to specify is also an ally, the united states. they have some defense cooperation agreements and it's understandable that they would voice these kinds of concerns, especially because like i said, this treaty or not a treaty rather. but this communique, which china hopes all regional countries,
1:41 pm
will accept a span so many different sectors and so many different areas. another reason why there are concerns are not only micronesia, but potentially in other countries in the region is that these countries are obviously very small. their economies are limited in size in resources, which means that any deal with china would give, honestly apprehend on china their negotiating power. their leverage is quite limited. so these concerns are understandable and partially yet partially grounded on reality. and of course, a is thinking in the same vein, i mean, china's influence seems to be alarming residents of the solomon islands too. because especially last november, when the island sort of moved its allegiance away from taiwan to china, pleasing beijing, but angering many residents in the capitol lead to a lot of violence. so 11 does how find a line beijing have to walks was not to upset the this lodge grouping of islands and island us. right. this is

a great question and it really depends on how long, how really this is going to play out, and how much presence there is going to be from china in these islands. for example, in the solomon islands, last year, china was present and helping to quell some protest, some anti government protests. now if we see this kind of thing in other countries that may lead to indeed more resentment against china, there are, it's important to understand and in many of these countries, there is a certain degree of anti chinese sentiment. let's remember or specify very importantly that there are some countries in the region that are still allied to taiwan, which you just mentioned. there are 3 actually countries in the pacific they're allied with taiwan. so the certainly there is this rivalry element that is important. you're china wants to push away the remaining allies of tie one in the region and not all people in the pacific islands would be happy with such a development as soak about sort of the big place in the region. the nuts,
1:43 pm
australia, i mean that trying to re introduce themselves. we see the foreign minister arriving in fiji. you might say back to the party when they've been practically away from the politics of a south pacific for over a decade. are they too late to start exerting that influence? because these small island nations have basically said, you know, we can, we can get all without you without really need you any more. yeah, exactly, and that's a great point. i'm not sure if we can say that it's too late to the party because for australia, for new zealand as well. traditionally, they've been very good partners to these countries. so it's not like suddenly that kind of a good, well, that has been belt, is simply washed away. but it is true that there is a bit of catching up for australia among others, and even for the united states. because frankly, the united states is also neglected the region and we saw now over the last few months a kind of return of this. 3 interest, and now that china is attempting to increase its cloud, no doubt of this will increase of the same time, the interest from australia,
1:44 pm
from the u. s. in their partners. so what this is going to result in is simply greater geopolitical competition in a region that is why strategically located and that says that the, you know, it leads to some worries and there might be some instability inherent to this kind of a geopolitical rivalry that now has a new locale, and you, for i, in this region, i mean there might be some justification in the sort of the saber rattling of that we're hearing from certain countries. and if i just relate to care about a about signing a deal with china, potentially over fishing rights. if we look at the philippines, they themselves saw in a stand off with china in the south china sea, over fishing rights and over areas that china says, all that, as we've seen the chinese naval military clash with domestic filipino fishing boats . i mean, there is the precedent, is that not an example to the, the, these island states in the south pacific that this is what could happen if you give
1:45 pm
china access to your lucrative fishing areas. now exactly, and you put your finger on one of the main, one of the main concerns. one of the main areas of worry is if you look at what has transpired in the south china sea, not only with the philippines, which is one of the main claimants opposing china, but other countries as well in the region. there is a precedent. there is a recent history of china, preventing local fishermen from accessing their traditional fishing grounds, the resources that they've had access to for decades of not centuries. so certainly of this kind of deal goes through. and if china gains access to very lucrative fishing grounds around the tree bots, but other islands of the region as well, there is no, it's understandable why these kinds of outcomes could be in the workings. and that certainly, of course, worries a local population that worries all the governments which may have made face
1:46 pm
themselves with the same kind of controversies and very tense situation. frankly, that we have witness in the south china sea. we'll certainly keep an eye of what's going on in those press conferences as they occur for the moment. then we'll hardy shuttle from temple university. thanks for joining us from tokyo. thank you very much. reformist lebanon, 110 percent of the seats, and recent parliamentary elections. that's the 1st since the end of the civil war more than 3 decades ago. but the victory doesn't seem to be the clean break from traditional politics, many of hopeful and then now discussing an alliance, then how to report stuff a route. the walls are coming down 2 years on lebanon's political establishment has begun to remove barriers that stood between anti corruption protestors and state institutions through the ballot box and against the odds. those who were demanding political change made their way to parliament, winning 10 percent of the seats in the recent election. it's

a small crack in the political classes, hold on power, who often used violence to silence opposition. for the longest time, politics in lebanon has been about dividing the shares, and compromising between the different parties in order for each one of them to have its own chair, after certain bargaining. this is not a democrat take process. there when is the 1st and post civil war politics, which has been dominated by mainly sectarian leaders, many of them, former militia leaders. but so far what they have in common is their opposition to the system. they know they'll need to speak in one voice, forming a blog at this point for a form of the video function for us to be able to confront the current establishment party. we know that they are very powerful. we know how much they have leverage over. those parties also have support to who have shown willingness to use violence,

even destroying opposition. symbols such as setting fire to the iron fist in the epicenter of the protest movement that came to represent the peoples resistance and determination. gone are the crowds, their voices are now inside parliament, but the traditional parties still retained the majority of seats. they are the dominant force. it's still a resilient regime, and opponents remain fragmented. to be genuinely king maker. they will have to form a united, coherent to block. they will have to form alliances with. other groups might not have the influence that they think as they will have, as they will certainly offer dissenting opinions. they will raise their voices, they will criticize certain policies, but when it comes to passing new legislation, they will face a stumbling block. no doubt, there is a new beginning,
1:49 pm
but not all is well in lebanon. were political dynamics after the election may not be much different than before. then there has ita balte. boss johnson has again insisted he will remain as britons prime minister, despite the latest party gate revelations, report into the scandal has caused a new outcry of legal parties at his home. they happened to be prime minister told everyone else to obey lockdown restrictions to combat corona virus. charlie angela has moved from london. another conservative am he, john barron has withdrawn his support for the prime minister saying he can no longer support him because he believes he has knowingly misled parliament. but a look at the morning paper shows the nation really divided over this issue and quite weary of this episode. the headlines range from laughing at all of us to we got away with it, which is referring to a text that was sent by boris johnson's private secretary, after one of those events to in the more conservative supporting newspapers. what's

all the fuss about and is this it, it's referring to photograph, of course, johnson standing behind his desk holding a can of coke at what was his birthday party. in june 2020. and on wednesday in parliament we did hear a more contrite prime minister. what m p say was a more genuine and apology with a much more humble tone. and that is crucial because the next 40 hours with his m. p. 's are vital devoris johnson. they are going to be going back to the constituencies over this jubilee began speaking to the residence and trying to gauge how serious this still is for the people. have they had enough of this? do they want to move on? do they think his apology was enough? or are they still livid and do they want him gone? now luckily for boys johnson, there is another crisis that is looming. that is the cost of living. it is much more at the forefront of people's minds right now. and in few hours, we're going to be hearing from chant, sir richie sooner, who's going to be unveiling some measures on how to ease that squeeze on personal
