9:07 pm
western diplomats are worried that the global coalition of countries that originally condemned russia's aggression will fragment. and we're definitely seeing arab countries and african countries tending to step back and avoid condemning russia now because they are very concerned about what the conflict means for that. recall to me, that's also a lot of concern that western aid is going to dry up because a money is being diverted to ukraine. and in some countries, these economic factors could actually lead to social unrest. now, russia's blamed sanctions for the price increases. the west points out that there are no sanctions on food or fertilizer. food shortages, party coals by the ukraine was one of the biggest challenges facing somalia that an old grated new president has some shake. mahmud international leaders gathered for the ceremony, including the kenyan presidents and prime minister, lord secured

a landslide victory against the incumbent, bahamas of delay for mad year last month. he'll have to deal with security threats, rising inflation, severe drought, and conflict. malcolm web has more from nairobi. the ceremony took place in an aircraft hangar inside morbid issue green zone, which is one of the few parts of the country that fully under the control of the somali federal government and the foreign forces that it depends on. it did not same room that just a few weeks ago and shake one that election, but it's just members of parliament who got to vote the general public didn't get to vote in political process by which tamale's leaders selected. now of note that this ceremony for the integration with kenyan president who kenyata this follows a couple of years of fairly sour relation between kenya on somalia. on the on shake, treat assessor former president mohammed of the law. he saw my relations became
9:09 pm
quite tense, around a maritime borders. it's the oil beneath the sea, but people in both country, the, it's up trade deteriorated, security cooperation. deteriorated the president who kenyatta was that today and talked about resuming trade, resuming flights and so on. so it looks like there's a turing of relations on the card there. so donnelly is a smiley analyst who attended the swearing in ceremony in mogadishu. she explains why people are hopeful about the new leadership as it has been chaplain and has already begun to implement his campaign promise, which is ready to bring some money together and the world his campaign and of itself in the world really has essential for him within the 1st few weeks of his when the actually is really big off the country to
9:10 pm
reconcile the political leadership that has been factored over the past several years. and also this extends to somebody as friends and allies to the table again today, ceremony witness really high level delegation across the region, but also from the ad world. so really, you know, some idea is, is getting back on track and that president has, who has begun really putting what he said into practice and whatnot is a very helpful. we're hoping that the president really not only focuses on the politics but does what, you know, each family household needs, which is obviously, you know, creating an environment that's conducive to competing in the, in the, in the global world. he has a couple of initiatives around economic recovery employment in youth initiatives. so it's early, but we do see a president who is action oriented already. well,
9:11 pm
plenty more ahead here. all the al jazeera news are including a warning of dangerous conditions facing thousands of migrants and asylum seekers on the move in search of a better life in the us. also, palestine is foreign minister. take sharon, our atlas case to the hague and in sport to boston, restore their lead, and the n b, a finals of the warriors worry about their biggest star. ah, not yours, president joe biden has called on latin american leaders to help make supply chains more secure and resilient. he made the comments at the opening of the 9th summit of the americas taking place in los angeles. but the u. s. is exclusion of cuba, venezuela and nicaragua, over rights violations is overshadowed the talks, mexico's president and a number of other leaders are boycotting the 5 day meeting in protest. let's get
9:12 pm
more on this from rob reynolds who joins us live now from los angeles. so what is being said, or will be said so far? well, so hail the heads of delegations are arriving here for this 2nd day of the los angeles summit. and on this day, a president joe biden is devoting at least some of his attention to issues of green energy and climate change. the administration is unveiling to program that a one of them a has to do with greater cooperation and funding for caribbean nations to strengthen their threatened infrastructure in the face of rising sea levels and ever more destructive and powerful storms and hurricanes. the other initiative being signed on today by several major countries in the region, including argentina and brazil would set goals for increasing clean energy generation throughout the the, the hemisphere as
9:13 pm
a way of combating global warming. president, also, as you mentioned, has been talking about some geographical re shifting of the fragile supply chain. we've all seen those pictures of ships waiting outside ports at the at c jammed ports, including the one here in los angeles, one of the biggest in north america. and this is an idea that many economists believe it's time has come. carter, this week's summit of the americas takes place amid continuing global supply chain problems, which president joe biden will address at. the port of los angeles on friday is, is really a spectacular golden opportunity. economic policy analysts say the solution to those problems lies in a concerted effort to shift manufacturing and shipping away from asia to neighbors of the us, the so called friends shoring, of supply chains. we could be talking about several millions of jobs that could
9:14 pm
move into those countries, linked to supply chains, and that would be transformative in those economies. but on linking the existing supply chain would not be easy. will require both the hard infrastructure and soft infrastructure. and what do i mean by soft infrastructure? governments, the policy, the trade policies? what, how do align to adopt the new ways of looking at things that relations between the u. s. and countries like mexico, who's president has decided not to attend the summit or tense, even if the political good will for more trade integration could be found. the job of building a vast industrial infrastructure and port facilities would take many years and hundreds of billions of dollars. but if friend shoring were realized, it would have benefits far beyond improving the fragile supply chain. it could reduce poverty and migration, curtail criminal gangs and narcotics trafficking,
9:15 pm
re good jobs, good labor conditions, environmental security. and that means your employ workers who would then be much less inclined to decide they have to get out and migrate united states or join a local drug trafficking. get the time experts say is now. companies are already talking by doing it right. there is a serious conversation in the boardroom. how do we diversified or supply, and how do we make it shorter? so they're much more effective in terms of the cost, resiliency and sustainability. and america has a great opportunity to take advantage of this momentum. because if we don't do it now, one really reconfiguring supply change could be a potential win win for the u. s. and it's neighbors, but would require political will and a level of trust that at the moment doesn't seem to exist.
9:16 pm
and now, so hill, as you mentioned, a few moments ago the, the summit here in los angeles has been overshadowed in part by this boycott by mexican president lopez or border and several other regional leaders. and there's been some speculation as to whether this is an embarrassment or even a political politically damaging situation for president by now, just like to offer, i think the following points. one, very few people in the united states or even in los angeles, know that this summit is actually happening. it's received very little coverage to very few people in the united states. know who the president of mexico is and probably even fewer care about where he goes, or whether he's coming to los angeles this week. what they do care about is the price of gasoline and the shortage of baby formula. and finally, president biden would have faced much more domestic political fallout from the right from the republican party had he invited nicholas maduro, for example,
9:17 pm
or danielle ortega to the united states, been photographed shaking hands with these 2 ha leaders who are generally reviled throughout the region. by many of the other leaders, and so that would have been even more political consequences for biden than the status quo right now. so that's those are my thoughts. so hale will continue to monitor what goes on there in los angeles with you rob as the day progresses. thank you. alice cross over to our latin america editor lucio newman joins us now from chenise capital. santiago you had robbed that talking about whether anybody in the us ready cag, they didn't know whether this an event was actually happening. how much to people in chile, or the politicians of chile care about the summit of the americas considering there is this ongoing boy cult as well. i would say that not only in chile, but in argentina and brazil all over latin america, that there is certainly a of interest in the summit. and it also
9:18 pm
a lot of focus on why it is being regarded widely as a fiasco by most of the people in this region. because clearly, it is the only venue where all of the leaders of the americas, including the united states and canada. and up until recently, cuba is willa, and also nicaragua could all sit together at the same table and discuss their common challenges. and the, the things that they want to do together ways of cooperating. so the fact that it hasn't turned out that way now is a big disappointment, but it doesn't mean that there is no interest in it. and i would also say that i'm not completely in agreement with rob, about whether it would have been more of a fiasco to have invited nicholas my ludo or the cuban in nicaragua, leaders because one could argue or certainly the white house might have argued that it was not up to the white house to decide who could and could not come to a summit that is supposed to include absolutely every single country of the
9:19 pm
americas. but it would have been an opportunity, perhaps for him not to have shaken hands with my buddha, but rather to have sat at the same table with these 3 leaders. and have taken them to task to have tried to make them accountable for the criticisms that not only the united states, but many other countries in the region have against those governments alysia. that's why we were a channel of different perspectives. we like that perspective from north and south america. thanks very much for from santiago was me to say thank you. now away from the summit, thousands of refugees migrants heading north through mexico towards the united states in search of better lies, but none will repel reports crowding an extreme heater creating dangerous conditions. he repulsed from chapels huh apology museum in southern mexico has been temporarily transformed to house thousands of migrants and asylum seekers. it's crowded and many people here are starting to get sick in

that medics from a humanitarian group. see they're treating hundreds of people every day. but they can't tend to everyone. ne, in that case, it's not enough. the flow of migrants is constant and it's big. we always need more support, more hands, more resources, conditions at the camp are also unsanitary. the risk is especially high for children. observers from unicef. see the situation here is extremely precarious. embed i game with us, but it's not happening. you can see there are money people here, money, boys and girls are sick. they have fevers, their bodies covered with insect bites, and the heat is affecting small babies in particular. migrants rights advocates organized this caravans to coincide with the summit of the americas taking place this week in los angeles. hoping to call attention to the plight of thousands of
9:21 pm
migrants who have been stuck in southern mexico for months. while most people here seem unaware of the political motivations of the caravans organizers, many or hope for the u. s. government will open its doors when the eventually arrived at the us border. hello, fame, dental hygiene. we're asking them to help us to be allowed to pass without so many obstacles without having to spend so many days sleeping on the floor. we would do anything for them to help us. there is rain on the horizon. adding to the worries that more people at the camp could also become ill. the day is coming to an end here in southern mexico and migrants are starting to look for space among the crowd to get some rest. but there are simply too many people here and not enough room to accommodate them all. it looks like many others will be forced to spend another night without a roof over their heads. though hundreds of migrants have broken away from the caravan and continued north on their own,
9:22 pm
it could be several weeks before this group reaches the us border. organizers had asked them not to grow desperate and leave on their own, adding that there are worse dangers in mexico than getting sick. as cross over to him, i will repel her who's in whistler in the state of chap. her son, of course, before we talk about where you are right now. and well, let's just talk about the migrant train that we've been talking about last 2 days, mainly consisting of venezuelans. where are they right now? hello. so hell over the course of the last few days, starting on monday, we've been following the steps of a migrant caravan that set out from the city of south at shula in southern mexico, right on the border with guatemala. the caravan, as we've been covering it over the past few days, we should note, has, for the most part, disbanded where we are, our immigration offices in the city of weeks here in southern mexico. many of the migrants that we've been following,
9:23 pm
spent the night outside of these offices in the pouring rain rain all through the night, hoping to get their hands on transit. these is, these are humanitarian visas that the mexican government promised to issue members of this migrant care of and that allow members of the care event to move about freely within mexico and for the vast majority of them allow them to continue their journey north toward the u. s. southern border. many of them we should also note had already grown desperate on, on tuesday and wednesday and had already moved. they'd already told us that they were going to continue to move north with or without their transit pieces. they've grown tired of having to wait for the rest of the group with these caravans. they can really only move as fast as the slowest members of the group. and there are many, many families with children. there are pregnant women that simply can't move as fast as some of the migrant said or in better shape. as you mentioned already, the vast majority of them are from venezuela. but we've also encountered people from all across the latin american continent and this migrant care event that's set
9:24 pm
out from tampa to la on monday. the organizers timed that caravan to coincide with the start of the summit of the americas taking place in the city of los angeles. but i would say that at that nobody that we've spoken to actual members of the care of and were even aware of the summit that was taking place or knew what was being discussed by world leaders at the summit. their hopes, if anything, or that the media attention on the micro caravan would somehow not only shine a light on the larger migrant crisis playing out in latin america. but, but highlight the plight of the migrants of this caravan in hopes that maybe us officials would see the reports that open their doors when they eventually arrive on the us southern border to hell for several years. we've continued to follow and report on the issue of migrant coming from central and latin america moving north towards the us. wow. but what one does, you know, how do these migrants get to know that there is
9:25 pm
a larger caravan on its way up north? how does this sort of news filter through? how do they actually gather together in these small places which end up becoming a large stream of humanity heading towards the us border? that, that, that you make a very good point here is a hell, because if for our viewers who have been following the news of these caravans over the past few years, we've been covering caravans of central american migrants. you'll see caravans of thousands of people from honduras, from solver, from guatemala. last year we followed caravans, of migrants from haiti, also numbering in the thousands. what makes this one slightly different is how homogenous it is. the vast majority of them are from venezuela. the reason we keep seeing these large groups of, of, of migrant sort of taking part in these caravans has, it is really for 2 reasons. the 1st is the sense that their safety in numbers, if they're together, if they stay together in these large groups, there's less of
9:26 pm
a chance that sort of going to be detained by immigration authorities and forced to return to southern mexico. the 2nd is because of a policy that's being implemented by mexico. that is a policy of containment in forces. migrants to stay in southern mexico, creating a pilot, creating a bottleneck effect. and when the numbers just reach a breaking point, they're left with little recourse other than to, to, to come together as a group to come together at these care events and move together across mexico. always on a, the vast majority of cases with the attention of reaching the united states mobile, repulsive force. him whistler is ship us. thanks so much for the update. the lever of tin is his main trade union. the u g t t says its being targeted by the authorities after it refused to take part in talks on a new constitution cd and took part in protest last weekend against president guy said to tend to change the constitution. a few days earlier, he sent dozens of churches saying they were corrupt, critic say,
