1:06 pm
come in any time today. but investors are worried that if inflation numbers in india cross 8 percent interest rates could also go up here. now in terms of impact, the 1st major impact is that imports will become more expensive. that is especially worrying for a country like india that imports most of its oil. and we know that fuel prices impact prices of almost everything else. now, analysts say that the markets are expected to remain jittery until the situation in the u. s. t balances. so what exactly is the government doing to handle these high prices, this high inflation? some of the last few weeks we have seen some government policies come in. i mean, ah, a few weeks ago interest rates did go up the, our government has also been concerned about food security because there is an

1:19 pm
made this move? because this could end up benefiting the very people he doesn't want government right? well, of 2 reasons, the 1st one is just as your correspond that the alluded to earlier for the past 8 months. there has been a deadlock in the rock, your politics, and all sudden it could not push for the formation of a majority government. in contrast to what the coordination of framework wanted, which is national unity government would set by that she up political force. so this is one reason. the 2nd reason also is that when all said that withdraws from politics, he forces that our coordination of framework to work with other entities in order to form the government. which means that they will be working with political forces from the suddenly and the kurdish camps, which entail is also on them, you know,
1:20 pm
not abiding why the same to the should that they said to look to the center that they would form a government that is you know, by agreed upon by that she of political forces. so do you think this is actually a good move? how do you see this patting out? well, just when we saw that you rock your politics is not going to get more more complicated than just that. and there are several possibilities. so one of them and then also there will probably go back to the parliament because he can be more career let's at some points and changes. you know, decisions are, for instance, he decided not to participate in the elections of what he turned around and changed his decision and he, him ended up artist bedding and they alleged so that's one outcome. or the 2nd outcome is that the, with the coordination of framework will try to form the government. i'm pretty sure
1:21 pm
there will be some negotiations with other political forces in order to form the government. and the 3rd one way will have the continuation of the status quo till, till the, you know, until the government calls for an additional elections and few months time, possibly within a year. and we've already seen so much chaos and violence on the streets of iraq. is there a possibility we could see more as a result of this decision because outside of still has a lot of support? does any on the streets? so some, some analysts have been talking about the possibility of adults unders follow words probably demonstrating. and, but because of the politics of the coordination framework, which recent history taught us anything about to occupy the things that demonstrations do not lead to massive changes with, within the political process. so especially what we have seen in 2019 there have
1:22 pm
been massive demand by many keeps to you know, to overhaul the political process and make some changes that benefit the society. but these demonstrations have been repressed. i would say that the same thing would happen to possible such protests, but they can stay in the street as long as they want to without any significant political change. thank you for your time mess up. i'll receive middle east armless speaking to stumble. now iran's currency has dropped to its lowest level, ever against the dollar's talks on reviving the nuclear deal. stall. the reality is now trading at $332000.00 to the dollar. it was it 32000 when tyrone reached a nuclear deal with well palace back in 2015. how early last week they asked 431-7000 reports for one euro. the next day it goes to 325000 to date

1:25 pm
but also the risk to some of these m asylum seekers. some of them only learnt on friday, for example, that when that letter telling them they were on the list and sending them that the you and hcr, the refugee agency botched, the plan that was actually wrong. and just now, a lawyer for the you and hcr, the refugee agency her had said for in fact, the agency conveyed warnings of the legality of the arrangement with escalating urgency specificity enforce directly to the secretary of state that's pretty battelle. and now to the courts reiterating how seriously they believe, the whole dear, of sending people to rwanda not of showing that, i saw them claim, but for getting rid of them, if they win the asylum claim, they'll have to stay in rwanda. that's the theory. so obviously the you and i see all stressing how wrong they think the plan is. but don't forget also in a few hours, that is going to be another challenge to the flight by other migrant support groups

1:32 pm
without our father threatened to withdraw from parliament. if a majority government that's returned now to our top story, asian markets have tumbled on higher than expected inflation numbers that have come out from the u. s. we could speak now to steven. co crane is a cheap asia pacific economies at moody unless ex thank you for joining us. so steven, we're going to start with india because like many other countries, it is facing the same headwinds, high cost, a few high cost of food inflationary pressures in general. but it's the exchange rate has taken a bigger hit than most. why is that? well, in the india stands out in a couple of ways. one is that india's inflation rate is by far away the highest across all the major asian economies. it's nearly 8 percent year on year, and inflation is pretty broad across various components of the economy as well. so
1:33 pm
that's one. second, the indian economy, the performance of the indian economy, has been somewhat disappointing. it was very slow coming out of the last round of coven of the end of last year. and this year, so for 1st quarter and into the current quarter. manufacturing activity has been up under performing expectations. maybe the best way to set and consumer spending as some been somewhat modest. and now the, the heat wave across much of india may very will slow agricultural production. so there are many factors that are a leading to an economy that will be much lower than what many were expecting just a few months ago. and this on top of that, the central bank, the reserve bank of india, has been somewhat slow in raising interest rates from what we're the very low rates,
1:34 pm
you know, across asia. all of the central banks had very low interest rates since the corporate pandemic to try to support the economy. the central bank, the r b, i has had been hesitant to raise rates because they wanted to continue to support the economy. oh, they finally about a month ago did do a raise of 40 basis points for 10 percent. and then just last week they raised interest rates again another of 40 basis points. so there begin to make that move, but it's been a little bit slower than perhaps what many might have expected. okay, what about all the asian economies? how would they fairing with the current headwinds? i mean traditionally when u. s. rates rise, we see money flowing out of asian into the u. s. is that what is happening now? well, not quite so much like in the, in the past, the asian economies have been fairly resilient for a couple of reasons. one is that up to today really over the last year or so,
1:35 pm
the export economy, the exports out of the asian pacific region. i've been fairly strong, so that's actually been supporting foreign exchange holdings, balance of trade, and so forth. the current account balances look better today than they have going into a past period of uncertainty. so the asian pacific economy is looking pretty good. but of course, there are some headwinds beginning to grow if the u. s. economy and the european economy began to slow, then demand. some of the export to ban may very well wayne. and then of course, inflation coming on the back of the russian invasion of ukraine and i, i, commodity prices, and the 0 coven policy in china is creating some modest supply chain disruptions. not like what we saw a year ago or so. but still some model supply chain,
1:36 pm
no restrictions that are working through the regional economy as well. the federal reserve in the u. s. has been very aggressive. unlike other countries on pushing operates to bring down inflation. but there is a danger, it can cause with recessionary, precious. how much longer do you expect rates to go up like that? there is a bit of a danger. if the, if the fed has to move very, very quickly, no central banks around the world, they want to move slowly. they'd like, if they're going to change rates on the upside or downside, they want to do it very gradually. so as they don't disrupt financial markets and they can manage expectations of investors, but they did raise rates by 50 basis points to half a percentage point at their last meeting at that meeting this week. it's fairly well expected that it will be another 50 basis point rate hike and perhaps in july as well. after that,
1:37 pm
we had generally thought that the fed would follow a more gradual $25.00 basis point rate hike at each of us meeting meetings beginning in september. but given war inflation is in the us now at about 8 and a half percent. that if it's not contain, or maybe more clearly to say if inflation expectations are not, can change, the fed might decide to continue this 50 basis point types going down the road. and steven briefly, there's been a lot of pressure on crypto currencies. how do you see them ferrying going forward? the crypto currencies are still volatile. it's so hard to predict what will happen with crypto currencies. i hesitate to comment on crypto currencies because they're impacted by so many different factors. and to be honest, it's a, an asset to this day is not completely will understood. okay,

the gun safety proposal. it does not do everything that i think is needed, but it reflects important steps in the right direction. with bipartisan support, there are no excuses for delay. let's get this done. but some don't want it done. i think it's deeply disappointing that republican leadership decided to get in league with the democratic conference in the senate to put together a gun control bill. you know, that should be a huge red flag for republican voters going into the fall. significant proposals include incentives for states to pass so called red flag laws, which allow a judge to decide whether a gun via or owner poses a potential threat to others. federal background checks and buyers under $21.00 would include access to their records as minors and federal funding for mental health care and increase school security. so, but these measures full well short of what's being demanded by gun control.
