conditions. unions have warned, the strike could lead to coordinated action across other industry. and the cost of living crisis is also affected. the outcome of the legislative elections in france with the president losing his majority in the national assembly is centrist coalition, emerged as the single largest blog bought last dozens of seats. and you left wing alliance lead by sean log mellon. sean has become the main opposition. he's now calling for the parties in the alliance to form a united block rico. the chaos it has been left by the defeat of micro count spill into the national assembly. that'd be the worst thing for our country. that's the reason why. even though i don't have the authority at the moment, of course, i'll go by what's decided by each individual party. but i believe we must be and must state the united alternative. that is to say, nope, should become a single group in parliament while maureen le pen then her far right national rally
6:06 pm
party were also celebrating after turning seats into a c. 9 the pen last presidential election to mac cron. earlier the ca supposed to to consider. cuz i think that everyone considers that this is a victory for the sample monitor. now we're entering the assembly with a very powerful group of m. p. 's with the 1st opposition party ahead of left hand and to me. and consequently, we're going to be able to work on the position as i had requested from the french people. we will operate with our, with all the needs there are granted by the constitution to an opposition group, which is the 1st one in the family turner. how has the latest from paris, what it was a dreadful night, of course for emmanuel macaroni and his centrist in parliament, losing 100 seats, losing the absolute majority that they had for 5 years able to govern for 5 years with essentially a free hand. they will now need to make alliances, new alliances in parliament, if that to get any legislation through. and he has
6:07 pm
a big reform agenda that he wants to push through, whether that is on an ad hoc case by case basis, or some sort of formal hook up is yet to be seen. they'll be talking pretty much immediately to the republicans of the traditional rights who are now the 4th force in parliament. they 161 seats micro needs 44 seats borrowed from somewhere to make a majority, whether he's able to do that with them or not. he's not entirely certain the number of them said they don't want any hook up with the ruling party. and so the prospect is there for at least partially deadlocked government in the next is with an economic crisis. of course, worsening all the time. that's one of the only problem he faces for centrist, hemmed in, increasingly in this parliament. now by rising forces on the extreme, not just the left in the fall left. but as you were saying the far right as well, there in the pen making a major come back off to coming 2nd in the presidential election, increasing vastly her parties standing in parliament here. she says she'll fight on, on issues like immigration, unemployment, and security. and she made the point at her party in pure party terms,
6:08 pm
is now the 2nd largest in the parliament, tissues canal which is holding urgent, bailout talks of the international monetary fund as it struggles to contain a spiraling economic crisis. the government says it needs a $5000000000.00 lifeline. a lack of foreign currency has led to shortages of food and medicine while fuel supplies, i do to announce within days, mcnelson and it has more from the capital, colombo, the 10 member delegation of the i am of held meetings at the prime minister's office. that's a building you see behind me led by the chief of mission peter brewer. now essentially sherlock has run out of options and he's hoping that the i'm, if we come through in terms of assistance because things are dire over my shoulder just and on the other side of the present. prime minister's office is fuel cues. and this is the situation around the country, kilometers and kilometers of cues as motorists tried desperately to secure the
6:09 pm
supplies they need. and it's not just fuel, it's food, it's cooking gas, it's medicines, the government can no longer afford to pay for these. and that's the reason it's calling on the i m f. but the i m f has obviously a number of conditions we're hearing from the prime minister's office. that debt restructuring, or a pop proper plan. that re lanka must present in terms of how it proposes to pay back. all the money has borrowed is one of the key things that the international monetary fund wants to see from the government of sri lanka before it will take discussions forward. some of the things that it has insisted on is a proper tax regime or so that government revenues a can come up to a decent level. the other thing is an end to subsidies. so a very much a pointer that times are going to get tougher before they can even beginning, begin to get better or so as much as the i m. f team is here. there are some tough
6:10 pm
decisions and tough times ahead. zimbabwe health workers have gone on strike to protest against low salaries and for working conditions. it's the 2nd war count i nurses and other health professionals since the carbon 19 pandemic began 2 years ago. i room tasa has more from harring protests against the bob is government urrea here. doctors and nurses in the public health sector. no, they are taking a huge risk in the past. some workers have been victimized or fired for speaking out about working conditions and salaries for these people are growing increasingly desperate and say they wages are being eroded by rising inflation. this is an act of last resort. we ask the public to hold the government accountable for how they're treating health workers. but more importantly, how they are treating just a general civil service. it's common knowledge that the currencies imperial,
6:11 pm
but they have not taken action. most of the people you see here, don't own houses, is the 2nd will caught by health with as jury the club 19 pandemic. last week, unions reject to the governments offer to double min bestsellers. a 100 percent wage increase may sound like a lot, but inflation reached more than 130 percent in may. that means it'll do middle tell people facing a rising cost of living. i public sector employees want they wage is paid in u. s. dollars, union leaders say the lowest paid government worker take some less than 20 thousands of bobby dollars a month. that's less than $100.00 us dollars. they went that to go up to $540.00 us dollars. but that may not be feasible. government didn't, is to d, monetize the or financial sector convert there is in dollar balances and other savings in zoomed will us into you as the last august that requires

6:13 pm
after decades of conservative rule, columbia has elected its 1st ever left wing president, former rebel fight. gustavo petro defeated the right wing populist rodolfo hernandez petros a running mate. francere marquez will be in columbia is 1st black vice president to raise a boat begins our coverage. oh, the rain did not stop thousands of people from gathering outside goose, double paid through headquarters, o b economist and former left when guerrilla, when the elections with just over 50 percent of the vote. it's anywhere in columbia . the 1st time a left wing candidate has won the presidency 100 while you're on. i want to cry. this is the 1st time we are going to have a popular government from the left,
6:14 pm
from the people of those who have suffered the armed conflict. and he is someone who represents us, the people on the street. oh, these people have been demanding change in this country, were liberals and conservatives have been sharing powered for years. oh, oh yeah, i agree with getting approved that of change. these was spread through us 30 to presidential bid . he's now a seasoned politician who's victory at columbia to the list of latin american countries that have elected center left precedence in recent years. that on sunday evening, he was presented to his supporters by his running mate, france, jamarkis, who will be columbia's 1st, afro colombian woman vice president. locate, we are writing history right now. a new history for latin america. what is coming
6:15 pm
here is change real change in which we commit to life itself. we are not going to disenchanted voters that have been screaming that from now on columbia changes. peter defeated, 77 year old populous world for a man this who was referred by many as the king of take talk. but people will face many challenges. 47 percent of the country did not vote for him annually say he will have to negotiate his reforms in congress for this is not only the 1st time that oliver and candy it, it's been elected in columbia. but also the 1st time that we have op left when congress to because back to study coded social movement behind gustavo, better was able to elect, ah, a good number of congress members. so he will have a congress that he's in favor of him, not a complete majority, has in car bama, jaretha and congress. but he has a good number of congress members. and dad is also uh,
6:16 pm
something that are signs that he could have a success in his turn. oh, so peter will take off his in august for many, his government will empower the people in the country who have been ignored by authorities for years. alexander ramp, yet he is standing by for us in bo kara manga the campaign headquarters all fernandez. the 1st to let's go, i'd say to raise a bow, who is in the capitol bog eta. hello there teresa historic moment for the country. but the president has a lengthy list of reforms he's planning to implement. well, yes, it was a very late night for many people in columbia. you just saw in the images of the story were reported last night. people were on the streets celebrating, especially those who voted for goofed i will be through during his speech, federal spoke about piece, about social and environmental justice. he also reached out to his polo political
6:17 pm
opponents talking about the possibility of a national according to work towards solving people's programs. and also, you know, there's, there's lots of very ambitious campaign promises that were made by petra, one of them, for example, implementing fully vert peace accords, columbia. the colombian government signed a peace deal with a fark back in 2016. but many parts of this country continue to be at war with left when groups paramilitary group. so this is something that the president has been very, very, gave a lot of importance. the 2nd issue is the economy. what to do with economy, increasing taxes, for example. and also it revising oil and gas exploitation. there's already a $150.00 exploration projects in columbia that many say, you know, will need to be revised. so what is going to happen with that and what impact is that going to have in the market?
6:18 pm
we're starting to hear also about who is going to be part of federal cabinet. one of the things that is coming out is the possibility of women minister of defense in affords, in an institution that has been accused her and investigated for serious human rights abuses. in this country, so there's lots of changing a huge challenges for gustavo federal. their biggest challenges is not only finding consensus, but also in a way the high expectation that exists. we just heard, for example, that the national liberation army, a left wing group operating here, announced that they're ready to sit down to a pete with feast talks with the administration of both though better by their also warning him that if he doesn't carry out the necessary reforms people will be on the streets once again. so what that will be there is going to be walking a very thin line between pleasing his voters and respecting this country's institutions, which is you know, what democracies on about. indeed,
6:19 pm
thank you very much for bringing us up to speed to raise a bow line, francine bog, into that head to alexander amputee. now, who is in bo car, a monger, alexander? it was a tight race. what does hernandez, his popularity say about the power of social media? yes, and there's no doubt that those fernandez as lead a very successful campaign, mostly on line, mostly on tick tock. he self described themselves as, as the king of fick talk a, and this was a campaign that had essentially one issue. and that was that reading of corruption, the columbia political system. somehow that the is a message that the reach that many here in columbia, everybody has a phone, obviously the in this day and age and, and reaching even a lot of people. they're usually not very interested in politics. he was able to
6:20 pm
present himself as a sort of oddball outsider, and people believe, or at least i'm millions of people believe the possibility that he could reach the capital bogota and sort of have a scorcher to her to approach against the traditional establishment that i think of that, if you look at his success, roughly 10000000 of voters, roughly half of those are these affected voters that were looking for a change from the establishment by were wary of or are wary of the last and gustavo appraisal pay throws ambitious proposals to change the economic system in the country, the other half though, we're more of the traditional conservative voters who tend to back more traditional candidates. but we're scared of gustavo patron decided that they prefer that to go
6:21 pm
with this and known a candidate at rodolfo and, and this so definitely a very unique, a very unusual campaign. a wasn't enough in the end to win this election. but there is a lesson there for many politicians who want to have success in columbia and politics . and even gustavo peter had to change his way in the run off and getting off of the stages and the public events. and instead, the also taking the fight to the social networks in what he called micro politics. we saw him in the last couple of weeks of the campaigns hanging out in families, homes, especially poor families, of farmers and so forth. the, in a more rural parts of the country, bringing is man siege, almost a person to person and transmitting that through his social networks. so this,
6:22 pm
that has meant that big change in the way politics have been promoted in this country. and now to go to putting on this will be a senator, he will continue to be a political force and he also called pe, throw on sunday and said that he's willing to talk to him and to participate in here. some of his proposals for change. it's only been a fascinating campaign to watch. thank you very much. feel reporting alexandra ram, p a t live for us they let's take a closer look now at the power of social media, specifically tick tock on election results. as we heard hernandez took part in that very public took part in very few rather public debates. instead gaining traction on the social media platform by casting himself as affable strike talking and granddad in the philippines. ferdinand marcos junior used similar tactics in his successful presidential campaign. his campaign was accused of spreading misinformation with videos that cost decades of repression by his father's
6:23 pm
administration as a golden age. ahead of ken hughes and general elections in august, tick tock has been used to spread hates and this information that's according to our report by the nonprofit mozilla foundation for more on this. so let's have to double and, and to kevin o'connor, who is a dis, information, an extremist extremism analyst at the institute for strategic dialogue. karen, thanks so much for being on this news. i just wanted to ask you, 1st of all, social media not just picked up, but social media and general powerful on our new young voters. does that have an influence in that age groups as well? no, it has an influence across the boards and one of the misconceptions i think with sick talk as well that it only skews young. we see that there is a wide adoption by multiple demographics of the platform and what politicians and political candidates can do quite effectively. is try and tap into as social media
6:24 pm
platforms like tick tock and what we thought columbia was trying to access that younger voters and try to use that younger demographic. as on the platform, we're constantly hearing about how these platforms are disseminating disinformation . it's something that you'll widely across yourself. how complex is this problem and policing is on tick tock. it's uniquely challenging because of some of the features of the platform. it does. there is a lack of transparency on the part of the top form. what this means is that there's, there's no transparency on action, thus the platform itself takes against miss or disinformation networks that may be active on the particularly around election period. we, we've also been tracking some russian stays, fact media information regarding ukraine since every as well, for example. and then the other side of that is that kicked off does not offer data access that is comparable to other platforms. so or researchers like myself,
6:25 pm
the right nor platform, there is no way to conduct scalable research to try and track disinformation or misinformation on the top from it's all done quite manually. and while i can point to various examples, knowing examples of object of this information, i can tell you to the totality of this because of the lack of data access more. more to that point, karen, i guess, is the issue that these platforms is sort of developing faster than the policies needed to police them. and how do you then combat that? sure, of course, is not though that kicked off has growing massively in a recent years, but also with this recently passed as 1000000000 active users, i believe. so it really does need to provide that kind of access those kinds of lights and access to the platform because it doesn't kind of get us the ease of excuses that hon offers may after a few years and then for a challenge. yeah, that provides a unique challenges for researchers to because
6:26 pm
a users on the platform or candidates or people who are intent on using the platform to spread hatred or division. or this information often move faster than the platform where researchers can move themselves. also, it's a difficult question to answer, but how do you say these social media platforms and talking specifically, i guess about kick tug. how do you see them evolving and what impact will that have on say, future elections? well, you know, on the, on the kind of politics, political and electoral side. yeah. what we've seen in the philippines want to see in kenya, we've seen in columbia, is that truck is a political platform, is being used by can this, but also by political groups to try and sway and ship public opinion. and this also include the use of miss and disinformation, but on the, the platform on the technology company side of things as well that we are seeing greater pressure on the, on legislation that is going to essentially force them to come to the table and to, to provide greater transparency, greater algorithm transparency in particular,
6:27 pm
and greater access to the plan as well. so it, when it comes to tick tock in particular and gone are the days when the platinum because they're not being used as, as a political to i'm always, you know, these 3 countries is that it is and there's no, there's no denying us and care and lastly, just before we let you go, can you talk us through the influence of social media country specific as does the use of these platforms, different depending on where the uses of from and how does that thing changes influence? it will depend on what country you are in. japan will, will kind of shape the content. you see, you'll be provided more content that is nor tough for me and provides the things is relevant to you. and then it's up to you as to how you shape it, how long you watch something in particular. and yet each country will provide local and specific content. and that's why is it pushing effective to like other platforms for candidates as seeking off of but also for people who are determined
6:28 pm
to sway public opinion with false or misleading claims information as well. it really is a fascinating topic and we really appreciate your thoughts on it. thank you very much for your time. karen aqona, a disinformation and extremism analyst at the institute for strategic dialogue. thank still ahead. on al jazeera, the last known remains of assassinated, congolese leader and independence icon. the trace law is returned to his family by former colonial power belgium. a refugee living in kenya builds a solar powered plans to supply his camp with clean energy and in sport. max with damp and extensive championship laid in the formula one ah

right hot dry and dusty covers it most of the time we get seasonal. when did you know in the middle east and as one picking up again out of the hot interior of iraq . so we got $54947.00, she comes slowly south. it's still pretty hot and this is picking up the dust, which is lights come down with a rather brown sky from kya down to bahrain. probably cut the forecast was leave the doe how the capital is still well above where it should be. the average is about 40. but as the wind picks up, dusty wind picks up, the temperature tend to come down just a little bit back to where it should be. it's much more pleasant all 11 time coast . a few shells, maybe from gather up towards lebanon, a mass in the northern turkey, another one over asked a northern pakistan. this in particular might have caught your eye cuz 50 degrees is not hot at all. no, sir, but 50 degrees below where it should be the average. your cobble is quite high, few showers here and then it warms up again. are tommy t assist? i'd like to give you some good news. the horn of africa proffer, if you like shout,

some people say that they said the globalization going on, but that referred to thing called every globalization. our accomplish speakers from heads of state to business and policy leaders will discuss evolving technology, education, culture, sustainability, and the impact on the economy. ah lou. oh, hello, you want to go to 0? i'm emily anguish. he's a reminder of our top stories. the salad protests have been taking place in the belgian capital against the rising cost of living. labor unions cold for

a nationwide strike. they demanding better pay and working conditions. shanker is holding urgent bailout talks with the international monetary fund as it struggles to contain a spiraling economic crisis. the government says it needs a $5000000000.00 law fund. and gustavo petro has been elected columbia's 1st left wing, and president, and in decades of conservative control, the former rebel fine to secure just over 50 percent of the vote. 3 points ahead of right wing populist were dover and ended. russia is urging lithuania to lift to ban on the transit of some goods to kellen. in grad on the baltic sea, the russian exclaimed, is wedged between lithuania and poland, the restrictions effect, the only rail route between men, land, russia, and the territory. if the waning officials say the measures will be on goods sanctioned by the a, you across its territory,
6:33 pm
it includes coal and other metals. the kremlin has bound to respond if passage isn't restored for more on this. so it's bringing samuel romani who is in oxford and he's an associate fellow at the royal united services institute. samuel, thanks so much for being on the program. first thing can you talk us through the relationship between calin grad and russia and why it's so important to most? so killing grad is an important transit route to obviously the european union because of a strategic location here. the baltic sea zenia poland as also an important area for a lot of the transit of key russian military assets as well. including iskander as a nuclear april marseilles, as a feeder power projection on the baltic sea. busy salt multiple significance is for russian point of view. so then one impact will at the wendy's restrictions and have on moscow, how will it be impacted? while the 3 is restrictions have been factored in for some time, poland actually was the originator of this idea. in the campaign plan,
6:34 pm
the poland had in the war and ukraine. one of the plans was due a band with cargo and ro transit between russia and european countries. and the u sanctions on the on call and other goods had been in effect for well over a month now. so the russians about trying to back to the sin, but still an immediate blow, one half of counting grants. products, for example, come from european countries. so as an immediate supply chain, yet we're hearing that russia is now threatening lithuania. how seriously should lithuanian take these threats or russia's currently threaten the sovereignty of the baltic states ever since? the 990 s and the car again, of doctrine came forward when they attacked the baltic states for supposedly discriminating against that, like russians. we've seen a russian alter nationalist like body. maria saw the out in the media where the late body bernacki threatened lithuania, sovereignty with invasion. so russia threatening lithuania, certainly not new lithuanian russian relationship is extremely poor. for example, as the charge affairs, not even a master level relationship again,
6:35 pm
did you countries, but there certainly going to be some ground for escalation to watch. one of which is eventual complete, lockheed on all the way indian products entered russia with the way needs of already stopped importing russian gas and energy. so there's not much diversity. can you move in the energy heard, but not as you related goods. i think there's a chance of russian economic retaliation. and what about the chance to rush according bay? do you think that it will and does it have the resources to to do so, given that went out full month seemed to the invasion ukraine. so invasion crowds are largely symbolic, read because they are just any bas showing that they disapprove of that, that the bulk of states took an alternative course. they joined the european union . they join nato. they didn't want to be ham baffles of the of russia like belarus began. so i don't think the invasion threats are that serious and as you stayed exactly right, they're tied up in ukraine. and last thing they would want to do is read an article via escalation, that would not only lead you how big russia nato, but also lead to lot heavier forms of artillery that he may be
6:36 pm
a fighter jets entering the ukranian theater by proxy. so an invasion would be a disastrous idea of russia, even if some commentators, marcia, are threatening yet in response to what they call a blockade by lithuania against common grad settings. fascinating, we appreciate your analysis on these issues, samuel romani, an associate fellow at the whirl united services institute. thank you. millions of people in bangladesh stranded by the worst one soon. flags in a century are at risk of food and water shortages. now, flooding is raking havoc in northern and north eastern districts, and it's expected to get worse with water levels rising in major rivers. the army has been deployed to help with the relief efforts. millions of homes remain under water. roads have been cut off and local airports are closed. dozens of people have died since the storms began back in april. tamya challenger has more from i'm please 20 kilometers from the phillip city. this area is called measured by
6:37 pm
there. you can see right behind me. lot of this village or miles after miles are inundated with flood water. i've been sport speaking to some of the villagers here . they said they don't have any fresh water. they've been using the flood water, boiling them, and drinking them, and using whatever it means to cook food in a dry space, whatever they have here. and they haven't received any flood. some of the people on their own took shelter, and the school nearby. they received some rice ration from the government agencies and local politician, but nothing else. the government has deployed military navy, coast guard, even air force rescue holly proctors are making reconnaissance flight, tried to rescue people from remote areas. so for at least 100000 people have been evacuated or rescued by the military's in this region, it's a bangladesh has about a division. still it is one division which is about 4 districts. so it's a big area and at least 60 percent of that division is inundated with flood water.
6:38 pm

match the sex at birth. there must be categories, women, men, and of course a category for trans women and trans man, a space. i want anyone who loves competing in aquatic sports to have a space and to achieve their goals. in that space. fair competition is a strong hold and staple of our community. i am asking everyone to take a breath. listen before reacting. listen to the science and experts. listen to the people who have stood up here and have been telling you how difficult it is been to reconcile inclusion and fantasy ah swimming is the 2nd limited discipline after rugby to introduce such a band. why most of the sports used to stop the throne level as a basis for allowing trans women to compete with 5 and not too much? i did not see this coming, but i believe for
6:53 pm
a long time that we can talk about what the barriers to entry look like, what transition requirements look like, but our right benz for any trans woman who experience part of puberty. i'd in the coming see that come through the other sports now have to decide if with its proposed open category of swimming, a set a precedent. they wished to follow the dang. i'm the richardson al jazeera, they're in sports science, as ross tucker has been involved in developing a policy on the subject for world rugby, he explained was thoughtful authorities have moved away from the issue of testosterone levels when ruling on transgender athletes. if you go back about 20 years, i think that was when sports officials recognize the challenge that they would be faced with. and they basically asked the question is, why is there an issue in the issue? is that males have performance advantages by virtue of what this foster and gives
6:54 pm
them. and the solution that came up with is if you take that this foster away, then you take the advantage away and it turns out that that doesn't work. so there are now 13 studies that have been published in the last 15 years and universally, without exception, they show that even taking the testosterone levels right down into woman's ranges does not remove the biology that has been created by this duster. and so for example, where muscle mass and strength of 50 percent higher males and females, taking testosterone away any takes about 5 percent of that away. and because sport is about bodies and it's about biological sex, the reality is that we have to now say, well, why do we want women's for to exist? and if we want women sports to be a category that says to provide fairness, an opportunity for females. then we can have inclusion where before stuart is trying to achieve a level of balance between, it now has to make a choice. one of them has to be private thoughts about the other. and when swimming

is done, instead of fantasy tex priority, and we'll seek to find inclusion elsewhere, but never at the expense of fairness to women. english golf, a math. fitzpatrick has joined the ranks of major champions of changing the us open title at brookline. fitzpatrick was leading by one during the final hole when he found himself in the bunker. but under pressure, the 27 year old pulled up, one of the shots of the tournament, sustained up the when fitzpatrick had previously won the us amateur open at the same court. 9 years ago. he's playing partner with delatory, finished a birdie will miss the birdie, which was full of clothes. and with that for patrick took the 1st major title, which also moving into the top 10 on the label. yeah. yeah, it's just the feelings out of this world. it's so cliche stuff you dream. i was a kid and yet to achieve it i can retire. happy man, tomorrow for me,
