10:00 am
in the news at excitement from across the glided hill in south america as methinks to match my rodonna ambros, they'll look to and a 20 you wait for trophy. join us for the welcome count, down on out his era. ah, a deadly earthquake devastate southern afghanistan, at least 280 people have been killed. ah, on sammy's a dan, this is al jazeera alive from dell hall. so coming up historic flooding in india or bangladesh forces millions from their homes rescue team struggle to reach those in need. this is, this is
10:01 am
a tragic purity. us election officials reveal how supporters event president donald trump threatened them to overturn the results of the 2020 vote. ah, armed one indigenous protested. dies in ecuador as anti government demonstrations take of violent turn. ah, now we begin with breaking news out of afghanistan. the interior ministry now says at least 280 people have been killed in the magnitude 5.9 earthquake. it rocks the southeast of the country in the early hours of wednesday morning. buildings have been destroyed. hundreds of people are injured. the quake happened about 44 kilometers from the city of host, near particular province. the tremors could be felt in neighboring pakistan and
10:02 am
iran. let's go to journalist latifah, he's in cobble. so 1st of all, officials have been saying they expect the death toll to rise further, whether the numbers stand now were still $280.00 killed and hundreds injured and they are right that the whole is going to increase unfortunately, because we're talking about a very early morning quake, when people were still in their homes, many were probably still sleeping and we're talking about homes that aren't necessarily built to a standard to withstand earthquakes. and to, to, you know, really be built of any kind of a code. so that the death whole is very likely high and also getting to the people is going to be difficult. you know, as you said, it's about 40 kilometers from the main city. we don't know necessarily the conditions of the road. we don't know how many cars can get there, how quickly they can get there. you know,
10:03 am
how many people have already been able to go to the hospital. so unfortunately, this is something that's common when you're, when you're talking about an event like this in a remote part of a country like a lot of fun. all right, i'll rescue teams. have they be able to reach people? do we have a situation where we fear people are trapped in the rubble? what's the situation on the ground there? the situation is that the government is sending helicopters, they're sending teams. they're asking for local agencies to get involved. to pull people out of the rubble, we know that, you know, at least a 100 homes have already been destroyed. so when you have homes destroyed, you will have people stuck in the rubble. you will have people, you know, rushing off to try and get to hospitals. ah, hospitals will be overcrowded, trying to deal with the, the intake. so as of right now the information is, is still trickling. and because as we said, it is at the very remote part of the area, but given sort of the conditions over all these are things that are very common. and this is why officials keep saying that that,
10:04 am
that the dead death dead in injured rate will continue to rise ra username. situations like this, some form of heavy equipment or special equipment is needed to reach people out. doesn't understand, have that kind of a clue. so they, they are sending helicopters and we know that they have that the equipment again, this is the thing, is that in, in the past, when the government responded to natural disasters, they often relied on foreign agencies on, on other ah, countries to intervene. and you know, responding to natural disasters has been a major issue for this country, even back during the republic because it takes a lot of organization and takes a lot of equipment. a lot of things that necessarily they may not always have or that just getting to again, just getting to those areas. i is often quite difficult just getting the equipment there can also set back the relief efforts. you know, we saw this when there was avalanches and snow storms and in the northern province

of pine cheddar, took them several days to just clear the main road to be able to get aid and trucks and things like that into the province. when i go really challenging situation, thanks for updating us on it. now bangladesh sent troops to help millions of people trapped by flood waters in the northeast. it's the worst flooding in the region in more than a century. this time via chandry reports from select, the government is struggling to get drinking water and food to those in need. shook her ali is a livestock farmer for lost his home in the flood. he and his family have been living on the side of the road for almost a week now without any kind of help to get those out and go and see the condition of our home. what is the point of talking about it? it is only law who can provide. he is the one who gives and who takes away

our visit to the area prime minister check us, say, future building developments should take into account the number of natural disasters that bangladesh experiences. many of this people are still recovering from the last month pre monsoon flash floods. dow home to take shelter here. there's no food or fresh water. it would help if we got some relief from the government so we can get by for the poor, rural farmers who have lost everything. it will take months if not years to rebuild their homes. they need all the system they can get. but help is yet to come. now, a neighboring india, dozens of people have died in flooding and land slides, and some states soldiers have been deployed to get supplies to areas that are cut off. tens of thousands of people have already been moved to safety, but many are still stranded. pop natal is in spots out in the badly hit the wrong district and joins us live from there. so is help now reaching some of those
10:08 am
stranded people. well the situation is quite dire. there's incessant rain fall over the on the hitting side of a psalm, and that's causing rivers down stream to swell and cause new rounds of flooding. and that is complicating relief and rescue effort. so a lot of people have had to look out for themselves. i mean, we're coming to you from an embankment and as you can see on my right, that is a makeshift camp and people are living here. and that is a scene we've seen across the state. people here are villagers, they've come from a nearby place that is now almost completely under water. and as you can see, that is actually a field that is covered with water. and those are the makeshift rafts that people here are using to go back and forth to get supplies and food beer, say they haven't really received much food and relief and are looking out for themselves. we've seen them chopping wood,
10:09 am
they're making fire so they can cook. and there's a lot of concerned about potential diseases that these floods could bring. so people here say they sent that children away to relatives homes that have not been impacted by the flood. but what be really picked up during the course of our reporting is a lot of anxiety amongst people. you know, these people are farmers, like most people in the state. and they said that these floods have coincided with sewing season. and whatever little crop they have is now, as you just saw, completely under water. so they don't know when they'll be able to make a living next. not to kill floods are an annual affair in a song, and the ecology and economy of the state need some level of flooding. but resident said they haven't seen this kind of flooding in many years. this is the 2nd major round of flooding they've seen this year. the 1st was back in may, that was caused by heavier and earlier than usual, pre monsoon showers are so officials be spoke to at the time. also said they were
10:10 am
gearing up and talking up for another route that we are in the middle of right now . but there are many challenges. the military has been called in. we've been on rescue boats and seen how they're saving people. but a lot of people are not really willing to leave their homes. they, they don't want to leave their fields. they don't know when they're going to be back. and when they start rebuilding the lives across the state, the number of people affected by these floods is rising. it's now crossed 5 and a half 1000000 people. and over the last 24 hours, 7, most people have died. so they got a lot more flooding than usual. what is going to happen to people who are going to be displaced for longer than usual? well, that is the big question, and that is what they're anxious about. or there are relief cams more than 1600 camps have been set up across the state. and they are housing more than 250000
10:11 am
people. but most people have basically been left to do what you can see here. and because the situation is really changing authorities and people are really struggling, i mean, just a few, a kilometer down this embankment was actually reached a yesterday and a relief camp was swept away. so people have had to move and set up a whole more set up caps on a national highway that is also now a submerged in water. and i will leave it there. thanks so much of natal. pakistan's government says progress has been made and talks with the international monetary fund to revive the countries bailout program. it's expecting a $6000000000.00 financial lifeline to be extended. pakistan has been on the brink of an economic crisis. foreign exchange reserves are drawing up and its currency recalled. lows savvy crown prince mohammed ben solomon is due to visit turkey for the 1st time since the 2018 murder of john mister amount. how shall
