hello, i am emily anglin. this is al jazeera alive from tow house are coming up. a funeral is underway in south africa for 21 young people found dead in a bar in mysterious circumstances. i'm latasha barbara in paris where rail workers who are on strike demanding better pay to help them cope with the rising cost of living and increasing concern over food supplies in kenya as to the drought takes its toll on crops and livestock. ah, hello and welcome to the program. the british prime minister is once again fighting for political survival after the resignation of 2 senior cabinet members. both the finance and health minister step down on tuesday saying they've lost confidence, embarrass johnson. after months of scandals,
12:02 pm
he said to face tough questions in parliament on wednesday, johnson has already named his replacement education secretary nadeem at holly takes richey. so next position as chancellor of exchequer and the prime ministers, chief of staff, steve barclay replaces sergeant javert as health secretary. a number of junior ministers have also stepped down saying, the prime minister is unfit to govern where we challenge begins our coverage. a double bomb shell for britain scan, b blighted prime minister. but one that will need all his famous survival skills. free from the resignation of 2 of his most important ministers came with personal attacks that could prove politically fatal. first out was health secretary such javits with a judgment that the conservative party had lost the faith of the electorate. it's clear to me that this situation will not change under your leadership, he writes, and you have therefore lost my confidence to sticking the knife. and shortly after,
12:03 pm
with chancellor richie sumac, the public right? the expect government to be conducted properly, competently and seriously. i believe the standards a worth fighting for, and that is why i am resigning. peppered with questions as he arrived home, such as jared used every resigning politicians favorites, no comment cliche. i'm just going to go spend some time with my family. thank you for coming. thank you. party gates, the are in partisan affair. the downing street flat refurbishment. numerous scandals have brought the prime minister to this point. but what seemingly precipitated these big desertion is the admission from number 10 that johnson did know of a disgraced m. p. chris pinches previous sexual assault allegations, despite claiming he didn't minutes before his minister's walked. mister johnson went on tv to apologize. i think it was a mistake and i apologize for it. i think in hindsight, it was the wrong thing to do. i apologize. everybody has been badly affected by it,
12:04 pm
so i just want to make absolutely clear that there's no place in this government or anybody who is predatory or who abuses that position of power the press. the big question is, of course what next? although there have been several further junior resignations, the rest of the cabinets are sticking by their leader for now at least, given johnson survived advice competence last month. disgruntled m. p. 's would have to change the rules to hold another one. but in a year, opposition lead, a case is calling for elections. we need a fresh start for break and we need a change of government. this government is collapsing, the tory party is corrupted. and changing one man at the top of the tory party won't make any difference, he will fix the problems. let's have a fresh start for britain. let's have a real change of government. but at the moment that looks like a long shot, as does any expectation that boris johnson will follow his ministers and resign.
12:05 pm
we'll reach helen's desert and go to poll brennan now, who's at downing straight. hello there. paul moore, resignations this morning. as johnson prepays promises questions and a grilling by seeing the empty life, that's right, no capital ministerial level resignation this morning, but we have had 2 people falling on our swords and resigning in frustration, frankly at the way the number 10 operation has been conducted in recent days and weeks. firstly laura talk, she's a ministerial aid, a voluntary private secretary in the transport department. but more interestingly, a man called will quince who is a minister for children. and it was he who was sent out to do the the media interview round on monday morning, saying that the prime minister knew nothing about crisp inches problems and past the actual facts that version of events that will quince have been given was false
12:06 pm
. and chris, sorry, wilkins feeling today that he had no option, frankly given of embarrassment, but to quit. that said, we have seen the defense critique and wallace go into number 10 in the last half an hour. no indication that he is on his way out so far he has expressed his support for the prime minister's position. so at the moment, a couple more resignations, but not at the cabinet level. and as you say, boris johnson is not after the was not by any stretch of the imagination, a really tough day ahead. prime minister's questions. 11 g m t a half a 40 minute session in parliament with the leader of the opposition, but most interestingly, it would be good to watch exactly what the conservative back benches ask of the prime minister and what level of anger of a vent at him. but more importantly, i think the liaison committee like a super committee of 35 persons of all the individual poly mentary committees. they
12:07 pm
come together. it's a 2 hour session, more likely to be formal. forensically interrogation of the prime minister, i think, is going to have a really tough time. but johnson does like big, broad brush strokes to be pinned down by a committee of committed and peas and committee chair people. it's not something for us. johnson is going to enjoy for the 2 hours of this afternoon session. certainly a critical day ahead poll and what about things cold for a snap in general election? how likely is that to happen? it possible. it's certainly an option that bars johnson supporters has put on the table as he's losing support within the conservative party. the thinking was perhaps that if he went to the government, sorry to the country, that he might find more support to have. that option does seem to be being away. given the results of a year of opinion poll by the,
12:08 pm
by the company you got overnight, which showed the 69 percent of people now believe that forrest johnson should resign them. for the 1st time, a majority of conservative voting members of the public. also believe he should go previously it's been below 50 percent is now 54 percent of people who would vote conservative. now believe the prime minister, that conservative prime minister should go 68 percent of the total though, believe he will try, at least to find on. there is no indication at all the forest. johnson will willingly leave the address down the street behind me. i mean, his track record shows that he is just not the sort of person to quit willingly. all right, thank you very much for bringing up to speed will cross spectrum throughout the day poker and, and live for us outside downing street to south africa. now where the president is among the dignitaries attending the mass funeral of 21 young people in east london, the students were found dead in a bond last sunday in mysterious circumstances. authorities are investigating the
