would take to the streets that would come and basically sit in until they saw his exit. as you can see behind me the crowd. i mean, essentially, in the far this sense the presidential secretariat but tens of thousands of people are still streaming in to colombo in any way they can. on our drive. here we saw dozens of people on foot with backpacks living around colombo, even people who had been walking from out of colombo. we're also hearing that trains which had been our sort of halted our people, storm rear stations and literally forced ruby employees to put trains on the tracks and bring them into colombo and the one thing they see that they are taking that country back. today's independence day for me. been born in this nation, not mine in 48. because today, we have fought far freedom from the tyranny from the scoundrels,
4:07 pm
from the black gods, from the rascal, the robes, and the li, the politicians who have to run our nation below ground 0. and this is exactly what the government tried so hard to prevent. the thousands of people converging on the capital to urge the president and his government to go. they brought in a curfew, they had to remove it the next day. they essentially wanted the distribution of fuel. what have a little stocks were available, were frozen. i essentially transport public transport was stopped, but people were not giving up. and if you look at the far back around the sherlock and flag flying high, the roger boxer regime, the government of guitar bear, roger fox, and his brother, brother, president, my and the roger proctor was so sort of keen and strong to talk about nationalism. but the people here say, this is the true spirit of reluctance,
4:08 pm
and they want their country back. and l fernandez joins us live now on the foreign hello them and l. so the prime minister says he's willing to stand down. what else came out of that meeting as party later? so, so my hear that it was quite a lot of animated discussion. one of the things that had been discussed was the go the go go talk campaign and essentially cause the go top rodge apart from the president, just step down came up. but the party leaders had pointed out that given the national outcry that people would not be satisfied and they had pushed for even more a centrally to be done. they had recommended that both the president and the prime minister both step down. this didn't go down very well. there was some discussion at which point, but also hearing from the prime minister of is that the prime minister basically offered to step down saying he was willing to resign. only when there was
4:09 pm
a national government that was put in place so as to ensure that the stability sort of been building blocks back to normality to like is not sort of hampered by political instability. now that's not obviously to say how much instability all of this is causing, but again, obviously the prime minister having said that, he is willing to go, but obviously with some strong caveats. so the party leaders must now sort of discuss among themselves in terms of the formation of a national government. and that's where things stand at the moment. now, despite what the ladies have a great aunt, will that actually be enough? protested? well, one of the things the protestors have said, and we heard this sort of repeated again and again out on the streets of colombo to day, is that they're not going to be short change. they're not going to be hoodwinked
4:10 pm
any longer. so as much as this campaign has been waged for over 3 months, where they've been urging the president then the prime minister to go home. and even when the prime minister, at the time of my in the roger box, who is the president's elder brother finally accepted the cause to resign. and when people was still saying that is not enough. and so they kept pushing that one happy with 5 minutes around a victim and seeing someone who had been voted out of parliament, unable to security, the one seed. and now the people are very, very clear, the see if this does not pan out as we have on. and if this is all a sort of an attempt to pull over at their eyes, they're not going to have the date in marching on colombo again, it almost seems that there is a certain political awakening. there is
4:11 pm
a certain awareness among the people that they have kind of put a full stop just to being sort of hoodwinked and strung along by their political leadership. so as much as you might find, prime minister become a senior, a very huge politician over many, many decades, you know, playing word games saying he's willing to resign. but, you know, having sort of caveats on that about, you know, the formation of a national government before he does so people's tolerance levels have pretty much reached 0 point. so they obviously going to watch, they're going to see what happened and going to actually push again if what they have been demanding does not come to fruition. but now you've spent most of the day and i'm a straight among the protest is what's been the mood with demonstrate is i mean with thing, various things, some of them potty in a pool and then others on the street being fired with tea gas. can you talk us
4:12 pm
through the makeup of the group? it's very easy. it's all being sort of unfolding throughout the day to day. as you said, the morning was quite tense because it began with people converging on to lumber this minute despite a host of government attempts to prevent that gathering from cook to, to stopping the issue of fuel to a lot of intimidation. but people came and then there was a stand off in terms of some entrance points about access points to that prisons a visual residence. but basically that 1st of all, you have to guess that then followed with a number of rollins of to guess this morning. in fact, the algebra team came in for it as well. and believe me, it's not a pleasant experience. hundreds and hundreds of students. what basically effected this happened actually when there wasn't a whole sort of, you know,
4:13 pm
attempt at violence. the police just pushed the line back. obviously, very keen to make sure that the progress the don't break through the barricades and into the president's house. ultimately came to nothing because as you can see, those pictures in the pool, all of those protested, just enjoying the fact that they had breached the president's sort of security and done what they said they would do, that they would take the fight right to the president and make him go and the that is exactly what happened in terms of at least physically. he had to be risked away under escort as he fled the oncoming protest. now there was a lot of anger among the testers of young people. a real mix of protest is coming out and it's quite amazing in terms of the way they found their way to columbus. given that there was no public transport. most probably people had
4:14 pm
problems with fuel. i mean they came in that is in laurie's on bicycle on foot. there was one old lady, a grandmother with her 2 grandchildren who had walked through with 20 kilometers. the poor lady was almost at the point of absorption and she sort of fainted by the side of the road and had to be revived. so there were lots of people. these are just kind of rebel young people trying to call me on. this was people from all walks of life across the rainbow of chicago that had come to, you know, put that sort of food stop on the bus regina and the government that has basically brought you long to do it. to me gently, a dynamic situation. we really appreciate you giving us that update. michelle fernandez, live for us in columbia. thank you. let's take a closer look now at the roger pucks of family, which is dominated politics in july and for 20 years main to reggie park. so the current president's brother came to power as president in 2005 and the country for

in the past. so ideal that they know, unless he resigned and now you know, goes away, the purpose campaign will continue and it might end up in a black box. i'm not like the piece for purpose that at a right now, it might end up in the black box total away that black box. my view is that he should immediately step down and allow the auditors to leave their own government right now. we haven't actually seen or heard from the president today. what is the alternative to a roger packs a government billing stand for the cost to do with the current actually employee, the speaker of why the money best that you came close today. but you have to leave and figure out in finding one, which is simply a simple, it may do,

4:36 pm
a share. twitter initially refused 5 accepted it a week later on may 13th musk amounts. the offer was on hold until he had seen a report on spam and frank accounts on the platform. and on friday he called off the deal accusing twitter of breaching the terms of the agreement. the company says he will now so musk to make sure the deal goes ahead. for more on this, let's bring him, tim hubbard, who is an assistant professor at the university of notre, where he is. research focuses on strategic leadership. he joins us from indiana. tim, thanks so much for being on this news. our web same mask. thank you so much. you're welcome. we've seen mascot m, what he's like at the helm of 2 other major companies. he owns tesla and space eggs . so what can we make of this business decision to pull out of buying twitter whether you've we stand back and we think about what elan mosque is trying to do in terms of business and humanity. i think he's trying to push the world forward and with twitter, i think he saw a different avenue to do that in terms of discourse and public, you know,
4:37 pm
public policy and trying to understand how people communicate with each other. but i think in the end he's gonna be able to go back to these technical companies, specifically tesla and space acts where they're engineering problems. and it's a little bit different management style than he would have had to deal with at twitter. one of the broader ramifications of this mask in any future business ventures. i think one thing that we have to keep in mind is that he is the type of person that can change directions very quickly. we've seen that in as business practices, both the tesla ended and twitter where he tried to take over obviously i think that he's always going to kind of have that where he's going to get interested in something and go down that path a little bit. but he'll always kind of come back to the core of what he's trying to do. i think twitter is just the latest example of that. and so any future deals i think are always going to be viewed in this light. where if the he has
4:38 pm
a credible offer for something, everybody's going to stand back and go, is he actually going to follow through a 3rd? or is he going to dabble in this idea and kind of rail markets up and then go back to what he's interested in actually doing as someone who's research focuses on strategic leadership. what do you think that says about his leadership qualities? i think it makes it a little bit tough in terms of trying to work with investors. he brought a lot of people on to the twitter deal, a diverse group of investors. and so now he's got strained relationships with all these people that he's tried to work with in order to put this deal together. and so from a leadership perspective, within the companies, i don't think it changes very much, but it definitely changes the way that he approaches working with outside investors, outside stakeholders and companies that he might be interested in the future. what do things next? do you think mosque is prepared to face a protracted legal battle with theresa? unfortunately, i do. i think that
4:39 pm
a legal battle is almost guaranteed. and the problem there is that he's going to then have his attention divided again, and he kind of walked down that path anyway, when he was thinking about buying twitter, you know, he's already running test lance basic. so he's got a 100000 employees, approximately between the 2. and so if you add on twitter, it's that much more management to handle. in this case, if you get sued, he's still going to have to give that attention to twitter just in the form of a law suit. and so his management attention is going to definitely have to drift away. unfortunately, from the 2 core businesses that he's running. and so he tried to buy twitter and that was going to take his time away anyway. want to step in and say, okay, we and i can actually get the benefit of owning twitter, but you're going to be involved in all of these legal battles that are going to come about. it's just going to be that much more challenging for him. tim, we've just been playing vision of ala mass going and pennies daily business, dancing on stage,
4:40 pm
and the like at test their events. what is his colorful characters say about his leadership style? i think the colorful character actually enables him to do a little bit more unorthodox. things in terms of how he manages his company. so for example, he can be the type that can get angry in a meeting because it kind of seems normal with the personification that he's kind of built. and the, the way that he leads. and so, as he's diving into these very technical problems and answering questions and trying to make decisions with people, he always has the ability to kind of go in any direction he wants. and there's benefits to that. and then there's drawbacks to that benefits. you know, you can change on a dime how you wanna, they wanna approach business now you want to manage, but at the same time, employees never quite know how he's going to react of things. and so, as far as i understand of he, he does have that dual thing where some employees love it, in terms of he can, they can, you know, take risks and try different things. but at the same time,

some employees kind of get a little bit of disturbed if you will, by just how unpredictable he can be. he was focusing on social media and it does have a, a role to play, i guess, in society, but also focusing on something like electric cars is also important to you think that sort of says a lot about where he's putting his energy now going forward. yeah, i think if you stand back and you think about the legacy of eli musk, ah, he is one of those types of people that can change the world than that could be in terms of electric cars. it could be in terms of getting, you know, humans to mars and greater involvement and space. he also, at the same time, i is able to, you know, take on these grand challenges in the food stamps. and we think about his legacy. i think his legacy is going to be that i dont think twitter ever actually fit into that legacy to me. it always seemed like a distraction. something that he was going to do because he was interested in it
4:42 pm
and he was frustrated with twitter. but if you stand back anything about what we hope his legacy is going to be, i think it's going to be running some of these grand challenges and trying to tackle things that are going to help humanity more broadly. what can we really appreciate your insights and what is a very complex man, tim habit, the assistant professor at the university of nature. don, thank you very much. thank you very much. moving on now, and russia has vetoed a resolution of un security council that sought to extend a deliveries to syrians in the last rebel controlled northwest region. the u. n. is wanting, closing the carto through the bab l, how a border crossing could be catastrophic and diplomatic. and it's a james phase has more now from the united nations for tpc via keep my eye as things stand. this may end up being the last shipment of humanitarian aid, food and medicine from turkey into northwest syria. i think he's incorporated in

4:44 pm
. if someone proposes our draft for the 2nd time, why not? if not, if not, i'm say, i think that the, the pages over. so he asked the u. s. ambassador with the russians, unwilling to compromise. will she have to back down and accept the russian proposal . now that would be very humiliating for you, but it would be better than nothing, wouldn't it? his resolution was nothing. ah, we got 99 percent of the way there with the russians. we gave them 99 percent. they admitted they got 99 percent and they are holding out for one percent to continue to give support to the syrian regime. obviously tensions around the council table of increased because of the ongoing war in ukraine. but this is about more than security council, theater and drama. it's about millions of syrians, their lives at risk from starvation or lack of medical treatment. james bays al jazeera at the united nations. washington d. c has had one of the most polluted rivers in the us for quite some time now. and
