6:02 pm
the great facade you see behind me, you notice the architecture, it goes back many, many decades. and this was the sight of that massive sea of people who overran this property. seeing the exit of president gore talbot raj boxer on friday. now obviously he has to resign officially, but for the protest movement that called for him to step down, this has been a victory and for more sure lumpkins that are here. they said they're not going to lose an opportunity to see how their leaders lived. this is our tax money, so i'm here because of the out. so what kind of things been done for our tax money? that's actually what i'm here is the maximum or just shoot, understand the part of people and the sheer number of people trying to get in to see the president's house is posing a real problem. those who are part of the protest campaign who are still trying to control some of the crowds are urging people to be careful. there is structural
6:03 pm
damage, obviously, a very all property and just cannot handle the sheer numbers of climbing up the staircase. there has been structurally shoes, so that's posing a very rare problem and the danger and this obviously the swimming pool at the president's house on the water looking very much. 2 worse for the wear, but those iconic pictures of people are diving into this right after the protest is essentially over at this residence. now president go tabio roger boxer is reported to have been evacuated to safety before the protest says actually got into the property. we still haven't seen any signs of him other than to hear the statement that he has indicated he is willing and able, and willing on his resignation. on the 13th of july, was talking with his story. let's bring in bravado fonseca is a senior va, her, the center for policy alternatives. she joins

a sly for from colombo. as you may have heard the incredible scene some with inside the presidential residence. what does all of this say? do you think about trust overrule is for like, is ruling political elise a well, what's happening the last few weeks i actually raises a lot of questions in terms of the confidence people having to politically eat and the, the minds of the people have been for changing the political culture. so what happened yesterday, the majors and the reporting that you to see shows and save numbers, cans and thousands of people just descended in colombo with a clear demand and they wanted to see a change. and it speaks to a very, very lower level of trust and confidence in the ruling elite and a clear demand that there has to be changing sri lanka. of course,
6:05 pm
talking about change. we've got the president saying at least in theory, he's willing to go to the point minister saying something similar, where does the country go from? here was so, so the president and the prime minister said they will resign. they have yet to handing various ignition letters. so this is, there really are quite worried that the progress have been very clear read that the minds yesterday, the numbers that he's sending kilometer also in different parts of sri lanka, was very here. it's months long for this, for the resignation of ward the price again and the prime minister. it is unfortunate that the board have really dragged these resignation process using different excuse, says, and now the president says you want to resign on the 13th, which is a long way off in terms of the different things that could transpire. so really we're looking to, i'm looking at options of
6:06 pm
a political piece will transition if both of them resign to speak them becomes acting unprecedented. partying then chooses that nextiva, which has to happen in 30 days, so days at clear process prided in the constitution. but what's most urgent and immediate ease or the nation of the president and the prime minister? of course, all of this is the culmination of many, many months or protests. of course we've seen for kilometer petra cues, food shortages, a reminder that corruption and mismanagement, of course, have consequences. but how my, all of this on rest affects the possibility of this much needed bail out from the international monetary fund. so you're quite right, it's been months long, hard shoots feeds by people and these hardships resulted in the press is starting in march. so the progress had been there for several months and really very much we sure did the majors of people's lives staying in long lines,
6:07 pm
all of the speeds to the dire situation in the country. now, in the face of it, and that's lounging because she's younger, doesn't have sufficient funds and foreign research. she longer has had to look to international actors, including the i, m, f and the i m. if has here few weeks ago, there's been negotiations and one all said there kennedy some form of bailout package that the government and i am if can agree to. but for that we need political stability. and that's the problem. at this moment we don't have the political stability required for these kind of assistance to come through. i am if it's not the only an avenue their hours are this that the government has be, go see, a sion, india has come to sri lankan. so there are multiple avenues, but for all of this we require political stability and urgent political
6:08 pm
stability. and without that, we're not going to get much assistance or just disturb, delving into something emotion thereabouts, of regional support. particularly india was relationship in life between the modem, administration and swollen cur, in recent years. well, in the recent couple of months, i can say that the indian government has come to the free lunch and the sri lankan . they have given her credit lines, they've given very much of humanitarian assistance and that has come through so we must actually of knowledge the fact that india and a few others have provided very urgent assistance on. but of course, there are questions as to why course these assistance comes out. i mean, there are reports and criticism that this will affect the some relate to your sri lanka. china is also one that we cannot ignore. so the geopolitics country.
6:09 pm
ah, but we need to recognize the sri lanka is in a situation where we require a lot of assistance and we will have to negotiate whatever conditions that i am horse ensure that it's in the best interest of sri lankan sri lanka. but again, i come back to this point who is to negotiate from the sri lankan site. and for that we need clarity. and we need leadership from the government or 3 lanka for body fonts like a great to have you on the show body from psycho senior research or the center for policy alternatives live in columbia. thank you. that at least 14 people have been killed in the shooting in south africa line. others have been injured in taken to hospital police say a group of gunman open far on patrons. inside a bob in the johannesburg suburb of sweater, catcher, lopez. what a yan has the latest overwhelming pain as families our call to identify their relatives. it was after

6:11 pm
a hugely divisive issue in south africa. one of the most contentious reform proposals is the firearms control act, which was stop people from legally owning a gun. for self defense purposes, support to say fewer guns would lead to less crime, but critics are pushing back. they argue civilians need license weapons to defend themselves. especially with arising crime rate and an overwhelmed police force. on the $6000.00 people were killed in the 1st 3 months of this year in south africa. please say most violent crimes are the worst they've recorded in the last 5 years. little kirsten is a non violent activist, the director of gun free south africa. she joined us live from cape town. thanks for being part of the show. of course, every time we talk about gun crime like this in south africa, we often know very little about the kind of people involved. and in this case, so many of the victims in this shooting and so, and so do you have any more information?
6:12 pm
hello me. huh. yes, the packing of gun violence in southern africa follows that of most other countries that have high levels of gun violence. and that gives the t distinguishing features, it is usually young black men, between the age of $15.29 young men, often living in metropolitan areas, but under resourced areas, often with jobs and limited education, that is your typical kind of profile, of your gun victim. so for example, in our homicide data, for of the 23 people shot and killed daily in this country, 20 of them are young men. it's important to add that the perpetrators are also young men in that age group. in south africa, usually going up to sort of maybe 5 late thirties, but that's what gun violence looks like in this country. what's worrying is
6:13 pm
a really new pattern emerging of what we coding multiple killings. this has, this has not been the pattern of gun violence in our country, but we've seen this shift in the last 18 months to year. and at the moment, i guess it's not sufficient data to say, is this a new trend? but it says me very wiring and now on the south africa log out of the ship is allowed for self. defense referred a very, very similar argument, bay to the united states time and time again. where are we in the debate over gums in south africa. okay. so as in the us, it's highly contested. we're a secular society with a strong attachment to guidance in some sectors of our society. what we've seen is that when, when south africa brought in a new gun rose in 2000,
6:14 pm
we saw a 50 percent reduction in candidates in this country. and over the last 10 years, because of this kind of proliferation of band is coming into our society, into legal hams. are we really seeing a year on here increase in gun homicides? we are one of the countries that allows, but currently under our current can rule applying for a weapon for self defense, it's legitimate and with many other countries, things like hunting, sports, shooting and collecting. however, right now on the table is an amendment bull which ominous of police brought up towards the middle of last year for public comment. and it repeals that section of the law which allows guns for self defense. we know that majority of countries, in fact, over 62 percent of countries across the world do not allow hand gun ownership for
6:15 pm
self defense. it is not seen as a legitimate reason for opening a gun. and south africa is wanting to move in that direction. a given the high numbers of violent crimes in the countries we've heard repeatedly from security companies in south africa that they need the guns to, to essentially the work of the police because the police are not doing their job. certainly we have, we have high numbers of private security, but all of the data shows that civilians having hand guns for self defense increases the risk of for things like suicide in the home main killing of a female policy while some go francis absolutely no evidence certainly not in this kind of plan, we haven't seen it elsewhere in the world that having a gun for self defense makes you say, but the evidence shows otherwise. and in fact, there's just been a big robbery, homicide studies done in south africa. and it shows that when there's
6:16 pm
a home invasion, if there's a gun presence, just the presence of a gun increases the risk for the escalation of violence and serious injury and day . so the conversation needs to shift away from this need your response that guns are the solution, they are not the solution. we need to be talking to god with communities who most of them don't have legal or illegal. what are people living in high crime levels? what are they doing? they getting involved in community police forums, community safety forums in st. petroleum. we have to shut the conversation away from seeing some hard way as the solution when in fact, we know it only increases gun days. del kirsten director of gun free south africa. thank you. thanks me. plenty more head on the news. al including

everyone on this list so far by any means a household name, but some of them will be there to gain the leverage for cabinet positions under whoever is elected as leader and british prime minister. as you mentioned sunday morning, penny morgan's, i was the latest to announce her candidacy. she released the video kind of slick candidacy video. rather like rashid soon acts, she's actually out to change that exit feature to claim of convicted south african murder, oscar pastorius, and celebrating after a race at the london olympics. so she's, she's changed that she'll, so i had an appeal to move on from the sort of personality politics of bars. johnson that we talked about in our report on saturday, there was a saw j. jarvis, the former house secretary, whose resignation, how to spark the the, the master resignations that lead subarus johnson resigning as prime minister. also, as we mentioned at richie su, knock, he's,

exchequer, and he took over just before the current of ours, pandemic and schemes such as the fellers game of left the u. k. i with the biggest borrowing levels since the 2nd world role. and with that, borrowing is let them exposed to inflation. his and strategy for dealing with that has been to raise taxes and seems to be saying that he will continue to do that as a leader of the conservative party. now that's something conservatives are usually allergic to, and in fact, many of his rivals are saying they will lower taxes and trying kickstart the economy. that's way. so because incentive policy may decide if the electro want someone who's being frank and saying, okay, we've got to be responsible, get some tax revenue in all will, i won't a candidate who saying i will put money in your pocket right now. there are a few other issues that are coming out of soil braverman saying that so the u. k.

6:37 pm
florence louis reports. even before the 1st ballot was cast, many political commentators have been predicting victory for the ruling liberal democratic party or l. d. p. it's ruled japan almost without interruption since the end of the 2nd world war. it enters the poles with high approval rating, and a fragmented opposition is thought to offer little competition. these polls take place just 2 days after former prime minister shins obey was assassinated, inara city, while campaigning, abbe, who was a member of the lower house and head of the r d. p, 's largest faction, still wielded considerable influence. and his assassination may result in sympathy votes for the party. i think our bay has thought a lot about this country, and i hope this election can make his efforts worth while to me. to renew though,
6:38 pm
there may be more people had been fought for the liberal democratic party of the assassination was a shocking incident. so i think people have many thoughts, but i hope they can vote based on their own decision. a surge of support will help prime minister for me. okay. she does strengthen his grip on power. it may even see the l d p, and his junior coalition partner commis, to controlling 2 thirds of parliament, which would allow them to take the 1st steps in amending the constitution. one of our, these goals had been to revise the country's pacifist constitution, which forbids japan's offensive military capabilities. meanwhile, the suspect in the murder of obey has been handed over to prosecutors inara, where he will likely be detained and questioned before being charged. police have acknowledged, there were security flaws in friday's incident and have promised a thorough investigation. florence li al jazeera michael pony has more from tokyo,
6:39 pm
in terms of the investigation, not too much has come out from official sources today. i think that this is, can probably be attributed to the fact that today is you know, election day here in japan. and so it's, it's probably the, the authorities don't want to make any big announcements that could be now that could get them accused of, of doing some sort of election interference or something of that nature. so from the authorities, it's been a pretty quiet day actually, there may be an effect. and in fact, this is kind of the big question that, that all observers have been sort of speculating about. so in the year 1980 there was a prime minister named mossey. oh she oh, hera who had a massive heart attack and died 10 days before a major general election. and in that case, although this, you know, 40 years ago, there was a master sympathy vote that benefited the ruling party. and so observers are
6:40 pm
wondering, well is, are we going to see something of the same thing happen in this case with a murder a couple of days ago. for example, will people who became concerned that this was an attack on democracy? well, that sort of motivate more people, a higher of voter turnout rate, so we're going to be getting those answers pretty shortly. and if it turns out to be a major victory for the ruling party, they were heading towards victor anyway. but a bigger victory for the ruling party, then this will be something that will very much stabilize the food milky sheet administration and help him. some protest is in the chinese city of gen. drew say that they were injured by heavy handed security personnel. they were protesting against the freezing of their deposits by 3 rural banks. the banks locked access to accounts and a pull saying and had to do with the systems upgrade. customers say they haven't heard anything since the banks under investigation for illegal fundraising.
