a fitness. the cut on circumstances are extremely difficult. this is a truth. why we should all work together all of us in order to avoid falling into the abyss. we have to rely on our mile in our harness and rally around iraq and the iraqi people will not. for our own narrow interests left, everyone should bear responsibility, political parties from the political class, social forces, and all other in france. we have to say to everyone, everyone should bear the responsibility every one should behave in a call on it wisely. and with a long side take him for the sake of iraq. iraq is

throughout the past 2 years to sort these problems calmly, long live iraq to a nation for us. and for our children, the lena with the usa be upon you was saddam already be rocky prime minister. speaking her a dosage a barrier correspondent and bug joins gonna dos before we talk about the demonstrations are still ongoing in partners. talk about what the prime minister ought to say in the there was an appeal versus see a dialogue. he's perhaps offering an opportunity to many political groups including outsider, to come on. let's sit down and talk certainly this is very much a plea from an outgoing prime minister who has been in power since may of 2020. he really has had one of the most difficult positions in this country since the fall of saddam hussein must suffer academy, a form intelligence official in iraq was appointed as prime minister in may of 2020
5:06 pm
at a time when it really protests like this one that we're seeing now we're very much happening prior to his appointment, and he is now taking this opportunity to call for calm and unity. and he said, and patience is important. and he urged the demonstrators as security forces not to be drawn into confrontation with one another. and that to respect state institutions, and this is a man who has had a very close relationship with all the different parties, including the united states. see had a visit, a from the u. s. president in 2020 in may when he was appointed. and he also has been to washington as well, and he's also got ties to the radian officials into iran. he seemed to be the ideal choice at the time. but now it's proving to be very much a different case because he's been in the interim prime minister since the lectures will help here in october of last year. and there hasn't been any progress made despite the fact that that there has been a election,
5:07 pm
which is what the demonstrators have been asking for this morning. and we heard from the various officials also urging carmen restraint. what is significant now is that the iraqi prime minister urging the demonstrators and security forces to maintain a level head and not to let the situation escalate further, because that really would not be in the best interests of anyone involved other calls dall. so, you know, earlier in the day we sol skirmishes between security forces and, and some demonstrators, some injured around about a 120 outside of the green zone. but generally, the protest is hub being loud and boisterous. but there's been no damage to state property. how long do think these demonstrations are going to continue inside the parliament building, which is what we can see right now? well, certainly as i'm sure you can see from the pictures these people are there to stay . i spoke to some of the demonstrators earlier when we were inside and they said we
5:08 pm
want a government free from corruption. they are followers of the powerful a shia cleric and politician plug or else other. and they have been a following him since he announced last month that he was withdrawing from the political process because of corruption allegations he had. and he also asked 73 of his m p. 's in parliament to leave their posts as well, which is why we're seeing the events unfold. now, they supporters, the southern are saying that they want ab government free from corruption. and this is the 1st time we've seen demonstrators from one specific background and also with the backing of a very influential person in iraqi politics. and from what the scenes were seeing earlier today, and i'm sure you're seeing them now as well. these protestors are actually making themselves very comfortable in the parliament building. we saw many of the men taking a nap in various air condition rooms of the building. and we also saw the security officers from the parliament really standing by and allowing to do so without any
5:09 pm
a confrontation between the 2 sides. there is a sense that nobody wants to see that happen and the demonstrators have said they will follow with federal southern till the end, as long as they're needed to stay in that building. they will do so. we've seen thousands of people going into that building and really it is completely full. the last time we left about an hour or so ago, it was full of people and it was just not safe to stay in there anymore. but those demonstrators have insist that they will continue until their demands are met. whether or not there are behind closed door and negotiations going on as we speak remains to be seen. but what we've heard from the iraqi prime ministers certainly invitation that it is very, very significant. these developments, this is again, the 2nd time the demonstrators have entered this building since last week. and it is very much a sense now that they will stay until there is some kind of a resolution. now what that will look like? nobody knows at the moment because of course, the raining backs. groups have said that they want their own person to be appointed
5:10 pm
as prime minister, which is what the federal se said, who's opposed to and these demonstrators have said there is absolutely no way they would accept any candidate that is affiliated with maria malak. he, he's a former prime minister who was in power from 2006 until 2014. and he's very much known as one of the most corrupt politician. according to the protesters, there were a chanting against him inside that the parliament building. he was the 1st prime minister elected in iraq after the fall of saddam hussein in 2003 after they had a referendum on a constitution in 2005. so he's really well known. he served 2 terms and they're very much of a prominent figure in this country, and now he wants to come back into that their political field. and that is what the problem is. now we know that most other us other is not a fan of him. and this appears to be another risk that we're seeing on fault on the streets of baghdad. dawson barry that force in baghdad. thank you sidon,

i'll coline in the middle east. i missed focusing on the raw, come to follow the arab center, washington dc. he explains why the popular movement has been taking place doesn't come as a surprise to him. a lot of the discourses or the forms of discourses in the cards that tries to exploit and the iraqi society are very popular ideas and parts and principles and values that iraqi people or the new iraqi citizens share across the spectrum. and that is non interventionism and limit to rain and intervention is a limit to western mention, ism, or other regional interventionism. nationalism is a very popular discourse across the world and not just in iraq and reform for the past few years is as the major discourse or rhetoric the father has been heavily relying on, especially since 2016 up until today. reform is a major idea that a lot of the new rockies,
5:12 pm
especially since october 2019. this is the thing that really catches the hearts in the mornings of iraq voters or non participants in the electro or the system. so father might find the power vacuum and thoughts and ideas. a lot of we're doing the rockies would like to hear from their political or religious leaders. you would notice that most of the she or prominent she political leaders and the iraqi part of them have very direct affiliations or associations or connections with iran, proxy interest and iraq. so it's a very good opportunity for others to exploit to these ideas, to gather the support across the spectrum in iraq and not just within the subjects movement. however, there has been a very rising political consciousness amongst the iraq youth since the october 21, 900 for this movement as previously mentioned. and this is why we noticed
5:13 pm
a very low voter turnout. this is why we're noticing an increasing intensity. and this interesting political rivalry between the coordination of framework and the address movement, which is very far away from the interests of the ordinary iraqi citizens. both equally both be the people who voted and the people who boy of the last connections . 16 ships loaded with ukrainian grain are ready to depart from odessa for the 1st time since russia invaded in february, more weight and corners being harvested while the war continues. but that doesn't come without problems. these pictures show feel burning in the car key region near the front lines. farmers are accusing russia of shelling the area. john andrew has more on the shipments from the port city of a desa. are those ships are still in the harbor? were still waiting for the go ahead were told the 16 or 17 ships have been loaded up with grain and that they are ready to go as soon as they get the okay. i have an
