shore. the drills include long range live ammunition shooting into the taiwan straits. china has warned all vessels to avoid the area for 72 hours. nearly half the global contain of flight passes through this waterway every year. and china's foreign ministry has addressed policies trip to ty one. it's accused washington of staring up, trouble in the region. to me make wash, hooking that said apple high to the u. s. is the biggest saboteur of peace in the taiwan strait and the biggest troublemaker of regional stability issues. that is the asia indo pacific strategy that is highly confrontational and dangerous. it shows the hypocrisy and double standards of the united states of the international rules and of china does not resist us, recklessness and irresponsibility, and lack of rationality than respect for sovereignty and territorial integrity. this principle of international relations will just become empty words, separatists and extremists will only redouble their baldness,

drills were being carried out in 6 exclusion zone. surrounding taiwan and its population of 23000000 people and the precision strikes had been conducted and achieve the expected results. there's also lots upon verified video that circulating on social media showing a rockets being fired from china in the direction of taiwan. it's. i want also said that had to chase away an air craft as well as a war ships that had crossed over the median line. this is an unofficial board which is generally seen to prevents any possible mishaps from either side. and they did say that they expected the reaction to be greater than anything that we've seen in recent years. but china says the us is the provocateur and urged it to immediately recognize the one china principal for the sake of security in the region. all right, let's bring in deviate palin. who is the international editor of ty, one place?
1:06 pm
she joins us on skype from ty, page of your thanks so much for being on the program. china has been threatening military jails for some time now and it's a camera reality. how is taiwan reacting? look and leave. you go out on the streets, its businesses, usual people here and i want are used to china, threatening these military drills, doing these military prop provocations that happens. every time a high level dignitary comes to tie want especially someone in the position equivalent to nancy pelosi, but this time it seems that it has caught hit much closer to home. and so many ways for, for one thing, it's usually time to just touches the edges of the territorial borders of ty, one. now it seems that they are encouraged, these incursions are going right into territorial waters or concern of course into air space. if you go out on the street, you think ok, well people are just taking it in their stride. but if you look at a little bit deeper and listen to the chapter here, you'll realize there's
1:07 pm
a sense of anxiety here. for instance, the number one app download at the moment is the one that tells you where the bomb shelters are here in tie. one, almost a lot of there are lot of bomb shelters inside one. there's a lot of emergency areas here because taiwan has lifted the spectre of china invading for decades. now. also, people are also trending on social media at the moment is where the safest places to hide it. should there be an invasion. so while it seems like people are getting on with their daily lives, there is that sense that people are thinking about what it, what if this actually goes further? and then there's the fact that they like will most likely be disrupted by these military drills because it amounts to what the ministry of defense is calling a blockade. we're shipping routes and air routes are all now being blocked off, which means that flights are being cancelled. you know,
1:08 pm
routes and travel is being disrupted. so while people are watching this cautiously and, and then on the outside it, you know, it feels like they are used to it in the end, just standing back observing. there is also that knowledge that this is far more than what was expected in previous times. when china had blob, those threats, and the kind of provocation that we've seen in the past. indeed, well, we really appreciate your inside stevie a good pile in taipei. thank you. ty, ones defense ministry says it's used flay is to drive away drones, flying over one of its islands, close to the mainland. the incident happened in the strife between taiwan and china . there are a number of taiwanese islands close to china's mainland than ty. one kenman is this set of islands overflowing by the drones. the 1950s it was shelled by china. the u . s. considered using nuclear weapons to protect it. she u. e is part of the cayman islands. that's the chinese mainland in the back of the

photo there, you can see how close it is. china's warned ships to avoid the area for the next 7 to 2 hours, as we mentioned because of courts like she on man, half the world's annual shipping goes through this area to break it down for us. let's bring in winds. he song, who is a specialist in china. taiwan relations with the australian national universities tie one studies program. he joins us from at tie pe, thank you so much for being on the program. we've been talking about the island of taiwan, but for our international audience took us through the regional dimensions of this area. we just showed that map. but what happens if china encroaches further on these areas? like you said, this is the part of the world near our straight council. more or less half the war was maritime commerce. so investment is certainly very critical of the land of communication. chuck point in a way, which is also why it's raising
1:10 pm
a lot of interest as well as concern by other countries in the region. at this point though, i think the fact that china designates it's very ask for me, treat real in this particular way, may potentially be buying the reassurance. however, ironic miss sound because from me, the way i read it is the china is doing the ministry drill in those areas trio, which of a lot with paro towers, territorial waters. precisely because china is more about diplomatic messaging more so then preparing for the next round of major mitre offensive. and their way to think about it is that they are trying to counter new people, maddy messed up, nicolo this trip, the taiwan, the logic. yes. hello is the being such a senior official building taiwan some how, how legit, demises, and strength and power and claim to be a sole run state actor. and so china now is trying to counter that effect,
1:11 pm
but showing no town is not a sober, it's the actor. i'm going to show you by saying, i'm going to do me to read grills in taiwan territorial waters. i'm going to ban maritime shipping, doing all throughout town was territorial waters as well. just to show that one does not have true autonomy to govern those places. and therefore it's going to be listed at night and we can pounds claim to its own autonomy and self confidence as well. so in that sense, that very precise calibration of that message may makes it sound like a people magic outright military move. you mentioned some of the economic implications of this and i do want to get to that in a little later. but firstly, you're talking about this concept effectively of china not losing face, that's a really important concept for them. so what moves are we likely to say next from by jane? i think for me to drill in around how,
1:12 pm
why is likely you have more military maneuvers crossing power media allies. maybe possibly some kind of new declare ration by china about expanding it's a d id. identification though, just to further show the claim over what i want these at, they don't look too much space. and these are the things we can expect. but at the end of the day, i think that china is going to have its power transmission moment a few months now from now and stability is really paramount at this point. i don't think presence, she really wants to introduce any real risk the war because that's kind of broken into alisha lockers, instability that could create complication for reelection. yes. and speaking of that instability just quickly before we let you go, talk us through some of the economic ramifications to all of this in the potential disruption to the supply chain. given the area that. busy talking about, you know, particularly after the likes of coven, and then also the ukraine war. this is obviously something that china will be
1:13 pm
keeping in mind. yes, i think so, especially things. the era concern, not just one, but also countries like self korea depends on china and softer and how why especially account for most the world's leading semiconductor chip production, which is something that's necessary power l. 21st century tech economy. so we're trying to really go beyond this real 4 days for this exercise. it's going to bring true disruption to many countries and i've been china will be wise to limit the damage with us with this particular show, of course, to not create too many enemies, then you have to yes. so we will be watching very closely. we appreciate your analysis there when t song from the strongly national universities taiwan studies program. thank you. thank you for having me. and in the bank of nancy pelosi, taiwan trip. foreign ministers from the region have expressed concern about the possibility of open conflict between major powers. delegates from the 10 menda,

the warfare where the military has escalated its response, particularly in rural areas where there's also frequent internet blackouts, more than 11000 people have been detained. more than 2000 people have been killed off it quite clear that the audience let peace plan that was agreed to by the june in april last year is not working. and that's the reason why the foreign minister of niana wasn't invited to argue. now was instead invited to send a non political representatives that they had declined to do so. now what's not here though is how to move forward on audience, on, on me. and that doesn't seem to be any sort of unity. there are some calls for our the and to engage with the national unity government. that's the shadow, civilian government, all me and my but doesn't seem to be taking any concrete steps towards that direction. and of course, what complicating matters is the level of support that now is getting from the authoritarian powered china and russia. and china and russia made

in $36.00. he's in the know, it grew from 13 percent in 2017 to 36 present. this c cover in the central part has increased to a similar degree. the southern region lost some coral covered though, due to a crown of thorns staff fish outbreak. see stars fade on and to plate waste building carl scientists say despite its resilience, the re for main vulnerable to bleaching, caused by solar radiation. for more on this, let's bring in poll, had a fee. he is the chief executive officer at the sterling institute of marine 5. it joins us from townsville in the state of queensland. thanks so much for being on this news. our poll, we so often hear bad things out. maryland. it's great to speak to a fellow of the we so often hear bad news about the impacts of climate change. but what's happening in that great barry rate for once it's something positive obey it's small. tell us a little bit more about what you've discovered. now look, so this year's report certainly gives us some good news,
1:45 pm
which is great. as you said in your intro, we've had, we are now experiencing coral cover level levels that are that rival what we saw back in the eighty's. so names has a long term monitoring record for the great barrier reef and it goes back almost 40 years. so now it's a fantastic time to come and see the reef because you can see it in the splendor that it, that it exhibited back in the eighty's. so it's pretty impressive. and, you know, a scientists were delighted because it shows that the reef is still very resilient . we've had a couple of really good years for recovery, free of disturbance from the reef is come roaring back. so it's great news and he's great news. and while there were increases though in the north and central pines, as we mentioned, there was a decrease in carl cover in the southern regions. what does that say about the re so the southern reef decrease was relatively small and it was because of an outbreak of kind of foreign starfish, which is a natural predator which can get out of control when certain conditions allow. i
1:46 pm
think more importantly, what we're really saying here is that while there's good news, there's also some not good news in this report. and while the carol cover is similar to what it was in the 1900 age, that should not, people should not believe in any way that that means that the conditions on the race are the same as they were in the 1980s. nothing could be further from the truth. and the reason is because the reef is now subject in any given year to potentially devastating bleaching events cause not by solar radiation. as you said in your intro, specifically by warming oceans, and ocean heat, raves, driven by climate change, that's the number one threat to the reef. we had a bleaching event this year, and luckily it didn't last quite long enough for the corals to die. so a little bit if they can go white, they bleach. but if it goes to long,
1:47 pm
then mortality occurs. they die. and this year we were very lucky just as it was reaching that threshold was walking the tight rope conditions got a little bit better. but in any given year now, the risk could be subject to some pretty severe bleaching events. and so while there's good news, we certainly can't see being really vigilant and doing everything we can to protect the reef in the future. and so what does that mean in terms of doing more in the future we've, there's a bill to write the governments 43 percent emissions reduction target. it's been written into law. it's passed the lower house in australia, but obviously a lot more needs to be done to have this under control. yes. so there's 3 things that really need to be done to protect not only the great berries, but reese around the world that are all facing very similar challenges. the 1st one, as you said, is to get global emissions down in the long term. that's the most important thing
1:48 pm
we can do. the 2nd thing is we absolutely have to give rece the best chance they can to flourish and recover as we're seeing now. so that means everything from protecting them against crowd authority starfish, to improving water quality and so on. the 3rd thing we have to do is we also have to recognize that we're going to have to help them adapt to warming oceans because those warming oceans are here now, and it's only going to get worse. we're already getting, we've already had 4 major bleaching events in the last 6 years. you know, in the eighty's there were never any. well, the difference well poll, we really appreciate your insights. we've just run short of time. thank you so much for break down for us. the hottest, the chief executive officer at the sterling institute of marine science. appreciate your time. thank you. a right wing us talk show host to claims that a school massacre in 2012 was a hugs will soon find out how much money he needs to pay to parents. he lost children in the shooting. alex giant has been sued for libel and it stands to be

for appealing the suspension. watson recently settled over one of 24 lawsuits filed by the boss or therapist, but denies any wrong doing. reading through what the judge, sad, i guess from a legal perspective and a precedent perspective, it makes sense. one thing i will say is the fact that the nfl has the personal conduct policy is something that allows a suspension to happen without it, there could be no suspension period. so i mean, it's better than nothing. but when you look at the damage that watson has been done, i don't think that it's enough. we're way beyond the point of you know it, we're not, this isn't like something like ok, we should take time to build up to the correct amount of punishment for something like this. like it needs to be done. the trial of american basketball star, brittany greiner is expected to come to a close on thursday. it is live outside the courthouse near moscow were closing arguments being heard. the 2 timely pick champion faces up to 10 years in prison.
