writings made him a target of death. threats has been stabbed a literary event in new york state. the indian born author was attacked when a man stormed the stage at the chautauqua institution where he was due to deliver a lecture, a booker prize winning novelist, been a decade in hiding after iran, revolutionary leader, ayatollah khomeini, called for his death over the 1988 to book the satanic verses, the iranian government has since distanced itself from this edict, but of the groups of continued to call for which these assassination people late had described that shock. witnessing the attack, mal human, came and attacked salman rushdie. i thought that he was stabbed about 6 to 8 times before they were able to grab a hold of the perpetrator. and then i was pretty much frozen in my steps and took
12:03 am
quite a few minutes to even just get myself to a seat to sit down because it was just, nobody knew it. still, nobody knew how to react. i mean, there were tons of people that rushed the stage. here is an individual who is so spent decades speaking truth to power. someone who's been out there unafraid. despite the threats that have followed him his entire adult life, it seems. and it happened that a site that is place is very familiar to me, a very tranquil, rural community. notice chautauqua to talk with institution, where the most preeminent speakers and thought leaders and politicians justices. and everyone come together to have the free expression of thought. so this is a place ideal ideally suited for him to be able to speak, and that's what he was attempting to do just in the last hour before he was attacked. oh christians, larry joins us live now from new york. and so kristin festival on new york state

police likely to release any more information about this absolutely. we are expecting an update at any moment from the agency that is in charge of the investigation. the new york state troopers. this is a state law enforcement agency. they were the ones who were on the scene and responded when rusty on stage was attacked by a man he was, as you said about to give a lecture. we know that he was stabbed in the neck last. we heard i after contacting his literary agent, he was in surgery i, he was airlifted from that location to a hospital. so we should have more information about the 75 year old author's condition, very soon as well as more information about the alleged assailant. the man who was seen a jumping on stage and attacking him. what do we know about the attacker,
12:05 am
the person who carried out this stabbing. there has been some footage in some images of him. very little at this time. other than those pictures, no name has been released. no identification has been given a very little speculation as well. people dawn and jump to conclusions and certainly a law enforcement gave only very brief details. up to this point have said very little up to this point. rusty was actually in the area of chautauqua, new york, which is actually quite far from new york city. i in are very remote part of the state at an institute. that is an educational center, a nonprofit educational center and summer resort at host. all sorts of i speakers and talks there he was ironically enough. do to talk about ah,
12:06 am
the united states as a haven for artists and writers in exile and that's something that he i had worked all right. thanks very much kristen. that day we expected to get a bit more information now. new york state police speaking in the attack at the chautauqua institution earlier today. the suspect has been identified as haiti. matar age 24, from fair view, new jersey, or earlier today at approximately 10 47 am. guest speaker, solomon rushdie, age 75, and ralph henry rece age 73, had just arrived on stage at the institution or shortly thereafter. the suspect jumped on the stage and attacked mister rusty, stabbing him at least once in the neck. and at least once in the abdomen, several members of the staff at the institution,
12:07 am
an audience members rushed the suspect and took him to the ground. and shortly thereafter, or trooper who was at the institution, took the suspect into custody with the assistance of chautauqua county sheriff's, deputy. mister rusty was provided medical treatment by a doctor who was in the audience until eames arrived on scene. mister rusty was airlifted to a local trauma center and is still currently undergoing surgery. mr. reese was transported via ambulance to a local hospital and was treated for a facial injury and subsequently released. state police are being assisted by the chautauqua county sheriff's office and the f. b i. in this investigation. we are also working with chautauqua county, da jasons schmidt, who will determine appropriate charges as the investigation continues. and once rou, sir, receive further information regarding the condition of mister rusty. at this time, i would like to have mr. president hill, come to the podium for
12:08 am
a few words. thank you. chautauqua as a community of people of all face and none. and our collective family is holding mr . rusty and mr. reese as well as their family close and prayer at this hour. i want to thank the new york state for police and all the other law, law enforcement personnel who were out chautauqua today and responded within seconds. we're very grateful for their service. o. s. what we experienced at chautauqua today is an incident, unlike anything and are nearly 150 year history. we were founded to bring people together and community to learn and, and doing so great solutions through action to develop and but the meditation which is hiring there from new york state law enforcement, giving us a very brief update on the stabbing all novelist or for salman rushdie,
12:09 am
mainland, the suspect as hardy, my tar 24 years old from new jersey. he and then just have a re, re counting the sequence of events saying that the suspect jumped on stage, stabbed some onrush, the in the neck and the abdomen. a worst, he was then elevated to a local trauma center. he is still undergoing surgery. so he was confirmed to be in surgery several hours ago. he still in surgery and state police are being assisted by the f. b i. and this investigation and listening to all of this chris and slew mean we were just saying chris in the other is very little information. right, so we're just going to actually hear a little bit more from that and young state police continuing with their update on that standing don't have any indication of a motive at this time,
12:10 am
but we are working with the f b i the sheriff's office and we will determine what the cause of this was or what the motor for this attack was yes, there's members of the f, b i here at s p. jamestown and it out in the community helping us with the investigation at this point. excuse me. no that, that they were there that we had met earlier in the year with the institution and there were some high profile events that they requested that a law enforcement presence be there. and luckily we were it's a possibility we'll have to discuss that is the investigation goes along. we are working with the da's office. we are in the process of obtaining search warrants for various items. there was a backpack located at the,
12:11 am
at the scene. there was also electronic devices, so we were working with the da's office to, to obtain search warrants and further the investigation at this point we're, we're assuming he was alone, but we can, you know, we're, we're looking to make sure that that was the case. his his name is 1st name is hardy. h a d i last name is matt tire. m a t a r he's age 24. can. can you answer it? he was there in a day pass or he had a pass to access the grounds. just the way any other patron would have ah, yeah. it's
12:12 am
a really important question. are we assess for every other and what we think the appropriate security level is? and this one was certainly one that we thought was important, which is why we had our state trooper and sheriff presence there. we will assess for each of the events at the institution. what we think the appropriate level of security is. and that's an ongoing process that we do, that we work in concert with local law enforcement. one more. and so we renew from new york state police, updating us on the stabbing of salman rushdie awhile ago. we have the name of the suspect, hardy matar, his age 24 years old. he is from new jersey, and then we just had primary mission, a confirmation of the sequencing of events. he jumped on stage just as mister rushed. he was about to deliver a lecture at stabbing him in the neck and the abdomen. salman rushdie still
12:13 am
undergoing surgery, and so that week he was confirmed means our dri, several hours ago. that is still ongoing. we've had no further information on his condition or how he is handling that surgery. but we also know that state police are being assisted by the f b i in the investigation also very important. but police are saying there is nothing to indicate. there is any particular group or organization behind this. the assumption right now is that the attacker was acting alone. christian salumi has been following their story and she is still with us and her chris an interesting that the f b i would be assisting in this investigation and no specific charges have been determined yet against her hardy. heidi matter. that's right. the i state trooper who was just speaking mentioned that they had seized a backpack and a some electronic devices. they were looking for,
12:14 am
a warrant to be able to search his home. and those devices are, at this point, they are assuming that he acted alone. they don't have reason to believe otherwise . of course, we think back to the fact that in 1988 after his book, the satanic verses was released. and he was widely protested and condemned in several countries for his portrayal of the prophet mohammed. either he was considered blasphemous in how he wrote about the prophet that caused him to go into hiding for 10 years. at one point, a bounty was issued on his head of some $3000000.00. the iranian leader, ayatollah rou, hollow, khomeini, i did declare him, you know, decried his, his work, i'm in, and made an edict for his death. so all of that in the backdrop,
12:15 am
it seemed that he had moved beyond that. he moved around freely in the united states in recent years was often at public advance and seen in public places. but as we just heard, he still had security presence. they are. and luckily for him that they were that they were able to resolve this fairly quickly. so we don't know what the motivation was officially. we don't know, i'm who this person was or who if he acted with any one else, but it appears that he acted alone at this point. and obviously those are all questions and that law enforcement will be looking into. okay, thank you very much. real kristen sumi bring his the latest on that, sorry. and also can bring you a little bit more analysis on, was treated. piracy is the executive vice president of the quincy institute for
12:16 am
responsible save state. crofton presser of middle east politics at georgetown university, joined us via skype, from rest in virginia and treasure. i'm not sure if you had the opportunity to listen to the information which is getting from york state police. but perhaps quite interesting is the age of the suspect. hardy matar, 24 years old, would have been very well. events surrounding some onrush, the publication of his book, the fact or that was issued against him. the subsequent death threats always would have happened before this individual was born. indeed, in fact, he would most likely be born on the same year that the iranian government, essentially, to clear that they are not going to be seeking cell r. she's deaf and they're not going to be 80 anyone else to do. so either it's not a full resending of the fact because the phosphor belongs to the ayatollah cannot be rescinded by the state, according to iranian practices. but they took this distance thing from it,
12:17 am
as part of a pre condition for the iranians and the united kingdom to restore diplomatic relations. and ever since that picture against my rescue seems to have decreased quite significant, but clearly not enough because there's also been other group, as you mentioned already, wrong that have been advocating or is that there's still been elements inside of the iranian state. that nevertheless, are speaking of that as well as if it is still will be part of the volume state policy. he lived in hiding for many years and he had a body guard. the other thing that was mentioned at the press conference just now was that there was a security presence at this event that that was, it was a sheriff and state troopers present present, which is one of the reasons why they were able to apprehend the suspect. and why someone where she was and very swiftly i left it hospital, but does it,
12:18 am
does it surprise you that perhaps this, that they weren't able to prevent this? well again, depending on how serious they took that picture, and if they took it very seriously, well then this is a very serious tenure on their part. but if this was just a routine matter, because at the end of the day he is a famous person. at the end of the day, there has been a fed picture to him in the past. then perhaps all of them ended up having their guards down in a way to perhaps shouldn't have been the case. we don't know the motivation for this attack, the have been some details about the suspect. please also made it clear that they're not sure what prompted this to take place at but i suppose it's difficult to ignore the background and the control is the surrounding someone wished in. also, the timing is, is quite awkward. again, it's impossible to say at this stage because we don't know more,
12:19 am
we have no indications as to whether this person had issued any tweaks on social media or yet left. something to explain why he did this. i committed this crime but, but it does appear unlikely that it is completely disconnected from that picture to larger picture which ranges not just from the original photo against him by i so the whole maybe, but also an expert by other groups later group seeking his destination to to party. thank you very much for joining us on the news hour. thank you. now on the top story, this, our donald trump is suspected of violating the espionage act after the f. b. i c's classified documents from his home while searching the former president's florida estate earlier this week. u. s. federal judges unseeable warrants that authorized the search document. seas included and executive pardon for a major, trump ally,
12:20 am
roger stone, and information on french present. a manual macro on donald trump is suspected of violating the espionage act as well. so let's go live. now. how did your castro in washington at 1st, who tell us more about the espionage act? heidi and you know, what could this all me now for, for donald trump? yeah, this is an act that the federal government takes very seriously a dates back to world war one. and it covers not only spying, as the name would suggest, but also the improper care and handling of sensitive information that may endanger national security in those sections of this act are the ones cited in this now unsealed search warrant of former president. trump's private residence, particularly the search warrant an authorized this search based on the probable
12:21 am
cause. the judges believe that tromp and his 8th may have violated the act in 3 ways, one being unlawfully retaining information that could harm the u. s. national security or help a foreign adversary. secondly, destroying or concealing documents to obstruct government investigations, and finally for the unlawful removal of government records. and it is notable that in the way that these laws are written, negligence alone cannot be an excuse if it is the ticket for these while for these rules to be taught to be violated, trump has said that on his way out the door at the white house, he declared that these documents were declassified. however, that itself may not being of protection for him is in that the espionage act does not specify whether or not these documents have to be classified or declassified. i
12:22 am
should also add the detail that among those materials seized from our logo on monday, there were 11 sets of classified materials for sets marked at the very top secret level of classification, 3 sets at the secret level. these are, it's unclear exactly what they pertain to, but the washington post has reported that they may involve a nuclear weapons information, and the new york times is reporting that some included the special ed says program designation, which is the very top secret level of government classification. information relating to, for example, covert us operations abroad or, or weapons development information that really only the president and perhaps as to top cabinet secretaries captain, the secretary of state and separate crick, terry of defense would have access to. so if indeed, former president trump was handling these documents in his private basement, not a government institution. this could be certainly

a series concerns for the former president. thank you very much in washington. why did your castro ah, firefighters have been called in from across europe to help france battle several major wildfires as the country once again faces this stark reality of rising temperatures. march of the conference has seen weeks of baking heat, compounded with a critical drought creating prime wildfire conditions. more than a 1000 fire fighters of battling a giant blaze in a pine forest. in france's southwestern shiranda region force more than 10000 people to flee volumes and burn through 74 square kilometers of forest since tuesday. further north, the u. k is also sweltering on the extreme heat, with temperatures expected at 36 degrees on saturday. governors formerly declared a drought in parts of southern central in east, in england,
12:24 am
after it's dry as july and almost 90 years. is not as europe has been affected by these extreme conditions. flash trotting during an unusually severe rainy season in sudan has killed at least 50 people. it's also destroyed thousands of homes out there as bonus. myth begins our coverage now with the look at the situation in france, firefighters in southwest france using everything they can lay the hands on to beat back these rapidly spreading fires. 75 square kilometers of the year on region looks like this. drought and extreme temperatures have created an easily combustible mixture. casual navy screwed at the de risk being complicated because the temperatures are going up, and precipitation is dropping firefighters from across europe. these are remaining and have been drafted in to help fight the flames. this is an area that already caught fire caught fire again to the fire fighters to come back and douse the flames. one of the challenges for them is because the temperature is so high and
12:25 am
the ground is so dry. as soon as the water hits the ground, it evaporates. so it takes a lot more water and a lot more effort to put out the flames. the risk of new fires is very severe. according to the local authorities. 10000 people have been evacuated from their homes. bill knows he both, so fires are still active along the edge of the 40 kilometer perimeter. they're advancing little by little so we are trying to keep the same priorities we had at the start. that is to protect that people who've been evacuated and will keep protecting all these homes. villages here know they've had a lucky escape. the signs are everywhere, thanking the fire service for saving their homes. how's it out up? well, the 1st time i've seen a catastrophe like that above all, a catastrophe for the bio diversity. it's an enormous catastrophe. we're not going to have enough forest left. it's really serious, i said, oh oh god, i'm clearing away. burnt trees from the roads so that fire fighters and volunteers
12:26 am
and farm workers can get through and put out as much of the fire as they can. the forests will eventually recover. but as the planet warms, an extreme weather becomes more frequent, it might not be long before flames. licking up these trees again, bernard smith, al jazeera in the huron southwest france. and just this gives you an idea of the current wildfire risk in the region right now. and the areas you see there in dark purple indicate an extreme fire danger. it got a red areas there which suggested a very high or high risk of fine. and the orange shows a moderate risk of fire. we want to focus on that a gas coach, which been suffering from what a u. n. is described as the world's 1st climate change induced famine. but some scientists disagree and blame the crisis on bad land management. for years of consecutive drought have left families in the south struggling to feed themselves,
12:27 am
surviving on locus and boiled leaves, calling to world food program, 1470000 people in the southern grandson region are in need of emergency food assistance. with an estimated 309000 children suffering from acute malnutrition. anecdotal reports from the east african island revealed the staggering numbers of people dying from starvation, with local officials telling of 26 deaths in one day alone. vello mar. hi nina. as a comma, however, is a research fellow at the school of politics, economics, and international relations at university writing. she joins me now. thank you for taking the time to speak to us. what's it like in the south of madagascar right now? the my guess the people that are experiencing a significant problems related to what we call the carrier, it's a phenomenon, it means start to death and,
12:28 am
and it has affected various things in our every, their lives on security, agriculture, environment and event issues related to chamber. so would you say that would you? is it accurate to describe it as a famine? absolutely, it is a time in we have been experiencing this thing of me and then ah, since 1924. 1923. and it's very, it's a recurrent fee. no mean fee the mean and it has been going on for around 30 years. um sometimes people experience i cute starvation between a 3 month and one year and overs would not even m a eat up for 4 months and months of you visited the area
12:29 am
or toll you describe people not being able to eat for months and. and then these reports of, of families surviving on things like locusts and boiled leaves of you. are, you witnessed any of this 1st hand? i haven't been, ah, in that area. but there are people who are moving from south to north because of a starvation and, and currently i'm, it's not only in the southern regional medical card that people are having a hard time finding food to eat. but are people in the eastern region or so experience and we can say not to really funny, but they are starting to experience a lack of food shortage of supply. so what does the future look like
12:30 am
than are we going if we're going to see population movements from the east in the south going into the north? is it going to be one part of madagascar that's like this uninhabited waste land and another part that caesar and it's a growth in its population that puts a lot of strain on resources there. a we can still do something for now. the present is rather clue me, but i think a for we really work together. all of these multi lateral donors to local authorities, the local n, g o c for we work together. we can change the situation, but we must address various problems relating to bad management and bad governance and, and also um, the funding that goes that, that goes directly to medic, s car. many local communities complain about the fact that
12:31 am
some of them haven't seen the results. i thought they did not receive support. it said that very often, only 10 percent of a budget goes to the local community because we spend a lot on overheads on contractors and the latter higher offer contractors. and another problem that we really need to address is the way we solve the issue is the problems we tend to focus more to implement more and short term projects, but instead we should work on the longer term adopt. it says a hold of a system approach because there are various impacts of, uh, dis, carry the family that we are experiencing hunger in security. because people have no food to eat so days till they kill and even girls they,
12:32 am
they might be sold to prostitution because the family needs to eat and to survive. and as the social fabric is really destroyed progressively, because for example, staffers have to leave a family and 5 job as swear in the north. for example, pen, we need to address to tackle the problem on multiple fronts. food security, security, agriculture and farming protection of environment. and even janda, and then we could say the future will be better. all right. thank you very much for bringing that to insight. really appreciate it. i'm a honda, ne, not as a comma hot over to joining us that. thank you very much, mary. i'm the news ally from london also had fly on the program. mexican farmers plead for rain as drought kills that,

12:34 am
some spots. it was their driest july on record. so what that means is the ground is bone dry, and when we do get any large amounts of rain with these standard downpours of that could certainly trigger some flash flooding. okay, back to the here and now we know wildfires burning in the south of france, northern central areas of spain, but we do have a little bit of relief coming with this wave of rain. some bigger downpours though can be found across the balkans, close to the adriatic. see here, the next stop we're going to greece and turkey. no real major change here. some showers never really too far away from is stumble. so we've got to put the threat in there and flooding seems likely as this batch of brain moves from gone a rate through into the ivory coast on saturday, and a number of weather makers crashing in to the western cape. so here comes another one, cape town, looking at wings of 55 kilometers per hour. that's it. that's off susan. ah,

ah ah, i'll come back here with the news. our life from london. look at the main stories. controversial and acclaimed officer mon, rusty. his writings made a mentality of death threats, has been stabbed it. a literary event in new york state. the booker prize winning author was stabbed in the neck and the abdomen. when a man stormed the stage at the chautauqua institution, why were state was due to deliver a lecture, donald trump is suspected of violating espionage act off to the f b. i c's classified documents from his home, searching the former president florida estate. earlier this week. more than
12:37 am
a 1005 fighters of battling a giant blaze in a pine forest in front of southwestern sharon region for more than 10000 people to leave the homes. of farmers in mexico are struggling to keep their herds alive during one of the worst droughts in 3 decades. just 10 percent of dams across the country of full with many seeing levels drop, well below half. drowsy is proving catastrophic to the agricultural industry, particularly for farmers in mexico's north ammonia rapids, joins us live now from mexico city. how much was, is this compared to previous years? well, for starters, miriam, the areas that are being affected by the drought and the water crisis are not just one state in mexico or a single region. really, the moderate to extreme drought conditions are affecting as much as 65 percent of mexico's national territory in the case of northern mexico. these are some of the
12:38 am
dr conditions that the region has seen in the last 30 years. so there is talk of a historic drought. now, just last month in july, the mexican government did declare a state of national emergency over the water crisis. this allowed the federal government to free up some of those federal resources to be allocated to, toward providing water to some of the worst effected areas by this drought. this also allowed the government to order bottle companies like bottling companies like coca cola and some of mexico's national beer brands to limit the amount of water that they're using to limit the amount of water that they're extracting from the ground. specifically in parts of northern mexico, the city of monterey, in the state of nevada. and i think most people would agree is where the crisis is . most is most acute, the water levels at dams around the city that provide water to the city of monterey . a city of 5000000 people that provide water to the state of rebel they own into the surrounding states are well below where they should be when we visited monterey just a few weeks ago. continuing our coverage of the ongoing drought. what we were told
12:39 am
is that many plate people were placing the blame on the weather phenomenon known as linear, which is known to disrupt traditional weather patterns in the case of northern mexico. this is meant that a rainy season that was supposed to begin in may never, never came. and what we're being told by experts is that is being exacerbated by, by climate change. we should add as well. the july, just last month, july was the hottest month recorded in mexico since 1953. so these extreme, he conditions are certainly not doing anything to alleviate the crisis. and is a government thing. and the thing to alleviate is crisis. is there anything i can do about the, the drought which is getting worse? what the mexican government is doing is basically providing water or sending water to the parts of the country, they're most affected by, by drought condition. so in the state of naval they on these, this is met trucks that are carrying water that are providing drinking water and
12:40 am
possible water for people in different neighborhoods. but what we're being told consistently from experts, both in mexico and internationally as this is not a sustainable solution, but the region needs is rain. but when you look at the map of a weather map of north america, when you look at the actual heat index for many parts of the united states in northern mexico, the south western part of the united states, the northwestern part of mexico, you really get a sense for the scale of these drought conditions that really have no regard for national borders and the need for international action to prevent a potential food crisis to go along with the ongoing water crisis. mary, thank you very much. from mexico, switching money wrapping up or thousands of people in northern sudan awaiting our off the heavy rains and flash floods swept through river nile state across the country. floods of killed at least 50 people and also destroyed thousands of homes out there is hipaa. morgan reports now from berber in river nile state. this
