on carry johnson. this is al serra will lie from dough, also coming up the call gorbachev. the man who helped end the cold war, but couldn't say the say that union from collapsing has been laid to rest. politicians in argentina's, now a house of congress hold a special session to condemn the assassination attempt against the vice president. christina fernandez, the kitchen and a new life in the well destroyed pakistan's, devastating floods force, pregnant women and girls to give birth in shelters. ah, well nasa has postponed the launch of it. so ultimate, one moving mission, just hours before it was expected to blast off from the kennedy space center in florida. well, these are live pictures of the nasa rocket on its launch pad. launch was canceled

last week at g to engine problems. well, there are many people today who are going back home disappointed. we don't know when nasa will make the 3rd attempt to send its most powerful rocket ever to the moon's orbit. thousands of spectators, of course disappointed. ah! i mean, a dragon i dragged my wife danya we got we got here yesterday at 7 am. so we've been here quite awhile. we slept on the grass last night just to make sure we had a good slide cuz i can, i was expecting be a saturday will be a lot more people if there are a lot of people. i thought there would be even more. so it's kind of overwhelming that is the big, scrubbed it a did script. we were here on monday for our 48 hours. also described that i'm going to come back on tuesday. we'll allen fisher joins us live from the kennedy space center in florida. so what more do we know about this supported launch?
7:03 pm
well, if there were refueling any sort of fueling the tanks, you go to quin liquid hydrogen liquid oxygen. there was a problem with the liquid hydrogen and the control have the, the famous phrase that no one wants to hear when you're getting ready to launch a rocket. we have a problem though, the engineers tried to fix the problem. they had 3 different goes in the end, they realized that they weren't going to be able to sort it. so they recommended to the launch director that the launch for today be scrubbed. that's exactly what has happened. no nasa have to make the decision when they will go ahead with the launch . there is the possibility. there is a window on monday and a smaller one on tuesday. so maybe it could happen then. but a lot of people are suggesting that what is likely to happen is that the rocket will be we'll back essentially, go back into the workshop. they will look at the weird the problem was and see if it needs to be fixed. if that were to be the case, you then talking about launch somewhere in mid september to edlio october,
7:04 pm
so this could be delayed but only delayed. can nasa are determined the optimist. well, take off at some point in the near future and well head to the moon. and alan wants the reaction. been there then? well, people are very disappointed. a lot of people came out especially to see the launch of the rock. in fact, we were speaking to someone yesterday who came in to town because he was delighted . it was a saturday so that give him the chance to see the launch and a note of like last monday when it was a work day. and he was hoping that the rocket would take off and clearly it's not going to happen today. so he'll be back at what can better disappointed that he didn't see that rocket law. and so many people who decided that they were going to make a deal of this, it's a holiday weekend here in the united states. some people came to florida, specifically for this launch. they were hoping to see it take off in. it would have been just over 2 hours time and that's not now going to happen. you can see people
7:05 pm
all along the beach and you would expect out in a glorious weekend like this on the space coast here in florida. but many of them are here specifically for the rocket launch. some have already gone because they've decided that if they are going to see optimists take to the skies, then they're not going to spend anymore time down here on the beach in florida. ok for now until july, 1st. cape canaveral. thank you while staying with us now and joining us is neo n right is a space journalist based in dublin. thanks for joining us here on the program. what do you make of this launch cancellation? well, my heart goes out to the people, cocoa beach with alum, who sat there patiently waiting for this launch. but it was always only a launch attempt. this is a test nation and they were never going to launch unless they were absolutely
7:06 pm
sure that it was saved. the problem was really extraordinary. you have the largest rock us at one of the largest rockets ever built, which has been stopped by the smallest atom that we know in nature. hydrogen. the problem is that hydrogen is such a small atom that he leaks very, very easily. and so when nasa was fueling the rocket, the hydrogen fuel pipes were connected as a, as a plate like this to the rockers. the problem was that this plate kept slipping and they haven't been able to find a way of making those 2 plates come together. my information is that this means that they will not launch now until october. is this
7:07 pm
a reminder of just how perilous a space missions can be and it's not easy? is it? well, it's not cold rockets, hutchins, you know, for no reason. this really is difficult, as i said, this is all about trying to get to plates it's, it's not even engineering, it's more arch trying to you. they spend all day today trying to massage these 2 plates together and they just didn't quite succeed. but you know, that happens a lot in the space business on this occasion, the lives of women and man were not involved, but they must fly as they intend to fly humans. and so they backed off quite properly. and despite today's disappointment, when, when you look at the advances that are other countries are making, is this now
7:08 pm
a new space race? well, now it's really interesting. you should ask that because i'm expecting any moment now that we're going to hear from the nasa administrator. bill nelson. he, he's already flagged on their television network that he's planning to make a statement that tells me 1st of all, that's what i just said. but i think it's probably going to be delayed to look over . but the reason nelson, who is a hard, really seasoned international politician, the reason he's coming out up front now is to clearly state that the americans are serious about going to the moon and that they are not going to allow. if i may, this is a massive rephrasing of anything he might say, but are not going to allow the chinese to beat them. that will be the subtext and with that seriousness and, and nasa is talking about
7:09 pm
a future based on the moon to possibly then go on to mars. is that, is that feasible? oh, totally. there's no question that we can do this because we did it before the problem for the engineers today, a new generation of, of engineers, men and women. the, the problem is that they're now discovering. but when they did is 50 years ago, and it is literally 50 years ago this year, the last man set foot on the moon. and when they did it 50 years ago, i mean, it should have been impossible. and this is a wonderful demonstration, exactly 50 years after the last apollo mission, a wonderful demonstration of how difficult it was back then. you and right, we'll leave it there. thank you very much. indeed for your insights. today,
