the 3rd speech was an inclusive message for the world. this was a cost, the most important speech, all formerly prince charles, his life. now king charles, he was tasked with the responsibility of summing up the mood of the nation, but also mourning the loss of his mother as the head of the royal family as well. time here in the u. k is measured slightly differently to on the pass of the world, not just in days, months and years, but in iraq is an epoch. and we use the phrase end of an error for a loosely often. but in this case, it really genuinely ease at the end of an era, the end of the 2nd elizabeth in age. and we all know, of course, that after 70 years on the throne, this isn't going to be something that king charles will be able to replicate. but what he hinted at in his speech is that he will be a continuity monarch. he said that he wanted to carry on many of the value traditions that his mother had embodied and preserved for so many years. and that

almost hinted at the possibility that he was very aware of. some of the control sees that the world family had been mired in the past and that was the clear distinction between what the role was as prince of wales and what the world role now is as the sovereign. another thing that really stood out was that he said he wanted to serve people of all backgrounds and all beliefs realizing, of course, that this is a modern country, a diverse country. and if the rural family wants to remain relevant for many years to come in east to be representative of all of that diversity across the u. k. cannon's fired $96.00 shots marking each year of the queen's life. 7 great, ah, bells also told, and cathedrals and town churches as part of a long planned, carefully organized series of events. people in britain are now observing 10 days of national mourning for their longest serving monarch wrought. madison has been

quiet. he knows very well what is expected of him as king. he has strong views on things in national life. that's true. but i think he's also got a very strong awareness from an early age, from the queen, and from his own training and his own judgment. that is a constitutional monarch. you have to be a little bit more circumspect and i'm sure that he will be as a woman, you cornel charles and also li, behind an enormous business empire in the south west of england. it's worth more than a $1000000000.00 and has been accused of helping drive local traders out of business . and that perhaps is a particular concern for supporters of the monarchy. which as of now, is a large majority in the u. k. the question is whether he can maintain that popularity. queen elizabeth kept her support during many years when the behavior of her family raised many eyebrows. the code of the richmond. and it does. and it's an

arguable that in terms of the brands of the house of windsor, charles, his son, william and his wife katherine, are seen as a more exciting proposition, more glamorous than a man who seems often to prefer his own company to that of others. charles has no doubt had many years to dwell on these things. his choices will help determine whether support for the molecule continues as it is now since the world. so any guy, yeah, go, i'll just, sarah. still ahead on al jazeera will have reaction from australia as king charles . the 3rd becomes the new head of the commonwealth. and in other news, 80000 football fans get a glimpse of what the world cup final and popular will be like ah

oh, you're watching al jazeera reminder of our top stories. this our the united kingdom's new monarch charles 3rd has addressed the nation and the wider commonwealth for the 1st time as king. he praised his mother, queen elizabeth for her unswerving devotion. earlier he met crowds of well wishers at buckingham palace. as the u. k. begins a 10 day morning period, queen elizabeth, the 2nd 70 year reign has been commemorated and celebrated crowds of continued to gather outside buckingham palace and bell moral scotland to pay their respects. queen elizabeth's rise to power also marked the decline of britain's imperial age. these are the countries and territories that were under the sway of the british

empire when she took the throne in 1952, either his colonies protectorate mandates, or places where the queen was head of state. but in the decades that followed, several countries won their independence, and many became republics. only 14 other countries still recognized her as had of state. most of them will need to change their constitutions to refer to king charles the 3rd as head of state. all the caribbean countries have indicated they want to become republics. barbados became one in 2021. some have also called her reparations from the u. k. for slavery, referenda on removing the monarch have also been held in australia, st. vincent and the grenadines and hulu, but none have passed. all right, let's bring in more kinney. he's a professor at australian studies institute at the australian national university. he joined us via sky from cambra, are good to have you with us. what is the reaction there so far to king charles as the new monarch? me. how popular is he in australia and how to most australians view king charles versus how they viewed queen elizabeth?
6:19 am
yes, well, it's a very interesting question that we don't really know. we do know that the queen herself, was held in very high regard personally and as a monarch. and that is trying to, has had this long term attachment to, to britain and to the constitutional monarchy. as you mentioned earlier, had a chance to vote itself into a state of being a republic back in 1999, but all the states voted against that. so that was a kind of a missed opportunity i guess. for republicans, the question now is will let change now that the queen has left the throng, that's the sort of big question and it does turn on things like whether king charles is going to be as popular, have as much or authority and respect as, as queen elizabeth, the 2nd and mark you just mentioned that referendum that was held in 1999. of course it's really ins right now. we're in the process of mourning queen elizabeth,
6:20 am
but how much has her death also reawaken this? this long standing debate in australia over the creation of a republic and ending the country's association with the monarchy. well, it's kind of an obvious debate to have because even some of the republicans like malcolm turnbull, the former prime minister who led that republican referendum pushed back in 999. even he had declared himself and elizabeth and republican, which is to say that he'd accepted that republicans didn't really have much chance of getting this to buy moving while lizbeth remind on the trying. now, of course that she's gone. inevitably, the debate arises again, but i think people are going to be very careful not to be doing it too quickly, as you say, that this period of morning is a great deal of sadness across the country at queen elizabeth passing. and i think it would be against the interests of the republican cause to be seen to be moving with too much haste in firing up the debate about the republic. yeah,
6:21 am
and mark what you're saying right now essentially was echoed by the australian prime minister anthony albany. he had spoken in the past of supporting this movement toward the establishment, possibly ever a public. but just on friday, he said that today's a day for one issue and one issue only, which is to pay tribute to queen elizabeth the 2nd. do you expect that his stance will change or, or will it be more of look, the time is not right? just yet, and maybe we'll explore this further down the road. i think that's probably right, but there is another effect during this as well. and that is that there is a referendum planned by the government of a stranger in relation to 1st nations peoples, and recognizing them in the constitution and putting into the constitution, what's called an indigenous voice, or a 1st nations voice to parliament. a mechanism for consultation with 1st nations peoples, now light, a government which is strongly republican, inclined
6:22 am
a relatively new government niggley, but it has already made clear that it would not be proceeding with the republic for dealing with his voice question. there's a view that putting to referendum questions on significant matters to, to try and bite as of the same time could lead to both of those matters. falling short of the requirement for a majority of both in a majority of the 6 states. so there's a kind of a technical consideration here as well as the values question about the republic. i do think the republic question will come up, but it's going to be dealt with sequentially with the, the voice to parliament to issue dealt with 1st. all right, mark kinney, professor australian studies institute at the australian national university. great to get your perspective. thanks so much. thank you. mohammed rushes, deploying more troops. harkey as ukrainian forces conduct a major counter offensive in towns and villages in the east. the head of the
