winding down to holly, rude house, full of history, every stone as a story to tell. and the fact that it's all happened there was somehow, actually there reinforced the importance of the monarchy to the union. something that the queen strove to do throughout her life. okay. me and then to do to her. okay, forgive me. we'll have to leave it there. michael kohler, former royal at broadcaster and independent will correspond that. thank you so much for joining us. well, we've been seeing king charles, the 3rd and members of the royal family holding that silent vigil for queen elizabeth the 2nd at saint charles is cathedral in edinburgh. we'll have more intimate

injured, ours lie from london, and these are lies. pictures were getting from edinburgh where king charles and his siblings have taken part in the vigil of the princes at saint giles is cathedral. you can see there the car just making its way down from the crammed royal mile where i was in. so mourners of cram those cobbled streets these past couple of days . we saw king charles and his siblings standing guard by their mother's coffin. in fact, his vigil this poignant vigil. it's only the 2nd time, the 3rd time, rather than it's happened, i believe. in recent years, king charles they are making his way down towards the royal mile and then back towards hollywood palace. as you can see, the crowds rather thinning out there, but it has been absolutely crammed on the streets of edinburgh. let's talk to our correspondent, rob matheson, who's outside the palace of hollywood house in edinburgh. it was really quite poignant. i think, role to watch that kind of silence standing guards of the coffin.
10:02 pm
yes, and i think it's the point at which one gets the sense public face of the family's sense of responsibility and duty when it comes to an event like this. this is, as you said, only the 2nd time or the 3rd time that this is happened. it's only happened to 2 times before and it is, it's a time when the family is able to show their respect. schubert, i there to certain extent humility, i suppose, but certainly they indicate how somberly they take this situation publicly to the members and to the people around them just to show their public respect for queen elizabeth the 2nd. it is a very unusual situation. in one respect, because this is the 1st time that a woman has taken part in it for princess on. of course, the said princess, while i is the queen's daughter and is therefore the entitled to take part in this

sum. and this sir, ah procedure and we expected to go on for about 20 minutes or so. and none after which they the guard will be taken over by the official guard of honor, the yeoman of the guards. and then subsequently to that the previous guide to bid, the other gods, will be mounted by the royal company of archers. and both of those gods of honor will essentially em work back and forth in order to keep the coffin or protective out whilst the members of the public continued to file past and pay their respects at rob. it's kind of surreal in a way to see king charles attorney on new kings standing there. and of course, members of the public filing past. and then of course as they left. and when i, once in a while mile, you can see plenty of people still standing there. and although there were people kind of smiling gently clasping i got the feeling that the atmosphere was still quite kind of somber. but i know they're also been sort of mixed reactions across
10:04 pm
the day as well. how would you describe it? i think that for the time that we have have spent here and the people that we've spoken to the general feeling is one of respect of people wanting to pay their respects. are safe to say farewell to a monarch steps, for many of them has been the only monarch they have ever known. however, it is true to say that in scotland, not everybody is a fan of the royal family. there are those who believe that the royal family doesn't have a role to play in modern life. a we the, this is a country that has gone through a referendum to break up the union of, of great britain. it decided to stay with it ultimately. but only marginally. and then during the briggs referendum in 2016, it voted to stay with europe despite what the rest of the country country wanted. there is a, there is an over arching respect for the royal family perhaps as individuals,
10:05 pm
but that are certainly those who don't feel the same way as they have been a couple of cases like that. over the last couple of days. one moment is said to have been arrested and charged with the breach of the piece outside charles jobs cathedral for showing the sign i 900 monitors to sign, and one man was arrested earlier on today. well maps and they're joining us from hollywood house in the world. thank you. will earlier thousands of people lined the streets of edinburgh in scotland to pay their respects to queen elizabeth the 2nd wooden new king charles the 3rd, joined his siblings. as the score to her coffin through the scottish capital in a historic procession. allan fisher begins the coverage as a nation, mourns so does the son. so does a family. there are official duties to perform, but that a personal heartaches to consider. king charles took his place behind his mother's coffin. as it left the monarch's official scottish residence for the last time,
10:06 pm
he was joined by his brothers and sisters. they walked the short distance along edinburgh's historic royal mile to saint giles cathedral. in places the watching public stood 10 deep wanting to share their grief, share their part and share in a moment of history. a times the silence was deafening. edlio charles flew to scotland after formal engagements in london. ah, as he arrived at the policy, no inherits, he was met by a rendition of the national anthem was listening silently replacing the war queen with king. he inspected the god, the foreigner before entering the palace with his mother's coffin lead over night. ah. in front of a congregation made up of all walks of life in scotland. they remembered queen elizabeth slough of scotland and whose love for scotland was legendary.
10:07 pm
and there were prayers too, for the king. and the challenge is he no feasts. and we pray god, splicing upon king charles, who will surely draw strength from his mother's example. there will be a vigil no 24 hours for the people of scotland to see their own personal farewells . there is a political element to king charles is returned to scotland, but that is for another day. this was a day for a family and a nation to say a final farewell to the queen. alan fisher. i'll just eat up at hollywood palace in edinburgh, which has been taken a look at those shots now that says singers, the cathedral in edinburgh, it's just very close to edinburgh castle sitting on top of the royal mile. you can see members of the puppet there, processing very close to the queen's coffin already we saw what's called the

princess, the jewel. that's where the, the siblings of new king's child stood in a kind of god, if you like, a somber, reflective god. next to their mother's coffin, whilst members of the public actually went past, we saw them leave just maybe a few minutes ago heading off towards of course the palace that he inherited and towards hollywood and palace. but it's been a really, i think where it's been one of the procedure. if you like, we saw him earlier at the scottish parliament and i think we can head to ro mattress and now to talk a little bit more about what king charles has been doing specifically in scotland today. he's just, i would cite hollywood house in edinburgh for us. m. hi there, rob, rob watts, has king charles been doing for the rest of the day? of course we saw him back at the scottish parliament. i thought that was very interesting. it was only a year ago that he was there by his his mother's side. that's right. the scottish
10:09 pm
parliament has actually played quite a significant role in the lives of the family. since it opened in the 1900 ninety's . the queen has made a speech there every year since it opened. and what's been interesting about this is that it's in many ways, it's been a time of mocking, poignant moments to each of the special places that that exists for the royal family here. the scottish parliament being one of them because i say it has been a regular feature in their, their calendar every year. but equally a chance in a sense for the family to, to see the palace of hollywood house, just close to where i am. but 100 meters are still away as, as a places, as one of the final farewells for her majesty. queen elizabeth, the 2nd hollywood house has played a tremendous role in the, in the lives of the royal families over the years. it is their official residence here. the queen has invariably spent it spent

a week at the start of each summer here carrying out official duties such as investiture and awarding honors, particularly for people who have me done something special for scott. and she usually spends that week here prior to going up to ball moral for we were just a few days ago. of course we're on thursday afternoon when elizabeth passed away. so there has been a gradual process of, i suppose, withdrawing or departing key places that have been happening. and that is happening over the last couple of days and print. the king has been very much a part of that, as he assumes many of the responsibilities that the queen up to now has been holding it will up be up to king charles the 3rd to come here every summer and carry out those ceremonial duties. it'll be up to king charles to come to the scottish parliament and speak to amos peas here. and it is very much to period of transition. and at the moment the that transition appears to be fairly seamless in
10:11 pm
what we are seeing now. and it is leading up to the point where to morrow and the coffin carrying queen elizabeth the 2nd will be boarded ah, put on to a plane and will be flown to london and buckingham palace for the remaining or funeral arrangements and at flight i will read she will be accompanied by a princess and so a gradual process of saying farewell to scotland and a gradual process of scotland being able to say farewell to queen elizabeth the 2nd of mattresses. joining us there live from edinburgh as we see again, members of the public processing just to be very close to the cleans coffin. well, earlier king charles, the 3rd took another important step as monarch addressing members of parliament, he pledged to uphold the you case constitutional government. while john hall has more now from westminster,
