5:02 am
ah welcome is one for the history books. nasa has deliberately smashed a spacecraft into an asteroid. oh, i got it. and it was all in the name of survival to space. agency wants the not the asteroid slightly office trajectory using the double asteroid redirection test or spaceship nasa, it can repeat this in the future. space rocks, heads of threats and humanity. let's get more mis joining us or vice. got it from seattle. washington is tiny harrison. she's a fellow at the outer space institute. really good of you to join us on the program . so how tricky was it to carry out this mission and how long before we nodes the success? so this is tricky because the 1st time we've ever done anything like this where we've tried to change the trajectory of something while it was in space. this was
5:03 am
at the level of we couldn't even pilot the thing all the way there. we had to put in commands into the spacecraft, so that those last couple of minutes as it was going into impact the asteroid it was flying all out its own. so it's basically a hold your breath and hope that everything works properly and those last couple of minutes there and it peers to work flawlessly. but the, the aim is to kind of, as you say, a change it's trajectory. we don't know if it's done not yet. theory. not yet. so there are going to be a bunch of telescopes, monitoring the asteroids from the ground here on earth across multiple continents, over the next few days and weeks to make sure that we actually accomplished the trajectory change that we were looking for. and this involved the very small change to the velocity of the asteroid, like less than a percent, but it should be enough to move its course enough that we could detect it with those telescope. so what's the big picture here? what a scientists trying to learn from this the idea here is,
5:04 am
are we actually capable of changing the trajectory of an asteroid that might be on a collision course with earth? we know that this has happened many times in the past. it's what led to the extension of the dinosaurs. it may have caused some of the other extension events we've had in history. but we've never had the technological capability to actually be proactive or something like this. if we did find an asteroid that was on collision course with earth. so the ones that we visited today are not a danger. they were never going to impact the years, but it was just the test of this technology. and if this works, then we know that we can use the same technology to hopefully deflect asteroids that might pose an actual threat. why was there a reason this particular asteroid was picked for this? so, interestingly, this was a binary asteroid. so there was a larger one called the most and a smaller one, die more phone, which is the one that we actually impacted. and this was a way to, to change the distance of those 2 asteroids from each other. and that's how we can
5:05 am
measure how the trajectory and the velocity of that smaller asteroid change from the impact event. so, having that pair of them was really useful from a scientific perspective. and was this the most effective way? i mean, when you look at the movie on the gather, i mean, the aim that was to blow up the asteroid here that just been trying to nudge it, was that the best way to deal with this is probably the best way, because then you at least know where the asteroid is, if you blow it up into a 1000000 pieces, you've gone from one very large impact or 2 tons of small pieces that you suddenly have to deal with and try to track all of those separately. you might have actually created a bigger problem for yourself than if you just nudge the trajectory of a single asteroid. that was all the question course with the earth. i use and you mentioned it yourself. i mean asteroids have been colliding into for years, haven't they? it's what got rid of the dinosaurs. is it surprising therefore, that it's taken this long to come up with a mission like this?
5:06 am
i think so it's, it's something that is not quite as exciting, maybe as the search for life on other planets. when you try to sell it to congress or something like that, but it's, it's kind of an infrastructure technician, it's something that's really critical for us to understand. and it's taken a while to get here, but now that we've actually, hopefully there should demonstrate it. this will prove that it's something we should be investing in over time, because there's something we actually have the capability to do. and i think maybe even 1020 years ago based movies like armageddon that make it look like it would be this very huge effort to do something like this. we realize that it's actually maybe a lot smaller of an effort. then maybe we previously thought, okay, really interesting to get your thoughts. tiny harrison fellow at the outer space in st. jude speaking to us there from seattle, washington the the kremlin has admitted it made mistakes,
