tv   NEWSHOUR  Al Jazeera  October 29, 2022 6:00pm-7:01pm AST

6:00 pm
jazeera a showcase of the best documentary films from across the network on al jazeera. so the 13 seconds on that i'm going to be at a woke up the 1st time was in south africa in 2010. it really was the face month ever. now again, the country that i'm residing is hosting a little and i know that a lot of people who live here that might be the 1st time that they're experiencing a woke up. i can tell you it's going to be great. it's a celebration of people. it's a celebration of the school. it's the atmosphere. a faithful will cup is number one . it doesn't get any because there's something magical about that i'm really excited about. this will come back on to wait for the get started. ah, this is al jazeera. ah,
6:01 pm
it is good to have you with us. i'm 0 venue. this is the news. our alive from dough are coming up today in the show reports of multiple deaths in somalia, after 2 car bombs explode near government buildings in mogadishu. they could predict that it would be the biggest ever gathering of people in our history. the long march supporters of pakistan's, former leader, enron con, slowly make their way to the capital islamabad. a warning for protesters in iran, the head of the revolution regard says, saturday will be the last day of what he calls riots. i'm john handwriting in one of the world, new oil capitols in south america. i'll tell you more, coming up. as far as smile with the latest um, well cap news including one thou, jim's best to go with the free cage. yes. as if a strike from the blowing fires manchester city back to the top of the english penny li.
6:02 pm
ah. it's just up to $1500.00 gmc and we start in somalia, where there's been a suspected suicide attack in the capital market issue. police and state media se there been a number of deaths to car bombs exploded at a busy intersection near several government offices on saturday. afternoon, the 1st blast sending a plume of smoke over the city a several minutes later there was a 2nd explosion, as ambulances arrived on the scene. let's bring in hold on a liam of that issue. she's a senior advisor to the city's mayor down. thanks for being with us. what do the timing and location of the attack? tell us? well, thank you for heavenly. it's an unfortunate time to be with you. a location was really at the heart of the show. symbolic place. the militia nation was a good, clean, balmy, really busy time,
6:03 pm
haven't be used intersection. but again, you know, is using all its tactics to scare and make money in the capital. so there has been an increase in attacks against somalian institutions recently. why do you think that is why you may know the president has shepherd who has declared all war and she lab and there had been an uprising against across the country, particularly in the human region and the, you know, the south control area. and that really has had been dealing millennium and has been successful in large, lots of land across south central, som. i mean, really, this is sort of the last ditch effort from shop to, to make it known to somebody's how savage they are and how brutal they are, by attacking average citizens who are going about their day. is it possible for the
6:04 pm
government to prevent either tax because government buildings, institutional targets already heavily protected and still these attacks are occurring. i mean, obviously some of the areas are soft targets just because it's used by the public. they are located in large areas that are part of the city central. so it's really hard to sometimes prevent these attacks. but nevertheless, i think we have seen a reduction in the past. the last attack was the hotel high. yeah. you know, it didn't come for nearly 48 hours. it just tells you that chalabi is being routed out, but they are really forced to be reckoned with. and it will take time for us to be eliminated from the capital. but the work is going now we'll see
6:05 pm
a lot of tax, i am sure, just because of the ongoing government and community uprising that we are seeing across the country. all right, hold on. joining us from alisha today. thank you very much for your time. now i take you to some breaking news. russia says it's suspending. it's un enter key a broker, green export deal with ukraine. the country's defense ministry says it is pulling out due to recent attacks on its black sea fleet. well, harry faucet joins us from keith. harry, i know it's early days, we haven't known this very long, but what can you tell us around this news? well, certainly a no reaction yet coming from the ukranian side and no reaction as well to the accusations that russia was making throughout the day that ukrainian, or, with the assistance they said from britain had attacked the black sea feet in service to pull the, the port in crimea, which is obviously occupied by russia,
6:06 pm
annexed by russia, are in 2013. and so that is the reason that they are giving for having pulled out of this great deal. this was a key breakthrough, really both in terms of ukraine's ability to export and then to harvest is agricultural crops. this autumn. and in terms of world food supplies, there was a real, a glock, jam taking place in southern ukraine. so key to a grain 2 sunflower oil to to many agricultural products used around the world. and a reason for, for some of these shortages and spikes in food prices around the world that was struck back in late july. it was meant to last for a $120.00 days, potentially be renewed on the 19th of november if there were no objections from any side for some days. now, russia has been, has been objecting to the terms of the way that it's been going on or complaints as well that russia hadn't been able to exploit its own agricultural products and
6:07 pm
fertilizers. and now in the light of this attack, which russia said lightly damaged a minesweeper, there were reports that the damage was greater than that. and coming from both ariel and seaborne, unmanned at drones, russia is now pulling out of this deal. so as i say, we're still waiting to hear any reaction coming from the ukrainians. as far as the british are concerned, they're denying any involvement in this morning's attack or harry stand by. we can bring, or here is a little bit more and that attack in the black sea that you mentioned. russia says it repelled a ukrainian drone attack on a black sea fleet ships docked in the crimean city, sylvester paul as what harry was talking about. the kremlin claims the attack was carried out. quotes under the guidance of british specialists. listen to this. here we have to keep regime carried out a terrorist attack on ship of the black sea fleet and civilian ships that were on the outer and in a road. stead of the sebastopol based 9 unmanned aerial vehicles and 7 economists,
6:08 pm
maritime drones were involved in the attack. so harry and light of what we just heard, i want to go back to what you were telling us just a moment ago. is there any reason to believe that the british, at this stage, were involved in any way, shape, or form with this attack? was certainly nothing substantiated by the russians. no evidence yet, provided they said not only with the british involved in this attack in the early hours of saturday morning. they are also claiming that british underwater teams were involved in the sabotage of the north stream $1.00 and $2.00 pipelines in the baltic sea. a few weeks ago, again, britain is denying the there's any involvement in either of those events. and so the key thing now are that the, well, i suppose there to be questions, how much damage really was done in this attack and what kind of retaliation militarily might there be or by the russians? because you remember just at the beginning of the month with the attack on the
6:09 pm
coach bridge linking crimea and mainland russia are the the truck bomb that was used to severely damaged that bridge. that was followed just a couple of days later with a heavy air strikes on cave and other parts of ukraine. but already it seems, there is retaliation on this diplomatic political, economic level, where the decision by russia to pull out of this deal. it is something that they would seem to be edging towards over recent days, a lot more. talk about this coming from the kremlin. and now the defense ministry has announced that his results of this attack in crimea, they are pulling out. and harry, if you can take us back just a little bit, this deal was a hardly fort agreement, or that was found between russia, between ukraine was mediated by tortilla. it was hard to get to a point where it was where there was an agreement to bring the grain out of the region. it was on also to levels on the political level,
6:10 pm
on the logistical level. a lot of talk about the military, dangers, potentially for any civilian shipping, going in and out from the, the port areas in southern ukraine or the amounts of mines floating in the water and the kind of work that we need to need to be done on that front as well, but it was seen as crucial or for ukraine because the, the silos in which the previous years harvest was still being stored. we're still, or if not full, at least a very, very much it use to, to store the, the previous years harvest and with the new harvest coming up. we could have been a major economic and an agricultural problem here in ukraine and for the wider world of the amount of grain, not of sunflower seed, and some flower oil in the world. economy coming from the feels of ukraine is substantial. it's, it is a major part of that part of the global staples that are required. and so the
6:11 pm
prices were spiking. there was real concern about hunger, especially in africa as a result of this log jam. and so it was extremely important, more than mine, 1000000 tons of agricultural products have already been shipped out as a result of this deal. and now it looks like it's, sir. well, for now, it is ended. it's going to be extremely difficult. you'd imagine to get it back up and running again from this point. absolutely, harry faucet reporting live from keep on this breaking news. thank you very much, harry. now let's bring in russel sir dar. he's following this and covering this forest from it stumble because russell turkey was a key player in getting this deal done. yes, indeed. turkey or for starkey from the beginning on has been the mid year there between russia and ukraine and also with the you add as well. so in july these 4 parties somehow have been able, managed to, to, to, to reach
6:12 pm
a deal. and july, it was signed, so later than we have seen the ships start to carry, do you gain grain to the global market? and so you but so far off the announcement coming from the russian defense minister, there hasn't been yet. any official statement coming from the turkish capital or any of the other officials. yeah. but however, as today is quite a busy day for prison that he's in an open opening ceremony off the 1st locally produced turkish car, which is called code. and so all of the state official, high levels, including all of the ministers are now there. so probably right after that, you're going to hear the official reaction from cut out. so that was reached in july as simply the mechanism was, was, was being overseen by the united nations. so according to that,
6:13 pm
that the mechanism according to the plan of the agreement that they have reached the bid, the ships were carrying the ukrainian green to the black sea and taking it to his stumbled and stumbled. it has been a center establish just for that grange and bend from best center to the global market. but russia, by that time has one condition that each of the ship that is going to leave you creating a board must be suspected must be investigated or checked by d, a russian naval forces. and that have that has been accepted by, by ukraine. by that time, so we do not know whether russia now see any security threat that the sustain the deal or any other reason. so it's not clear at this, at this moment, but so for hundreds of thousands of ships have left you import cities and carried the grades to the international market. something that russia has been quite critical about. and also we have seen that it has the need with president abilene
6:14 pm
and as well from time to time. they were saying that this ships or generally weren't planned to mostly carried a grain to the poor countries on the dollar company, the woman about countries. but so far more than half of them is going to the rich countries, european countries i saw that was a criticism to where the did to how the way, how it was being practiced. but we do not know whether this is the reason that russia or is going to provide or not. so this is going to be quite a huge blow to the global food security at this point. it seems so, but at this point you also do not know whether moscow had any discussion with ankara in the way of getting to make this decision or not whether the united nation have been notified about it or not. but so far, as i said, we do not need facial statement from yet. absolutely. resource 3rd are look, we appreciate all the context around this breaking news here on al jazeera that
6:15 pm
russia has just pulled out of a key deal that allowed for exporting ukraine in grain via turkey resume. thank you very much. we'll keep a surprise of any developments in the coming hours along with harry faucet and keep, appreciate all the reporting there. now the supporters of pakistan's, former prime minister iran con, are marching on the capital to demand snap elections. they've begun the 380 kilometer walk from the hor to islamabad, while hider is there and he spoke to him, ron con. wrong on moving or what your dollars of paper coming out. your grade german long get through. we have spoken doing wrong. more than a 1000000, john is not my boss, is there's no other option for the ruling government or general electron donor because our country read us. you
6:16 pm
expected at least a 1000000 people to converge on a law and the grand finale they did on friday. the board. what did you really know? dr. march? from someone who was 26 years of experience. again, starting body from scratch and the building up to the biggest body of august thought now i feel that it will be at least a 1000000 people that i can predict. of course success lies in the hands of the almighty a lot. but i can predict that it will be the biggest ever gathering of people in history. did god and a good guy, margaret connie, brian miner's are dog wrong. men from the prime minister. what is the talk about 3 and election? that's been the number one demand. and why is it the number one demand?
6:17 pm
because we want the people of august on to elect a government to the board. we do not want a foreign conspiracy fact of a bunch of criminals who spend billions of rupees to buy a loyalty of parliament indians and bring down a government the laundry, present people of august on. and it is evident from all the bi election where they've been wiped out. it has been evident from the massive crowds you can just see for yourself today. i mean, this is, this is just spawn daniels, it's, it's a board against the government. people are sick of these drugs 30 years, these people have been stealing from this country. the massive corruption cases on that. 60 percent of cabinet hasn't been on correction cases. and they expect us to accept these stooges, who, who do not represent the people all we want is election. let the people who focused
6:18 pm
on debate, whichever government they want, but we do not accept them. and the problem is that because they realize that, you know, in the bi election that's evident, that they're going to lose badly. they're running away from elections. so the dogs will only be, are you willing to all elections or not? i've got to be ready to come out and the large numbers that we have been talking do expect already large do diet starting moment. never on on. i've been reading at the board ever was out why and award on monday i had one of the largest. what was your budget on? come on, hide a reporting. there are plenty more head on the news. our including will be telling
6:19 pm
you why financial issues generating problems for the you case plans to build a new nuclear power plant. at the final face, off brazil's presidential contenders, go head to head in one last debate before sundays run off votes. and taking a piece of katara with them and sport, we look at what designers have in store for the upcoming world cup. ah, the more funerals have been held in iran that people shot dead at a shrine on wednesday. 15 people were killed in the attack in the city of shiraz. i saw his gland responsibility for that. during the funeral rally the crowd shouted pro government slogans. natur of support comes as authorities continue their crack down on anti government protesters. the revolutionary doris says, as of tomorrow, it will be no further protest on who yet. so hannah, i'm talking now to the students who have always been pioneers and fighting arrogant
6:20 pm
powers. what's happened now is a few number of students say, echoing the voice of the foreigners returned to the nation. don't turn the universities into the battlefield of the u. s. against the nation. be careful because they want to deceive. you don't misuse the establishment. self restraint. i tell the few deceived women. don't be the cultural soldiers of the enemy. quit the evil actions today is the last day of the riots. don't come to the streets anymore . a daughter jibari joins us live from darren door. so help us interpret this. what does this mean for protesters starting to morrow? does this signal an intensification of the crackdown? well, while the message from the major general of the revolution guard was very clear, i think it certainly raises some serious questions at this point. with the main one being that the ongoing protest that are now in their 6 weeks will they be coming to an end because of
6:21 pm
a further crack down by the security forces. as we heard from major general saying, tell me, he said that this should be the end, whether or not his calls will be heard on the streets and in the universities is another story. we understand that as he was speaking and delivering that message in the city of shiraz, we saw a number of universities across the country and having demonstrations taking place where the students were chanting slogans against the government. what is not clear now is how much that will be tolerated after this point based on what he said. it is clear that they want this and as quickly as possible. what comes next is really up to anyone to guess at this stage, but i think it is very clear now that the tolerance that we've seen so far from the security forces will be ending in the coming days. the head of the revolutionary guards, one of the most powerful forces in the country, making it very clear that these demonstrations are driven by western powers. now,
6:22 pm
while he was speaking at the ceremony commemorating and the procession of a funeral of those victims of the terror attack, we also had heard from a number of other officials over the past few days since that attack was carried out on wednesday. mainly the iranian president, abraham racy, who linked the demonstrators to the events that unfolded in the shrine on wednesday evening. and she was saying that the demonstrators have paved the way for terror attacks in the country. certainly giving the security forces in this country a legitimate reason as far as they see it for further crackdown. now, all this is happening as we've seen some of the most violent demonstrations taking place since wednesday, which was the 40 day since that 22 year old nasa and many passed away in police custody on september 16th since wednesday, according to official figures. we've seen at least 6 demonstrators killed and at least 5 security forces also losing their life. now this is the official numbers
6:23 pm
that we've heard from various government media outlined the unofficial numbers according to various other groups, put that sugar of course, much higher. so i think we're at a very critical point in the story that has been unfolding here over the past 6 weeks. and whether or not the warnings will be heated by the protesters remains to be seen. but what is now clear is that the revolutionary guard is at the head of the revolution guard has made it crystal clear that further unrest will not be tolerated. endorses jabari reporting from there on thank you very much. and there's renewed interest in nuclear power in the u. k as the war and ukraine threatens electricity supply and prices. the british government wants to invest a $100000000.00 in a new nuclear plants in the east coast, but the projects facing problems. as charlie angela reports from the suffolk coast, this coast in east and england is it protected area about standing natural beauty
6:24 pm
is also a sight of bitter dispute. britain, newest nuclear power station is planned for here alongside the aging size will be plant prime minister bars. johnson championed the new european pressurized react to the planning commission for size. well see, pushed through by his government could now be challenged in the high court. in a case brought by local protest group is on the road. encouraged. if we stood a long enough, you'd see the cliffs stopped for why it's happening very, very rapidly. we're flood zone. this area of size will will be an island within 100 years. it's the most inappropriate place. you can imagine, to build twin react to development. $12000000.00 tons of aggregate will have to be brought to this inaccessible place to build the plant in the 1st place, britain is facing an energy crisis as part of its energy security strategy. the government wants nuclear to supply a quarter. u. k. electricity needs by 2050 sized. we'll see. we'll plug 7 percent
6:25 pm
of the gap providing $6000000.00 homes with electricity. but critics argue it's slow 12 years to build and expensive up to $34000000000.00, while french developer e. d. s. and the government will together fund 50 percent. there's little interest from private investors. so the government is looking to place much of the remaining costs on taxpayers until finances secured. construction can't start. the other big concern is water needed to cool the reactors? this is one of the driest regions in the country, and there's not enough capacity in the local water supply to deliver what's needed . so e d f is proposing to build a new desalination pont, but that won't be ready until 2026. in the meantime, they plan to truck in water 4000000 meters a day, e d. after kind comment. the government has weighed up the evidence,
6:26 pm
the spain exhausted public inquiry into the project. and of course, it'll be up to the court to, to make that decision from our perspective, this overwhelming positive economic case. that's what we do to support our local economy. and therefore, we're fully supported. the scheme for the track record for building new pos is not great projects in france and finland have run over budget by 200 to 300 percent and been delayed by a decade. so whether you case need energy security is urgent. there are questions over where the size will see the answer. charlie angela al jazeera, suffolk. so we're going to be taking a deep dive over this renewed interest in nuclear energy over the next few days. speak now to to rick ralph in vienna. he's a former senior official at the international atomic energy agency to read. thank you so much for being with us. let's start with this. should the world in your opinion, be moving more towards nuclear energy at this stage or not?
6:27 pm
well, it is absolutely clear that if we are to meet the climate change goals, written carbon emission, as well as sustainable development goals, nuclear will continue to play an important role in providing clean electricity. at the moment, 10 percent of electricity generated in the world is from nuclear, and it represents 25 percent of clean energy in the world today. ok, you say clean energy. so help us maybe before we get deeper into that, settle this debate. how clean is nuclear energy? because of course the countries that have that depend on it the develop it say it's clean, but many environmental groups would disagree. yes, you're right. this is phil macros contention. however, it's generally believe that nuclear over it's much cycle operation, has one of the lowest amount of carbon emissions and therefore rank among the top a clean energy sources. of course,
6:28 pm
this is disputed by anti nuclear lobby. in particular, if we look at the data that supports the argument that nuclear is clean over the life cycles. if we look at it across the life cycle, ok, what's the downside then? well, 1st of all, the high costs, as we mentioned in your li segment, there's also the issue of dealing with spent nuclear fuel. but we do have solutions for that. and in my view, energy solutions and energy policies, but countries must be made by professionals based on economic criteria based on technological maturity. most politicians in western countries unfortunately only have a window of 4 or 5 years more of the face elections and deciding these matters and the parts in my view is the worst possible option when you say western countries. but should nuclear energy become more prevalent across the world?
6:29 pm
not just the western world. well, today there are $441.00 nuclear power plants operating in the group and or another $53.00 nuclear power plants under construction. and 17 concrete, even countries like egypt, turkey and others. so they're, it's being distributed further. i'm new and pre in the nuclear discussion are small, might be reactive. the reactor at the size will, will be $1600.00 megawatts electric reactor, which is a very big one. but there's also the technological feasibility for smaller reactors of $300.00 megawatts of smaller or countries in africa and certain parts of a ship. alright, terry grew, thank you very much for joining us here on algae, your appreciate your insights. thank you. and on sunday, we turn our attention to germany, where for much of the last 10 years it's been phasing out nuclear power for more
6:30 pm
renewable forms of energy. some more breaking news. this our just in here at l. 0 officials in south korea, se dozens in cardiac arrest follow following crowds surge at halloween festivities and sol. that's according to the don't have news agency. for the unit. suki o has apparently ordered officials to swiftly administer 1st aid and treat people on the scene. mustn't kim, it is on the line. and so what can you tell us at this stage? yes, the incident happened around about an hour ago in the one and when you the famous entertainment the street in. so and today lots of lots of people came out to eat when this evening. a lot more people came out to this entertainment district because of the hollow in return. and then the main street and were, were packed with lots of people everywhere and to show media be due and

happen. appear to be a 10 p. and then after the rescue workers and arrived at the beach and yeah, lots of people were lying on the street a line to a street on conscious and then the rescue workers had to perform the t or needed until the and after that some people were taken to hospitals on them do it. and yes, some paperwork i've taken to one side of the street and the plane sheets were covered on there by the so it's not clear the, the medical conditions up there. and those are the people that were team without breeding properly. so as you mentioned in your intro appraisal, you had ordered official, 23 for 3,
6:32 pm
please do mr. first date entry to people. all right, listen can look. thank you very much for all this. this news just coming into us here at al jazeera that dozens are reported to be cardiac arrest following a crush of people at a halloween festivities. and so thank you very much. brazil's 2 presidential candidates have held their final tv debates, president j, your ball, sanara, and challenger lula da silva, tried to sway undecided voters 2 days ahead of the election and said to be one of the closest votes yet in brazil was. if, if you declare yourself, has been the father of the poor, but in 2021 to support the poor. since they were obliged to stay at home, you took over 19, we gave them emergency 8 only. okay. only thing that you did was to deny the vaccine that the right moments and allow more than 300000 people to die needlessly in this country. one day you pay for that. at teresa bow is in rio de janeiro.
6:33 pm
theresa yesterday was the last debate we just saw parts of it. how did that go and more importantly, where does it leave the race just before the vote? well, there's lots of expectation in this country. i've worked will happen here on sunday . there's around 5 point difference between former press and risking acilo, latino and current precedent. j. eatable is hernando. but even though, let us erase, taking the lead, this is not an outright victory falls had were wrong during the 1st round that it could certainly happen again. so we will have to see what happens on sunday. however, on this friday the both candidates met during the final debate. again, we heard both of them attacking each other. jade was fernando calling. yoletta sealer an inmate, a liar, and our tray, or white lula silver attack, their boys or not, or, or know his performance doing
6:34 pm
a cove at 19 pandemic where hundreds of thousands of people lost their lives. i know, failing to address the real problems that brazilian people affirm that worried about today, which mainly is the economic situation in this country. both candidates were trying to appeal to the undecided bolters would pull suggest is around 14 percent of the population, but there's also a lot of tension on the ground about what will happen here. whether president aid wants or not, or who has been questioning repeatedly this countries, electronic voting system will acknowledge the results. if he failed, he's a man that not wholly, he has questioned the voting system in this country challenge the supreme court challenge to the electro tribunal is now asking his followers that an election. they go out on every polling station to monitor what's going on and to denounce said, if they see that anything wrong. and this is something, this is a country where people are armed heavily armed in some cases, in fact, of residential voters. so now to relax, many of the gun laws that existed in this country and many fear that there could be
6:35 pm
a political violence. c that's always a risk in our country where as i said before, there's weapons on the street. and that's why there's lots of concern about what not only will happen on sunday, but what will happen on sunday night, wendy red election was south start coming. and what are the biggest issues that people are going to be voting on? because they have lewis, a silver on the one hand j your boss and are on the other side to very, very different regions for brazil. well, there are many issues, but right now let me tell you that most of the people you talked to, they're saying that they're going to vote against the candidate. they hate the most of that, you know, a country that's completely polarized right now, but the main issues, as i mentioned before, is the economy minimum wage, that people that die during the cove. it pandemic. the impact on this country's economy of the coven, 19 pandemic. so those are the managers but also one of the,
6:36 pm
the things that we've been talking to people here on the street is crime and violence. brazil is a country that has seen lots of violence and crime on the street service. several governments have tried to tackle it with different policies from, you know, trying to increase the presence of the state in the countries fabulous in the slums . like the one that you can see right behind me. but also with increase our presence of the police and military force. so and many of them have failed and we have, we have seen is that internal criminal organizations here have increased their now, you know, controlling natalie several parts of the country but are having are in close contact with mexican cartels with italian mafia. among other things they're involved in environmental crimes, also reaching as far as to the amazon. so certainly there's a big concerns we've been going around a, some of a real there's, i need us fabulous some of the slums and talking to some gang members. and this is our report. western religion, either in a slum, we're fight between gangs and the police happen almost every day. these men are

part of the 3rd command, a drug trafficking group formed in the 1990s. in recent years, the members have expanded it area of influence to other countries. poodle was war, we move in, paraguay in bolivia, areas close to the border, and from there we get the drugs, the guns, and all of this water and more your former bush on august. 3rd command is an offshoot of one of brazil's most powerful drug trafficking organizations. the command of a mailer or read command. they say they're facing new challenges now. was the president because the city of austin government of both tornado made it easier for people to get weapons. it makes it more challenging for us because now getting weapons and ammunition is more expensive, sometimes more difficult, but we find a way around it. we always do it. they claim to be an army of $120.00 people ready to fight the police and rival gangs. we saw them but were not allowed to film all
