8:05 am
air raid sirens were heard on the island for the 1st time. after one of the missiles fell close to sol, territorial waters and respond south korea fired 3 air to ground missiles towards the north of the 2 countries maritime border. rob mcbride isn't so so tit for tat responses. rob bring us up to speed with the latest. that's why this has been a severe escalation in the tension levels here on the korean peninsula. with this flurry of miss r launches and then a corresponding response from south career. it began early wednesday when that south korea detected at least 10 missiles being fired, all at once from north korea, both east and west into the seas surrounding the korean peninsula. at least 3 of those missiles are thought to have been short range, ballistic missiles. economists of that north korea has been testing on a regular basis, really since the start of this year. now interestingly, one of those missiles fired from a north, crazy east coast, waiting on
8:06 am
a more southerly direction than normal. in fact, in the direction of london. this is a small isolated south korean island that fits in the seas between the korean peninsula and japan. and in fact, when it was detected, flying towards the air raid sirens were activated. it's thought to be the 1st time that has actually been done. so on the island now, the missile fell far short, but again, interested me its spell as south of the de facto maritime border between north and south about 26 kilometers below the line. again, that is another 1st that a missile has landed south of that line. this all comes, of course, as the tensions are very high here with the resumption of large scale military joint exercises between south korean and us forces. and in fact, at the moment we have ad drills going on between the air forces of those 2 countries involving schools of war planes. okay. raw. thank you so much. rob mcbride without update from sol. let's continue this conversation with robert kelly
8:07 am
and bruce on. he's a professor international relations of tucson national university. welcome to al jazeera so significant says all of this and especially that one of the north korean launches fell close to territorial water and south of the northern limit line for the 1st time ever. yeah, that last is a pretty big deal because it's suggested the north koreans are being a little bit more reckless. they shouldn't surprise us too much, nor corrections history. a reckless behavior of the missile launch, which man, for example, last month, you know, about a decade ago, the current leader in norfolk came down with the news brother in law using a w. m d, and an airport in se, asia. so north transaction, history of this kind of stuff, drug running and things like that, right? i'm on the missile test. they have been, i suppose you have a relatively restrained and that they've not actually been of land near south korea . and so that is a step up. i don't actually think this means like a conference or anything is, is coming, but they are pretty obviously upset about the u. s. south re drill at the moment.
8:08 am
and that's what this is probably to me a message about a rather against what do you read into the statement made by the south korean president when he says that john gangs launch is quote, an effective territorial invasion. yeah, i mean if it was actually an invasion, we actually have a shooting war. i mean, i think part of this is because the, we're all kind of, we, the, we, that is the us, the south japanese are all kind of looking for ways to be top and respond to north korea about these tests. what actually to bring into a major conflict and i think particularly ministration in south korea, which is more hawkish and conservative administration, would like to step up and be a little bit more tough with north korea. but it's really difficult to find a way to do that. right now if there was like a good silver bullet, responded these north green tests, your any government will try that last 10 or 15 years. and so my guess is quite honestly, that was really report, well, look, i mean, as we know periods of tensions come and go on the korean peninsula. but with these latest development, how volatile is a situation and do you expect it to get worse?
8:09 am
yes, it will get worse because the north koreans aren't going to stop. and this is really the core problem, right? i mean, every couple weeks, every few months is in the past or something. but now they're going to be like a nuclear test before the end of the year. right? i mean, all of the sort of ad. so the threats potentially at some point there's going to be some kind of break. i mean, there's going to be going need to be some kind of response, right? ideally, that would be a negotiated solution where we can get that international atomic energy me into north korea, for example, and cameras and there and exchange for i don't know, my recognition or something like that. some kind of deal that's of course payments without just trying to do. but you know, without that it is, as you said, it's just sort of a slowly, federally escalating threat that at some point could lead to a really serious outbreak. and that's really the, the concern, i mean it's, it's not going to stop. i wonder what you're basing on. i mean, could they stop once the, the military exercises come to an end, the military exercise to take place between the u. s. japan and, and tell korea sure what i meant was that over the, if you sort of look at the long arc of the, the growth of north korean missile nuclear program, right?
8:10 am
we've talked and many, many times and signed many segments and then continued build and build and build. that's re me is that you even we can get them to halt for a while. which sounds from god, for example, right. eventually when the north koreans didn't feel like they got enough at the table, they came back and started testing again, right? me, what we need is sort of like a freeze with me to actually commit and follow through and we exchange something substantial for that. and that just isn't happening. so even if they stop now, you know, for 3 months or worry about, they will probably begin again next year. got it. ok, thank you so much, robert kelly for joining us from pusan. thank you. well, the thing was held cree on the prime minister, his question to police in response to emergency calls when i holler when crush killed, more than 150 people and soul handle shoes as a thorough investigation is needed. the police released transcripts if emergency calls that show the 1st warning of a possible crush came hours before the officer released receive 10 similar calls before the chaos turn faithful. so had announced 0 denmark prime minister look set to form another coalition government after her party thought that election results
