. mass lay off. sorry about to begin at social media giant twitter. as new warner, ellen musk looks to cut the company's workforce by ha pakistan's former prime minister emron. com claims a group plotted to assassinate him. as he speaks from hospital after a gun attack. merely a 1000 migrants remain stranded in the mediterranean as many european nations reject their request to dawn. and as ukrainian troops closing on her san president vladimir virgin puts out a call for all civilians to leave the russian controlled city. i'm far as mild with all the latest of world cub news if it's president rights to all for you. 2 nations taking part to asking them to focus on football in katara and avoid political battle. ah,
9:02 pm
we begin this news hour with the large number of staff at social media giant twitter waiting to find out if they've still got jobs. as part of a mass lay off 1000000000 a lawn mask acquired the social media platform last week. the companies facing a class action lawsuit from some former employees, they say under federal law, they weren't given enough notice. they'd been fired about 7500 people work for the company based in san francisco mosque has indicated he may fire half that workforce . let's bring in rob reynolds, who joins us from san francisco. hello there, rob. what more do we know about these job cuts? well, emily, apparently the great firing has begun that twitter the accompanies employees were notified on thursday to be on the lookout for a, a. notice that there were about whether they'll have their jobs or not. but unlike
9:03 pm
in some companies in the past, then the employees who are going to be let go are not going to get a face to face termination interview. instead, they will be fired online on e mail. that is the mosque method of human resources management apparently. and many of the employees who are at risk or, or have already been locked out of the companies internal um, platforms are using quite colorful language on twitter to the, to describe what they see as a callous and impersonal way of telling him that they've lost their jobs now must completed the $44000000000.00 acquisition of the social media platform. one of the most influential in the world, by the way, ah, last week and immediately fired. ah, it's senior executives including it, c e o. the new owner says he is ultimate intention,
9:04 pm
is to take the company private. that is a complex regulatory affair that could take at least a year or more to complete. he also says he wants the of the users of twitter to pay a fee, a perhaps $20.00, perhaps $8.00 he's, he's gone back and forth a bit on that to verify their identities on twitter so that they're, they're known to be who they really say they are and not bots or trolls. and he also wants the what, however many employees ah, remain after the blood letting to stop there working from home or remote work. what he has to come back into the office and clock in just as if they were working in a factory. so this naturally as upset the employees and it's upset users as well because of because musk describes himself as a free speech. absolute ists. and the absolute best and there is fear that he will
9:05 pm
relax, standards against misinformation and hate speech on the twitter platform, which is used by so many people in government, in entertainment, politics and elsewhere. and rob, what about the state of the company financially, particularly is when hearing advertises, anal withdrawing. yeah, of musk himself tweeted that the company has suffered a massive shortfall in revenue. as a result, he said of unspecified activists pressuring advertisers. companies like general motors, general mills, audi, volkswagen and others have suspended their ads on twitter a lot. a number of of the celebrities and entertainers have left the platform saying that i want to have anything to do with it. and many analysts believe that
9:06 pm
if the of read if, if in fact twitter does relax, some of these, this content moderation involving hate speech and other controversial information or misinformation. that there will be a mass exodus of people in responsible positions who don't want to be associated with that remains to be seen, emily, but as you mentioned, there's a, there's a law suit now that's been filed on behalf of. busy employees saying that a mosque has violated the what's called the war and act which wires under federal law that the companies give 60 days notice of mass lay offs at large companies. and that there are several other lawsuits filed here in san francisco in california state court. so ah, less work for twitter employees more work for lots of lawyers in day. thank you very much for the update to rob reynolds live for us in san francisco. that brings us to our guest now and kathy creighton, who's a lawyer and director of canal
9:07 pm
a university school of industrial and labor relations. she joins us from buffalo in new york. kathy, thanks so much for being on this news. our. i want to pick up on what rob said in just a moment, but firstly, what's your initial reaction to this mass firing of twit, his staff? well, an attorney who represented workers and unions and these are really agree just acts and pretty in humane way to start your tenure out with twitter. so ilan must have, as you know, has been given multiple hundreds of millions of dollars in new york for public subsidies to start a tesla plant here in buffalo. and he never made good on his promises there. and he's not making good on his promises with his twitter employees. what's your understanding of the lawsuits that have been far what laws have been potentially
9:08 pm
violated here? for example, how much notice should work is be given if they are going to be fight. so just to understand generally in the united states of america, labor laws are usually quite weak for employees. and if i was just an employee of twitter and i was going to be laid off or just a small number, employees would be laid off. you could be laid off with no notice and no severance pay. and then you'd have to apply for unemployment in your state, which is in new york, a maximum of $500.00 a week for $26.00 weeks. when you have a mass layer or a plant closing, then there is a federal law called a warrant act that stands for the worker adjustment and retreat retraining notification act. that was passed fairly recently in the last couple decades to protect workers. so that would have a little notice from their employer and they get 60 days notice in california,
9:09 pm
if of, if 50 or more employees are laid off and the employer does not get the written. notice then employees, there's a little more haft to that law. the employees or the employer would be penalize $500.00 per day per employee. and if the employees incur any medical expense, a jury that notification time when they did not get notification, they can be paid that amount. so if there is a twitter employee who are in the next 10 days are laid off and then they suffer something catastrophic, like a cancer that is found that they have cancer and they have huge medical bills then . and then eli must could be on the hook for that. what about the fact that this is a global company? how much does the international element of things complicate workers' rights and whether or not they take legal action? well, i think it depends on where the employees are located,
9:10 pm
and in this case i believe they're located in california. so california law would apply, or i believe the california courts would take jurisdiction. so it depends where employees are located and it does make it more complicated because we have different laws that protect employees very differently throughout the throughout the world. certainly is complicated. we appreciate your insights. thank you very much. catherine creighton from a canal at university, the director of the school of industrial and labor relations. thank you. thank you . thinking for the 1st time since being shown pakistan's, former prime minister in ron khan says he believes a group of people tried to assassinate him. his p t i part he says, prime minister shop as sharif interior minister and head of intelligence services to blame. but the government denies involvement as lay a hunting report. the former prime minister m ron con, planned

but if i think civil supremacy in buckets for the people, it's very important that the voice be heard and they determine who will be the next government who will be the next to the it should not happen in the killers jewels. it should be by the board of the federal government that runs as lama bod has indicated that any deviation from approved protest plants will be met with force. leah hardy al jazeera. from all at spring in camel hotter, who is in islam a bad hello the command. what else to the him run con, say and didn't make any moves to ease the tension across the country. well, you can understand that enron con, and their supporters are angered by what happened and was either bod, on thursday, when his convoy was moving, or do i snail base toward islamabad?

9:16 pm
some mood like across the country has him run cons press conference just bolstered his support. well 1st of all, that a fascination or dam pads that created a wave of sympathy for him. so definitely didn't have a strong position. it should not be forgotten. dad, he's won a landslide rick trades on endorsed by elections that road the writing on the wall that he's become the most popular leader in the country. the ruling coalition, which consists of 1300 to go to parties, had been unable to tackle emron han, although he is a one man 40 dap august on that he can solve his problem. probably the most ball forward bought in the country right now. so that said, the lord about the government had said he's now and now in stuff that day will be broadest until those 3 people that he named awarded behind the conspiracy to

national. dave unity on friday. it's his 1st acknowledgment of how well is how the battle for her thong has become ukrainian. forces had been advancing towards the city for weeks. the russian army says more than 5000 civilians are being evacuated every day. the key is describing the move as deportation to finish the victim. now of course, those living in hillstone should be removed from the zone with the most dangerous military actions taking place. because the civilian population should not suffer from selling from the offensive counter offensive, or any other reactions connected to the ongoing military activities. and harry force, it has more from keith. there is a great deal of obscuring, of what exactly is happening in and around her son. but for some time now, russia has been urging and instructing the civilian population of that key city to full back across the river into the area of

9:29 pm
that could be some kind of a provocation that they may be trying to draw the ukrainian troops into a st battle inside her son. the crating intelligence has been talking for some time about the troops they're being reinforced. so there is a very difficult to ascertain picture around this very important city. but what is clear is that a lot of the fighting is now focused here, has been since the ukrainians announced their counter offensive back in august. still ahead on al jazeera indies capital chokes in smog. why ever winter pollution tends to be deli, and what many call a living hell. and a look behind the scenes, a cat has high tech solution to manage crabs during the world hub. fara has the details coming up in schools. ah

hello, we've got wet weather in the forecast for the middle east over the next couple of days that mainly across northern part exceeded band of trout here, all the way down across queue weight running across iran, bringing some snow there into afghanistan, a western disturbance which will gravity make its way across the far north west of, in the are more the same as we go through where sunday shall is longer. suppose if i just nothing a little further south was you, you know, to say i know them around seeing some showers just coming back in behind. a chilly, normally when setting in here. as you try up towards the events at that time dry and 5 across a good part of the arabian peninsula, but you can see some wet or whether they're into central parts of the mediterranean, affecting greece, making its way across italy. nasty little la system, this one which will bring some heavy showers to into the far north of virtue nicea, as we go through the next day or so, a brisk wind or rattling through open algeria could see some wet weather as well. much of north africa is largely dry. dental's, west africa showers,

not as intense as they have been recently, but they are still there. we'll see the shower, a standing across coastal fringes of liberia as we go through the next day or so. plenty a shout into the heart of africa where to weather, just coming into our botswana into as in bob way and also south africa. ah, the generation football me to lead players using that platform for good. the most important thing is given access to opportunities. you know, well the world can be seen in different ways and highlights how the world's most popular game is helping change lives. and communities. mall federer ation asked me to help evacuate the youth national players because their lives are at risk generation. for coming soon on al jazeera, we should do a lot more than what we do highlands, he's a crime, and we can change things. it's time for a memorable holiday with pegasus. it's time for turkey. set sail for new

already been locked out of a work email accounts, really in a long mask as why and twitter last week, pakistan's former prime minister in ron con, says he has information a group of people plan to fascinate him, has addressed the media for the 1st time since being wounded in a gun attack on thursdays and rushes, president civilians should begin to leave ukraine tests on the region, as keith troops push for the south, let me put in made the comments as he marked russia's national unity on friday. south korea military has deployed fighter jets after detecting around 180 north korean war plains me the border. it comes after a series of nissan launches by appeal yang. rob mcbride has the latest from south korea capital, sol, a lot of military aircraft activity happening the length of the korean peninsula.
9:34 pm
they're both north and south. the south korean military have announced that during the day from late morning local time through to mid afternoon here. they have been detecting flights by around 180, a military aircraft of different types in north korea. right across the, at the breadth of the north korean part of the peninsula. but some of those aircraft movements have been close enough to the dmc that separate the 2 korea to trigger the scrambling of its own south korean jets in response as a precaution. so they have announced that during the day they have a scramble, the total of 80 aircraft. they're taking to the air among them, the latest f, 35 fighter jets. now it's all of this activity from north korea and seems to be in direct response to ad drills which have been taking place jointly between south career and us air force. it's all week involving some 240 military aircraft. this is enraged at the north as it often does these joint military exercises and these
9:35 pm
fresh sanctions come of south korea as defense minister ministers on a visit to the us jung. so li met defense secretary lloyd austin on thursday as bring in the white house correspondent, kimberly helical. hello, the kimberly. what's the latest out of washington on this news? well, what i can tell you is if the white house is deeply concerned about the constant provocations that are coming out of north korea, in fact, the latest from one of the top national securities folks, people, john kirby, is that what the white house is most worried about is that these provocations for north career now happening on a daily basis. and this is something that the white house is condemning now. oh, what this is really of most of worrisome to the white house is that this is not only leading to kind of broader instability in the peninsula,
9:36 pm
but the wider region as a whole. and the feeling is this can't go on for much longer. and other words, the exact wording of the national security spokesperson is that the things are quickly approaching a tipping point. and so the question becomes, what happens then? well, the white house is taking this provocation seriously in conjunction with the is partners of allies, namely south korea and japan. and, well, the white house says that the invitation for north korea to sit down at the table to resolve this diplomatically without pre conditions, is an invitation that remains on the table so far that has been rebuffed. and so as a result with the white house, the saying is this is a simply, there is no other choice, but to step up those joint bilateral. and in some cases, trilateral military exercises. so what does that mean? what does that look like? that means this is a show for us to not only improve defense capabilities,
9:37 pm
but also to really demonstrate those defense capabilities to north korea as some sort of deterrent. and kimberly, what about what the white house it early this week about north korea allegedly supplying shells to the russian military. any further developments on those claims? well, we've been talking for some weeks now about to russia and the, the reporting that has been out there now about it getting assistance from iran. now, the latest intelligence that has recently been disc declassified appears to indicate that there is also assistance that is now coming from north korea and is coming in the form of artillery shells to russia for use in ukraine. now, what the white house is saying is that there is a lot of effort that is under way to hide the actions of this sort of per clearance . in other words, it's going through north africa. it is being funneled through the middle east,
9:38 pm
allegedly. and what we're hearing is that the numbers of artillery shells are not insignificant again, according to the national security council, but, and this is a big but what we're being told is, well, the number shelves being sent to be used in ukraine by russia is not insignificant . what we're also being told is it's not a large enough number to alter in any way the momentum of that conflict in russia's favor. appreciate the update as always. kimberly, how can our white house correspondent there? thank you. still in the us and the midterm elections are less than a week away and it's seen as the most crunch sequential vote in the generation. al jazeera speaks to 2 votes with their visions for the us are, i'm ruth delani. i just got no choice today. i am officially a us citizen. i am super excited to be participating in the voting process. this them are own my name is maureen cruz and i voted in every election that
9:39 pm
i've been eligible for that since 1970. i think if you look at globally, there's a lot going on right now, right. we only see the oil prices sort of shooting up, be see all the russia ukraine war going on at the same time. china trying to become a supercar. we have multiple problems. people don't have a living wage. housing prices are, you know, skyrocketing counterpart homes, student debt, that's an outrage to outreach. you see the inflation rates to the roof. so for us as a family that's becoming harder and harder to sustain a decent livelihood. we also see that and we are heading a lot about recession coming. there's been really a devolution of the quality of life for people in this country. and i think that's why people are on edge. you wouldn't have january 6th if people felt comfortable in their lives. and of the b, b, r, a democracy, we all should be abiding by the law and the constitution. and then there are
9:40 pm
individuals who sort of try to become more and above the constitution. i think it's, it's, it's dangerous to any democracy. people are feeling disrespected and they are our government spend disrespecting people and we need to get back to respecting our humanity. cut out his dress at jealous should never be the target of violence or killings. the comments were made to you in a meeting in vienna, marking 10 years since it released its action plan for the safety of the profession . 35 journalists have been killed while working this year alone. one of them was al jazeera is sharina abu clare, the palestinian american, was shot dead by israeli forces, while on assignment in the occupied west bank. back in may, members of the international community have condemned her killing and continue to call for an investigation. 22 children from greenland where tank into denmark's capital, copenhagen not for

often children into members of a more than grey land, but not all of them were orphans. when they arrived in copenhagen, some were sent to an orphanage and others to force their families. journalist unacquainted chin herman says the experiment was part of a danish scheme in the 1950s to maintain control over his former arctic colony. so the plan was to show the rest of the world that greenland was a natural part of denmark and needed to remain part of denmark through integration rather than autonomy. and this is where the children come into the picture. helena spent almost 2 years in denmark. she was told never to use gray land dick language . and when she later went home, she struggled to communicate with her family members. why didn't she answer me? and a little after she says, i'm sorry and said something. and it was like my life
