1:01 pm
but it says it was before the war in ukraine. and insist key should provide evidence they've been used in the conflict. a lot mosque lashes out as twitter loses major advertisers after mass lay offs cause concern over its future. north korea fires more missiles into the sea and the u. s. and south korea carry out joint military drills and supporters of pakistan's, former prime minister in miami con, call for nationwide protests as he accuses the government of trying to kill him. and his full liverpool manager, yoga coff has backed fif, is played to keep politics out of the cattle world. cup club says it's unfair to expect plays to comments on matters other than football during the tournaments. ah, aaron's foreign minister says his country sold military drones to russia,
1:02 pm
but they were sent before ukraine was invaded. cave has repeatedly accused iran of supplying russ, so we so called kamikaze drones to bomb ukrainian cities and energy facilities. taxonomy says ukraine should provide evidence. western allies have also said, members of iran's revolution regard for have been sent to ukraine to train russians to operate the drones both times with russia, a based on mutual interest. this height that some western countries states against iran, saying that iran has said missiles and drones to be used in the ukraine war. i would say that it is totally false about missiles, but about drones. it is true. we sent a number of drones months before the ukraine war. we agreed with the cranium, foreign minister that if they have any evidence to prove that russia has used any iranian during the war that can provide us with it was a what our iran's shock had 136 or kamikaze drones. well, the small unmanned aircraft that carry explosives that are designed to strike
1:03 pm
behind enemy lines. and unlike traditional military drones, they're destroyed in the attack. kamikaze drones are also relatively cheap and about $20000.00 each compared to millions for traditional zone drone or dosa giovanni's intact. and let's go live to her and i want more to be know about about what's been going on. well, the reigning foreign minister went on to say at guides, the reigning government sent a delegation to a european country 2 weeks ago where they were supposed to meet with the ukrainian counterparts, where they were going to be provided evidence by the officials from kiev, about these drones being used, the foreign minister am you're up to like young said that the ukrainians never showed up. and he attributed that to the most likely as a result of pressure from the u. s. government as well as germany who are looking to impose further sanctions on her on around the sale of these drones to russia.
1:04 pm
you're a new foreign minister said that they are still waiting to see concrete evidence. but he didn't say that they have a very long and outstanding, a security alliance with russia. and that, that he's the sale of these drones had been 3 treat plans before the invasion began on february 24th. those are what does this mean for the conflict? generally, well, it means that iran is in more of a situation that it needs to defend itself yet again on the international community . because the reigning positions so far and told today had been that they have not sold these drones to the russian government to be used in the war in ukraine. now they are clarifying their position today, but it means that there is a possibility that the sanctions we've seen and posed already on their own because of the issue of these drones by the european union as well as the british government. there is a possibility that they could shut the matter further and there was talk by the
1:05 pm
french officials that this sale of these drones violates the nuclear agreements of 2015. there is a loss, lucian, united nations security council resolution $2231.00 which at bands the sale of advanced military technology and hardware by the iranian officials to the international committee. until october 2023. there was already an arms embargo under, on 120 a, 2007 that was listed as part of the nuclear agreement in october of 2020. now, the position of western governments is that this sale is a violation of their remaining restrictions. the iranians will most likely see things differently because he's just mentioned are not very advanced at technology, they're suicide drones. so whether or not they're in violation of the nuclear agreement is an issue that will likely come up in the coming weeks. for now, the ratings are saying that this is an issue, they're still waiting for the hard evidence and that they maintain their position
1:06 pm
that there were not provided recently to the russian government. those had your body in tougher on dawson. thank you. russian president vladimir putin says civilians, it should leave ukraine's household region. as the ukrainian army pushes farther south, it's the 1st time he's admitted how volatile the battle for the area has become. i said big has visited a village in house on it was really taken by ukrainian forces last month, bytes, resident, se, memories of the russian occupation a still vivid. we still don't know what's exactly going on with her son offensive. but what we have heard is that the ukrainian military has taken back a village to day. why is that significant? well, when the ukrainians take back of small village or tan, what lay the head of them are open fields, which means the russians have to retreat a considerable distance to get cover and it also means ukrainians can move their to re forward and strike at a great distance now this village in her son was taken back by the ukrainians a month ago,
1:07 pm
but this school was hit just last week. now what that shows is that even though the russians may be retreating, the still able to strike targets an infrastructure at a considerable distance with their missiles replied, he eagerly think the nick will. we spoke to people in this village and they told us about their experiences whilst the russians were here. no way of what america end. i do not understand what kind of randoms russians can have during the war. yes, under the muzzles of machine guns, no. from on each street, several soldiers with machine guns accompanied people, forcing them to what were you and there's up there and i can get her out. this is a grad rocket. it destroyed everything, killed my ducks. after diblasio, i was pulling them out from under the rubble. hm. yeah. yeah. because the animals who, oh, nice yoke wish i survived world war 2, but i never thought that the russians will attack us. they were here, i saw them. they walked in every house and i wanted to say so much to them, but my son stopped me. he said,
1:08 pm
don't say anything to them. they will kill us. and again, although this village is taken back a month ago, we're still hearing constant artillery shelling and missiles being fired overhead and also the russians firing back. so although people here trying to return to life as normal as it was before the russians were here, the war is still ongoing. north korea's being accused of launching for more missiles, the latest in the series this week. earlier, the u. s. were set to fly a nuclear capable supersonic bomber over south korea. as part of a joint aerial exercise involving hundreds of warplanes. it was a shore force against showing young tony chang is lifers in so. so another round of missiles from north korea, tony? indeed sir, the announcement came a couple of hours ago from the joint chiefs of staff here in south korea, saying that just before midday, local time for short range, ballistic missiles were fired from north korea to the west. they travelled the
1:09 pm
distance of about a 130 kilometers before falling into the sea. it's clearly a reaction to, to the escalation we've seen initially with the north korean ballistic missile tests. then the escalation over these military exercises ariel military exercises, which have been happening over the last few days in which the americans have extended by day, much to the ira, north careers, foreign ministry, they release the statement last night. we've seen these 4 more test firings today. i think the hope is that now that the, the south korean american aerial exercises are finished, that might bring an end to what we've seen as quite an escalation of tuscan tensions in the region. but it remains to be seen. i think some military analysts here in solar expecting further developments from north korea in the next couple of days. interior one point the u. s. was planning to fly a plane capable of carrying
1:10 pm
a nuclear bomb. most part of the military exercises. how much of north korea's actions is a response to the u. s. particularly in all of this? well, i think we've seen 2 u. s. reactions. in the last couple of those, we've seen the diploma from the diplomatic from they've organized condemnation in the united nations in the us ambassador to the united nations, particularly pointing at russia and china for not condemning these tests. and she made the point that this year alone, there have been twice as many a missile tests as there have been in the past. so clear escalation there. but we've also seen the united states military kind of reacting to north careers, her actions as well and, and not backing away as perhaps they might have done in the past. stepping up the actions in the a, you made a reference there to the b one bombers. 2 of those were involved in the exercises
1:11 pm
today. it's a long range bomber capable of carrying nuclear weapons. and that again will have an angered north korea even more. i think the americans are not backing down at this stage. they're answering every reaction with a reaction that's a tit for tat situation. the problem, i think, for many people in the region is that a lot of these exercises have been stopped since 2017. the corso is the pandemic in between. things had had really attention said simmered down a lot and now that tension is returning. i think, for people watching in this region. that's a real concern that everything that's happening here. it with getting a tit for tat response. and every time that happens, attentions increased slightly. and at this stage i think they're concerned that could really push things over the edge of talking to some soul that tony chang. tony, thank you very much indeed. put his new owner in mosques as is content,

moderation will not be impacted by heavy job losses on friday. online, campaigners are concerned that changes that the company could result in the spread of disinformation and hate speech. several multi $1000000000.00 companies of suspended their advertising bundles is more from twitter headquarters in san francisco. just one week after buying twitter, ellen musket gutted its workforce firing up to half of its 7500 employees at twitter headquarters in san francisco. there were no laid off workers filing out clutching boxes of their personal effects. all the firings were done by email. some employees tweeted in colorful language denouncing what they see as a callous and impersonal method of termination in the tank creed and very tense environment at twitter and social media is really all about creativity. employees have filed lawsuits against twitters new ownership saying the mass firing violates federal and state laws requiring 60 days advance notice and severance payments.
1:13 pm
musk fired all twitter senior executives last week. as soon as he bought the company for $44000000000.00, musk also says he wants to charge users a subscription fee to have their identities verified on the platform, which has outraged many users. must describes himself as a free speech, absolutist who and fears that twitter will relax its moderation under his management, allowing hate speech and misinformation to flourish has led prominent advertisers, including general motors, pfizer, audi volkswagen, and others to suspend advertising on the platform. experts also expect elite users in politics, entertainment, and other fields will flee twitter in droves if it's standards on hate speech or misinformation are relaxed. major leaders, and especially people within government can't be associated with that on,
1:14 pm
on any social media platform among that nature. and so they, they will be forced to leave. the platform by whoever is, is managing them must tweeted on friday, the twitter has suffered a massive drop in revenue, which he blamed on unnamed activists pressuring ad tigers. musk says he wants to take twitter into private ownership so that its shares would no longer be publicly traded, and it would no longer be subject to federal securities regulation. that's a complicated regulatory process that could take years to accomplish. and with all of the lawsuits already filed, it all means plenty of work for lawyers, even as thousands of twitter employees are now out of a job. rob reynolds al jazeera san francisco, and i speak to steven o'leary. he's the founder of lisco. it's a social media analysis companies. joining us live from dublin. good to have you with us on al jazeera or to ask you about these companies pulling their advertising
1:15 pm
. first of all, what are the most worried about as elan, moscow's the other stuff? if mosque here of the are known, and i think there's been an awful lot of speculation last 6 months since this story really starting to emerge about what would happen on the platform. and if you're an advertiser, you need to be confident that when you're at a peers, a peers along the st content that is okay. and a big fear right now is with the mass of job losses that have taken place. are there gonna be enough people there to moderate the content and ensure that when those ads do appear, they appear along st. content that is okay for advertisers to be seen next to what's your analysis of what the state of twitters reputation after all of this? no doubt that it's going to be hurt, but it's not it's heart bind to do direct association with mosque, but i think on the other side it's important to remember that an awful lot of the high profile people on the platform, politicians during this media, celebrities sport stars, they have huge following their huge audiences and commercially,
1:16 pm
those audiences are extremely important to them. so i think some of the speculation that there's going to be a mass exodus from the platform. and it's a little early today that we've seen in the past, for example, serious boy cost processes put in place against like facebook and other social networks. and they caused the spike, but they've disappeared. doctorate. and i think it's far too early at this point to say that twitter isn't really serious, long term trouble. i want to get an idea from you what you think the social media market looks like and didn't try to still carry the the half if you like. but it did previously. it does. and i think the mission over here is that the size of the audience is the key thing. i mean, relative like a facebook, it doesn't have billions of users, but the people who do use it are incredibly influential. and really there is no other network in the world that deals with breaking news and real time information and the way the twitter does. there isn't another network that everyone could just
1:17 pm
leave, enjoy and have the exact same experience. so that the heavy reliance on us. yes, it been damaged and yet it with a question faces challenges. but there is a potential positive outcome here to there is a chance for twitter to become a better version of itself to see more innovation become the platform that has been a huge amount of harm done in the last 7 days. and a lot of that will have to be reversed and improved. but i will be competent and hopeful that we may see an improved version of twitter in the years to come. we've obviously seen the social media landscape change and more over the last few years, particularly companies coming company's going, how do you see it moving forward? do you see that this is a beginning of a process where rather than having these behemoth, if you like of companies on social media, we are beginning to see some sort of fragmentation. if people feel that they're not getting what they want from the social media services and the apps that they have your question, i think there's
1:18 pm
a challenge here because you need to have significant audiences. if you want to use content and you want to be seen by many people if possible, well then by default you want to be on a network that's got hundreds of millions or billions of users. but equally, if you're a platform that's got billions of users trying to create something that cater to everybody's extremely challenging, i think the biggest challenge that all of the platforms say at the moment did around this idea of moderation and regulations. because there's been huge advancements in terms of what technology can do in this space and the automated removal of paint speech and other things. you're still highly reliant on individual moderators to step in quite off to make judgment calls on what should or shouldn't be on the platforms. and that's all gonna lead to division. you're going to have it on the left and the rice. and i think really for almost every major social network, moderation is going to be the key challenge they face and the next 12 to 24 months . really interesting because we'll talk from the steven or larry, we appreciate you being with us and all the data. thank you very much. indeed.

a staggering 300 percent. maximilian hess as a fellow at the fallen policy research institute and the author of the forthcoming book, economic war, ukraine, and the global conflict between russia and the west. these joining us from london. thank you very much. indeed for being with us or on al jazeera, let me ask you about the, the sanctions, the expectations that russia has. why would russia expect that a would be able to get these sanctions lifted at this point? thank you for having me. russia really has to intense from this position. one is that it wants to have the sanctions east on. it also has bank the key agricultural bank and then also is seeking to have ukraine approval. ready resumption of exports of ammonia through the pipeline that runs from russia through hockey, all the way down to, or in the odessa region. it's reason for wanting this is to fall in wants to earn more foreign currency and keep the trade open. and secondly,
1:34 pm
it wants to show that it is able to puncture holes in the sanctions regime. so that for trade partners such as india and turkey are nervous about the growing threat of secondary sanctions from washington in particular, that it is able to demonstrate that work. because of our actions, we're actually able to lessen the sanctions effectiveness and try to turn the tide on them. we were talking just a moment ago about the increasing trade between china, india, and turkey. perhaps, given what you just said and given the out the allies that russia has, that's not a surprise. what did surprise them? i'm just so you one of the graphics now. belgian trade with belgium and russia up 81 percent trade with the netherlands up 32 percent. why are countries choosing to do this? particularly given the fact that russia is at war in ukraine and the e, you particularly has a stance on this? certainly, well, a lot of these numbers have been inflated by russia's own actions in the economic world. sure to cause turbulence in grain and gas markets in particular. so the
1:35 pm
value of the gas the russia was exporting, and particularly in the 1st 6 months of this year, went way, way up. so that increased a lot of those figures, but overall trade with is certainly being impacted. we're seeing a move away from russia's get russian gas again, due to its own threats and demands, which resulted in a halt of most exports on the yama, europe pipeline. of course, to see the incidents on the north stream, one in north stream 2 pipelines. so these headline figures are temporary, whereas russia, real trade partners in the west, the long term basis for that is pretty much gone as we look to the 6 months now and in the 6 months and next year. so obviously sanctions remain which the overall sanctions regime, which i expect certainly will do. so those figures will come down even though even if gas and oil prices or may not give us some context here because, i mean, this is something, this is this kind of warping wife that we're seeing in trade. is this something that normally happens in times of conflict?
1:36 pm
it certainly happens in times of conflict going all the way back to history sanctions. blockades have been used by states are since ancient mesopotamia and ancient greece given what is different and what is particularly different in this conflict between say, the cold war and now is that over the 20 and 30 years, a russian post soviet experience, it had really been built into the global economic infrastructure, whether that be banking or the construction of new gas pipelines, the development of trade languages. so these interdependencies allow both sides to weaponized them against one another. and in a globalized era, that is going to be a key form of conflict or war by other means for civil future. both with russia and intentions, between other great powers. given the sensitive interdependency that you're talking about, and i understand what you mean about the situation or developing as the conflict goes on, is that a risk? however, that if we see figures like that, the trade with belgium, the trade with,
1:37 pm
with anette and so on. but those figures could be used essentially, to almost normalize the war to give the impression by one side or the other. certainly, perhaps russia, that this conflict is on going. this is what life is like. now when we might as well just keep doing business. well, i think for russia is undergoing a real transformation of its own political economy. it's going from a market state with autocratic features, but one in which there still has been a normal or relatively normal operation of industry. one best one, to now a whole are tarkey in which the kremlin determines everything increasingly re shuffles. the ownership of all the guard said no, i don't think russia will be a place that businesses normal can be done. certainly for western partners any time soon. probably as long as remains empower. maximilian has we really appreciate your business being with us here on out there. so thank you very much for your time.
