millions in the us voting mid term elections that will decide the balance of power in congress and the future of president jo biden's agenda. the main issues dominating the po, rising inflation and women's reproductive rights after the top court overturned the right to a bush. ah, well, i'm fully back to bo, this is al jazeera live from doha. will have extensive coverage of the u. s. made terms with live reports, my correspondence across the country also ahead celebrations. as italy allows several migrants rescued in the mediterranean to disembark. but another ship is denied port. and we are the premier of a new film about a group of footballers all hoping to be selected to play at the thief a welcome. ah,
2:02 am
thank you very much for joining as we begin in the united states where voters are streaming to the poles in one of the most consequential mid term elections in years . nationwide control of congress and the future of present jo biden's agenda hang in the ballads. all 435 seats in the house of representatives are up for grabs. prior to the vote, democrats had 8 more seats than republicans. 35 of the senates, 100 seats are being contested right now. they're evenly divided. so a change of control in just one seed could put the republicans in charge and the balance of power is expected to come down to the battle ground fates of nevada, arizona, georgia, and pennsylvania. where we have several correspondence reporting on these elections for, as john henderson is in atlanta, georgia gateway, elizondo is in pittsburgh, pennsylvania. i white house correspondent kimberly hawk it is standing by in
2:03 am
washington dc. but 1st we go to alan fish on capitol hill. so alan, what are we watching for as a result, stop coming in and just a few hours. what are the early bad weather to watch the yearly places you go to keep an eye on for me. the 1st one is the indiana 1st congressional district. my know assigned to exciting is one of the places where they will close the polls. adderly at the last time the election was held, the democratic congressman won by 3 points at the that the dynamics of slightly moving there. and if he loses to the republican, then it could be a very long night for the democrats. we're also going to look at virginia 2 seats in the south of the state and one a closer to washington d. c. at the, the democratic congresswoman there early laria and jennifer wax them is the one near washington dc and abigail spun burger, all considered reasonably moderate by many people. and if they lose them,
2:04 am
we know we are facing a potential red wave and it's almost certain then that the republicans are going to win in the house. as for the senate, at 1st view will be really at new hampshire. maggie hassan is the, the sitting democratic senator there. she's up against that. michael don bolduc who's considered to be extreme right wing full of conspiracy theories as well as to the democrats really wanted to face. but he's done a lot better over the last few days than many people expected, and that is going to be a very tight race if he winds, than the democrats really faced, the prospect of losing the senate as well. and then you move down to philadelphia, pennsylvania, and also into georgia itself. if the democrats can at least hold one of those seats, they already hold the one in georgia, they're trying to unseat as trying to win the one in philadelphia, pennsylvania. because that was held by republican who is now retired. if they can hold just one of those seats,
2:05 am
then it means that everything will then switch to arizona and nevada much later in the evening. but to was of the early bell weathers to keep an eye on to find out whether or not their sweat waived is going to crush over the bite and white house. and we will be, of course, checking in with you throughout the evening. i adam fisher on capitol hill there. let's just go a few kilometers away from where alan is and speech our white house correspondent, kimberly hawk at. kimberly present biden and the democrats will be watching the returns anxiously. i imagine because suppose a not looking good for them. that's right. what we've been told is that the president has spent the last few hours making calls in to some radio stations targeting minority communities trying to get in these final hours. the last few voters to go to the polls and cast a ballot in his favor. but now as these polls are closing here in the east coast, and in the coming hours out to the west, the president, we understand we'll be watching these returns as they come in with his senior advisors. and we know that we expect the to on wednesday, he may, in fact,
2:06 am
address the nation appealing for patience as these boats are continuing to be tallied because again, we expect that it may be some time before we get a final results. now, in terms of this final result, this is where some of the complications come in, given the fact that the president has said democracy is on the line. and many people have argued that the longer this result takes the more that there have been questions about the result. you remember that in 2020, of course, the president saying that there are many candidates who have questioned those results and may do so again. and so that is what we expect will also be the president's message. but in terms of the voting that's taking place right now. and his agenda going forward here, and certainly the president and his advisors feeling very nervous. and i was going to ask you about that. kimberly what happens if there is a massive red wave as is being predicted. what happens to present binds agenda to
2:07 am
his potential run in 2024 is while well, the white house insist that the president is going to run again in 2024. but you're right. this is really very much a referendum on the president's past 2 years where he's had a very ambitious agenda. he's put forward very, a bold climate change legislation, expand of the social safety net. and if the public really turned their back on that votes in favor of the republican message of the inflation, the economy, and cutting government spending, this is going to make it very difficult for the president. but at the same time, despite his advanced age, the white house says that they are moving forward, they are confident they will still be able to achieve what the president has set out to do in the final 2 years of this 1st term. and they say that no matter what the result of this vote, they still are going to press ahead. kimberly, thank you for that. kimberly hawk it is our white house correspondent. as we

mentioned, one of the battle ground states to watch ace pennsylvania gave lily saunders tracking developments force in pittsburgh joins us now live pennsylvania. gabe is democrats top pickup opportunity for the senate? yeah, that's right. this is expected to be a very close race here in pennsylvania. some of the last polls showed that both of the 2 senate candidates, the republican in the democrat, were tied at 46 percent. there's 2 hours left in voting here in pennsylvania. and then we will start to see some of the results start to roll in and get an idea how this evening is going to progress. on the republican side, you have trump backed celebrity physician or dr. met met oz. he's never held elected office before and on the side of the democrats, you have the new tenant governor john federal and there are 2 candidates, are really polar opposites. the republican oz is a very smooth talking politician if you will,
2:09 am
who is right of center, but it's been a trying to appeal to more independent voters in the closing weeks of this campaign . and on the left you have the tenant government, governor federal min, who's appealing to the working class voters here. that's what he's trying to been a p, appealing to betterment held a big lead over the summer. but the republican has caught up and essentially made this a dead heat in the last month of the campaign, outside groups of port in more than $115000000.00 in political advertising here. now in terms of voters, many say that they say the top issues are the economy and abortion. but as we found out, as we spoke to a lot of voters, there's another issue that is top of mind as well. take a listen. many voters say the economy and high gas prices are top issues in the
2:10 am
selection. but for karen and saloon attempts to overturn the 2020 presidential election means for her. this mid term election is about whether or not democracy survives in america. democracy is now definitely on the ballot, not the norm really matters. the economy won't matter if the price of gas won't matter if we don't have our representative, legal, government and power. nothing else, no matter except democracy except democracy. yes. i think it's under threat. absolutely. many voters told us defending democracy was top of their list of issues . they're voting for on tuesday. but why now? it all stems from january 6th, 2021. that's when supporters of donald trump storm the u. s. capital to try to prevent congress from certifying the election results. since then,
2:11 am
trump has repeatedly said falsely that it was a rig election. but those false claims of a stolen election have spread far and wide to republican candidates running in these midterm elections. and voters here in pennsylvania don't need to look too far to see it for themselves. meet doug master yano. he was among the trump supporters who stormed the capitol grounds on january 6th. while he didn't go inside the capital itself and hasn't been charged with a crime, he has become a central figure in supporting trumps efforts to overturn the 2020 election date. now he's on the ballot tuesday running for governor in pennsylvania. and political scientists say candidates like him are the reason why many voters say democracy is top of mind. the going to the balls the fight for our system or government, the fight going to a lie care. that's who respect the integrity of elections. who believe that when
2:12 am
the people speak at elections, of those votes should be honored? those vote should be fall, they should not be thrown out by elected officials or, or candidates who have said the outcome. it's i think that's what's on a lot of voters minds when they say the democrats hoping that will be all it takes to win enough races to keep control of congress. gabriel's ando al jazeera, pittsburgh, and now to another battle ground states, georgia. john henderson is in atlanta for is there's about an hour to go, i believe you're a john until the poles goes in georgia. tell our viewers why this state is so crucial in these midterms. will georgia is critical to both parties because it can determine which party winds the senate and that happened last time around in 2020 or in that election cycle.
2:13 am
there was actually in january because there was a run off that time around. and in that case, one of the senators who won was rafael war, knocked the 1st black senator from georgia. also a pastor who preaches at the pulpit once preached at by the reverend martin luther king. now, this time he's running against herschel walker, a popular university of georgia football star. back in the day, the republicans were looking for someone with name recognition, who could raise money, and that's who they found. and both sides have been pumping money into this race, or $250000000.00 nearly that has been spent on television advertisements. if you turn on your tv here, it is unavoidable. and there are 2500000 people who voted in advance that's considerably more than did so in 2018. so there's a lot of interest in this raise. and one reason is that, and there's been a number of disclosures about herschel walker, the republican that had been damaging to him over the course of the campaign. he's
2:14 am
anti abortion. but to ex girlfriends have claimed that he pressured them into having abortions. and he has said that african american men need to spend more time with their families. well, over the course of the campaign, it was disclosed, and he acknowledged that he has 3 illegitimate children. he does not spend time with. and so the ads have been nasty on that front and the ads on the other side coming from the herschel walker campaign of targeted warnock and brought up an old allegation from his ex wife saying that he ran over her foot during an argument so nasty ads they disagree on immigration, abortion. a number of issues with the voters seemed to care the most about inflation. and that seems to be why this race is a dead heat right now. and there's one crew point. if neither of them gets 50 per cent, this raise goes to run off in december. that's what happened last time around. and it could happen yet again, because in very few of the polls that have come up before their selection has
2:15 am
either of them gotten 50 percent, partly because there is a 3rd party candidate. john, thank you for that. john hendrick life or is there a in atlanta, georgia and of course we're bringing the latest on the results in atlanta and georgia. the state as a whole throughout the evening here on out sierra. and he spent more analysis on the midterm is coming up and also a head on the program. a call for a political activist in egypt to be released is been on hunger strike for 7 months . and you have to be in it to win it. and now someone has one lucky person is now $2000000000.00 reach. it will have the latest on the payout in the us power lottery . ah

is developing threats, the bahamas and eventually the east coast of the us, particularly florida. and that's nicole. now that will also bring temperatures day, which account very hard, for example, new york and down towards new orleans. it's 6 degrees above average, still in texas. so this part of the us still looking a bit like late summer, further west, early winter, the tempted to come down could sick with complete the snows on its way in, and i suspect is going to be well, blizzard conditions, retirement, sierra nevada. nicole might briefly touch her hurricane force winds on its way through the bahamas just below this particular time, which is some time late on wednesday. but the rain is the risk. i think maybe the storm surge given the bahamas are islands. the same is true on the coast of florida in south america, the picture house with a big showers recently, but they tend to be a little bit less heavy than they were. there was to let risk a western columbia from pretty warm and east neck would open, i think the shower per pates of that and then towards rio, silex,

occasionally sheri bar a day if you jump further south. so temperatures are actually something of a story. 29 or so on the east coast of argentina above where it should be. but with some spring shells coming in. ah, in 1958 charles de gaulle made a famous speech in algeria. ah, but he could not hold back the tide about jerry and independence. all keep francis colonies in africa and the pacific. in the final episode of the series, al jazeera explores how the long and bitter fight for the french empire still resonates today. reluctant is french, the colonization on al jazeera lou .
2:18 am
ah, you're watching al jazeera alive from doha. a reminder of our main story this. our americans are voting and crucial mid term elections, which good? see the democrats lose control of congress? offending the rest of present. jo biden's presidency at stake, all 435 seats in the house of representatives and 35 seats in the senate. home suggests republicans will take for house, but the res, to control the senate looks tighter, coming down to close elections in the states of pennsylvania, georgia, arizona, and nevada. meanwhile, a study by the brookings institution shows that 345 candidates on the congressional ballot back. donald trump's false claim that the 2020 presidential election was flawed. or for more in these midterms that saw speak to joshua politic who's
2:19 am
a former diplomatic executive director at the pima county. democratic party is joining us from tucson in the state of arizona. thank you very much for being with us. the arizona, as we know became a hot spot for election misinformation in the wake of the 2020 presidential race 2 years on. it's the merge as a key battle ground for support. as a former president, trump and founded claims at the pool was marked by fraud. tell us, 1st, if you can, how the races in your state are shaping up so far. right. so as you know, are there is no we have one of the sites of us senate races here with senator mark kelly running for a full terms to serve and mark john mccain the. we also have races across the board for governor attorney general secretary of state and we expect these races to come down to the wire. last time they're decided by the margin of about $10000.00 and both re fax it to be as close the closer the time around. and i
2:20 am
just have to say that i've spent the last month or so knocking on doors canvassing for my for my candidates. and we did not see a single republican candidate there in the entire month that we were out there. candidate my, my 8 year old and i have will be an issue so far in the voting in arizona because some republican candidates have said that they wouldn't accept the results if it didn't go their way. i mean, that is the main issue is you have people running in this election who refused to abide by the constitutional order and the rules and many cases rules that they made themselves. one of the things are going to here is that there's a so called red wave in which people that vote in person on election day, they're both accounted for. and then those that are counted absent in by mail. the get counted later that's done on purpose. the republican legislature and the
2:21 am
republican governor put that into law here in arizona. and so we are a state were traditionally about 80 percent of voters, both by mail and this election. we think it's going to, there's going to be a pretty big spread between the democrats, the democratic cleaning independence, and the republicans where the majority of voters from both parties are still going to vote by mail. but it's going to be closer to say 90 percent of the democrats and more like 6065 percent of the republicans. it may be before we know the actually it could be up to 24 hours and if it's a really tight race and it comes down to reach answer could be up to a week here in arizona. i looking at the big picture now. rarely has an election involved the 2 parties talking about such different things. inflation in the economy, more abortion, whites, and democracy in arizona. of course, a place where republicans out number democrats and where independence really matter
2:22 am
. i want to ask you about the democratic messaging. do you think it was a right messaging for, for democrats to focus on why not matter on these things or that matters to most voters in that is the economy in their pocket books? well, i think that's the issue we've been hitting on here in arizona. katy hob running for governor and mark kelly have really strapped the issues that matter to the every day voters air and the say, we have a date were republicans that had basically unilateral control for almost 3 decades . we did have a democratic governor for a few years in the early 2000 and, but basically the republicans have been in charge. they're the ones who own this broken economy here in the state. and we've been really hammering on that. they've refused to invest in education, refused to invest in infrastructure and refuse to invest in the working class. they are in arizona. and that's the message that we've been hammering home has the democratic party that we're the party that's going to invest in the working person
2:23 am
. we're the party is going to invest in our children and our, and the education system in our state. and the republicans really don't have accounts or methods they're trying to play on here. they're trying to base their election purely on appealing to people worried by but not really the responsibility that they've been the ones in charge in the state for over 12 years. thank you for talking to us and sharing your views. joshua, paula check a former executive director of the pima county democratic party in the state of arizona. thank you. and our special election coverage begin just under 2 hours that 0100 gmc on wednesday. we'll have correspondence across the us to break down all the results, explain what it means for those in america. and also why the midterms matter to the rest of the world. we hope you to stay with us for that. let's turn our attention now to our the world news and violence has broken out at democracy demonstrations in to dance capital protesters in cartoon up to the streets,
