a tight race for the u. s. congress has poles close in the midterm election being called the most important in a generation. we are gonna take the house back. oh, republicans are confident they're going to take control of the house of representatives. but there are several races still to be decided. ah, roberson, this is al jazeera live from doha. also coming up at least 9 people have been killed in an overnight attack in democratic republic of congo. several vehicles in the houses have been burned. we're going to take you inside a bunker in central ukraine where people are preparing for cold winter and more power outages. ah, ali results in the us midterm polls are in
11:02 am
a close fight for control of congress pulls of closed across the country and what's being called the most consequential election in a generation. tens of millions of people turned out to vote on tuesday for congressional state and local races. the outcomes gonna affect what president joe biden's administration can achieve in the next 2 years. rosalind jordan reports 1st votes in the us, mid term elections are being counted. the turning point for control of congress and president jo biden's agenda in the next 2 years. voters say the country is in serious trouble. i with her think owner around us inflation and crime. no, it's huge. it's usually her only going to get worse than they could change. her whole voting system is going to be on the line here. if we don't win the governorship, for instance, and if we don't have the least some majority in this, in the senate. i mean it's, it's us critical. after republican spent months suggesting democrats were trying to
11:03 am
steal the election, the justice department deployed lawyers to more than 60 cities to insure there weren't any problems counting the vote. machine problems caused delays and arizona's largest county, but a judge reject it. republicans bid to extend voting hours. meantime, joe biden campaigns were democrats hoping they could help him boost his economic policies and his likely reelection campaign to de rephrase the inflection point. one of those moments comes on every 3 or 4 generations. we know in our bones or mockers is at risk and we know that this is your moment to defend it. but democrats hopes died early in florida, where republicans now control all of the top state wide seeks. we will never ever surrender to the woke bob horta as well. oh, or country flounders,
11:04 am
due to failed leadership in washington. florida is on the right track. former president donald trump promised to take credit for any g o. p victories. and on tuesday night, he did just that, the wonder what biden would do right down, but it's likely elections. officials will need days to confirm results in several key states such as georgia, pennsylvania, nevada, and ohio, rosalind jordan, l. g 0. 1 of the races most recently called is in the swing state of pennsylvania. democrat, john veterans defeated republican mehmet alls, the celebrity tv, doctor, veterans out a stroke in may just days before the primary. we have the line i never expected that we were going to turn these red counties blue where we did well, we needed to do and we had that conversation across every one of those counties.
11:05 am
internally. that's why i'll be the next us senator from pennsylvania. gerber alexander's in pittsburgh, and he explains why the win in pennsylvania has been so important for democrats. this is the 1st i flipped state in this election in this mid term in the senate race. that means it's either the democrats or the republicans. this is the 1st time tonight that either of the 2 parties has been able to flip. one was previously republican, now is democrat. this was a hard fought campaign. it was very close. and no one could really predict how this was going to go. but now with this race being called for john fedor, men, this puts the democrats in the control or in the driver's seat, if you will, to potentially remain in control of the u. s. senate, it's not there yet,
11:06 am
but this is a big step in that direction. for the democrats, this was a very hard fight campaign. as i mentioned, john fedor, men a the lieutenant governor. ah, he had a stroke just 6 months ago. he almost lost his life. he almost died from it. he was taken off the campaign trail for many months while he recovered to regain his health. and he had a big lead in the summer. but that was so whittle down in the last several weeks. and the polls indicated that this was a dead heat with both candidates tied at 46 per cent. and it appeared that his opponent, the republican trump, uh, backed up celebrity dr. met oz was actually had a lot of the momentum in the last couple weeks of this campaign. and so the fact that fedor men was able to pull this out and secure this senate seat for the democrats is a huge, huge victory of,
11:07 am
for the democrats. well as others in pennsylvania, let's take a look at where things stand. can it overall? well, republicans are the projected winners in all the senate rates. all these areas that you can see in red here, north carolina, of course, in florida. the big swing states that have gone republican democrats are projected winners in all the blue states. now the yellow states, they are the ones that have still got to be decided, but also that they are swing states and the predictable ones amongst the, the democrats were of course oregon, new york, illinois, connecticut, maryland, and vermont. but as i say, everything in yellow is still being contested. those are the crucial swing states, which were still watching lead. meanwhile, republican say that they are on track to take control of the house of representatives is not unusual for the incumbent party to lose a host during mid terms that have 435 seat up for grabs. in total, $218.00 i needed for control. as you can see here, republicans have got
11:08 am
a 198 at the moment. democrats of got a 167. now if the g o p does take the house republican house, minority leader, kevin mccarthy can be nominated for the role of speaker is already celebrated the results if you will, even freedom, hard work and the american dream. these results proved that there is a place for you and the republican party. ah, no. tonight. we build upon those games 2 years ago. and it is clear that we are gonna take the house back. oh gail, from our list. we're going to go to the white house and bring in my cana might so kevin mccarthy saying that they're on track in order to take out the house that they're going to take the house back. but this is not the majority that many republicans were hoping for. well,
11:09 am
it's certainly not the majority that the minority house speaker was hoping for, though he's putting the the best based on what largely has been a disappointing night for many republicans who had been seeing a massive red wave to sweep through the nation rest in control of the house and also resting control of the senate. well, they may still be on track to take control of the house, but the senate is a really tight race. may only be resolved, come to some of the 6 been run off elections. we heard from the majority speak of the house, nancy pelosi, a short while ago. she's still saying that she believes that the democrats can maintain control of the house pelosi winning yet again, very handily, her seat in california. so certainly the democrats have reason to be satisfied, although they are trailing in so many how seats the republicans having got it, would appear those 5 democrats seats they needed to, to,
11:10 am
to take control of the house. but at the same time we've heard from president biden, in the course of the evening, he tweeted out to picture of him speaking to some of the winners in the various races. he was smiling, looking very cheerful, given the circumstances. and it seems, although the lights of the white house are out behind me now, less than 40 minutes ago, he was texting the went up the senatorial race in pennsylvania. so certainly as need of the democratic party, president biden appears to be satisfied with the results. so far, even though we're still waiting for those races that are too close to call, to be resolved in the hours days, possibly weeks ahead. yeah, joe biden may be cheerful now, but he's got a tough couple of years ahead because despite what he might think it's not going to be an easy ride for democrats to get any legislation through what put it this
11:11 am
way he is had control of the house and the senate for the 1st 2 years of his administration, he had struggled at times to put through his legislative attent agenda, or without control of the house. he is going to struggle even more every bit of legislative change that he wants to introduce is going to be fought tooth and nail by the republicans. and to that, if by some chance the republicans gained control of the senate, then you're looking at what is virtually a lame duck presidency for the next 2 years. but having said that, one must put all of this into a const xt both bill clinton in 1994 barack obama and 2010 suffered massive losses in these mid term elections. i of bar mar by more than 60 ross, more than 60 house seats and little lost role than 50 house seats. now it doesn't appear that biden's going to suffer these kind of losses, which would give him some hope despite the problems that he's gonna face in the next 2 years. remembering that both clinton and obama having suffered such losses
11:12 am
and mid terms progress turn to win reelection. mike for now thank you very much. indeed mike hannah at the white house or republicans have dominated in florida. rhonda santos has been re elected as governor fueling speculation that he had run for the presidency in 2024 while marco rubio. i secured another time in the senate . the people in this country are going to vote for the people to fight for people like them. they're going to vote for people that are going to fight for people that care about being safe. they don't want drugs coming across our border that don't want illegal immigration running rampant into our country that don't want to have to pay $4.00 for gasoline that don't want to have to pay 22 per cent more than they used to for their groceries. so when you see the results across this country tonight, that's what it's all about. the people who make this country great have been forgotten and have been left behind. and what i'm most proud of is that this community, miami date and the state florida. a diverse state, you find people in the state from everywhere. you find people say from every
11:13 am
background. and they enjoy this incredible new movement that isn't just going to change the country. it's going to change the republican party after tonight the republican party will never be the same. and that's a great thing for america. great, think russ feingold to political risk analyst on former asia chair, republicans abroad, explains what these results could mean for donald trump. and the republican party, we know that the former president, trump is enormously popular with what people like to call the base. and the fact is there were trumping doors, candidates who were elected. so trump is probably going to be the one who takes the blame for republican disappoint and today. and if anything, he'll say that i help put some people across the line. and we know that president trump is very good at messaging. so assuming the republicans do have the majority in the house, there could be
11:14 am
a challenger and the challenges would have very good reasons to challenge mccarthy in say, we didn't have the resoundingly victory. we didn't pick up the several dozen or 3040 seats or some of the more optimistic talk that occurred in recent months. and they might have a basis to challenge him. or he might withdraw very unlikely that he would. first he's got to get elected speaker and then correct, he's gonna have to manage the expectations of a very conservative caucus of republican house members. and there are different priorities but, but ultimately, if the democrats keep control the senate and they control the white house, there's not gonna be a lot of legislating going on. so the way mccarthy plays, that is probably to agree to all sorts of investigations and oversight of the bided inventory ration. and that's something that the republicans do have a consensus about doing. they said they're going to do that. they have a majority and they're going to proceed with doing that and try and do better in 2024 based on that kind of political battling with the,
11:15 am
with the body and ministration. of course, all eyes are still on the races that have yet to be decided. let me show you georgia, georgia senate race is too close to cold is been described as a must win, raced by republicans if they want to gain control. but it now looks like it might be heading for a run off vote, considering the razor thin margin that you can see here. rafael. one of is the incumbent me, he's a pasto. he's got 49.3 percent, but that's with 98 percent of the votes of reported hassle. walker is trumped back . he's also an anti abortion a that's his particular stance against a abortion. and they're having some control, his, his, in his personal life about her with accusations that he paid for a go friends of course are his, on 48.6. interestingly, in the last few hours before the polls close hassles. m. organizers were saying that sad they were telling people to go home because they weren't expecting any result immediately from that. they say that is how tight that is going to be. i
11:16 am
want to show you our zona as well, because our zona does seem to be good news and fall of the democrats. mark kelley is a democrat there, he's got at while let the 53 percent of the votes reported that he's got 56.06 percent there. he's a lot against blake masters and set up 41.68 per cent. this is an interesting one because it's a border state, and the 8 was republican john mccain's state. now he was often a very against a dia, donald trump, when he was president, but also the key and key elements for this are inflation, economy, immigration. but all key issues here, because this is a board of state and latino voters could play a decisive role here. we're going to speak to she hubbard tansy at our capitol hill . she hub. let's start with georgia. what have we been seeing through there? i think when we're trying to understand what have come out of the democrats of
11:17 am
manage this, they have no business and having done so well, even though the republicans are likely to take their houses. this is still perhaps being felt of a sort of loss because in mid term elections the, the, the, the party who doesn't control the white house, should be able to give a good hiding to, to, to the party in power. and we have inflation at a 40. yeah. hi. we have jo bivens, popularity favorability ratings and disaster shape. this should have been a complete disaster, complete, sure, lacking as president obama said after his mid term, 1st mid term elections. i knew it was, and so we're trying to figure out what's been driving that and whether that will be relevant now to, to georgia, for example. and what's becoming increasing from exit polls. and perhaps from the polls that we've had a long was in the end, mid term elections are about driving your base to the polls. even if the,
11:18 am
as the ruling party, you know the base might be rather discontented with you. and that's what the polls show for young people, for example, a key part of the base. and what the democrats relying upon was that supreme court ruling in the summer time, which ended a, the constitutional right to an abortion. and that republican overreach on legislative against abortion. and in some ways, actually, in recent weeks, the democrats were being criticized for talking in the main about abortion, ignoring the economy. but it seems to have done the trick, particularly with that useful base, you know, who were fired up, who was so angry at the possibility of republican overreach on abortion, about ending a woman's right to choose a they did go to the pose. and as you said, abortion is, has become a major issue in that race in georgia because social walker himself, if someone who says he's firmly against abortion, i think it almost without exception. in fact, he has
11:19 am
a really hard line on abortion. and yet several women came out of his pass. why all the 2nd they alleged he paid for it for their abortions. so that, that might be again, i think what the democrats would be hoping for moving forward that again, that, that issue of abortion will be a major issue about moving forward now and pushed literally over the over the edge she ever were talking about arizona before and it's interesting, isn't it? it seems to be a wider range of issues, particularly that was it when i was on it because as we were talking about it's a, it's a border time. so therefore inflation and economy. yes, of course. but immigration, a key one as well. and a, but really interesting chance to see the role that latino voters are going to play in all of this and for a long time there, there's been a real huge amount of criticism about the lack of outreach from the democratic body to the hispanic voters. and latino voters who are becoming much more important block but whose votes can't necessarily be relied upon. they don't vote in a homogenous and homogenous fashion. so yes, that will be key. but interestingly,
11:20 am
abortion is on the ballard iris as well. and it's just nice that the, the base of young people in the democratic party that, that's the democrats are relying upon. but it's suburban, white women who may be swing by suburban and women with a college degree was shocked by abortion reeling. and abortion is very much about once again in arizona because the republican candidate that has a very hard line on abortion, such a hard line on abortion. in fact that he attempted to scrub out any information about his is his hard line and sort of walk, walk in position back. so yes, you're right there. all these issues about immigration and the latino vote. but once again, and i think this is, this has been a winning strategy for, for the democrats. so abortion is once again on the, on the ballot. and we'll see by the way, i should. i also mentioned nevada is the other key state which was still waiting for and they're all sorts of interesting issues there about the economy and about
11:21 am
the locked down on uncovered and all these other issues which are so that's, that's we will get another interesting interesting election that still has yet to be decided upon the which might, which might decide the sentence she had. thank you very much indeed. checkups time . see bring us up to date from capitol hill. ok. we've just been speaking about iris. no one county there. medical has been trending online during the vote. the hardy has more this county is home to nearly 2 3rd of arizona's population. that's more than 4000000 people. it's a battle ground county within a battle ground state and voters there say they've had problems voting due to long lines and machine malfunctions with of course, that on election day that would never happen right now. no, never done. this clip of an election official in maricopa county has been going viral among republican voters, specifically on social media. it's already been viewed more than 4000000 times. the
11:22 am
long lines have only fueled conspiracy theories that the machine issues are an attempt to suppress the republican vote. i just came out of voting in maricopa county, which is my county, and it was an absolute nightmare. they were having the same problem and printing out to ballots for people because of these white speck marks, apparently. and it wasn't reading it and it refused to take my ballot. someone somewhere needs to stand up and fight for people like me and all the other people to i was even in line with their concern and worried about this horrific process that we just went through. while election deniers are calling this voter suppression, the head of elections for maricopa county says it all just came down to a faulty printer. he says, all votes will be counted and the line wait times were exaggerated. but the conversation has grown so much so that even former president, donald trump wade n,

don't leave your line, stay where you are. they say that the machines are working and they say that they're running out of paper in different locations throughout different states. there's a lot of bad things going on, stay online, do not believe. i know you don't want to be there as long as they're going to try and enforce you. they want to delay you out of voting. there was an emergency motion to extend pull hours in the county, but a judge denied that motion. but those line who were in line were still able to vote . now, if you are in the states and had trouble voting, we want to hear from you, you can let us know the hash tag a mid terms ah, in democratic republic of congo at these 9 people have been killed in an attack on the northeast and city of benny a rabbit group called the allied democratic forces is being blamed for the violence
