we started barley, we are a highly anticipate it had meeting between the ladies of the us and china. this taken place, she, she's paying and joe biden made a hit of this year's g 20 summers. while the white house is the conversation, was candid. biden objected to what he called china's aggressive actions towards taiwan. but the 2 sides also agreed to cooperate challenges like climate change and global food security. here's what she and biden had to say. as the leaders over our 2 nations, we share responsibility my view to show the china and the united states can manage our differences. prevent competition from becoming anything, every mere conflict and to find ways to work together on urgent global issues. a require our mutual cooperation and i believe are, this is critical for the sake of our 2 countries, an international community. ah,
5:03 pm
currently the china u. s. relationship is in such a situation that we all care a lot about it, because this is not the fundamental interests about 2 countries in peoples. and it is not what the international community expects of us. as leaders of the 2 major countries, we need to chat the right course for the china u. s. relationship. we need to find the right direction for the bilateral relationship going forward and elevates the relationship. and after years of strained ties, australia's prime minister antony albanese, says he'll also admit she on tuesday is the 1st such meeting in the years. with a g 20 meeting aims to address some of the biggest challenges of our times. but russia's war in ukraine, the resulting global economic full out into regional tensions by make it hard to reach consensus. well, our diplomatic it is a james spies is in bali and already we have some idea of what president she and
5:04 pm
biden spoke about. and it looks like this already of rid line been drawn over taiwan, which was to be expected. yes, absolutely. the comments you heard a few moments ago, what they both said at the start of the meeting, what was achieved during 3 hours of the meeting? well, we're getting not a joint statement as you sometimes would get after meeting like this, but separate statements from the 2 sides. we're going to have president biden who's going to be speaking to reporters in the next few minutes. we think. but already the white house has put out a statement and separately president, she, some of his comments are being put out by chinese state media. the white house statement makes lots of points of things that were discussed, but most of those points they say president biden said this about taiwan. president biden put pressure on china. do more with regard to north korea. there are many points in that whitehouse statement. we say they actually agreed on a thing. the one thing i do agree to interrupt you the find the media. now,

let's tune into prison and joe biden. the recent elections held in the united states. what we saw was the strength of resilience as american democracy. we saw an action in american people prove once again the democracy is who we are. there is a strong rejection of election deniers at every level from those seeking the lead our states and those seeking to serve in congress and also those seeking to oversee the elections. and there is a strong rejection of political violence, been voter intimidation. there was in fabric statement that in america the world, the people prevails. i have, i've traveled this week, has been clear just how close to the world and our allies, and our competitors as well. have been following our lectures at home, excuse me, a little cold. and what these election showed is that there's a deeper waiver and commitment americans preserving and protecting defending
5:06 pm
democracy. now let me speak briefly about our agenda over the past few days in egypt and in cambodia. and here in indonesia. and this moment of great global challenges from global inflation to climate crisis, to russia's brutal war against ukraine. we're bringing together the broad as possible coalition and partners to deliver results. comp 27 in egypt. i made it clear thanks to the ball agenda ard ministration. we pursue from day one to tackle the climate crisis in advance energy security at home and around the world. the united states will be united states will meet our mission is target under the targets under the pass agreement. and we're going to keep working with our partners to support the most vulnerable countries and building resilience to climate that impacts and to align global ambition with the 1.5 degrees celsius goal. while super charge in our clean energy transition at the u. s. l. c. on summit in the stages
5:07 pm
summit, i laid out a commitment forward to working with our partners in in the pacific to ensure future that is vital in this region. that's free and open and prosperous as well as secure. and i met with our allies from australia, japan and the republic of korea, underscore and our commitment and deep engagement with our closest partners and strategy cooperation. i'm our allies to meet shared threats, to our own security, and to this their security, including the dpr k. and let me, i just met in person where she's paying of the people's republic of china. we had actually, and we had an open, candid conversation about our intentions and our priorities. it was clear, he was clear and i was clear, there will defend american interest in values promot, university human rights, and stand up for the international order and work in lockstep with our allies and
5:08 pm
partners. we're going to compete vigorously, but i'm not looking for conflict. i'm looking to manager competition responsibly and i want to make sure, make sure that every country abide by the international rules of the road. we discussed that one china policy or one china policy has not changed, has not changed. we oppose unilateral change the status quo by either side, and we're committed to maintaining the pieces to taiwan trades was also go to china . united states should be able to work together where we can solve global challenges require every nation to do as part we discuss russia, aggression against ukraine, reaffirmed our shared belief. and the threat or the use of nuclear weapons is totally unacceptable. and i asked that secretary blank and travel to china to follow up on our discussions and continue keeping the lines of communication open between our 2 countries. looking ahead at the g 20 meeting tomorrow,
5:09 pm
we're going to be talking to taking on the very issues a matter of people's lives out only here, but also also our allies in our partners. that means tackling the suffering that russia aggression has unleashed, not just in the ukraine, people, but the people around the world, particularly food insecurity and strengthening the fundamentals of our global economy for everyone. support for debt relief reforms for molly lateral development banks investments to bolster global health security. and to make sure the world is better prepared for the next pandemic. the g 20 has been an important forum for the world's largest economies to work together for the good of people everywhere. and i'm looking forward to our meeting tomorrow. and let me close this. my 1st trip overseas. last year, i said that america was back back at home, back at the table and back to leaving the world in the year and a half. that's follow. we've shown exactly what that means. america is keeping us
5:10 pm
commitments. american invest in our strength at home. americans working alongside our allies and partners, deliver real meaningful progress around the world. it is critical moment. no nation is better position, help build the future we want. then the united states of america. i'm happy to take questions that i'm told are going to be for questioners, but i'm not going to do 10 questions from each question. all right, make that clear out here. and so can thomas wall street journal did not want the that was competition. conflict on the seller is do you believe a whole shot? insisted on issue. i spoke about changing people lead,
5:11 pm
showing it harry pending to the time i was on what warnings she did such as your 1st part of the question. i'm absolutely believers need not be a new cold war we. i've met many times was she's in pain, and we were candid and clear with one another across the board. and i do not think there's any imminent attempt on the part of china to invade taiwan. and i made it clear that our policy in taiwan has not changed at all. it's the same exact position we've had. i made it clear that we want to see cross street issues, preschool resolve and. and so it never has to come to that. and i'm convinced that that he understood exactly what i was saying. i understood he was saying, and look, i think the united states is better prepared than any country in the world,
5:12 pm
economically and politically, to deal with changing circumstances around the world. and i think that i think she didn't think we agreed that we would set up a search set of circumstances were on issues that were, that we had them for, for the resolve details. we agreed that we have our chief of staff, are the appropriate cabinet members and others sit and meet with one another to discuss the details. and every issue that we that was raised and we raised a lot of issues on whose son kim, associated press. mother, i think she met with quality power at that now that you've met with, i mean it's sort of last year for the united. wow. and finally personally,
5:13 pm
to be more compensation or more or even going to compromise new years. i'm sorry. i didn't find a more confrontational and more conciliatory found in the way he's always been director, straightforward, and do i think he's willing to compromise on various issues? yes. i think he understands that. who a guy i think how can i say this tax on? i think the i think the election held in 9 states was still leaves a little bit uncertain, has sent a very strong message around the world that the united states is ready to play. 9 states is republicans who survive the one where the democrats are of the view that we're going to stay fully engaged in the world and that we in fact know we're
5:14 pm
about. so i don't get any sense that there's more or less confrontation. we were very born with one another about places where we disagreed or where we were uncertain of each other's position and we agreed we set up and we did mechanisms whereby we would meet in detail with our key people in each of our administrations to discuss how we could resolve or how if they weren't resolved on what basis, we're not on sebastian smith the so the 3 thank you very much. responses a lead. so you have all your signal at some point on you can use, well you can't really pursue their ultimate goal all losses with
5:15 pm
it. so the u. s. and support a whole lot of it all, all you have a different kind of like some point. it goes shading model. hm. all right. first of all the significant, significant, significant. and i can do nothing but applaud curry termination capacity of the credit people. you know what i mean, they're really amazing. and i think it's hard to tell at this point exactly what it means in terms of what i've been very clear that we're going to continue to provide the capability for the credit people to defend themselves. and we are not going to engage in any negotiation. there's no,
5:16 pm
nothing about your credit without your credit has to make, i think you're going to see things slow down a bit because of the winter months. and you know, the ability to move was as easily around the country, but i think they're amazing me see exactly what the company except that i'm competing. russia will not hire, defend you. credit is the intended oh you know, hard to read this warriors and turned in both both then question on north korea, which appears that point to conduct in new york. i'm wondering if you can talk about your discussion with president she on that to what extent you think china has the ability to talk to things such and what are the questions for us chinese,
5:17 pm
you mentioned that the textbook for 1st of all it's difficult to say that i am certain that china can control north korea. number one, number 2, i've made it clear to present and she's you paying that? i thought they had an obligation to attempt to make it clear to north korea that they should not engage in long range nuclear test. and i made it clear as well that if they did, they mean north korea that we would have to take certain actions that would be more defensive on our behalf. and it would not be directed to us, north korea. i mean, shoot, we would not be directed against china, but it would be to send them a clear message to north korea. we're going to a friend, our allies, as well as american soil is american capacity. and so, but i do not think that is difficult to determine whether or not
5:18 pm
china has the capacity. i'm confident china is not looking for north korea to engage in further escrow. tory means because i made it clear, and i made clear from the very beginning and last year as well that we will do it the to defend our capacity to defend ourselves and our allies, south korea as well as japan. and that it would be, we'd be more up in the face of, of, of china. but it wouldn't be because of china because of what was going on in north korea. so and again on a number of these issues, we have put together teams where our national security, advisor, sector, defense and others are going to be engaging with their counterparts in china. to see we're not gonna be able to work everything out. and i, my suggestion is going to, this is come by, i, you know,
5:19 pm
everybody's going to go away with everything in agreement. but i do not believe there's a need for concern of a, as one of you raise the legitimate question, the new cold war. and i think that i conclude by saying this way, i want to be clear and be clear with all leaders, but particularly when she's in pain that i mean when i say, and i say what i mean. so there's no misunderstanding. that's the biggest concern is i have is a misunderstanding about intentions or actions on each of our parts. so we want to look at my team, how long that me last 3 and a half hours. so we covered an awful lot of territory and, and i must say that he was a straightforward as he has been with me in the past. and i, i think that we understand one,
5:20 pm
which is the most important thing that can be done. i guess all are going swimming from here. it's not far from that, but i don't think i can expect much of anything other than we're going to maintain our positions. i'm not going to get any more questions. i shouldn't even there that your question? no, no, i don't think i, i don't think there's enough boats to kind of fire unless something happens. okay, that was us president joe biden speaking in barley, a hit of the g 20 summit. and after his meeting with his chinese counterpart president, she's paying, we're going to bring it out to medic, editor james buys, who is in bali and jumps. you've been listening into prism bought. and what did you make of his comments? particularly when it came to prison she while they went into this meeting, i think the u. s. side with pretty low expectations. what could be achieved?
5:21 pm
what they did want to make clear is the president by wanted to make clear the u. s . his positions, he wanted to make sure they knew their red lines, and us wanted to hear the red lines from china. he said they had an open them can this, the scott discussion that they would have vigorous comp, a competition as countries, but they would not get into any sort of confrontation. i think there was some interesting comments just there with regard to him. so he believes that a new cold war can be averted. he believes a chinese invasion of taiwan can be deterred. he believes that he's made it clear to the, to, to, to the chinese that the u. s. policy with regard to taiwan has not changed. interesting on north korea that he said he believes that he'll entirely sure whether china has the ability to control north korea is a behavior. but he said that he made it clear to present she showing that had an
5:22 pm
obligation to try and control north korea's behavior. the president, seeing being somewhat positive, i would say in tone at least of what was achieved by that meeting and saying that we follow up with press, with sex, just a blinking making his way to beijing for talks. interestingly, at the same time, we've had comments coming from the chinese side from chinese state media. who being quoting president, she, he seems a little tougher. on the taiwan situation. he says the taiwan question, is it a very core of china's core interests? the taiwan question is the 1st red line that must not be crossed in china. us relations, resolving the taiwan question as a matter for the chinese and the chinese internal affair. so quite hard line response from the chinese side. but i don't think the us were expecting anything other than that, they wanted both sides to be very honest to share their positions and keep
5:23 pm
a conversation going, but can stop what is already a shake, the relationship deteriorating further. it, like you mentioned. obviously, taiwan being a sticking point in the relationship with chinese media also come out and see the success of china and the us, the opportunities not challenges for each other. is that more positive than you had anticipated and a good sign for the future of relations. certainly that's the sort of language that the u. s. administration and president biden, and those around him want to hear they know that these 2 countries are going to compete. they all the biggest economic powers on they have very different world views, but they do not want that competition to become conflict. and you just have to think what conflict between the u. s. and china to nuclear power would, would mean already we've got almost
5:24 pm
a direct conflict between the us and russia with the us very strongly supporting ukraine in ukraine's warf with russia after russia's invasion. but of course, china is so different from russia. russia is economically a relatively minor power, the u. s. and china or the powers that make the economic system around the world work if that was to be sanctions, boycotts and things like that. in a conflict between the u. s. and china, it almost certainly would collapse the whole global economy. okay, thank you so much jamie space for your analysis. jim space out. diplomatic is bally landing mark is a senior research fellow with the center for china and globalization. he joins us by scott from beijing. thank you very much for being on al jazeera. you've been listening into the tool of that. what. what did you make of biden's comments? what are the main takeaway for you? do you think?
5:25 pm
well, i thought his comments were very moderate in tone and conciliatory. my concern though is that while he was saying the right things, and i think maybe there is a little bit of an artful misdirection here as well in that he repeatedly emphasized that both sides very candid and direct with each other. ah, you are as if that were some a major achievement um, but nevertheless, i think what is concerning is that while what was said was reassuring, it does not match the behavior. and the other part of this that is concerning is the question of just how much credibility does president biden have in pro, preventing the china u. s. relationship from descending into conflict. we know that president c was adamant about taiwan and reminding president biden again,
5:26 pm
that the us should not test china's resolve on this question. um, but we saw with the policy visit that. so despite these very clear, ah, warnings from china, ah, president biden appeared powerless to keep a house speaker policy from going. and this then ratcheted up the attentions in taiwan. and i think put it more likely on a course the conflict. so i think the upcoming question mark is the taiwan policy act. now, if that does go to biden's desk, can he veto it? ah, you know, it's not implausible to see a similar political dynamic playing out. and i think this is one of the big question marks, but certainly ah, it's great that both sides are talking. are there is going to be more follow up as we heard with the secretary of state. oh,
5:27 pm
it looks like we have just lost to andy mark who was a senior research fellow at the center of china in globalization. we are going to move on to other news now. well, a 46 people have been detained after sundays blasts and took his biggest city. the explosion killed 6 people and injured more than 80. it happened on a stick last street, a bustling shopping area. and stan bull, which is popular with locals and tourists. police say the woman who planted the bomb is syrian, the band, p k. k group has denied allegations it was behind the attack, sent him cuz he only has more from a sample. we heard from the turkish authorities that at 4 to 6 suspects have been detained after the attack, and the main suspect, the perpetrator, a female, has been also arrested by the turkish police around 2 50 am. nearly 3 am early this
