and the hall, se experts and matter now says thomas videos, info and excitement from around the city and across the globe join us the cast us 2022 on out to 0. what happens when the news media failed to do that joke? it's one of the biggest reasons why iraq is not yet a democracy. there's no accountability. the listening post exposes the power is controlling the narrative. russian media does the lot of favorably. his message has to be back by the whole propaganda for apple and the tools they used to do it. how do you read through all of them information? how do you determine what is this and promotion you with the listening post your guide to the media on al jazeera? ah, poland has held an emergency meeting and stepped up its military readiness after 2

missiles land and its territory, killing 2 people. nato ambassadors will hold an emergency meeting on wednesday to discuss the attack. ah, i'm how much of room this is alger alive from door. how also coming up earlier russia launched missile attacks on several ukrainian cities, including the capital keith, the ukraine conflict is dominating the g. 20 summit in bali where leaders have pressed on moscow to in the war. we begin with the development which threatens to spill the ukraine conflict into other parts of europe. a blast has hit eastern poland, which ukraine says was caused by russian missiles. 2 people were killed in the explosion in the village of parish leveled off. it's about 10 kilometers from the
3:02 am
ukrainian border. it coincided with a barrage of russian missiles fired on ukraine on tuesday. moscow denies carrying out any strikes near the ukrainian polish border, but ukraine's president has called it a significant escalation beat there, a gentleman, but that ability, enough hidden messiah will need to territory desertion. massage tech on collective security. it is a very significant escalation. we must act, and i want to say now to all our polish brothers and sisters, the ukraine will always support you. terror let break free people, but in week 2 is possible when there is no fear. hollins government has called an emergency meeting and is raising the readiness of its military unit. it's also considering whether to raise the matter with nato. with detail still and confirmed international reaction has been cautious. many you members have voice alarm and solidarity with poland. the u. s. state department has been guarded about the developments out of poland, but says the reports are incredibly concerning in the united states. is it
3:03 am
certainly not trying to escalate or insight that situation at all? and like i said, we have seen the same reports that you all have, and we are working with the polish government to gather more information. and we're not at a point where we can confirm some of these reports that we're seeing. and that's why i'm telling you that we will come in when exactly is transpired and we want are inappropriate next steps as well. and response rushes, defense ministry is reported to have said statements by polish media and officials about the russian missiles hitting polish territory. are a deliberate provocation. with the aim of escalating the situation. it went on to say no strikes against targets near the ukrainian polish border. had been carried out by russian weapons. our correspondence are monitoring this fast moving story. our diplomatic editor james bays is at the g. 20 liter summit in bali. the 1st let's go to my canada and washington with the latest reaction out of the united

states. mike, do we know any more about the content of the call between president biden and polish president duda? no, it was a limited release in terms of the coal, but what was made clear was that president biden has expressed his full support for the polish leader. and as a fellow men about monet, tone making very clear that the u. s. would stick to the dictates of nato in terms of backing any one of the 30 partners who comes under attack. so president biden, who is sat present in bali, offering their, his support to the polish prime minister. he's also spoken to the secretary general of nato, and here within the united states has been a lot of activity in government corridors as well. we've heard statements from the pentagon, from the state department, and from the national security council and all are sitting from the same tune. they are making very clear that they are not fully aware of all the details of what has
3:05 am
happened. they are further investigating. they are speaking to then polish counterparts in terms of finding out exactly what happened. but the u. s. position appears to be clear at this point to remain calm, to remain cautious not to get ahead of themselves. the common message from all departments has been let us wait and see exactly what happened and then we can start discussing what to do next. all right, that's al jazeera mike hannah joining us live out of washington, d. c. thanks so much, mike. at the g 20 liter summit in bali, european council president charles michelle said he will propose a meeting with you leaders to discuss the missiles strike our diplomatic editor james base joins us now from the summit in bali. james, a what's likely to happen in the coming hours? well, i think you're going to get lots more discussions going on because all of the key
3:06 am
players, not all of them, but many, many of the key players all happened to be in the same place at the same time. obviously, president biden has already made those calls to his polish counterpart president due to today to say general installs and book. but also in the us delegation that you have jake sullivan, the national security advisor, and the u. s. secretary of state anthony blanket davis. both spoken to the counterparts as well. and i'm told immediately after the phone call between the secretary of state blinking and his counterpart sydney ral the foreign minister out of poland, summoned in the russian ambassador to poland and asked an explanation for what has happened. and i suspect that's the sort of thing you might see in some other nato and the capitals in the coming hours. the g 20 summit continues as normal and president biden and the others will be attending it as normal. but i think on the sidelines of the g 20 summit in the margins of the meeting, all of the discussions are going to be about what happened in poland. it's worth
3:07 am
noting who we have here in body at the moment. out of the 30 nato countries, 9 of the nato leaders happened to be here as part of either the g 20 or the countries that have additionally been invited to the g. 20. we have still the president of china, the prime minister of india, and the nato set country general. so expect a lot of discussions between all of these people about what's going to go on. i would expect president biden will also be making more secure phone calls with that meeting of the nato ambassadors north atlantic council, which will be coming up in a few hours time. probably place a call. i would think to his ambassador julian smith about what nato is going to do, that important meeting that will be happening in brussels in the coming hours. and james, clearly concern is growing among all the leaders that you mentioned. can you give us a sense of the gravity of this situation?
3:08 am
well, it's obviously very serious. the people have died in the nato country bordering ukraine for the 1st time because of what appears to be a russian attack. and technically, if you look at the nato's treaty, the north atlantic treaty, there is article 5, which is the one for all article it's known as, which is an attack on any ne to member can be considers in the tank on all the nato members. but i would urge a bit of caution that is only in history, been invoked once, and that was after $911.00. in fact, even though that was pretty clear cut, it took a month for them to to trigger article 5. this is not so clear. cut the meeting that's being called in brussels today of the north atlantic council of the ambassadors is on the or article for which is consultations. if one member focused on state feels that its security has been threatened. and i think it's more likely
3:09 am
that the, the current badges after they've, they've, they've got more information about what's going on at the scene and the polish now saying they're inviting other members of the international community, particularly the nato members to go and have a look at what happened at the scene, i think slightly that that will be some sort of action, but i suspect it's going to be more calling of russian ambassadors. in ne, tony, you countries and possibly strengthening the number of troops and the missile defenses in the nato countries that surround russia, we've seen, over the last year since the invasion of ukraine. many, many forces moved into those countries in poland itself. the main nato ally, that's got additional troops there in poland is, is actually the us and the lead nation there. 122000 a polish troops. but in addition to that, there are $11600.00 the latest figure. i've seen nato troops and the majority of those all us troops. one final thing to say,
3:10 am
you mohammed is about the russians. you may be asking, where are the russians because they're a member of the g 20. well, the russian foreign minister. so gay love ralph was here, but he gave a news conference late last night body time, and some hours ago he flew back on his way back to moscow. russia for now representing the g 20 bytes finance minister. now challenges here is diplomatic editor james bays live for us from the g. 20 liter summit in bali. james, thank you so much for breaking it all down for us. john hall isn't keith with more? it really is down to poland at this point to decide what sort of action it may wish to initiate. they've been engaged the government in an emergency security council meeting for a couple of hours now. the president has spoken to president biden consulted also with other nato allies, and perhaps a clue of what is to come comes via the reuters news agency. quoting to european ambassadors unnamed saying that nato ambassadors are due to meet on wednesday at
3:11 am
the request of poland on the basis of nato's article. for there had been talk that the government was considering triggering article for it appears that may have happened and we may be about to hear that. now, what is article for? well, it is a provision whereby any member of the 30 member lives can, if they feel that their security, territorial integrity or independence is threatened. cole, for a formal meeting of all the nato allies to sit down together and work out a common response. it calls for formal consultations, there is no obligation to act, they would look at whether that threat exists and how potentially to counter it and they would reach a unanimous conclusion on that basis. and one of those diplomats is quoted to saying the alliance would act with caution. and it needed time to verify exactly
3:12 am
what has occurred in this incident. and of course, that is crucial. the key questions at the, at this point, will be who fi these missiles was a, in fact fired by russia, and were they in fun, a fight with intent intent a little in other words, to attack nato territory. those at this point remain open questions and bastards. of nato member countries will meet on wednesday following poland request. the defense alliance of chief insult and burg said in a tweet, i spoke with president duda about the explosion and poland. i offered my condolences for the loss of life. nato was monitoring the situation and allies are closely consulting important that all facts are established. natasha butler is in paris with more on nato's announcement. this emergency meeting that has been called in response to those events in poland at the request of poland. now what we know is that in stoughton berg,
3:13 am
the head of nato is apparently chairing that meeting and we will be briefed afterwards after the meeting by install to bugs will find out more about exactly what was discussed in that meeting. i mean, there is no doubt that what has happened this evening in european time is certainly not what nato wanted to see. a possible missile landing in nato territory in poland. this is something that has been talked about over again as a possible risk that this could happen as part of russia's war in ukraine. and now we see that it could possibly have happened. we don't know what the provenance of these missiles are, in fact some european leaders we have heard haven't even called them. they saw they are talking about explosions, taking, being very cautious the, to their approach in how they couches, how they frame this in their messaging. and that's a very similar tact that's being taken by nato. nato members really urging caution
3:14 am
at this stage, saying they're in consultations. they will be this meeting of ambassadors, moore, of course, many of the european leaders, nato leaders, i should say, are actually in bali pretty much from up to 5 to the world for the g. 20 former us ambassador to nato, kurt volker, joined me now from washington. d. c. thanks so much for joining us now. 0. my pleasure. thanks for having a bathroom walker. there's still a lot to be unearthed here when it comes to what happened in poland. so is it all clear to you what the timeline might be going forward for any kind of response from nato? well, yes, i think that the initial response is already what your correspondents are speaking, bel, which is to convene an emergency meeting of the north atlantic council for consultations under article for the native treaty because of this threat that is a beard. poland. there needs to be a lot more information gathering. we need to know where the missiles came from,
3:15 am
the how they were fired, what the targeting that was intended to actually was, was it, poland was something else. does russia acknowledge this? because russia emitted, it was a mistake and promised not to do it again. another needs to be some kind of warning to russia that even an accidental struggle, native territory is something that nato will respond to in the future. so there's a lot of steps already in motion, and i think we're beginning to see that i'm better volker. there's been a lot of discussion the past years about whether article 4 might be triggered whether article 5 might be invoked at some point. how much is all this, have the potential to escalate things? well, he does have a potential to escalate. if russia deliberately attacked nato territory, that demands an immediate response. if russia did it by accident, but refuses to acknowledge that or refuses to take any measures to prevent that in future, that also demands some kind of response from nato. so natal doesn't want to escalate,
3:16 am
no one to nato wants to be in a conflict with russia. likewise, i think we all believe that russia does not want to draw nato into the conflict, and that would be devastating for russia. so i think we have an opportunity to avoid escalation, but it's important that there be some very steady messaging and steady decisions and a clear response from russia about what happened. so in better volker, if nato does not want to escalate, does not want to get involved or drawn into the conflict in ukraine. i must also ask you though, is this going to be something that strengthens nato's support of ukraine? well, i think there maybe isn't. no mitigating measures that nato will look at. the 1st thing that natives go look at, is nato's own security. it's commitment to collective self defense is that rock solid? does anything need to be strengthened? if there is a risk that russian missiles fired at ukraine had pole and may do so,
3:17 am
again, that may demand nato to protect itself. to do more, to assist you, craig, with its own air defense, maybe even a no fly zone or secure areas. ukrainian airspace in order to ensure that nothing is going to affect native territory. that's something that people should be thinking about. if in fact, this looks as though it could continue. all right, former us ambassador to nato kurt boker, thanks so much for joining us. great to get your perspective. thank you very much. still had on al jazeera former us president donald trump is expected to announce is 2024 bit for the white house. were live outside his home in florida. and thousands lea violence in the democratic republic of congo as in $23.00 fighters, advanced and the countries north keeping products ah, anticipation is rising. and so is the abs

ah, you're watching al jazeera, a reminder of our top stories this our nato says is looking at to an explosion in eastern poland, which ukraine is blaming on russian missiles. 2 people were killed in the blasts in a village near the ukrainian puerto moscow denies carrying out shrikes on the area . international reaction has been cautious. many you members have voiced alarm and solidarity with poland. lithuania and a stony osis and the stony are saying, every inch of nato territory must be defended. it came on the same day. russia launched one of its biggest bombardments of ukraine since its invasion in february . missiles had targets across the country, killing at least one person, and causing widespread blackouts. alex baird has more scenes that
3:21 am
have become all too common in ukraine and now in neighboring poland. to massage, i believe, to have had farm land around 10 kilometers from the ukrainian border to famines were killed. poland government has been holding an emergency meeting, but across the border and ukraine, president for me as a lift gate was quick to blame the kremlin beat that i kept them at the firing missiles at night. her territory is a rushing attack on the collective security. this is a very significant escalation act. i want to say now to all the polish brothers and sisters, ukraine will always support you. free people will not be broken by tara. russia has denied it, was involved in a statement. it's defense ministry said that statements by polish media and officials about russian massage fitting polish territory are a deliberate provocation with the aim of escalating the situation. the us state department has been careful not to jump to conclusions. we have seen reports out of
3:22 am
lend. they of course, are incredibly concerning, and we're working with our partners and the polish government and our nato partners to get more information into assess what happened. nicer allies have been quick to rally behind warsaw as the alliance works to establish what actually happens. a number of neighboring countries held emergency security meetings. others renewed, the pledges to defend every inch of nitro territory. poland has not used and how it will react, but it's not taking any chances. john, point for them all by just because i sounds when you cited a moment ago to increase the readiness of some military units in poland and increase the readiness of other uniform services in our country. all eyes and now on nato. as it grapples with house respond, and house will void a dangerous escalation to the war in ukraine. alex beard al jazeera, in a few hours, former us president donald trump will make what he's called
3:23 am
a very big announcement. he's made no secret of his wish to launch a 3rd run for the white house. he was on the campaign trail during the mid term elections rallying for hard, right, republican candidates. but most of those he backed and key races failed to be elected. renee or de joined us now from outside donald trump's estate in west palm beach, florida. renee, what is expected from this announcement by donald trump? well, what's expected is the unexpected mohammad. we're here, like you said outside of mar, logo, outside of trump's, the states all fingers are pointing to a potential announcement that he will be running for reelection in the 2024 presidential election. and according to his latest post on his own social media platform, truth social, he says hopefully today will turn out to be one of the most important days in the history of our country. so all indications are that he will likely announce that he is running for the presidency in the 2024 election. the announcement that we're
3:24 am
waiting for is expected to happen at o 2 g m t. a lot of his supporters that have i have that stakes out outside a with their t shirts and their banner is waiting for him to to make this announcement. i, a lot of by anti trump rhetoric has been going around as well. we've seen some propeller planes flying banners, a with some anti trump slogans. so i, we're just gonna have to wait and see exactly what, what he announces. because as we know and as history has told us when it comes to donald trump, anything as possible. and renee, as always, there is even more drama now around donald trump. a tell us more about the in fighting in the republican camp after setbacks in the mid terms. yeah, well what the republicans were expecting to be a red wave during the mid term elections. really turned into more of a ripple, a lot of the candidates that were hand selected by donald trump didn't when they actually last in quite
3:25 am
a spectacular fashion. and so the republican party is laming trump for this essentially saying that if had he not pick the candidates, they might have been able to take more seats, they lost the senate, the houses were still waiting to see how that's going to ends up. but there is a lot of dis, unity within the republican party. we're also seeing a lot of very kind of, you know, 1st round kind of not formal opinion polls, but just some, some pulls that have been going around saying that maybe trump isn't the number one candidate for the republican nomination for the white house runs a santa who is, who is the governor of florida? he just won reelection by a landslide. here he was once a trump loyalist, and he is now in trump sites. trump is going after him with the name calling like certain certain names, like rhonda sanctimonious, for instance. but the fantasy has just pretty much kept quiet about it. call and get noise. not really engaging with donald trump. some of the pulled we've been reading say that the santas could have an 11 percent advantage over trump. and some
3:26 am
of the key primary states like iowa. so there could be a bit of disunity. it's going to take some time for us to see exactly which way the republican party kind of leaned. but right now it could look like a tight. it could look like a tight race. so we're here, we're waiting, we are going to see exactly what he announces, and if it, as a potential run for, for the 2024 presidency, then it could be a 2 years that could be anybody's guess. really what's going to happen if the republicans will be able to take it if the democrats will come back stronger, will just really have to wait and see. all right, that child here is renee o day live outside mar logo will be checking back with you soon. thanks so much. rene. thousands of people in democratic republic of congo or on the move scrambling for safety. the conflict between the military and the m. 23 fighters is moving closer to the regional capital of north keybo province, goma men, women, and children had been carrying whatever they can and walking along the main highway
