the capital me with 2 more protests is killed in peru, supporters of the ousted form of president demand his immediate release from custody. ah, i haven't seek this. is it a life from the house that coming up? iran publicly hangs a man linked to anti government protest. it's the 2nd execution in less than a week than i. jerry and ami is accused of carrying out massacres, targeting children during its war against om groups in the northeast. half ganesh found struggle to sell the world's most expensive spice
2:01 am
ah at least 4 people have now been killed during protests in peru. demonstrations began last week when former president pedro castillo was impeached and arrested. his successor dina watson says she will ask congress to call early elections, but many protest this one, the former lead it to be released immediately. in the 2nd largest city attic keeper . they blocked access to the airport and fort with police and in and the who while yes, the grieving family of a 17 year old boy who died during demonstrations on demanding justice. that's a remote rule region, dominated by indigenous people who support was crucial to pedro custio's election when a while in scuffles broken out between protesters and police officers who were trying
2:02 am
to clear blocked roads. marianna sanchez has more now from lima on pedro castillo's response. he wrote a letter, a handwritten letter from prison. i think it was funds that he's feeling that there's a lot of people who are in bro testing and want him freed. this is not what people were protesting in the last few days. most of her movements were asking to close congress or for new general elections. but more and more, we see people who are protesting in thing her a former president guess who wrote this letter and say, saying the left hand with the letter, saying that this was the most difficult time of his life. that day he had been kidnapped that he had been mistreated, that who was income when he had. oh, and there he went after president a lot to build his right hand or person for a 16 month that he was in office and said that she had sold them up

residency. now this happened just after a few hours after congress, i, after congress had a motion to live, the press, former president, immunity, so he can be prosecuted. he is facing charges for playground rebellion with perhaps the most serious charge, maybe for 20 years in prison. how long with more of these ministers, one i heard his former prime minister and 3 other ministers. let's talk more about this now with joe marie, but she is associate professor of political science at latin american studies at george mason university. join just now from washington. thanks for being with us. so let me ask you, 1st of all, just how, how powerful are the protests, how and how well are there?
2:04 am
demands reza, to resonating and peru. well, the protests are very powerful. they're across the country. they're not just in lima, they're, they're especially concentrated along the southern quarter of peru, which is where a former president custio's base is strongest. and they seem to have fairly unified demands. and many of them are calling for the restoration of cost to you as president. they're calling for new elections. they're calling for the closure of congress and for a national assembly that would in theory, write a new constitution. i'm. but i think it's important to also note that in the situation it, there's been, there's been numerous people are injured for people who have been reported dead. the government response has been, you know,
2:05 am
to dismiss the legitimacy of the protesters that the probably, the new prime minister actually said that people were being paid to come protest. so some of the right wing legislators in congress have dismissed the protesters as pro shining pappa, a mouth insurgent group that was prominent in the 1980s in 1990 s which doesn't really exist any more. and so it's just a very volatile situation in the country right now. well, the problem is the government is failing to really listen to what people are saying, but so many of us mr. castillo critics will, will point to the fact that he, he tried to, um, dissolve congress and ruled by decree. and this is profoundly anti democratic, and that's why he was impeached and removed from office. what to his supporters have to say to that. yeah, i mean that's exactly right he, he, on december 7th, he announced that he was shutting down the congress and going to rule by decree and
2:06 am
intervene in the, in the judiciary and so forth. and within a matter of hours, the entire thing collapse. he clearly had not gotten the support you need to carry out a maneuver of that kind and he was almost, you know, within hours arrested. that's a fact. a lot of his supporters in congress and elsewhere are claiming that he was some of the claims he was drugged. some have claimed that he was tracked some he himself, as of that he was kidnapped. and none of which is really true. um, he did try to carry out a coup. it's an illegal act. he was removed because of that, a problem is, is that the congress, which is in the body that you know of voted to remove castillo from office, is a, has the worst, an approval rating of all time. i think in the most reasonable. it was some like 9
2:07 am
percent of peruvians approved of the congress. and you have to keep in mind that the congress is controlled by a series of right wing groups. that from the very beginning deny the legitimacy of castillo government regardless of this december. 7th qu, attempt back last year when he was elected president, legitimately the far right parties tried to claim that there was fraud and tried to or not recognize his government as legitimate. and they still maintain these arguments to the state, despite the fact that there is 0 evidence of any fraud. and they will also, there's also been a bit of racism against custody you who is, you know, a rural, a teacher from provinces. and there's a lot of racism that has been deployed against them that, that some of his supporters fine, really disturbing if i could, if i could just jump id for my move because i kind of guess to might, to my final question, which is the sort of the anger, ah, that this is rooted in,
2:08 am
especially in the remote areas of peru with as heavy concentrations of, of, of indigenous a people what, what, what's that the roots of that angle for many people it well, it's been building. i mean, this problem did not start with castillo. ah, there has been a long simmering resentment over a politic amongst the stem net was imposed in the early 1990 is by the dictatorship of about the food you more who carried out be original. so qu, in peru, in 1092, he impose the current political system, peru lives under the constitution of 93. he installed after carrying out that who so it was a, it was a constitution installed by a dictatorship essentially. um, and he installed an echo, a neo liberal economic model that excludes the vast majority of the population.
2:09 am
certainly there's economic growth for some people. and some people have clearly benefited from this model that the vast majority of peruvians have not. and you could add to that sort of historic demands of inclusion and end to racism and so poor. and this is where peru is that. right? yeah, it's a little bit of a powder. appreciate your perspective. thanks very much for talking to a said jo marie butts in washington dice abuse. thanks for having me. i, ron has executed another prisoner linked to anti government protests that have engulfed the country for months. it is the 2nd execution in less than a week. magid reza at odd was publicly hanged on monday, and iranian cool convicted him of stabbing to security, forced members to death during protests. last month the been widespread demonstrations across iran since 22 year old mass. i mean, he died in police custody in september dosage. a body is in tehran with more on the
