8:06 am
ended up in mass graves scattered across the country. one of the biggest challenges facing this problem of force disappearances is impunity as noted by a report published by human rights watch when families of missing persons report disappearances. the response from authorities is notoriously slow, and a majority of these cases are never even investigated. let's bring in fil robertson . he's deputy asia director. human rights watch. enjoys going out from jakarta, miss roberson. always good to have you on the program or your organization publishes a report like this each year. and each year you say the situation is getting worse . i mean, how bad has the last 12 months been just as a brief overview, please? well, i mean, if we look at what's happening in afghanistan for women in the girls, and we look at what's happened, obviously in ukraine with the russian invasion, the situation across the world. unfortunately, it has gotten worse. but we're also saying is a, it's
8:07 am
a responsibility of many other governments. the not the traditional governments have cared about human rights from the european union north america. but governments from latin america, from africa, from middle east, other places to. busy also step up and do something about human rights to recognize that they have an important role in promoting human rights and protecting human rights and not leave it to others. i mean, you just mentioned you creighton in afghanistan as 2 locations in the world. and others might get overlooked. what areas of the world should not be overlooked and what would you like the global community to focus on as well? well, if we look at the asia region, me m r a is a, an ongoing human rights disaster. you have a country being torn apart and crimes against humanity being committed every day by a military junta, backed by china and russia. ah, you know, there needs to be a much stronger focus because this is something where there is interest in the region to try to resolve it. but the reality is that the international community is just not focused enough on dealing with that issue. certainly north korea, there's
8:08 am
a lot of problems in north korea, but again, you know, it's a major, major rights abusing state that often seems to get away with it because everybody's talking about their nuclear weapons or their missile technology. often when we think of human rights, we tend to perhaps focus in all rone psychology of looking at asia and africa. yet we're looking at my group problem across europe, that's being treated very differently from different eve states and the united kingdom. oh, what's your opinion about what's going on there right now? well, i mean, it, there is quite clearly been pointed out that there is a double standard. that on one hand, refugees from the ukraine have been treated very well worth refugees from syria, afghanistan and iraq who tried to reach europe have received just the opposite kind of treatment. that is a very serious concern. and that is a legitimate criticism of many of the european member states that you know,
8:09 am
they're not necessarily on, you know, playing evenly with everyone. and, you know, we also spend a lot of time focusing on rights abuses in the united states. i mean, human rights watch one of our largest divisions in the entire organization focused on human rights abuses in, in the united states. and if we look at the way that refugees in migrants are being treated in that country, it's hugely problematic. how do you take a report like this forward each? yeah, because you want those in power to act on it, but it's all about the lobbying process, isn't it? well, we have a group of advocates around the world who are going to use this report to go in to talk to governments and saying, look, what have you done? what haven't you done over the past year? we've been keeping track and we expected you to do much better. no, i mean a lot of it is also trying to figure out what is the actual. busy interest a particular governments what, what are the issues on human rights that they're prepared to take. busy for, you know, they're not evenly interested in human rights. sometimes you have to focus on
8:10 am
specific issues. you know, we have that sophisticated group of advocates with this report in hand. we're going to be able to do a lot, not only bilaterally, but ashley at the human rights council in geneva, at the security council in new york and other places where human rights should be front and center every day will be getting more reaction to your reporter as the day progresses globally, but for the moment to fill roboson, the asia director of human rights was joining us from chicago to thanks so much for your time. again. thank you. russian forces led by mercenaries from the vulgar group say the units are in control of the eastern ukrainian town of solid all. but keith denies the salt lining. thomas fallen the fighting though and in the wood, has led to some of the bloodiest battles of the war so far. the sasha butler has mo, from keith, the in solid. all the battle is relentless. the
