a cobra from stuff in this classroom. she saw this as my, and my role africa direct on al jazeera news from al jazeera on the go and need to know out is there is only a mobile app. is that the, this is where we dissect online to find with from out is there is a mobile app available in your favorite app to just set for it and tapped them out . and you up from out, is there a new at you think it, it ah, the us pauses activity at 3 airports as president biden says they will take care of
10:01 pm
a suspected chinese surveillance balloon in it says base. aah! lo i, marianna mossey and london, you're watching al jazeera also coming up on the program is ready, protest is keep up. the pressure on benjamin netanyahu is far right government and it's judicial reform plans. 13 palestinians injured in on is riley raid on refugee county jericho. that has been locked down for days. hope frances means children displaced by conflict in south to dawn and urge them urge them to rewrite that history. as a history of peace and the windshield drops to minus 75 celsius in new hampshire is a powerful arctic blast sweeps across the us northeast. ah,
10:02 pm
ah, hello and welcome to the program. now the united states has shut down 3 airports because of what the federal aviation administration is saying is a national security efforts. it comes as what suspected to be a chinese surveillance balloon has been flying across the country. us president joe biden says the united states is quote, going to take care of the balloon, which has been spotted above the north carolina. it was responding to a question on whether it be shut down, which is what the republicans are calling full bent again says a 2nd chinese fire balloon has been seen flank flying over costa rica. china says the craft is a civilian weather balloon that was blown off course on. now let's get more of this from mike kenner and washington. first of all, what do we know about the temporary closure of these 3 airports which fall across the carolina coastline?
10:03 pm
well this is in terms of a directive issued from the essay which says that the ports in south carolina and north carolina all operations at charleston, myrtle beach. and the wilmington airports have been suspended ground operations. and the sky above has been cleared. now, according to the release from the f a, this comes into effect at 1745 zulu, which is 1745 greenwich time, which if i'm correct, that's in about 45 minutes. the closure starts, the s space will be closed according to their directive for 2 hours from that particular time. now reading into this, certainly the reports coming out that administration officials say that the balloon could be shut down once it hits the atlantic, once it crosses the coast and is over the ocean. the supposition now is that the balloon will be shut down at that particular point. previously,
10:04 pm
military leaders had advised against bringing down the balloon because of the threat to civilian life on the ground. that was the concern of military leaders. president biden says, we're going to do whatever, not very clear about what is happening, but it does appear with all of these factors coming together that it is being contemplated to bring down the balloon. should the wind push it out over the atlantic? the closure of the airport and i suppose a clearing of the area eliminate the risk of something going wrong. possibly people getting hurt. i suppose there has been any more information from that, from the federal aviation administration, or any other officials about the possible risks. what i think the supposition is, is that they are going to wait for the balloon to cross the coastline and other words to be in place above the atlantic. so that it could be brought down or shut down, landing in the atlantic, which would
10:05 pm
a minimize the risk of any civilian casualty and be also possibly allow access to what is on that balloon. be it spy gear. be at what the chinese claim that it's a scientific a balloon. so that would be the reason why they would wait until the balloon crosses the coastline and is over the atlantic ocean before taking whatever action they deem necessary. now this is an ongoing situation. we have got the route, the release from the if a now we will see within the next are whether that closure does in fact come into effect. it does appear given the timings here that there is a clear timeline. once again, we'd have to look to the weather office for reports about wind directions, because this is a critical issue in terms of whether or not the balloon is going to be pushed off a land to be pushed over the coastline and over the atlantic ocean,
10:06 pm
which it appears is what is being hope for from the bite and administration and its military leaders if they are going to bring the balloon down. all right, thank you very much, mike. with the latest on this from washington. i nod tongan as a senior fellow at the ty, hey, institute, think tank in beijing is as chinese explanation that it's a weather balloon that was blown off course. is the most likely one? well, you have a balloon with the size of 3 buses that is apparently floating over the united states. the national weather organization of the united states is confirmed that it's consistent with being blown off course over the pacific, down through canada and into the u. s. the idea that this is a quote spy balloon. the whole point about spying is to gain information by subterfuge. by not being detected, having a, you know, something that big that is high here,
10:07 pm
obviously can be seen by the naked eye would hardly qualify as a huge the idea that, you know, we're going back to, you know, 200 years ago in floating balloons around and somehow those are the newest weapons of choice when in fact drones are and satellites. so it's not, it doesn't make any sense. it doesn't hold water. ah, for protests have been taking place against israel's coalition government for a 5th successive saturday. large crowds gathered in tel aviv and west jerusalem, although the protest was smaller than in previous leagues. coalition of prime minister benjamin netanyahu, his most right wing in israel's history as widespread anger against his proposals to weaken the powers of the supreme court. which critic say are anti democratic m
10:08 pm
on con was at the protest in west jerusalem. while the government got a very simple strategy, when it comes to dealing with the protesters, it actually simply ignores them. it's still has a way for the majority are within the parliament to push through it's agenda and they seem to be doing exactly that. but it is difficult for ignore this kind of number. let me just show you around. this is a small, a protest than we've seen in recent weeks, but they all outside of the president's house, probably minister benjamin netanyahu is a residence, is actually just a few minutes walk away from here. now these scenes are taking place across israel . something like 20 towns are actually protesting, and they include tel aviv and heifer as well now at its height of the protest me. but a few weeks ago was getting about a 130000 people out on for the streets. now though last week's vega was around $30000.00 in a few hours, we'll know from the virtual police forces what the figure will be for this. but it
10:09 pm
is far smaller than i've seen in recent weeks. and that's actually good news for the government in terms of the kind of prussia that the protest movement can put on them. they're more, it dwindles, the more people simply get used to the idea that they are coming out, and perhaps other people should be protesting on their behalf rather than coming out and huge number. that's a problem for the protest. read what they're trying to do is but russia on the government in game it really is to force another election, but even the protesters here know that they are currently in a minority, that the vast majority of israel is still support ramirez. the benjamin netanyahu, or 13 palestinians have been wounded after his railey weighed on refugee camp near jericho and the occupied west bank. this is the latest incident in an escalation of tensions in which $36.00 palestinians and 6 israel had been killed since the start of the year, than at smith reports from ramallah. for more than

a week israeli fort as have kept jericho locked down and its residence at bay as they search for suspects in a drive by shooting on saturday morning, the israeli military thought located who they were looking for and rated a refugee camp on jericho's outskirts a house was hit with an anti tank missile and those inside surrendered. according to the military, rough and murmur, houses were targeted as if the residents were criminals, while they were asleep in their houses, civilians you have nothing to do with the incident on mama. no one has been allowed to move freely out of this town of 37000 people in the occupied west bank. after shots were fired near an illegal israeli settlement in the area. no one was injured in that incident. it's unusual for so many people to be locked down for this long, but then these are exceptional times in the occupied west bank. so far. 36 palestinians have been killed this year in confrontations with the israeli military

. and there are a far i ministers in the israeli cabinet, committed to expanding settlements and making life much tougher for palestinians than it already. it's bernard smith, al jazeera ramallah. hope francis has met people affected by the conflict in south sudan. the head of the catholic church is on a 6 day trip in africa. he spent the 1st 3 days in the democratic republic of congo . all than 4000000 south sudanese had been forced to flee their homes because of the civil war that's been going on since 2013 course south. saddam was the next stop. on his trip, the pontiff spoke to displace people in the capital about his hopes for peace would with you bear the burden of a painful past. yet you never stop dreaming of a better future. in our meeting today, we would like to give wings to your hope armor tasa gave us this update earlier from juba. oh, francis is inside the whole day behind me and he's been meeting people displaced by

the conflict. and let me telling him about their experiences. some of them say they been displayed since 2013 when war broke out. and the winds here and juba are staying near the un based the un compound. they wouldn't be in 2013 because they thought they'll be safe any a un soldiers. and they're telling the pope that they thought that they'll only be there for a few months, but it's been years and years because they just don't feel safe going home. they say that they want him to urge politicians here to ask the government to deploy the 3 unified army as soon as possible. so that could be protected if and when they return home. and they also say they want the pope to urge politicians to get people here to do more to war towards implementing peace in the country. the pope came out and he said to the people, they must stay strong. who knows? it's hard. he knows the conflict effect of people on the ground, ordinary people on the ground. he says he's going to pray for them and he's going to urge politicians to do more towards peace and reconciliation. the reception has
10:13 pm
been very, very good. i mean, when they arrive thousands of people lined the streets, willing and eager to greet all these religious leaders. this the predominant christian country and the church have a lot of respect here. and in the past, the church has played a huge role in resolving conflicts between different ethnic groups and different political parties. so people do think that having the pope here and these other leaders is a good sign. they say that they hope that the politicians always speak to these legislators will listen to them, and enough press will be put on the president and other politicians to try and resolve the issues here in this country or east african region. leaders have been meeting in burundi. they have renewed their calls for an immediate cease fire by all sides in the east, in a democratic republic of congo and 23 rebels who congress as a bite borrow wanda. have siege sees large areas of north kiva province since october, thrusting the provincial capital coma. mark web has more for us now from blanco. this is

ukraine. ah, potassium p, sharla where people are demanding action from the pakistani authorities to stop attacks. my aunt ah, it's a changed pattern night. the weather over europe, all the wintry stuff takes place in the middle and down the southeast you see declared streaming down that's really colder. and in contrast, precious built for the west, which means although it's winter sun, it's doing some work and lifting temperatures, sofa from spain and portugal, the low warnings of low temperature, it's slowly fitting, bit better. but as a real shock, particularly baseline bulgaria is the high temperature of minus 4. athens is dropping down to 5 and that's without thinking about the wind as well. in contrast

to wind the south, westlake making things rather be mild in the whole of ireland and scotland. some parts of england are enjoying the sunshine as well. but that is where it's stormy. strong winds running down through the adria taken towards the central mediterranean will hit the north african coast. it's fine. the west is that cost, the worst is to the east, through our turkey a good deal of snow falling in. if you say that in cyprus and levant, wind and rain, and there's this shock added to athens and probably stumble because of the wind. it's even worse. i think the turkey during monday, but for the rest of eastern parts of europe, the sun has returned. it's still cold is no longer windy or snowy below. what is happening in the western met. another storm system growing. ah, the 1970s was a pivotal, told him to send them our own theater in the middle east and north africa agreed back. in the 2nd of

to take care of a suspected chinese surveillance balloon that's been flying through american as space protested. being held in tele, even west jerusalem against these righty, governments proposals to reform the judicial system changes would make it easier for parliament to over time. supreme court rulings, and pope frances has been meeting people affected by the conflict and south sudan. that of the roman catholic church was joined by the heads of the church of england and at the church of scotland on the trip to call for an end to a decade long civil war of its displaced 4000000 people. so now joined by a right reverend doctor in green shells, a moderator of the general assembly of the church of scotland to as part of this visit to south sea don, thank you very much for taking the time to speak to us. so it's been over a decade since independence for the world's youngest country, and they are still plagued by terrible violence and political in fighting. what was it like to be that going to credible speeding and really just

divide. the 3 was being them together was quite amazing. that show the thing was accountable statement of unity. you can speak to people about piece of you don't live in yourself. so i think that in itself was, was very powerful, real optimism or, and maybe this is the time when things will begin to start to turn and change. and certainly all the services to do with the political leaders were present and the big service for unity and for peace. later on in the day, there was quite a straight talking from everybody to the political leadership. to tell me more about that, what was the, what were the conversations like, how would you describe the tone of also some very strong remarks from the pope? how did that resonate? of course, when conversations we were using,
10:20 pm
the ability to preach to, to make the message very, very clear. yes. the pope was quite firm in what he was saying, expecting that not much had happened in the 40 years 5 years since they had tried to get things rolling and i real same. so unless you have a country that's a piece, you know, good to have other countries providing inward investment and you're going to find people continue like vulnerable because of the continued violence. and you're not going to better at the prosperity of the people are there. as you said in the interview there, at the beginning, formerly people displeased and i'd to that of the 11000000 people in the population . probably about 9 and a half 1000000 of those living in poverty. and probably somewhere around $67000000.00 living in really desperate poverty. and the things were to change for
10:21 pm
the wash in terms of flooding, air, or famine, it could reach quite the critical mass to conference, have different things that climate change also playing a role. now they're at risk of famine, and some of these violence possibly amounts to war crimes and crimes against humanity. many things happening every day. but why do you think this? we could be on the verge of, of change? i hope that what was said to and what has been said across the whole board to the dress team say i can lead us and not charge me. there's the what well together, but people who are associated in terms of leadership. but these churches, i hope that they had clearly what was being said the they were encouraged to think in terms of a legacy, what's the legacy,
10:22 pm
the personal legacy that they are going to leave. and i'm, i'm very st talking about accountability to go as well optimally for their behavior . and to, to think in terms of that coming things road so that the scene in a positive light. and the legacy is seen in a post of late rather than at the end of the day being hunted as, as what criminals. what about the politicians enjoy that they have facilitated and supported these militias. in order to gain influence does the political will exist to and violence? that's a big question, isn't it? where people listening. if they were listening where the listening with a view to change or where they just being polite and listening and that you cannot tell what the answer to that is,
10:23 pm
until you start to move into the future. they will have to happen in the future is that this isn't just done here. we've come with co energy into this. and then we just leave a vacuum. i think that the external chuck cheese, who have been invited after all, to come in by the, the government and by the churches are going to continue to play a rachel role in ensuring that some measure of progress is made. ready otherwise people will just abandon, so sit done, and that would be grateful for the ordinary person in the street. a thank you very much for joining us. i do appreciate it. head of the church of scotland, reverend in green shields. who is that and job accompanying the pope on his trip to south? you don't. thank you very much. thank your pleasure to speak to the

friday and made fears of hypothermia and frost bite. the windshield reached minus $75.00 degrees celsius at the summit of mount washington gable elizondo is in boston. the people of boston are used to cold weather this time of year. that's nothing new. the differences, these are temperatures that have dropped down to record lows. hasn't been this cold in boston since 1957. how cold is it exactly? at one point it was negative 23 degrees celsius and with a windshield factor, it dropped down to negative 33 degrees. not only here in boston, but it's in the entire north east of the united states, particularly the new england area, where about 14000000 people live all with sub 0 temperatures for the last 24 to 48 hours or so. they're imploring people to stay inside

and only to go outside if absolutely necessary. because the conditions were such that in these temperatures, any skin that is exposed to the elements could start to see some frost bite in under 10 minutes. now the temperatures are starting to slowly come up just a little bit here so you might be able to see behind me now some people are out. ice skating here, playing ice hockey on this frozen pond behind me. but clearly this was one of the coldest. basically one of the coldest fronts of air to come in to the northeast here in decades. and in one point mount washington in new hampshire. that was unbelievably cold. it got down to negative $78.00 degrees celsius. it was the coldest recorded temperature anywhere in the united states.
