hours time. all eyes on capitol hill is by and is expected to address a deeply divided congress, economic uncertainty and policing reform. the war in ukraine and tensions with china also expected to be high on the agenda by he goes into the speech with flagging approval, rating of 42 percent, the worst over 2nd year approval rating for us president. while the head of the speech top democrats and republicans have laid out there competing views of the country. but i think you're here today is a clear contrast between democrats who get stuff done, who deliver for every day americans and have a vision to make life better for the american people in to the future. and a group of chaotic dysfunctional and extreme maga, republicans who want to turn back the clock. joe biden must answer for his failed leadership. whether it's the border crisis, continuing to rage at our southern border crashing inflation and over $30000.00

a national debt or a balloon from communist china entering into the united states sovereign airspace. joe biden has caused a crisis in america. oh, now go live to our white house correspondent, kimberly how could she's at her capitol hillock? kimberly presumably, joe biden will be very much looking to shore up domestic support and what has been a difficult past year with huge international distractions. there's no question that the president is looking to sharp domestic support, given the fact that in many ways this state of the union speech, the president, 2nd is really a kind of a de facto pitch to the american public for a 2nd term in office. and so many americans, well there have been those international distractions, really focused on the things that matter most to them domestically right now. and that in most cases are the things that cost
2:22 am
a lot of money right now in the united states. it's food, it's, it's housing and it's getting to work, putting a fuel in their automobiles. and so the cost of energy is also on the minds of most americans. they're looking for answers about how the president is going to combat that. and that's where the president has a bit of a problem because inflation is still high in the united states. so the. 6 president is going to be talking about the economy, but in the midst of all of that, he does have some good news. there has been in the last week or so some good news on the economy. in fact, historic unemployment rate now at a low historically the half century expect the president to talk about that. but still, the president, as you mentioned, has some lower approval ratings that he's dealing with as well. so that is going to be a problem too. so the president is going to be making the case to the american public of what he believes can turn things around some of the agenda items that he wants to accomplish in the next 2 year things he wants congress to spend money on to
2:23 am
improve everyday life for ordinary american things like spending money on improving the lives of veterans and tackling the high suicide rate for veterans for another agenda. item will be in the high opi crisis in the united states and spending money on that priority. tackling cancer and, and fighting the number of high cancer deaths in the united states. and will also get a glimpse of the president sort of road map of priorities by the guess list of doctor jill bite. and that's the 1st lady of the united states. we know at least one of those guests will be the parents of tyree nichols. you'll remember that very graphic videotape of, of tyree nichols being killed by memphis police in the last couple of weeks. his step father, as well as his mother, will be a guest of honor in the audience. we also know that another prime guest of honor will be bondo, a prominent activist, as well as singer, is highlighting the president said priority when it comes to combating poverty. but
2:24 am
in the midst of all of this is the president makes his pitch to another term in office at 80 years of age. republicans are going to be making the rebuttal and they're going to have a very popular governor sarah. huckabee sanders. remember, she was the press secretary for donald trump? well, she is half of the president's age. they're going to be highlighting that contrast, and also the contrast in legislative priorities as well. kind of making the message that joe biden to agenda is a radical left agenda. and what's needed in america right now is common sense. conservative principles. so divided america, even as joe biden is pitching unity. as you mentioned, kerry, we're going to have it here live on al jazeera. we're going to carry the full speeches. it's going to begin in just about under 3 hours time. we will indeed kimberly, for now. thank you for staying with us. joining us live from washington,

d. c. is jeff. how's that? he's executive director of the revolving door project. the center for economic and policy research. welcome to the program. so how much substance come you expect in this coming speech and how much will be a political messaging in your opinion? i think there will be a lot of substance, but it will be very abstract, very high level. the state of the union speech is notoriously difficult. busy or speech writers, because the president must touch on every issue that is important. the key elements of his constituency, his political party, and the country. as a whole notorious scene, the united states international affairs, moves fewer voters than it should. but they're obviously very important issues in ukraine, in turkey and syria. and of course the fascination in america with the chinese balloon. but then you have a wide range of economic issues. so i think he'll touch on many issues,
2:26 am
but he'll do so very briefly and without a tremendous amount of detail. and how many of the goals of last year's speech were actually achieved. i mean canny point to some winds. i think he can point to some winds in the sense there were built that were pass through difficult it in the dimmer in the congress where democrats had 5050 in the senate. and we control the marginally via vice president harris and very narrow control in the house that representatives. so there were bills tasks and some of them had republican boats. and so if you were looking for bipartisanship, i think by an exceeded expectation in that regard. and he had made progress on environmental issues and he had represented the united states well, with respect to ukraine and other international issues. but in the, you know, inflation has gone down, but i don't think he has success in the sense of turning around americans.
2:27 am
perception of how the country is doing. i don't blame joe biting for, that's the problem that america is facing or a deep seated. but we're in a situation where the incumbent has to speak of how he can make things better, are recognizing that the political system in this country is not conducive to positive change. you mentioned votes them. and how important is this speech to the boating public? is it something that dramatically changes their views over the present? it will not tonight. i meanwhile many millions of americans will watch more. american voters will not watch by a large margin and will watch. but this speech is very important for what happens in the next 24 to 72 hours and how that sets up the rest of the year. fragments of this speech will be represented and forwarded on all forms of social media. this speech reflects the point of view of

a president who is not only in the midpoint of his presidency but his seeking reelection. so if continue, it articulates the themes of his nathan reelection campaign, his unofficial but very real reelection campaign. and so he is trying to create momentum and he is trying to give language to it's a quarter to carry on across all sorts of forums, be they the internet or in real life. so it's very important to see how well he can make those steams occur. and honestly what he can, what republicans speak up most loudly and get the most know attacking him are those the republicans that joe biden wants to be seen fighting with if he had seen fighting with marjorie taylor green and other extreme maga, republicans that is to jo biden's benefit is to republicans come across better. that's not going to work as well. so right. find me by, forgive me. we're gonna have to stop there. we've run out of time. but jeff, how's
