on the ground rigorous debate, we challenged conventional wisdom and demand the truth upfront with me, mark lamar hill went out there, lebanon's state of collapse has become the country's new normal economy, is in ruins, is living on a failed state. so very tough question, because to prove otherwise is difficult, will lebanon be able to change course, the economy minister. i mean, talk to me . oh, trapped in the rubble for days and still alive, the astonishing rescue of a child and his mother and took here as hope faith for more survivors. ah,

rebel and d. i buckhead such teams a working relentlessly bought chances of finding more people alive are fading by the hour. we have correspondence across to a kia covering this stephanie deka is in new, doggie, near the syrian border and basin. so that is then cut among mirage. the epi center of the disaster and race will talk us through what's been happening there. we've seen over the course of the day of your reporting, more bodies being pulled out from under the rubble behind you. well, blogs off their blogs, apartments, all the apartments have collapsed here in the city off guard. i'm. i'm rushed. it was his twice in 9 hours. now i'm in front of one of the blocks that is completely leveled down here. and you can see that distribution is quite celtic here. the rest your force ought frantic. the heavy lifting machinery is the vehicles are still
2:03 pm
working, rescue teams are, are working relentlessly. however, they are running out of the time. so these buildings collapsed buildings right over there is almost a fresh graveyard in the last 24 hours. that has been dozens and dozens of the bodies taken out for a month of the rivals. but none of them were ally, unfortunately. so just within the last silly hours here, i have seen 9 buddies being pulled out from under the rubble. and unfortunately none of them was alive again. so they are being taken to put into their black bags . and dan, taken to their ambulances for the hospital and down to be delivered to their families and for their, their final, for their funeral. so here, the rescue teams from time to time, they are calling for the silence. they, according to cause to turn off people to keep silence their machines to stop
2:04 pm
because they, they, they, the pink, they heard that voice, and then everyone is getting just silence quiet. and the rescue teams are starting to listen. the robles hoping to have a voice coming out from the robbers and then they are screaming into the robles asking shut in if any one can hear them. but then after a minute or 2, then the work restarts again and dreamed debts, couple of minutes, you can see the change in the family is faces. first they get whole and then the, the pain of the world reflects itself on their face. this is just one of the scenes that you can see here that are pounds of the seems that goes to city of god. i'm on much similar to this, and this is one part of the street. the other part is definitely not better than what you can see now. but families here are particularly important because those will survived. definitely bear having
2:05 pm
a misery. here. it is the 5th day that they are waiting here and still hoping to have something or to get their relatives back, dead or alive, and their pain is prolonged. so i met some of them that zahida has been waiting here for more than 80 hours, hoping to find her loved was her son, daughter in law and grandchild, are still on this robin reports on may so that people know my pain. my dear ones are burning under this rubble. this syria family has 6 relatives in the same collapsed building. they fill out the civil war and came to caught among rush to begin a new, safe with life. here. this turkish m seating families are now sharing the same pain . people are trying to call unless they are relying on aid and sleeping in cars
2:06 pm
as the off the shocks continue. o n n. a laughlin pat i god shall save us. we are now refugees. she says that death and life are intertwined. here, as survivors are for why the food, the dead bodies keep of writhing. this was one of the largest stadiums in common rush. it has now been turned into tense city. for those who survived that houses $3000.00 people around 15 in each tent. oh donna and her family moved in this tent a day ago. she says she and her 3 children had to survive sub 0 temperatures for 2 days. when her home was heavily damaged. some of her relatives also died in the disaster. grande's, the alaska young we are saying as much as attend can defend us kids cold at night.
2:07 pm
i have the 3 year old son. he is scared as soon as the tent shakes and runs towards me. asking, is it happening again among the residents here? are served food and warm clothes, but at night the weather is extremely cold. they say they struggle to stay warm, especially the children i as the sun sets above his phone. oh, her son has been pulled out from under the rubble, but he's not alive. this rub, old behind me now are turning into a grave yard stories like so. he does one heart multiply and these are the stories that are shared by um, that has all families here. this, it has been hit twice. and now nearly 6000 people, our dad and nearly a 1000 buildings are collapsed. so there are still thousands,
2:08 pm
hundreds, and even maybe thousands of people under this rob over here and the families are waiting anxiously days and nights. i was just talking to some of them. they have their families close relatives here their sisters, they voted in law their psalms. just a man who was coming from dead town of alliston, which is in this province of caught him on mother. she told me that his brother is on the rubble in august on, but he came here because his sister is also on the collapse, willing and up is get her body to give her a proper burial. so this is a re cert, jasa time source. the 55th day, they're running out of the time and the pain here is the resume and resume. the disaster is deepening and deepening. that is everywhere. particularly today. we can hear the smell of the dead bodies everywhere and the fray. the hopes here is really fated. this is difficult to fathom the scale of the tragedy their race will. thank
2:09 pm
you very much for the natives from god, amman mirage. let's go live now to stephanie deca. she's in the town of mood. maggie in ghazi on tech, province and wrestlers at the epicenter. but so much of this region has been devastated. hesitant stephanie, tell us what you've been seeing. yes, unfortunately, the message here is the same. what we've been witnessing throughout the day is just death is just body's being pulled from underneath the rubble to bodies were pulled from this building. i earlier on was spoke, he probably saw what they were doing was shielding the body with blankets. and then what happens is they bring a body bag they put in the body, they carried away so to from there. and then we also had a mother and her child pulled from another building which is just there's a couple of buildings collapsing. really. everything is collapse where we are right now. and her father basically had lost his daughter and his grandchild sobbing behind them. they oscars here not to film when the bodies are carried away in
2:10 pm
respect for the dad and for the families that it is 5 days on it is freezing. it's all the same challenges across the entire region and finding survivors is less and less likely allah. i'll just get that fatty to show you a little bit. there is a massive operation here because they still have 28 bodies here. and one of the volunteers the rescue workers was telling me that the way they operate here is think a room by room. they know more or less how the layout of building is and because the quite struck so early in the morning at 417, everyone would have been in bed. so what we've also been seeing once they find the mattress and they're pretty sure that a body will be somewhere close. so this is the way it's happening all across the region. we're actually on our way to is law here, which is our a city further down. and we were, we were absolutely floored by the destruction along the road. so we just just
2:11 pm
stopped. and i think that highlights the extent of the damage and i don't think it's conveyed on tv. you can sense it and drone shots, even the drone shots give you just one city. once you're driving and you're passing towns and cities and villages and you see pretty much almost everything destroyed along the way it's, it's very difficult to comprehend. and the other thing about this tragedy is that entire families have been lost. are you talking to a woman here? a building just here, she said, i have 4 of my brothers, my mother, my cousins, and all of her nieces and nephews, which were the children of those brothers all gone in an instant when the, when the building just completely pancakes upon itself. so this is the tragedy of the people when you're talking about hundreds of thousands of homeless and effected, you're talking about tens of thousands of injured the death toll for certain is going to rise just because just listening to their soul and seeing what we're seeing dead bodies carried out now on a very regular basis. so yeah,
2:12 pm
an absolute tragedy that has happened here that people are having to live with. well, thank you for giving us trying to give us a scale of the disaster. stephanie that stephanie take a lie for us in nat, no doggy and ghazi on tip and cynical seal news at the turkish governance relief coordination center and the capital anchor. with the latest we had a chance to speak to one of the agency, disaster management agency officials. and he said, yes, there are some places that we weren't able to reach out to. we couldn't go to some of the places where aware of that and the turkish president also accepted this on air. but of course, we are hearing lots of stories from, from the field as our reporters have been explaining since the beginning of this earthquake. and we are also listening to people that we can reach out to a talk on the phone a but apparently it also seems as not very possible to reach everywhere. because
2:13 pm
the offer, the disaster management agency representative. it told us that the area that the earthquake affected is more than 100000 square kilometers and, and according to the environment ministry, the inhabit, there are 13 and a half 1000000 inhabitants in this area, which means those millions are directly affected. and one was to pick people. everybody has some one trapped under those rebels, at least one person a from that area. so this is a difficult task. we sometimes we calculate, we do mathematics with our friends here. ah, this is a very tough job, and there are more than 120000 search and rescue teams on the ground. these are the turkish rescue teams. and so far, nearly 7000 international rescue teams have arrived and they have been in the, in the field a trying to rescue those people trapped on the drugs. and they are going to be more coming. and ever they more international aid and more international search and
2:14 pm
rescue teams are arriving and trickier. now across the board of northern syria, 6 trunks carrying aid from the united nations have arrived. it's the 1st convoy to reach rebel held areas in the country since earthquakes bosses dana hold, reports much more help is needed. lives lost, shattered by mondays, earthquakes, northwest, syria's humanitarian crisis, made worse. the region was hit just as hard as cities across southern turkey. but here, the people devastated by over a decade of war. wait for help. already. millions, live intense. the quake has made tens of thousands more homeless. but it, it can hold 9 members of our family and living in this team. we lost our homes, we need everything. clothes, food, the children are always hungry. we have nothing to keep. rescue teams have been working non stop with little resources and alone. as hopes of finding survivor's

fade, they say they have been abandoned by the international community to face the worst disaster they have encountered. requests for heavy machinery never came on thursday . the un acknowledged search and rescue operations covered 5 percent of the devastated sites. while we last 27 members of our family into quick 7 bodies have still not be retrieve, the civil defense needs help. the cross border aid operation from turkey, a resumed on thursday after it was disrupted partly to damage the infrastructure on both sides of the border. but the un was criticized for providing what many said were insignificant supplies. it says more assistance is coming. agencies, however, say politics is getting in the way of using more direct and effective routes. are report ways out. several concrete ways that that could happen. opening additional
2:16 pm
cross border routes from turkey, opening up cross line channels from other parts of syria, including the north east towards the rocky border or the south. obviously there would need to be a lot of guarantees of non interference that the government would need to accept in order for that channel to work and then an air bridge. government areas to are in a dire situation. un agencies which operate there are promising to scale up response across the country. but to cross the front lines they need approval from damascus, which has been accused of using access as a political pressure. and to use more border crossings will require a un resolution because of the objection of the syrian government and it's russian ally. so what we need is to scalar existing type of, of response that existed priority of quake. and mean the question of cross playing across boys would almost say is a moot point in many ways because what we need is somebody that works. medical

support is needed to an already crumbling infrastructure. the crisis deepens in this war torn land, santa hood, or l 0. we will have more on the aftermath of the earthquake. ne, so we speak to an engineer about why thousands of buildings supposed to be quake proof in turkey, collapse ah, serious, darkest days with one month leading the country through us, present to alice out as lost legitimacy. he needs to step down. how has he retained control through over a decade of war? we examine the global power games of president bashar al assad. we believe assad simply carrying out iranian orders. what keeps you awake at night? many a reason that could effect any human eyesight master of chaos on all jazeera ah,

which is here. when ever you oh, this is one of the sounding technological revelations in all history make our planet great. we have to meet the c o 2 emission targets lecture casa literature renovation. many to be mind to where people are just talking about wind in solar, is it that's going to solve the problem? it won't. the world of boosters in commerce is driving energy transition is the promise of clean energy and illusion. the top side of green energy on al jazeera, ah,
2:19 pm
ah, watching al jazeera with me, elizabeth bronman, doha mando awhile top stories the cell. more than 4 days have passed since 2 powerful earthquakes had to kia and syria. almost 22000 people have been reported dead. turkish rescue teams continue to dig through the problems, searching for survivors often by hand. freezing temperatures and snow have been slowing down their efforts, and the turkish government has defended itself against accusations that lacks enforcement of building codes cause new structures to collapse and the quakes authorities say the buildings when not built under their supervision. well, let's get more on this now. we are joined by to seattle rossetto, professor of earthquake engineering at university college, london. she is joining us live from london. very good to have you with us on al jazeera. so we've been seeing hearing that something like 6 to 7000 buildings collapsed on monday. it is only 4 days since the quakes trot,
2:20 pm
but from what you've seen so far, is this devastation, mainly because of the power of the quake. could shoddy construction play to pot well it's, it's a bit of a net, as you say, it's a little bit early to say the earthquake was definitely a massive events and actually not just one, but 2 very large events that have happen in rapid succession. so it, we would expect that to be large damage. this is an area garage region which essentially is own in terms of its urban isaiah. and so the, the buildings that are there, the older buildings are definitely vulnerable to, to earthquakes, to ground shaping. and it's actually really the buildings that were built in the last 10 years or so that would have had any level of seismic design. i know the coke road in turkey is very advanced homes.
2:21 pm
however, it also would not have taken into account the occurrence of the 2 larger grades and we see images or videos of modern buildings that were standing as a 1st earthquake event. and then yeah, it's not them. and yet we've also seen pictures of buildings that have been constructed in the last few years coming down as well. you mentioned that turkey has, you know, good building codes when it comes to the construction industry. but i want to ask you about, you know, things like construction, amnesty, so call construction. amnesty is legal exemptions from the payment of a fee for structures built without the required safety certificates. there are reports here that up to 75000 buildings across the affected area in southern turkey . to care have been given construction amnesty. that's according to the assignable
2:22 pm
head of the union of chambers of turkish in engineers. i mean, what do you make of these reports? food puts you. this is a flex. i've heard of that. i mean, the, the older construction in the area is definitely loanable. and we still have to do an engineering investigation. this will happen in the next phase. and at the moment, you know, the major assets are infection, rescue premature to make any conclusion here for sure. there are buildings, modern buildings, but collapse that we would like to investigate, particularly those that time, very large atrium. very tool, ground stories, which is a difficult design feature to accommodate buys name steiner. okay. it's something that will weaken. alright, let me pick up something. yeah, i think i'll, i'll just pick up on something you did mention. then the older buildings have
2:23 pm
collapsed and is it possible then that you can make these older buildings more resilient earthquakes? and if so was that done in this region? i'm not aware of the reason i believe any. so i think frank sending of the building has happened in an area that hasn't been hit for very long time for about 500 is unfortunately happened with the facts of such a long period before they happen. but sometimes the course and all of these events is neglected, forgotten and strengthening can be done in the construction, is costly and not pass and redemption. sure, but it can happen. all right, to the anna says her joining us live from london. they thank you very much for your

time. we appreciated the now russia has launched a wave of missile attacks across ukraine. several energy facilities and other critical infrastructure said to have been hit as go to cost one of the same bus robbie, he's joining us live from the ukrainian capital care of a dramatic morning there. and ukraine saying, with air raid sirens sounding across the country. tell us about the latest russian attacks that is correct this morning at 8 30 am local time in air raid siren went off countrywide. shortly thereafter and the hours that followed, the defense ministry warned of a 3rd wave of possible attacks before sounding the all clear. and now just a few minutes ago, another air raid siren warning has gone off across the country. this time we're hearing because of a russian make fighter jet that is taken off from bella,

russian aerospace, once again. so people bracing for possibly more strikes the likes of which we've seen this morning. let me give you a sense of what we saw happen today. at 8 30 am, we started seeing dozens of missiles being fired and there were done the projectiles from air land and sea. this is this tac included cruise missiles surface to surface missiles fired from the ground from russian positions around the country as well as unmanned kamikaze drones. the air defenses have been doing their work, a lot of these projectiles have been shot down by ukrainian air defenses. but many of them continue to hit what seem to be ongoing, rush and targeting of critical power infrastructure, critical bits of infrastructure on the civilian electricity grid. the energy minister has confirmed an emergency shut down of several areas. after at least 6 regions saw their thermal and hydro generation facilities and high voltage facilities, including transformers and substations all come under attack and at least 6 regions
2:26 pm
. what we're hearing is that these attacks are really hurting not only the civilian power grid but civilian space as well. one official and car keys described a power station that was hit as well as a public park. he said that this latest garage was one of the worst that the country has seen since the invasion day about a year ago. same. thank you for that same. this is robbie with the laces in kids. now, 1000 people in democratic republic of congo have fled their homes as in 23 fighters closing on the eastern time of san k. the connelly's army and the 23 have been fighting in the area since monday. the town is in the east of the country and the main road, the countries that to the 2nd biggest city of goldman. i'll come web has more from saki, 23 fighters carry rwandan military equipment. rwandan soldiers have been photographed with them or they were lumber, denies backing the group. now here in the town of sar k,
