moon one week ago the ground here under my feet, shook devastating to nations, killing thousands and impacting the world. i'm sammy's a van live from north that i and southern turkey. you're joining us for our special coverage marking a week since an earthquake that buried a region in grief. let's start by giving you some of the facts are where we stand now. more than 37000 are dead. more than 90000 have been injured. millions have lost their homes. and the president of turkey says,
6:03 pm
hundreds of thousands of buildings have been damaged and our uninhabitable all against all the odds. people have been pulled out of the rubble alive to day in our dear man, a young girl was rescued after a 178 hours in the cold in the rubble. well that's giving hope in places like here in order that may be, may just may be relatives will be able to pull out their loved ones from the rubble of places like this behind the i'm going ask our car, our camera man to give us a zoom in today's started here with some good news with hope. a young girl, an 18 year old sod. it pulled out alive from the rubble. she said, please help my sister. she's alive inside to well as the hours when tom, we were following the rescue effort to reach her and they did eventually reach her . but sadly,
6:04 pm
she was not alive. this area now is full of these kinds of stories full of this emotional rollercoaster of one minute hope. and the next minute the hopes crash far too often into despair into crying and wailing and grief. going ask off drone operate now to bring in the drone shot. so we can give you an idea of what we're talking about. this location was a collection of buildings or as they call them in turkish, a c t. now it's just a heap of rubble. but it's buried people's hopes for the future. a very difficult situation that all began with one fateful minute at 4 17 am. early on monday morning, as i explained in this report,
6:05 pm
about 417 a. m. local time. monday, the 6th of february. this security camera from a driveway in civic southeast to keir captures the rumble and the tower going out in another city, 2 hours or so further east. the earthquake sounds like gunfire. in gaussian tap, nurses rushed into the neonatal war to stop the babies. incubate his falling over. witnesses say the swaying roll of the earth lasted 2 minutes, but felt like a lifetime. and as buildings topple ah, crowds rush out on to the streets, wilderado thought of the illusion to save themselves yoga and surveyed the damage.
6:06 pm
to know that they are confronted with chaos. not one good luck. the magnitude 7.8 trema was one of the largest ever recorded in total care. it was powerful. as you can see, it was shallow and it was felt as far away as greenland. oh wow. across to the pier and the neighboring syria, the rescues began immediately on the torchlight and in the difficult conditions. i mm hm. people desperately digging through the rubble with their band. i engendered in northern syria rescue is from the white helmet group, pulled out a young baby who had been cradled in the arms of her dead,
6:07 pm
elder sister as well. and as 1st light broke, the scale of the disaster became clear. we have a team of correspondence covering this event and the one week since the 1st earthquake from right around took care. but 1st we're going to go to the epi center of the 2nd earthquake. that's in common, marsh was stephanie beckett, joins us from live there. and now stephanie, you've got also a very fluid situation developing their wants, the latest, where you are very active rescue operation that's been going on for over 24 hours now on fighting, chasing detail. we have much more activity happening now than in the last few hours . you have, the police helping miners are taking out rubble as they excavate a tunnel to war to 2 or 3 people that are alive. basically they called in the
6:08 pm
spanish rescue team yesterday they came with their rescue dog, the dog identified life. and as i was told, the dog is never wrong. and then they also double confirm that with thermal imagery, at least 2 people are alive. they believe that to be a mother, her new born baby, almost 3 weeks old, and potentially also a grandmother. so what you're seeing now is a meticulous rescue operation are they're digging a tunnel this way and also digging a tunnel the other way. and you have these spanish search and rescue team that have gone in in the last 10 minutes or so. they pushed forward again into this building because basically where they believe the people to be is 2 buildings through this building. so they're excavating through the rubble. it's a 7 story building that collapsed on itself on monday, 7 days later now. so i can tell you there is a throng of media here. everybody waiting for good news because of course, as we've been reporting throughout this week,
6:09 pm
it has been death and devastation and heartbreak. so these are the kinds of stories that people are really clinging on to the relatives remain here it is extremely cold and windy. they are sitting further up waiting for any good news, but certainly at the moment these people remain alive. this is a fact, and it is now a very meticulous insensitive operation to get to them because digging those tunnels are dangerous. i was told how dangerous it is there, fortifying it with wood at but you do still have very active aftershocks last night we had 2 very strong m at again, damage the tunnel. they had to start again. so very, very sensitive and slow work. but at the moment, good news remains that they remain alive, and again, it is a race against time. as i, as you see, they're making slow progress. thanks so much stephanie decker. they are well. a lot of international aid and, and rescue teens are continuing to korean. at this point,
6:10 pm
rescue teams consisting of 9000 people of ford in from around the world. bernard smith is at one location, its a military hospital run by the indian military. there. bernard, what's the latest where you are? yes, i mean, this is a, this is a field hospital of indian military if that's what we're at in a school, because across the street, the hospital is close damaged by the earthquake. the in the military arrived about 24 hours after the initial quake. $99.00 team of $99.00. here, 13 a doctors plus support staff and they have been treating initially traumatic trauma injuries. they had to remove the limb of one man and could deal with crushed bones and that sort of thing. and now it's changing. now they're treating mainly infectious diseases because there is now a public health issue. there is very little sanitation, there's no running water. people are living out on the streets and therefore there is this increased risk of infection infectious diseases. one other challenge for
6:11 pm
the turkish government here is counting the number of people who have died in this disaster. now we do know that only people who have been officially identified named are counted as dead. but about half of those who have been. busy killed so far in this quake have not been identified as scantrons, grave diggers must wear quickly. the noise from the heavy machinery disturbs war is normally a peaceful place. all of my booty asked lam waits with her surviving family for the bodies of one of her sons, his wife and their 3 children. they killed my son because they didn't send a crane to do the rescue. did my son have nothing to give this state? didn't he served them? he was the best mathematics teacher in hattie. how could that conscience accept
6:12 pm
this? after all of his others? all survivors contend and prey by the freshly dug graves of their loved ones. not all of the dead have been identified. so they are buried here. it's respectfully dumb, but there's little ceremony a no mourners, and sometimes not much left to bury. the victim is now a number d n a samples have been taken. if anyone comes looking in the future, only the dead who've been identified, accounted in the official death, told some estimate, saw that the identity of around half those killed in monday's earthquakes is unknown. the manager here, the cemetery, tells us these plots all the way up to the fence would take about 4 years to be filled up beforehand now in $3.00 to $4.00 days from the distraught survivors. the complaint we've heard regularly this past week that the government's rescue effort has been too slow. i learned that you are a tyrant. you have no conscience. you took my 5 kids. how could you let
6:13 pm
a whole family disappeared because of a crane? they are still under the rubble for 7 days now. even if they got winded by the quake, they are already dead now. you killed them. turkeys president has admitted failings in the initial response to the earthquake. red top heard one says the rebuilding will start within weeks. the frustration here is why did those buildings collapse in the 1st place? who now the indian left tenant colonel in charge of the operations here? he says that the local health system has collapsed. that is why people are relying on this, the only sort of health facility currently operating in a scam to run and the in is safe and not going to leave here until the levels of a 10 people coming between begins to drop off and there's no sign of that happening yet, sammy, there's no sign of those that was dropping off for terry walt burnett. what is dropping down rapidly? are the temperatures here? i'm gonna ask our cameraman joe,
6:14 pm
out if he can pan that camera ever so slightly there to the group of relatives. we're keeping her a distance so we don't intrude on them. but you can see talking about temperatures . they're now trying to keep themselves warm by burning, whatever they can, keeping themselves warm by the fire. and you might be able to see keeping them memories warm by looking through their photo albums. remembering the life that they had, all that life that they had. we can now take a look at it or what's left to it through the drone. right behind me that's their building that. busy their home, that was where they lived. sadly, you'll be able to see in the drone shop, a lot of buildings have been reduced to rubble, if not damaged it. so it, so i don't know what to say radio. i mean,
6:15 pm
the words really fail in describing the level of devastation as far as your eyes can see and look, everything is, is wiped out. there's a great need for housing. nato secretary general has been talking about how the allies are now going to provide to care with housing support. well, housing, just one of the reasons for the political pressure that's building on the president . let's go over to asset vague, is life for us in this stumble asset? how's he dealing with that pressure? well, he's dealing with it. he's been considerable pressure on president or the and the government. one is in terms of the slow response, fine to break and something that says, i thought that there was a slow response, but there's also those that they know. this is a massive disaster. the largest great country of space and 100 years is the largest
6:16 pm
ethic of the century, the some of the rescue team. today the factors rose with them as you have of the rescue us the weather, which made some very difficult to get to yes, there's also questions run the construction and the government has said that the sets up the special commission to investigate these issues. crimes rhonda, specifically looking at the construction of buildings and those that constructed them and they said $134.00 people was affected. them investigating those have been people detained including both but also some people think, well the bucks up was the government. they were building regulations back in 2000 and those and some of those buildings that were just those people pay fines and those buildings remain. so this still those now the other issues about housing, those people that been affected by the president, i was wondering does university education go on line until the end the student dome,
6:17 pm
who has those affected? by the way, not the minister of youth said, there are 200000 people have been has the student again, that was criticized of the opposition, the republican party. he came out and said that this may be more than good that they shouldn't forget the youth. but there's also criticism that this may affect news mobilization for the opposition election that was set to take place in may not, we don't know when those are the students and academics took to social media to say that the student don't speak me used to has those affected by the government should be looking got your residency hotels, a safe guess? has it now we don't send them by and large. most people were defending when we visited those don't. after being told the news, the government plan to has earthquakes of ivers in university accommodation. the students in stumble had to vacate their dorms at short notice the k their
6:18 pm
belongings and said their goodbyes. celsius would not be moved online until the end of june. didn't get it off to the prisoners, made a speech the same evening. we learned that our blocks will be emptied. we are sad, it's like the panoramic period. we will have online education. we did not want that and we have some credits and, and i got granted to be and we have nothing to do with making a sacrifice on our education, is bothering me a bit to be able to help. the parents came to help very children pack and move with . we do want to do our parts to help the families in need. i am sad that i'm not going to go to school, but also the situation is pretty bad. so i know that family needs a place to say so. yeah, i don't really feel too bad. i educate the system in the affected area has been hit . but the government says it's determined to make sure that his minimum disruption to education can talk on my little bit by building additional tense, we will support our children's learning process and conduct
6:19 pm
a series of activities to normalize life. we have up to 14110 in the stance. we have preschool teachers and psychological counseling and guided all our teachers on duty inside the dorms, they're ready to receive the factories. here in istanbul, most of the students we spoke to were happy to be doing their bit. not all students have to leave those with family affected by the earthquake international students. medical students, as well as the old with no fun me, they can stay with can all remain. but this is a part of the effort and sacrifice the entire country has been asked to make to deal with this disaster. a survey of jazeera assemble, sophia la, said, was talking there about these issues regarding construction before they can really get deeply into that. of course they've got to finish the recovery effort that's going on across to care, but a 6th friendly, active right now in on taco,
6:20 pm
as natasha. her name explains on takia has been described this week as a city of earthquake ruins this street that we're on, gives you an excellent indication as to why this was about a 5 story building over here with apartments businesses on the bottom. and then when you cross the street, as far as the i can see down the road was a massive apartment complex were told, hundreds of families once lived here. this city has been decimated, the population was about 200000. during the last senses, one man told me we are psychologically broken. there are no services. people have been told to evacuate yet some do remain. and that is because they are holding age, sol shattering week long vigil outside the rubble of their loved ones. holmes, clinging to a sliver of hope. however, infant testimony that they will be granted
6:21 pm
a miracle rescue. these people also are homeless. they've been living out in the open because they've lost their homes. they say they've been given a food. they've been giving clothing, but they have no shelter. they've complained that it took 3 to 4 days for search and rescue operations to begin here in earnest. they also say that it has been a very slow process trying to find out what has happened to their loved ones, but they want to remain. they just can't leave until that happens. one of the buildings we visited today was the focus of a case in the court system surrounding it structural integrity. now there are dozens of families waiting outside for hope of their loved ones. one man told us he knows that his nephew is in, was inside that building at the time because they pulled out his wallet and his id card. now, since this earthquake hit, there has been a national reckoning regarding a well known use of shining co, shoddy construction materials,
6:22 pm
and lacks enforcement of building codes in compliance with earthquake engineering standards. for years, warnings were issued, amnesty is given and now people are angry. the coverage is, you know, it's wrong to blame the government, although they've made mistakes. i think all the responsibilities on the contractors is on law calling your our history is here. i have footprints on every street of this town. if i leave here, it means to leasing my past. now it's like a new century. thank you. everyone will start a new century with many traumas. a lot of the ministry of justice says, arrest warrants have been issued for 100. 34 people. 3 have been arrested so far and police are looking for about a 100 suspects in connection with these building code violations regarding the people here in antalya. they say this diverse city with ancient roots will surely rebuild. but they are coming to terms of the fact that due to this
6:23 pm
devastation of historic proportions, it will take a very long time will despite that devastation that natasha is talking about. there have been to day, incredible moments of hope and joy as people were pulled out of the robber. is one example of how the math, a young girl pulled out off to a 178 hours under the cold, under the rubble mill. i was her name, no rescue as was said to be close to reaching her older sister as well. let's hope they will find them. like say the window though. so it's such, rescues is nearly sharp. there causes a freezing temperature because of the number of collect building. there's a lot of rubble to get through. there's a lot to clean up. a lot of now explain from the a mind this is the turkish 50 off idea mind that has been
6:24 pm
considered as the 3rd most effective city with the great that sure turkey. one week i go off my, my, us and hawkeye to seems to be working institute. but the main thing that pops up here is that the teams are starting to remove that of the, of the heavy to destroy building such that such as the ones that we are seeing. now, more than 2600 didn't being totally caught up in a d. i'm on it because kills more than 3700 so far, according to the local authority, that was of the seems to protest to move that up. and it's really important, as she told us, it's important because it's allowed to clean the seats and also it allows thought, moving. also the big stuff i have the, the damage has doubled up. yet, these hops,
6:25 pm
when things read that the people of mine are facing in the days that followed. quade the city has also with the tom stuff allocated to the family that has lost their house. if he comes in be, i'm case of the city is away from the been things has been said also to feel hospitals are working in to care for the people who are, who are, who are as an estate off. so me off, especially young people, children. this is the, the situation in mind. if the support, nothing is going to be done here. they need, they maybe week to remove all that. so the life in the fifty's can be resumed
6:26 pm
again. as hard as the situation is in places like audio mon, you can imagine how much harder they might be in places like syria, a country that was torn to pieces by conflict, even before the earthquake with agency saying more than 4000000 people with surviving on aid before the earthquake struck, for many people in the rebel held north of the country have been saying, they feel abandoned by the world. we followed the story of one man in italy was one and i'm here to watch. you remember? she'll still book the memories here. i see my sister's rest, her son's clothes, and all of them there smell is here. when they remove everything, i won't come back. i say, here's their car because they're water tank. a lot of the solar panels,
6:27 pm
memories, the good all this was the shop. sort of the whole world lead the searing people down. this is struction was in europe or any other foreign country. the whole world would have gathered here to rescue those killed rather. but here no one care where displace football. no one ask about no and we were bomb barrel bombs were dropped but no one cared about us were playing on fit. i didn't know we're getting nothing from turkey and not from the government side. you know, we hear besieged for a cutter, aid convoy, consisting of 7 trucks, has crossed into syria. that of good news for people waiting for a that the convoy was organized by charity. it says the immediate focus is on providing aid, but it will transition to rebuilding houses. university schools in the quake hit
6:28 pm
areas. a letter i spoke to one syrian refugee here in turkey, about how the earthquakes as well as the war and syria was impacting his life. but what came to to kia because of the war in syria? we moved here in 22 off with my family and then you've come here and now you've suffered an earthquake. did you lose anyone in this earthquake from legit taylor who will help them to think? no immediate family but i lost many friends and distant relatives into disaster. i came here to offer my support and help at nightfall. here the rescue is, as you can see behind me, that's still trying to scramble through the rubble trying to reach people we believe, attract in that building their relatives around here. camp town, hoping there's still alive, but it's not only the rescue. her scrambling. scientists are scrambling to
6:29 pm
understand what exactly happened to that earthquake, what lessons can be holland baker explains. the tectonic plate under trickier is in constant motion. its faults are mat, but they're deep underground and it's not known where they might rupture next. so right now, earthquake scientists are examining for new data sources to model what happened. satellites provide optical images and gps, while radar scans show how the ground buckled up and down. these started to arrive 3 days after the disaster. the 1st real quick ruptured along a 300 kilometers stretch of the east anatoly and fault, sliding the ground, 5 to 6 meters to the left. in some areas, the 2nd was most likely triggered hours after the 1st one because of the transferred stresses. it traced more than 100 kilometers along a separate fault, sliding 7 to 8 meters in some places. this loads elastically, all a,
6:30 pm
all the material around it. so here you have a very large, very large displacement and therefore there's a lot of stress concentrations, particularly at the end. so before, but also it's a slightly more complex pattern. so there is this what we call a source model. it's your default slip along the fault and with that, which is very, very important to try to estimate relatively quickly to be able to calculate the stress changes in the region on the ground. teams of scientists from institutions in turkey are tracking the cracks above the faults called fishers to understand how the ground slid and ruptured. what we do is to look for trace of the 4th, as you see, just behind me. so it was her face. and we met them, so we are trying to figure out which met reach fault. and how long did it
6:31 pm
ruptured? these tremors have affected the surrounding faults. the question now is where this might happen next. so all of this data is going into earthquake source models. they can't forecast when an earthquake will happen, but they can show where one is overdue. there's a lot of people camped out here. we're going to show you that in a minute with the, with the drone. but before we get there, we have to talk about their needs. now help is arriving here. the government is put up tense that they just brought in some food as we were going to wear. but this, this simple needs for sanitation, for toilets full, for other things that people on. now mobilizing that aid and that helped themselves own coordination with government agencies. it's a really interesting story. we've got kayane for than with us here. he is one of the people that is in a joint effort with the government to provide food for people. i'm going to ask him now and attend to him. welcome him to the show. chalk, my moon, all them. candy 7,

6:35 pm
what's the biggest problem that you're facing now? he said, you know, food is arise, the tensor here, but i need to take a shower. and when that happens, i have to drive members of the family, 3 hours, just to take a shower. it's a very challenging situation and no doubt the search and rescue operations while that windows gonna close. and those operations are going to be shut down. but this, the needs of these people are going to continue to offer a serious challenge for authorities to try and grapple with. will continue to bring you coverage as the situation develops here. but for now, i'm gonna hand you back to the rain with the rest of the days news. sammy, thank you so much for that reporting from cherokee or it is almost 35 minutes past the hour right here in our 0 here is a reminder of the top developments surrounding the earthquakes, inter kia and syrian, as sammy was saying, more than 37000 people have now been declared dead one week after 2 powerful

earthquake struck the death toll is likely to be significantly higher. but there are still moments of hope and rescue. operations are still underway. a 12 year old boy was just pulled from the rubble alive in the last hour, inter key as high province after being trapped for a week and a cut hurry. a convoy of 7 trucks has crossed into northwest syria from turkey in the u. n. is calling for more border crossings into syria to be opened to lead in humanitarian supplies. other news now and thousands in israel or rally against prime minister benjamin netanyahu proposals to reform the judicial system. the demonstrators have gathered outside the connected in west jerusalem parliamentary and start discussing the proposed filled fee changes would limit the power of the supreme court while giving greater powers to the government

6:38 pm
so any of things, but we've also heard from the president himself i'm saying needs to be discussed with bearing in mind public. i mean, it is around the israeli cabinet, meanwhile, has recognized 9 illegal settler outposts in the occupied westbank despite past us opposition. so the far right finance minister said that $10000.00 housing units could be built in separate existing, illegal settlements. the palestinian authority is calling it an open war against the palestinian people or an al jazeera camera man has been injured by rubber bullets. fired by is really forces were and selling my was covering the demolition of palestinian homes and occupied east jerusalem is really soldiers also use tear gas against people who were protesting against the demolition and miserable and will come. but a neighborhood,

several palestinians were arrested and at least 30 were injured in south central chile, firefighters, from as far as 3000 kilometers away are being deployed to combat the worst forest fires. in decades, nearly 300 fires remain active and new ones are appearing specially in the ad o'conny or region or land america. editor lucio newman. reports from got very you know yet another wildfire out of control. in the al kenny, a region firefighters call for more help, unable to contain this blaze, when of hundreds of active fires that have been spreading throughout south central chile since late january. ah, the commander of the fire fighting brigade tells his men to evacuate, owed some equipment, griffith, the situation here is very complex. the fire is advancing very fast. so we're withdrawing to a safer area. well, we review another strategy. this helicopter is trying to dows water on the flames

here, but it barely as you can see, it's just simply not enough to deal with the magnitude of this fire here on this mountain or hill, like the fire the way over on to the other side. and there are only about a half a dozen firefighter here right now that the smoke is it is, it is really i impossible to breathe here. weeks of intense heat and strong winds, compounded by years of drought or feeding the flames. but that's not all right, with missing ok can, can be 30 percent. i think up which are the neighbors said they saw 3 people with bella carvers who started the fire back there. and other neighbors say they saw a green car and a pickup truck starting fires while they tried to put out the fires in one area, they saw how the people in cars let others all over the place that i live. i love
