1:00 pm
ah, russia's war in ukraine has dominated, well, he's for the past 12 months. devastating for those in the line of fire or directly impacted. it has strengthened global alliances and deepens, divisions with far reaching effects on the lives of millions of people. well, white in a week could special coverage. al jazeera explores every aspect of the conflict, the human, the political, and the economic, and the possibilities of resolution. ukraine war, one here on, on algebra. ah
1:01 pm
ah lou, this is in use our own al jazeera, fully back to go live in doha, coming up in the next 60 minutes. the u. n. is to boost a deliveries to northwestern syria where millions are struggling to survive after last week's earthquakes. among the rubble moments of joy, 2 brothers are pulled from under the ruins in turkey. also this hour the devastation has just. oh, just make sure it makes you wanna cry. as state of emergencies declared in new zealand after psycho and gabrielle causes flooding and destruction in the north island. stirring thing, tre. d. ron's resident, arising b, g for a 3 day state visits and ends on the champions league. returns with paris samar taking on by munich in the last 60
1:02 pm
ah, thank you very much for joining us. the united nations planned to increase a deliveries to syria after getting permission to use 2 more border crossings from turkey, truckloads of supplies have slowly been making their way into opposition held areas . they are carrying blankets, 10 cent food. however, the u. n. is not deploying heavy lifting equipment nor search and rescue teams in government controlled areas. brains have been landing with humanitarian relief, more than 37000 people have died in syria, enter kia after last week's earthquakes. most of those killed in syria where in rebels held areas where we have a team of correspondence covering the disaster across to a kia and inside syria as go live t, as in a harder who's in deer is one of the hardest hit areas in syria. so say no more aid is going through opposition,
1:03 pm
controlled areas in syria with 2 more crossings. opening. tell us about how it's all going to work. well, there is desperation on the ground. we are in genders. one of the hardest hit areas in northern syria, in this town alone, more than 1100 people were killed. a whole neighbourhood now reduced to rubble. people here say that they've lost their family members neighbors in this house alone. if you remember that new born child, which was who was rescued still attached by the umbilical cord, she's now in hospital and she lost her whole family. so you have many stories like this here. but unlike in southern turkey are here in syria. you don't see the international rescue teams, you don't see an international aid effort to help other people on the ground. news of the opening of the 2 border crossings undoubtedly will help of the situation on
1:04 pm
the ground. so far, aid has been trickling in from the babel, how a crossing. now the syrian government says it's going to allow aid to enter from 2 other crossings from turkey and the international, the community. the united nations are hoping that to their initial response, which really has been criticized, was inadequate. will step up. but people here are angry because they're saying why does united nations or the world have to wait for an approval from the syrian president, bashar latha? does you know people here do not consider him a legitimate leader, but a brutal dictator who killed tens of thousands, if not hundreds of thousands of people during the course of the war. they were hoping that the international community would just use those routes without his approval. and the fear here is that what but sharla thought is trying to do is gain political legitimacy by showing that he is still in charge. so you have that anger
1:05 pm
at the same time. you also have a lot of frustration. people here feel that they were abandoned by the international, by the international community. xena. tell us more about what you've seen, what you've witnessed since arriving inside siri. well, poverty, poverty, years of war displacement camps really scars of war. that's still not that haven't been healed before the earthquake. people were struggling to survive after the earthquake. they're still struggling to survive. this is really a forgotten part or a forgotten corner of syria. people find it difficult to, to work, to, to make ends meet. and at the same time, if you look behind me, there's no rescue and search operations ended on day 5, rescuers had no other choice. they said that we lost countless of lives because we
1:06 pm
kept on appealing for heavy machinery that never came yet across the border in southern tokyo up there today, they 9 missing survivors are still being found alive and being pulled from the ruins. so people here feel frustrated, but it's not new ever since we've been covering this conflict then and visiting these areas. we've heard this time and time again. those in the opposition feel that the world really never stood by their side and their greatest fear today is that they, they believe the syrian president is capitalizing on this earthquake engaging with united nations, which actually operates and government controlled areas. and here you don't, you don't see any international aid aid workers on the ground. i was going to ask you a frustration. yeah, i was going to ask you xena about the situation in those government controlled areas about the broader rescue efforts across syria.
1:07 pm
whoa, yes. since the aftermath of that earthquake earthquakes, a number of areas interior were affected among them. aleppo led to e. how my areas under the control of the government. many people lost their lives too. and there were hundreds of collapsed buildings as well in those areas. but immediately in the aftermath of the earthquake, we saw a plains landing of damascus airport, the level airport from, from a number of countries, even though the syrian government was blaming what they're calling western sanctions for preventing aid from landing. but aid was landing and we have to remember the united nations. it's different agencies do an h c r unit there for w h o. they all have offices in government controlled areas including the international committee of the red cross. so immediately what we saw were pictures emerging from government areas where people were giving handouts, food, shelter, and that we did not see in a, in the northwest corner of syria. so the,
1:08 pm
the hope here is that the international aid efforts will step up. i mean, the united nations even acknowledged that they failed the syrian people that the they had of the u. n. a chief, that is what he said. but i can tell you people here. i believe those are just empty, empty words. xena. thank you very much for bringing us the latest there from gene dearest, which is one of the hardest hit areas inside syria. now, as you heard, the united nation has been under intense pressure to get more aid into syria's rebel house northwest. it says 58 tramps have crossed from turkey through the battle, our crossing during the past week, but it will start sending others now that he has permission from serious guffman to the syrian regime. she used the babel salam and a ride border crossings. the announcements of the decision by prism up to the all the extra points from the general question
1:09 pm
was welcome. now to closely roll urged the to move quickly, you know, decision, but to get charts. been what this process going to be. what we'll do is to volley ball supplies that we will be able use in small. all right, sir. while we can now speak to sarah cassim, who joins us from sally, my dad in northwestern syria. she is a journalist, citizen journalist there. thank you very much for speaking to us. can you tell us 1st 8 days on how much 8 has your area received? how much help have you gotten really on in the senior center that didn't know the numbers of tracks and had from her from the you and not exceed 15 tracks from you. and i didn't know people here why elements on the other,
1:10 pm
the relation coding for, for the international community, for the you and former aide to enter a after these days off to be witnessed after? well, the field, because of, of the destruction here because of the last of so because of the couldn't save as much as many people as possible. now they are depressed and they are bonded by the you and the needs. i imagine a huge what are the most urgent one right now, and can you tell us specifically what has come in if you can didn't know the need to. so it's natural that everything is larger than the abilities here in the kids and to no, no equipment, no medical, no because and to support or to help defense coating for international aids to the student from the early beginning from the 1st
1:11 pm
moment of the week. what into, from devon, how a border from the us side is a kind of a track who did not exceed 15 tracks. these tracks were planning to enter. not did you even before this week. so it's not one of the week. you know what, what sort of aide was in those trucks? where did people receive the best best guess, maybe or some kind of blankets and the basic necessities, well, it's not related for a week. it's not, it's not an equipment. it's not related to any kind of vehicle where the civil defense members were in a great need for such kind of support. you talked about the civil defense members that the white helmet says they called. where does the search and rescue operations stand in northwest in syria? is it still ongoing?
1:12 pm
is there any hope of finding more people alive? yeah, yes till this moment. and the civic center members working in this is was a novice cd and so they are looking to see to make sure that was still the victims, whether they are dead or alive, maybe up to 180 hours after the quick. so they could find people who are still alive under the said under the strike, everything but after the final 2 week now they are trying to make sure whether these things the victims will because they cannot give the total number of people who or who are missing and national, but i found that we're doing fine. thank you so much for taking the time to speak to. our casino is a citizen, janice, joining us there from san mother in northwest syria. now some international aid has
1:13 pm
already arrived in northwest in syria. al jazeera israel, so sedar reports from the town of murat mystery. this rebel held areas were heavily formed by the regime throughout the 12 year long sea with war. last week's earthquake has made things worse, killing thousands, an injury, and many more. on the radar sally, the head of the syrians, civil defense forces, also known as white helmets, says the global responds to the disaster has been to a little while i had a thought. so i am bad. i've had the most difficult 7 days of my life. we've been forgotten for years and the world didn't hear us. if the world had heard our voice . we wouldn't have lost these souls in marta to be seen in italy province where the earthquake hit, the hardest aid is desperately needed. but not rosner. we've been displaced several times in the last 9 years. we don't know what is ahead of us that this earthquake displaced us again when we lost our homes and families, but we need shelter. the country 8 conway has brought pants. diapers, heaters,
1:14 pm
gas cylinders, blankets, food and medical keys, toyota and what we've been ordered by the emir of guitar to keep the aid supply line open to the syrians. we now see that the syrian people need our support, especially in this current crisis. that pains now doubled, and the international community needs to step up its support. in north syria hospitals over the lack modern recruitment men, survivors died on the way to hospitals, or soon after arrival. as of this region is home to more than 4000000 people of life here was already tough and the earthquake has just added to their misery. and vessel is now back across the border in turkey joins as from the city of idea. man in a south east take here, aristo land, a sand. you're in, one of the hardest hit areas in tech here bring us up to speed with certain rescue operations or any hope of finding more survivors. 8 days on while in
1:15 pm
this history has been hit hardest ah, by the, by the earthquake. so there are 3 cities particularly damaged and almost the city centers are destroyed, carmen mirage, hearty and are d m a. so we are in a d. m a now and the rescue. air force are still continuing in here. however, this is the is having some good news as well. just in the morning after 198 hours under the rubble, an 18 years old. young man, them was a chip in javert. he has been pulled out of the rubble and he was alive, was a moment of celebration here by his family and the rescue teams as well. and also right over there, where you can see the ambulances, while we're preparing for this live. if you have heard that the, the rescue teams have been calling the ambulance is quite an excitement here. because they said that they have detected a voice. come in from the on,
1:16 pm
from under the rebels here, and now the rescue teams are working relentlessly. begin to below and hopefully to take him or her as well. we do not know the identity of the person on there, but it be as dis, robles, however, the air force is still on the way. and if that happens, it's going to be regarded as a miracle because as of now we have already hold on 200 hours since the earthquake has hid the sultan or to care over there. this could be of course cover has been a symbol of this city. you can see that the clock now doesn't work. it just stopped when the earthquake hid this city over a week ago, at 417 a. yeah. in the morning. and people say that since that time on the time the life stopped in this city and also over there, you can see another block that is completely level down. still the heavy lifting machinery is the diggers desk waiters and the rescue workers are still working. i
1:17 pm
do not know whether the, whether there are any one that there is anyone that is alive still under that. however, the 4th are still there on the way. so this city i have just talked to the deputy mayor of the city a little ago. and he told me that so far, they have buried around 8000 people in this city. and he said that the concern is that probably is going to be a bo higher than $10000.00 adults. he has talk about some of the religious bed, only 3 days for these later, they managed to have access, and they said that a military helicopter only co, only cooled, managed to have an excess, and a village was completely completely level down. no one came alive and said him more tragically, the walls come down came down to the, to the village and the dead bodies has been eaten. men of the desert bodies has been eaten there as well. so people also here are complain about the lack of
1:18 pm
coordination. they said particular for the 1st 3 days. we didn't have as creators, like of course, the mission known, biggers, no live, not heavy, left the machine or is if they had this more than the group must probably this, it will, could save much more saltier. thank you for that way. so st. are at 14, they're live from and yemen in turkey. and as we sold mentioned, they are still stories of survival and help in turkey for people have been rescued after being trapped under the rabble for a 198 hours. 2 of them were brothers. have been taken to hospital for aging treatment as check in now with stephanie decker, who is in camera sh, which was the epi center of the 2nd earthquake last week. stephanie, as we've heard the extraordinary tales of survival and miracles. 8 days after the earthquake struck, tell us about what's happening, where you are with the rescue efforts. the yes, there's moments of joy, unfortunately, the folly
1:19 pm
a very short lived and very brief. the overwhelming reality is that it is the dads that are being brought out of the rubble. we've just had one body of a bad out of where the work is going on. you could probably see the operation going on pretty much your recovery operation. 22 bodies we understand remain. you do still have some hope and you can probably see those in blue. these are a chinese listening team. they keep going in and out with our equipment. so they keep trying to listen. that when the bulldozers now you see about 4 or 5 of them starting to move again, they go silent to try and listen. we had 2 french search and rescue team also come in earlier. they were looking, they'd had a call saying that someone said they heard a voice from around this area. they then entered the area. so there is still this sort of, i suppose, hope 8 days later because these specialized international teams are the ones that have the listening equipment that have the, the rescue dogs that identify life. this is something that we had show yesterday we
1:20 pm
were waiting for that to search and rescue when they did find those 2 young men in the end. but the overwhelming story here, folly is of death. we have seen countless bodies since we arrived here. and again, now they're expecting another one that they're trying to get out of the rubble. what they do. many times the bodies are not, you know, their pieces were told. it's horrible to tell you this, but this is the reality of what the relatives are having to deal with there. then put in body bags. there's a, there's a more car here. there's another more car there actually are camera on friday. just put the drone up and he said a, the devastation from up there is immense into he says you could see these more cars and locations. so yes, few moments of joy are incredible, but overwhelming as death. i was going to ask you about the relative, stephanie, you mentioned them. i know you've been speaking to, to some of the survivors to the people who lost loved ones. what have they been telling you about their experience?
1:21 pm
a lot of them obviously i don't want to talk on camera. there is a lot of i'm a comprehensible grief. here are the few that we have spoken to and i think this is what also makes the so tragic. people have lost entire families in one go. there was one woman who told me that she lost 4 cousins, all her nieces and nephews and her mother. there was another man who was waiting for 6 relatives in the building. so this is the reality that people have lost entire families. we were at the border with syria just a few days ago, and we counted at least 50 bodies of syrians that were being carried across the board to be buried at home. one man put both of his children, a 5 year old and a 12 year old. and he was in a daze and he said, look at them, they look as if they're asleep, a, it's very difficult to comprehend. doubt these people are feeling, they've lost everything. there was one man who said, i've lost 2 children waiting for one. i hope he gets pulled out alive because otherwise i don't have a reason to live any more. and again, that's, that's her,
1:22 pm
that's a heart break. and devastation that's being played out across the entire se, some areas more than others in terms of the devastation. but i think that death toll certainly expected to rise much more to give you a sense of the, the. 2 unbearable grief that is affecting, you know, hundreds of values of not over a 1000000 people. hot breaking stories. indeed, stephanie, thank you very much for that. stephanie decker live there in cut, a mom rush. now as our reporters have been mentioning, the government inter kia is accused of being slow to respond in hard hate areas. for morning. let's go to anchor at a capital west in m, cuz he was joining us from the crisis center there. the government is holding his for his cabinet meeting since the earthquakes in m. what can we expect? wholly answer. the last monday was the day sat for the cabinet meeting, but in the more early hours of the morning to kill woke up to this disaster
1:23 pm
earthquake air that had it's eastern ration. so to day after 9 days, there is the a cabinets meeting again. her here in the building where we are everything, everything is sealed because we are expecting turkish prison, bridge of tape are done and some of the cabinet members are to be here. the government has been respect, replying to the critics that they have been late in a relief response, or they're saying that i are the climate conditions. the winter conditions was one of the effects and they accept that there were a places that they weren't able to reach. however, the opposition and also even some supporters of the ruling act party continued to criticize them. however, add this fight, everything in this fight that turkey is preparing for a presidential election that will also like the members of the parliament amid in 2023 at for as, as the main opposition. we have reached out to refuse speaking on camera because they said for now we are not going to deliver in
1:24 pm
a political speeches. and the ruling act part to members. they are all in the field and they say we want to focus on our relief and 8 programs. but of course, today's cabinet meeting is very important as the earthquake is the main subject on the table, or we will be hearing air from turkish president after the meeting is complete, he will deliver a speech and we will hear more about the measures. the plans ahead for them or to take care of the region. a we spoke to some politicians are in ankara and we tried to explain to pull to class must fear her here in the capitol in our story. turkish flags have been raised up again in the capital ankara after a week of national mourning for the 10s of thousands of people killed by 2 major earthquakes in the southern region. opposition, party say, much of the distraction could have been avoided if the government had heated the warnings by experts of an impeding quake. this video is from last summer. it shows
1:25 pm
an opposition politician and carmen marsh. the epicenter of last week's earthquake urging the authorities to take will be cushions to minimize damage. you do hit them, listen. they're all pointed as of the opposition. the party has been visiting the quick affected region and is accusing the government of its late response. he says the damaged infrastructure, which cut access to some areas was also built by the current government would refer to when am lula. it is a disaster that after 20 years of governing as a single party, you haven't taken any necessary measures here. despite that, there was an earthquake 3 years ago. there's no excuse for move up seeking accountability is another thing, but it's a systemic issue. we'll solve this altogether though. we don't have time for reproach or descent. last week, turkish president, treasure tape ardon,
1:26 pm
inspected the ongoing rescue and relief efforts in all 10 cities affected by the quick. an acknowledged problems with the initial response is or took a qu. we're dealing with zach the with common sense and collect of wisdom bushels. all of our ministers, especially our president, have regular contact without teams in the field. we manage this process based on field feedback and consultations. this is a collaborative effort between our ministries and related organizations. all parties in the turkish parliament, including the governing up party, have mobilized their members to help the victims to the case for appearing for a presidential election. that is most likely the most difficult for president ridge of tape our john, who's been in power for more than 20 years last, monday's earthquakes will almost certainly have political ramifications for now what size appear to suspend that they are campaigns as they work to help millions who've been affected. seen amaco solo al jazeera on kyra.

1:36 pm
in fact, many of these people who've been arrested saturday, the number stands around 20. we don't have a full list yet. they haven't even been served with their charges. many of them have been abducted actually kidnapped from their homes. so this is a process that's happening outside the rule of law. and in many ways outside the realm of clear logic di it is likely to defend these arrests and abductions by saying that they're part of an anti corruption crackdown. that's really been the one card he seems to know how to play in chinese in politics. but in fact, many of the people arrested, as you mentioned, are in fact critics of sired who are people pro democracy, people who have nothing to do with corruption or criminal activity. like the head of chinese, your largest radio station, who was taken from his home late last night. why i was going to ask you to tell us more about the people who have been arrested and the link that unites them.
1:37 pm
sure. it's a mixture of people who are likely to be charged with price fixing and economic corruption. and people who have done nothing more than simply criticize kaya science dictatorship on facebook. in the, in the group of people whose arrest, abductions, have been nakedly political. we're seeing people being taken from their homes across the india. logical spectrum. someone like noted in the tar, the head of can use your most popular largest radio station was a he's a sexually oriented person who hates the so called islamist party and not us. the highest cited claims to oppose. there are other people who self identify a secular critic, psychiatrist. i had to like laws her after me, who was a member of the sexually oriented party new to tunis in the past 10 years. now. there was a man named high in turkey who had started to organize cross city, a logical opposition talk, bringing people of different,
