desperation and anger in syria age slowly trickles and while millions are struggling to survive off to last week's earthquakes, that that been miraculous rescues just across the board away, survivors is still being pulled from the rumble 8 days after a west disaster and takia is that mountain history. ah, hello, i'm marianna massey and london. you're watching al jazeera, also coming up on the program this hour. israel doubles down on his promise to legalize illegal settlements in the occupied westbank. after being criticized buying western powers, ukrainian troops bombarded by russian forces on the eastern front lines while nato considers giving fighter jets to cave. ah,

m dash o, we began with the major humanitarian aid operation in turkey and syria, where millions of people are in desperate need of essential supplies after 2 devastating of quakes last week. turkish present, rush of type odor once as the quakes were as big as atomic bombs. a un delegation as cross into a rebel held north western syria for the 1st time since the disaster. this after president bashar, like i said, the government open to more border crossings to allow aid in the u. n. says nearly 9000000 syrians have been affected by last week. quake truck loads of supplies have slowly been making their way into opposition held areas. meanwhile, in turkey, several people were rescued from the rubble on tuesday. 8 days after the quakes, hundreds of thousands of survivors are living intense. they've been enduring, freezing, sub 0 temperatures. the total death toll has now surpassed $41000.00. so
10:03 pm
we have a team of correspondence covering this story. stephanie deka is in tahoe mon, my rash or so cider is an idea man. natasha. her name is ann. hi, ty, province. we begin now with this report from dana harder she's been engender as in syria. there are no international rescue teams here. no international aid workers. the people of northwest syria have been left to deal with a disaster on their own. last week's earthquakes that struck southern turkey, devastated many areas in this country as well. their lives now a pile of dust, none available. we are a vegetable sellers, our shops, we're under new far homes. now we lost everything. we're sleeping in the streets. no one from the international community is helping us. jan. that is, was one of the towns and the opposition controlled enclave worse hit by the 2

quakes. it's the 9 of that disaster. rescuers who have been appealing for heavy equipment still haven't received any as they remove the remaining bodies and the rubble across the border in southern turkey are missing. survivors are still being found alive and pulled from the ruins. here in northwest syria, the search and rescue effort was called off on day 5 because a rescuer is didn't have the resources they say could have saved many lives. so far, the aid entering the opposition north is not enough for people's needs. the un says, syrian president, charla said, has now given approval to use more border crossings from turkey. a statement that has angered the opposition, the united nations seems to look at, but sharla sort of their secretary general. they're waiting for him to give the milky 9 days into a major earthquake. i don't know in the history of united masons that they had not responded to something. it's the hardest area in syria,
10:05 pm
in government controlled territories. planes loaded with to manage her, ian 8 have been arriving continuously. there also where united nations agencies are based in the north, the u. n. has acknowledged failing syria with an, an adequate response. it says that will change, but many here are doubtful. there will be any sustained international help, but no more. dod, welcome, we have no heaters. no blankets is nothing on just a tent over our heads or shops were destroyed. who will help us to rebuild our lives? the scars of 12 years of war have still not healed in a region where millions are displaced and poor. now, there is a new crisis for people whose sole purpose has long been to survive. zanna for their alger cedar northwest, syria. hassan. he turned his head of the syrian for him, an organization which has been providing aid inside northwest in syria. he joins us alive now from istanbul and you have just returned from the region. can you
10:06 pm
describe to us see what you encountered in a witness while you were there? thank you very much. let me 1st offer my sincere condolences to the people of turkey for the massive loss of life. and also for the syrian people, for also for their tragic losses as well. i have just returned from northern northwest syria, where i visited the 16 locations between towns, village your cities. so the situation is quite disheartening and it's a really a desperate situation as syria has been forgotten before before the the, the earthquake that the region on monday, february 6th at 4 15 am as since then continues to be
10:07 pm
forgotten. i have witnessed in these 316 locations, hundreds of buildings that have collapsed completely. i have seen people living in the street. i have seen bodies being extracted from under their uncles a scene that was very, very painful and very difficult to describe. most of these difficulties was in gender where not a single street that you walk through or drive through does not have it. buildings that have been completely destroy, actually the exception in the scene. if you see a building that still standing or up so i can go through a lot of a lot of details on, on what the seen as like,
10:08 pm
i've seen in the town of cool a town that was hit by the earthquake. it has about 16 buildings that were completely destroyed, but since it is near the last, the river down was also broken. so the town was also flooded. i was freezing cold, below 0 celsius. and i've seen people carrying their belongings from one spot to another. wading through a very, very cold water. almost a freezing temperature. water is the same as data. this was a country that had already been shattered by years of war in violence even before this disaster struck. can you, i suppose these before the earthquake? maybe they had some sort of made shift shelters,
10:09 pm
even if it was something that was very fragile and temporary in nature. the people that you met on during your travels in northwest area. what are they doing now? because and presumably there's no safe drinking water. no sanitation, no food, no shelter. heating, how they, how they surviving. before before monday, february 6th, at 3 am, syria was described. northwest syria has been described as the worst humanitarian crisis in the world. and then an hour later the earth wake it. so you're talking about misery upon misery. for people living in northwest 4500000 people, 2 thirds of them have been displaced. 2.1000000 children. they don't attend school . 66 percent are in the north, west syria. 90 percent of the syrian people are below the poverty line. all of this
10:10 pm
is before the earthquake and now come to the earthquake. so we're gonna, we're going to just let the imagination to but i'll tell you some stories. i have seen people standing as sitting on a rock at the, at the front of their collapse building. and when i walked by them and i greeted them and i asked them, who are you? and they give me their name. and then i tell them what do you live? i live here and they point at their house and i'll tell them how's your family? and they'll tell me my family is that the entire family is that i can tell you that i had this conversation at least 5 or 6 times. this is a common scene. people, people have these blank stares, people are trying to sift through their emotions. so this is, this is a very, very tough disaster and tough experience for people to go through. i myself, i'm starting to wonder what did the syrian people do to this international community
10:11 pm
that they are treating them like this. this is, this is life they after the earthquake and i can tell you, i have been there 7 days and i did not see a single evidence of coming through the country. and so what are people doing? what are people doing? they are trying to survive. they rely on organizations like us, they rely on the of the senior civil defense, the white helmets, to, to help them recover their, their, their, their loved ones that are trying to find a place where they can be warm. and they're trying to find a place where they can that be protected from the harsh weather for what they are doing. they're just simply trying to find a way to protect their children. it is a very miserable situation, and i'm, i'm not sure if there are words that i could use to describe what the serious
10:12 pm
people are doing through. but i'll tell you what they're doing. something that makes me very proud and that is they're sticking with each other that helping each other with little that they have. i have seen examples of, of those and of camaraderie of see a scene of see the best examples of humanity when, when i visited people side, syria and i have visited during this trip, hundreds of people that i've met through. i've talked to them in groups. i've talked to them individually, and i've seen, i've seen people that there are a zillion and they wanted to survive the situation. but it is a great deal, as you say, a great deal of generosity even in time, such as these under a very, a different response. certainly in terms of the international, i believe zation effort effort in syria compared to turkey with people being letter to fend for themselves and, and relying very much from smaller organizations like yours. but 10. pepsi can continue our conversation. another time. thank you very much. my son he to for now for joining us there. thank you. meanwhile, across the board of the number of people being found alive is getting smaller by
10:13 pm
the day. despite the odds, there are still some incredible stories of survival on tuesday to women will pull from under the debris and hearty province. 8 days after the quakes. earlier, 2 brothers will also found alive, but to rescue efforts are starting to slow down the window to find survivors is fading. stephanie decker brings us more now from carmen marsh, the api center of the 2nd wake. the vast majority of dead bodies that are being pulled out of the rubble. we saw 2 at a site just behind. we spoke to the driver of the more car you see the everywhere. he said that he's been driving the bodies back to their families, back to where they want to bury them, and that this is part of his duty. very, very difficult. also tension here. we saw one area just a little bit north of here. the chinese rescue team was there, they listen. i'm tension ensued between it could have been a relative and some of the, the workers. there was a fight, a physical fight,
10:14 pm
so much as the army had to fire in the air. which is the 1st time that we've seen that from our travels across this devastated region. but it shows you just tell us how high the tensions are. this is going to be a major challenge. they're going to have to clear the rubble, the buildings that remain standing are certainly not fit. none of the residents will be able to return. so it is a long term challenges as a heartbreaking challenge. and it's going to be very, very difficult one to manage. certainly for talking over a 1000000 people that are meeting long term housing. well, target for worship type one is defended, his decision making after his government was accused of being too slow to respond to the hardest areas. some because y'all glue has more from ankara government or was late in response and in reaching out to some city is i because of the weather conditions and the roads or the infrastructure damaged infrastructure. they have
10:15 pm
been hard, harshly criticized, but they, they acknowledges and prisons. ardon mentioned last week that ad there might have been some mistakes and the officials we have been speaking to have been telling us the same thing. but after reaching on the ground, we have mobilize all our resources, all state sources are. he said, he repeated that again. and as he mentioned that the impact of this disaster of this damage air was much bigger than its real scale. him. he tried to convince a people that he will be doing his best to accommodate pupil and a to rehabilitate the earthquake had areas. and he mentioned that in one week the risk assessment of the damage buildings will be a will be complete. and after that, they will be destroy it. they will be destroying the collapse buildings our foreign ministers from the united states, germany, france, italy, and the you gave issued a joint statement condemning israeli settlement activity is,
10:16 pm
comes after israel's government decided to authorize 9 illegal outposts in the occupied west bank 5 countries a they are strongly opposed to such unilateral actions, which they say will exacerbate tensions between israel and palestine. i'm hoodie as a senior fellow at the harvard kennedy school and says israel will not be intimidated by western condemnation. you got 2 things going on here. you got the big western power, it's really coming to the crunch of the question that they've never addressed for the last 3040 years. which is, are they serious about implementing international law equally for palestinians and israelis? are they just going to issue statements when the israel is there something illegal or criminal, but they take strong actually the palestinians do something. the other one is for these really, really is implementing this policy of taking on from the palestinians of settling it's colonizing it with their own people,
10:17 pm
mostly coming from brooklyn and poland and other places and, and they and russia and they have done this for since like the 27th, they've been taken post on the law. so these are historical trends that are really at a moment of reckoning. now, we'll have to see if we're talking about the law and then we'll talk to get a better action response from the west. west has acted on, you know, they've been ignoring the state motion fact they've been spitting in the face of the americans often literally when an american president or secretary of state visits israel, the same day they authorize a new settlement. this has been their pattern over the last 2030 years. they don't really care because they're never subjected to real sanctions or accountability. and we don't know what's going to happen. i wouldn't be surprised that the americans of your pins realized that this is going to create a catastrophe, keeps going on. that they might say, well, you know, maybe we should love the international court of justice or the international
10:18 pm
criminal court investigate. there's some help us see what's to be done. signals like that might cause the israelis to react. but up until now the signals have not been made by the west to hope comfortable any wrong or in the region, especially in israel. and the israelis have never suffered penny pressure. therefore they keep doing what they're doing with out is there a life? i'm not much more filter, bring you off to break, including this story, thousands of men, iraq in a crackdown on child marriages in india. ah hello there, there's lots of lovely weather to be found across europe at the moment ticking across western and central areas. we got high pressure in charge, keeping things dry and warm with temperature sitting well above the average for the likes of paris. and that trend continues as we had for the east. we are going to
10:19 pm
see some rain. however, move in bits and pieces of wintry and wet weather at the edges of this high pressure. and that bound of rain is likely to move across from the island of island and britain still from sunny spells for the south east of england on wednesday on thursday. however, that changes as that rain pushes its way across the channel into the low countries . and parts of france is while a wintry blast for norway from that front. but as we edge further east, that snow is set to skirt its way further. he's leaving behind pierce skies. certainly for the south this we can find that in the czech republic, look at the temperature in prague. we have a look at the 3 dates on the up on thursday. well above the average before some light rain comes in on friday. now the rain is set to dry up the southern areas of portugal as we move further south wednesday into thursday. things are looking much clearer across large areas of spain and portugal to some of the story for italy as well as greece, but it remains rather cold for eastern areas of takia. ah
