ah, we begin this news out in the united states where stock market turmoil is continuing. in the wake of the collapse of to tech focused american bags. would trust and the financial sector shake and american bank she has tumbled on wednesday . that sent the dow jones index down more than $600.00 points or almost 2 percent. a swiss lender credit suisse for the heaviest losses that she has plummeted by 30 percent to an all time low. this was government is reported to be under pressure to intervene. and the anees has spooked oil markets. crude prices have slapped to their lowest and more than a year. the main u. s. benchmark. west texas intermediate crude fell 7 percent on wednesday that spring and corresponding kristen salumi now. she's joining us from wall street in new york. credit suisse has had some problems for
9:03 pm
a while now. questions and what is it that made it share value? tumble so much on wednesday. yeah, that's right. they were either having some issues earlier in the week. they admitted that they had some material weaknesses in their reporting. processes and the last couple of years, but it was news that their largest supporter, their largest investor, the saudi national bank, wasn't going to put up any more money to help shore up their finances. that's what got investors very, very nervous. we saw the stocks plunge in european markets and they've been doing the same thing here on the stock exchange behind me in new york as well. and that has re ignited concerns over the banking sector more broadly. here in the united states, after over the weekend, the government had to stop in to protect depositors at 2 banks. that fell due to
9:04 pm
a lack of liquidity in their financial situation. and so we're seeing the markets broadly here reflect these concerns commodities prices. as you mentioned are also down. treasury yields are down because investors are pouring a lot of money into treasuries, which are seen as a safer bet when things are uncertain. and as far as those banking stocks go, it was regional bags that were closed over the weekend. and bailed out, those were the areas of most concerns and those are the areas where we're seeing the most losses again at today in the market place of 1st republic, one bank that was rumored to have problems similar to silicon valley bank i showed steve declines today after recovering somewhat on tuesday, tuesday market seemed a bit more settled about the banking situation. and now everything is going down
9:05 pm
again. regional banks like 1st republic, but also the big bags like city bank chase. wells fargo also seeing their stock's decline anywhere from 4 to 5 percent as investors looked for a more solid footing and express their nerves. we've had the chair of the securities and exchange commission which overseas the markets here in the united states attempting to calm investors, saying that they're on top of that they're investigating and that charges will follow for any banks that acted inappropriately. kristen, thank you very much for that. that is kristin salumi with the latest live for us on wall street. well, let's get more on this. we're joined now by william lee. he's chief economist and the milken institute, and full a managing director of north america economics. the city group and he's joining us from henderson in nevada. thank you very much for your time this evening. i'm is credit suisse is biggest back a saudi national bank, runing out further assistance to the bank because of limits on how much money it
9:06 pm
can give the bank or because of big problems at credit suisse. well, the, the world is now and in a frenzy concerning about a credit crunch that might affect the global recovery because the saudis had against the world that they think that crow sweets may have more troubles then. then was 1st surmise, even though as a reporter said, christmas has been in trouble for a number of years, or no one knew the extent to which the troubles are and the saudi decision. just put a real emphasis on investors having to investigate the soundness of the large global banks. now in the united states, most the call banks are in fact very secure because they've been stress tested and reformed since the financial crisis had put them under a tremendous amount of scrutiny. and what we had, that was a failure was the smaller banks, the specialized banks, like the silicon valley bank because it specialize in a particular part of the economy. but overall, investors today are very concerned because the saudi decision pointed out that
9:07 pm
there are potential financial weaknesses throughout the financial system. and what are the weaknesses at credit suisse in particular, it has faced a string of scandals in recent years. hasn't it? well, the scandals are, are, are really assigned that management is not where it should be. and i think that's the 1st thing that anyone looks at is that say, what does this institution have? good management can we rely on that to take care of our money? if that can't be a resounding yes, that every one is going to doubt everything else about the bank. in the case of a, of the silicon valley bank, there was no risk manager or for the last several months, there's been no one in that position to manage the risk. and what did you, what did we find out? in fact, the, the silicon valley asset liability mismatches were the main cause for white, is that the depositors became very nervous and started taking out their money. or in the case of the credit suisse, we have a larger set of problems, not only with risk management, but also with their loan book. and the way they are doing business is just wasn't
9:08 pm
profitable. and the, the, there's no confidence in the management of credit suisse. silicon valley bank as a medium sized american bank. credit suisse is a very large, even peon bank. you're pointing out that neither of them have had very good management. does this extend to the wider banking sector? well, i haven't been a managing director at citibank, i must say the management there since the financial crisis has been obsessed with making sure that their business model is intact and restoring confidence in the world that and that's true of all the large global banks. and in the case, the amount of states, half the bank assets are in the top 5 banks, they're very concentrated now. you're right that the bank management of down the line in the smaller banks and the crypto bank that did fail our suspect. and i think that's where investors are making their, their, their, their decision. which to say, we are now reassessing our commitment to these smaller banks where we are not sure
9:09 pm
about the management. and we're going to be probing for weaknesses. and that's why you see so much of the share price is going down right now, because many of the of the investors are just set to say, i'm fed up, i will wait it out. and i'm not gonna be part of this institution anymore. and they're shorting the stock, sort of the selling the stocks and the pulling out deposits. when you say that a lot of bank assets are with the top 5 banks in the u. s. is bet concerning. well, it in a way, banking is a, is a industry where there are tremendous economies of scale. the larger or bank is the more effective it is and inter mediating and spreading its risks across a wide range of businesses. in the case of se of silicon valley bank where they focus on financing the tech industry. as soon as there's a downturn in tech, or in the case of a silverado are so over the other, the other banks that fail the, the, they were concentrated the crypto industry. so when you have industrial concentration, that's one of the sure signs that, that there could be
9:10 pm
a lot of obama or abilities there. but when you have a diversified set of businesses, the way the, the top global banks have, i think the, the, the regulators are much more reassured, especially through the stress testing that they are safer. mr. lee, it's great to get your expertise on this. thank you very much from your time for your time. that's william li, live for as a nevada. thank you. by moving on to other news now and israel's military. he says it's sad shot dead, a person with explosives on monday as well as the man had possible links to has bala that's been in our correspondence. iran con, he's joining us live from occupied east jerusalem. and what else is the, the israeli military saying about the summer? well, there was actually a gag order on reporting this from the israeli government incident actually took place on monday. the israeli army say at the beginning of the week an explosive device to set off near the edo junction which an israeli system was seriously
9:11 pm
injured. the security forces worked to locate the suspects and now during searches they set up road blocks, et cetera. a vehicle was stopped, there was an incident that took place there and these ready army killed a man and they also found a more explosives on him. they also found weapons on him. they were suggesting that there might be another terrorist attack or another attack that he was going to be doing. now, this is a very serious incident for the israelis, the border between israel and lebanon is by no means impenetrable. but our incidents like this are incredibly rare. so what these really ami are now looking into is the fact that this man might be linked to his vala. they said there is a, a preliminary investigation going on that the man may have been working for that. lebanese group, however, is already politicians are already blaming, has been the for this attack his bullet, for that part i haven't actually reacted yet. but this is an incredibly serious and
9:12 pm
slipped the last few days they've been meeting at this curio cabinet. has been meeting they've been talking about things that are concerning for them are such as what type of explosive was being used. so that's an indication of how serious is it another indication of how serious this it is. a fact that prime minister benjamin netanyahu was in berlin for an official visit that was supposed to last until friday. and what happened is he's now coming back on thursday. we've likely to be talking about this incident in the days to come and country very much for that. that is and long con, with a native my fries in occupied east jerusalem. thank you. malawi has declared 2 weeks of morning after tropical cyclone fatty devastated parts of the country. more than 200 people have been killed and thousands just plagued the storm, has mostly subsided, but aid work said situation on the ground. a still dia, tens of thousands of people have been displaced by flooding and man slides from the

at least to some extent, though, that flooding in those mud slides. but all those homes are damaged. people haven't been able to stay in their homes. you've seen people try and recover whatever they can. and at the same time, looking for those who are missing, some people have relocated to a school on the higher ground, and that is the best they can do at this point. what it is, just a game of wait and see, especially as they wait for some sort of response from the government. and that's the biggest complaint, little has been done to assist them. the government has said, at least 550 people are missing across this region, including was in beacon, malawi, at least half a 1000000 people have been affected and their tens of thousands displaced. this is really the difficulty that governments in this region are facing the ongoing rain here alone. it's rain for 6 days already. it's forecast that rate will continue for
9:15 pm
at least another 10 days. and it seems an inability to access some of these areas and a lack of capacity when it comes to rescue efforts. at least 13 people have been killed out of flash floods het takia, southeastern region. heavy rain since tuesday night inundate of the cities of shangdorf are an ali him on. the flooding happened as the region is trying to recover from last once devastating earthquakes. leslie said, thy reports from a stand bowl. ah, these men had a fortunate escape. police rescue workers and civilians helping, helping to save doors surrounded by fellows. he saw them to to hear several people have died. in many areas, the emergency services were overwhelmed. you see this area is completely submerged . all thirties couldn't set up pumps to discharge the water. here they call stranded here, but they couldn't find pumps to discharge the water up. the flesh flows or heating

zone which called the 8 s. and then we have, you know, territorial law, territorial waters. but no, you can't do that. the american playing was over the black sea, which we've been doing for quite a while, and basically to monitor the situation in ukraine. and so the level of comments follow the russian ambassador to washington saying, what would the us do if a russian surveillance drawing was flying close to us shores? what do you make of that? does he have a point? well, basically as long as they're into national waters, we don't do anything. sometimes we send out plain shot to shadow them, but no, as long as you're, if you're not in what we call the 8 is eyes to be enabled. white auction, i used to go through this all the time with the russians because we would be in the sea of japan as long as you're in international waters, you can do that as long as you would like. i mean, on the international law now,
9:33 pm
whether countries will let you do that is a different thing. what the fact of the matter is we do what they do with and basically we don't let these things turn into incidence like yesterday where the russians call to cause damage should their planes, you know, why hitting and hitting the american drone and the secretary of state antony blank and has said that then i'll go on to investigate this incident. how successful do you think and investigation involving an incident and incident where 2 countries involved rather can be if only one of the countries is investigating? well, basically the states will make public what they find and i assume they'll find that the drop, the, the m q, ny, was basically in international waters. and that were russia did was a violation of the international norm now will have any consequences or russia?
9:34 pm
no, they don't pay any attention to international standards. look at the war crimes they're committing and ukraine and mr. cope. i just want to bring our viewers attention to the defense secretary, lloyd austin. he's holding a press conference at the moment and he's talking about how russian defense aircraft must operate in a safe manner. we've also heard that the russian and the us defense ministers have spoken on the phone just in the last hour. how do you think that they will overcome this difference of opinion on who can fly close to this was own? well basically i think it's good that they are talking because it could have been that the pilot, the russian pilot was told to go up and show the americans that we see what they are doing. and to prevent them from continuing, you know, into russian airspace. and i think what happened,
9:35 pm
you had an incompetent pilot who got too close to the drone and then hit it. he caught a board his plane down here in terms of what happened after he hit the drone with his his own play lawrence called senior fellow at the center for american progress . joining us live from washington, d. c. there. thank you. as always for your time mr. colby, appreciate, thank you very much for having me take care. staying in the u. s. and president joe biden has issued an executive order, tightening background checks on firearms. the aim to reduce gun violence. biden made the announcement in los angeles saba, which was the scene of a shooting 2 months ago. john hendern reports from monterey park in california in a change still morning, a recent mass shooting president joe biden offered what little he could for new gun control. the president issued an executive order he can enact alone with limited
