a 1000000000 muslims around the world to observe the holy month. it's time for spiritual discipline, reflection, community, and social awareness. increasingly environmentalists also see it as an opportunity to reflect on and practice sustainability. so today we ask, how can ramadan be more sustainable? the 1st, let's hear from the sharpie, co founder, the arab youth climate movement. and dr. i think given this lemon world and the region which is the most one that climate change, we need to use this as a time to self reflect our way of living the consumers and problem, the food vase problem, etc. i think my mother gives a great opportunity to me leaving a friendly family band to stay together. collectivistic admitted to work towards climate issues that are many community lever. and this can be done to greatest initiatives to our community at your family and at your gathering 6 cetera.
10:35 pm
joining us to discuss from washington d. c. corey machine, a faith based activist and founder of green ramadan in cambridge, england, a monster job mystique from the cambridge sent charl mosque and with us from darmstadt, germany, abdul, olim malik. international marketing manager for green, if tart. oh yeah. hey, one more seat at this table that you, if you're watching this on youtube, see the box over there. we've got a live producer waiting to get your comments to me so i can get him to our guess. so let's do this together, right. all right, let's set this up a mumps, a job. we you, for our non muslim audience set up ramadan, i'm sure they're familiar that a 1000000000 muslims are, are participating or observing ramadan this month, but they may not know what that really meets. yes course you know, we use this opportunity to invite tell a. busy neighbors, you know, over there's nothing better they say like a nice versus the most,
10:36 pm
an a date that can bring communities together. and then you introduced to them all that ramadan and tales. and of course, we are more and more conscious and aware in recent years i have to say for the last 10 years or so of being eco friendly, environmentally friendly. so since we opened our moss, which is arguably the 1st eco friendly mosque in europe, we have always pushed this agenda on green, faith going, going green. so like this year, amazon, our 1st major lecture that was given by our chairperson. she of the hockey murat was green way, we're going green. so we're constantly emphasized that and when we bring our neighbors and colleagues of at the fates and non, we basically share the same idea with them and show them what it looks like to have an eco friendly. he thought, which is somewhat more simple than usual. but mainly it looks like something which
10:37 pm
is taking care of the environment. corey, can you tell me how? because i think a lot of people who maybe don't know that much more rom and i really associated with fasting being kind of the, the a big part of it. how does that lead to more consumption? what are we talking about here? well, during ramadan, ah, the focus is on food. a lot of the focus is on food. so after a day of fasting, are you want it or you want to do is eat, you want to get that the most. they just like the man that the so with that consumption, there's a lot, there's a lot of weights and that's what needs to change. there's weights from that. there are disposable big. there's waste from the food, there's waste from water. and that makes the change. well, when you say there's, there's weiss's or more waste than any other time of the year. yes. so did i promise you the dumpsters behind most massage, it are more full during ramadan than any other time. elaine,
10:38 pm
how did you become involved with the idea of a green? if tar it is exactly the background as the mom and sister corey has mentioned me personally going to mass taking my friends that you my long muslims firms. i was always ashamed, walking past piles of rubbish, garbage and especially food left. others. as mentioned, a lot of people are coming in. so we have high volumes of guests attending at the mosque. so usually what most used to do is they tend to just buy disposable items and the use of a lot of waste of food. so, but this has really brought us to the conclusion that we need to have a positive change. and what better time is there than in ramadan, when the community, a whole a community of muslims worldwide is consciously pursuing to do a better thing and to improve them serves improved environment. so we usually have
10:39 pm
this gain and this need to do great things. so especially at that time, it is a perfect opportunity to do a change for a better. so on the one hand, there at the mosque is seeing these pies. and on the other hand, they're trying to improve their and their donations their prayers. so how does this go hand in hand? so we came up with a campaign. how you can do step by step and change for improvement. when it comes to disposable items, we encourage mass. that's one of those goals that we have in the green. if our goals to not use any disposable items, when it comes to food left, always we ask our guests in advance to bring containers so that if there are any food left overs so that they can donate them to a charity to a homeless house. so that there is no left over that food or at the mos i want to bring in a video comment from, nor is there as id. she's obsessed to professor at the university of maryland. here to check this out. a lot of the times, the conversations that we have about climate change or the need for climate action
10:40 pm
and environmental sustainability, it can sometimes feel like these ideas are being kind of impose. there's this kind of economic burden of environmental action and sustainable action that is placed on other countries in the world. and particularly in the global south, it was actually north article in the conversation that kind of led us to doing an episode about this. so i had this pulled up on my computer right now, and i'm just going to tweet it out for our audience. don't go now, but after the show you guys can check that out if you need to find me a twitter is just at josh rushing. and it's really excellent article you can read about that. later on to john, i want to ask, you, could you kind of mentioned it at the beginning, but i'm curious what it means that you're part of one of the 1st eco friendly mosque in europe. yes. so like we said, you know, we realize that, you know, it is our religion, our holy scripture which pushes us, you know, it,
10:41 pm
it is basically asking us to set an example to others by being environmentally friendly, using materials that can sustain our planet for much longer than what we are. so our mosque is quite unique in the sense that the entire building actually is made of wood timber. it's timber structure. it's like people don't even realize from some pictures you, you might not even get it. even the walls themselves are actually build of timber, even the roof itself, the whole building is actually made of wood, not just the columns, which look very nice and beautiful. so, you know, for me to be part of this particular project is an additional honor, but an additional responsibility or, but like i just said earlier on, our chairperson, she had to take him. rod is a very strong believer and proponent of this green faith so called a green theology. so or whatever we can raise weekly we, we used the opportunity to raise awareness in our congregation to educate them that
10:42 pm
we are genuinely being appointed by god to look after this planet. and generally the scripture is telling us not to waste. yes, you can sustain yourself that there's nothing wrong with eating and drinking in moderation, but not going beyond the line of waste and you know, extravagance. so we use that our model, like her brother, her name said as a really big platform to share that strong message with our congregation and raised their, you know, level of awareness. and hopefully, you know, it will somewhat penetrates, you know, in our communities and family levels and then neighborhood levels and, and, and, and maybe you know, to, to, to a larger scale. corey, will you talk about your, your, if tar kit, if you will. i found that really interesting. yes. so i'm a long time ago when i only had 4 kids. so i was that the match did and there were
10:43 pm
styrofoam cups on the table, full of dates for people to break their fat. and people pick that up, that cup, ate the food bunker fast and threw away the cup. and i'm like that only happen that was only used for less than 5 seconds. this is going to happen over and over and over again for the rest of ramadan for $2930.00 days. and this might be happening in other massages. so i had to make a change. so i made a change with my family 1st. i created an if bar kit, so it had a stainless steel tre usable tumbler, even had a cloth napkin. we had bamboo cutlery and it became our family tradition to bring these if to our kids, wherever to wherever, if tommy went to where they'd be at the the master or whether it be at the one path . and so when i'm bringing these kids, people are looking at me like this, you know, what are you doing?
10:44 pm
and so i got to start these conversations about sustainability and, and ramadan and how there's, there's the disconnect to crate all this waste when a lot does not love the wasted, if the disconnect. so i had to make a change. and then you know, later on i with the other people bringing their little it's our kids as well. my fella. so it was, it was just a way to make a change for my family 1st and start some conversation. we just go back to one thing you said at the beginning of this is a side note, but did you say what i only had 4 kids? yes, i have. i need to go to a fictions. oh, look able to play some video. this is actually from a bill from the organization. you work with green. if tar, your watch us a jonathan with regents even that
10:45 pm
angry that he was wanted to discuss what's easy and mainly with if we don't have enough data, we're at our home. let's ask the guests to bring your own. it's an a to accept food to those in the next sprint. oh word. and would you rate us to take up the idea or plan off of, of corey who had my different change here. elaine key talked us was some of the biggest things that people can do during this ramadan to make their ramadan more green. yes. first of all, i like to say i completely agree with both. corey said, under the mob said, because basically these are the core principles that we need to engage with because they actually allow us to engage the whole community. these are core principles that regardless of islamic background, you will accept an agree upon that's the beauty of stewardship. like when we talk about me than the balance and also among the,
10:46 pm
the got given trust to us as well. so thinking coming back to your question in that regard, the easiest way to start is to start today, even if it's one step, but to have it sustainably growing. what we offer at the organization is a green star guide. it is something that you can just print out on our website or like just download it on your phone. it's an english german, and it allows you to go step by step on the daily basis to a more sustainable it spar. that means that you can have also information about the impact of whatever step you taking, and that is the connection between your local action and the global impact. let's say, as just the corey mentioned, you're not going to bring any more disposable items. let's count that down to how many tons of plastic you're saving. let's count that down to how much c o 2 you're saving with every single step. and this is something that is particularly designed for households. it is designed for institutions such as most consistent
10:47 pm
associations that usually host a lot of gas, but especially also to the mouth. anyone regardless of their background, whether you have a high income, the low income, and regardless of where you are, this program this for you to make us more stable and then we'll use tweet a link that to me. it's just josh on twitter and i'll get that out to our followers after the show where they can download that. yeah, we do. do that be really helpful. okay. i'm going to bring in another video comment . this is from mom's. a body is a content creator and islamic bod, pakistan check this out. and i was on one good idea. couldn't be to play thinking beef with lenders. i have no doubt about it. a lot of eve, but the impact on diamond is pretty scared. he could also do this by going, i don't want to fool temperature moves in our home didn't garden. so the best thing about about your thought is that the soil is actually related more. so the thing i think rules of it here that i think this, we could do this and probably it was the gob and footprint all food is when i
10:48 pm
believe that it is very important for all of us to learn about sustainability. and obviously the impact of sustainable food on climate change. so yeah, well that, and then we just keep on raising the motor. we had mr. ward sustainable food. yeah, i see everyone kind of nodding and smiling along with that. and then i love also just an opportunity to hear from someone in pakistan saying the soil is really good here. you know, we, we can grow our own local vegetables, but it's such a global thing, ramadan, right? i mean, we're talking to people in 3 different countries right now. but a lame, i love how you point out that you can make this kind of global connection. i want to bring a one more video comment. this is from a mom, a mom must sure i'm probably messing up his last name, but he's at the south gate mosque in london. hold on is the month when we connect with god. we connect with our fellow humans. we connect with ourselves. when we connect, we understand the pain and suffering of people that we don't have enough. and we
10:49 pm
had talked about the level, don't eat and drink, but in meshes we learn to so frustrated. we eat the right time, we need the right food in the right quantity. we don't waste. so we're teaching our communication to be more comfort of how much they eat, what they eat, as well as how much they can share with those who are around them. and recycling more, these are some of the key aspects of our faith that we would like to encourage everyone to remember not only in the month of ramadan, but throughout the year. can i add something to that? yeah, yeah. jump in place. yeah. you know, even under, under the former speaker sets of really beautifully that especially coming from packs. and since my ancestors are for pakistan. oh, harm your findings. well, the 1st cut, yet he was one of the person was one of the country. there was a 1st to implement or look to strategic development goals. that's not just for fun sake, but that's out of the fact that they are facing now the consequences of the global change that we are facing. and if you just look at the current situation of a lot of muslims, some of them are consciously saying i can cope with the situation. i'm feeling
10:50 pm
helpless. i feel overpowered. so they individually fee leg ants in a huge air gear and they're not feeling that they're having any impact. and what we would like to do with this campaign is to utilize not just only the strength of the communal effort, which is not just a region, but as you can see, it's a global impact by what sister, corey's contributing by what the mom is culture being does is a global cause having an effect immediately not aren't just on humans, but actually to your own family in my case. so this is a very personal issue. and on the other hand, it's also empowering young people, regardless of their background, regardless of which social circle they're coming from, to take action and in a beautiful way where they're engaging even inter religiously with everyone who is in their community. if you go to a local farmer and you buy from him regardless of his background, but you're supporting your local producers, you're supporting local farmers,
10:51 pm
local artwork. and that is the beauty of staying local, working locally, and then thinking globally, i want to check in with our youtube audience here. ah, we're getting a lot of love, a lot of ramadan greetings, but we're also getting a little bit of pushback. and so i'm going to push this to you a mom. ah, some say that the pushback is against the less me which you may or may not find surprising. ah, someone is saying if there was something wrong with me, it would be her arm. okay. oh, after mama i want to get out and the explore. it blew me as a 3rd. yes. all right. well no, right down the line here. let's begin with her mom. yeah, yeah, i mean it, it's an interesting comment. i have to say like, it's not everything you know that, that, that seem to be harmful to us. you know, at 1st instance that the religion says it's low floor or weiss versa, you know, we, we just can't sometimes get the divine wisdom behind certain legal rules. or yeah,
10:52 pm
i mean, it is a valid point. no, no, no doubt about that. so what we can propose is line just like and yes, it seems like we need to consume some meet or for those people who can and feel i'm doing that. but again, in moderation, you know, quote on mentions, you know, animals and how god facilitated them. you know, for our usage, and i really like this philosopher who recently said, you know, all that we have on this planet should be seen as a source of life. not that resource to be used. you know, you know, be basically, this is what the koran teaches us need to see all different species as nations in their own right. you know, we did on integrity. and so if we looked at the animal kingdom from that point of view, i'm pretty sure that you know, we would start consuming less of meat and will, will, you know, like maybe on some very special occasions. and we were realised by the end of the road. well, we are still fine and healthy and,
10:53 pm
and nothing has happened to us. do not eat meat is our weep. corey, what is your other? so one of the other, one of the, in one of the videos someone was talking about ramadan is about connecting with the law and connecting with ron, connecting with community. i want to add that ramadan is also about connecting with the prophet peace and blessings be upon him. so what did the profit do? we should want to do what the profit do muslims love their meat? yeah, i'm not telling anyone to be vague and i'm not vague and just let just less like the ma'am said moderation. try one day a week built with vegetables, fruits, tow grains, lentils, nets, the template that like there's a lot to eat, but but left eat like the profit. did he see upon him who usually ate meet on special occasions though he was most likely a summer vegetarian. so left b like to pocket and just eat less elim i can just agree. i
10:54 pm
me personally being someone who for over 15 years has been raising chickens who has worked in the organic and hello certified meat industry. i can just oh, so just put to the occasion one question. and that is especially when we look from it from a religious perspective, we are not campaign, we're not about telling people, let's go vague and always things. let's consider not only the amount of me but also what sort of meat we are eating from. so if we're praying all day, if we're giving donations and then we want to open up a start, i break our path with good stuff. and the last one, a pilot in the koran, you always mentioned hello. what have you been? that means that it should not just only be hello, but it should also be tell you what mom can maybe later on explain to us, maybe about what it is, but to our common understanding. it is right now that how can we bring genetically modified mess slaughtered industrialized me to the occasion and claim that this has
10:55 pm
anything to do with the meat that is supposed to be hello and tell you. so it really reflects a current state and also sort of crisis that we are facing internally when we talk about like the 1st concern, the amounts of me they're going to take the meat of that the end of the day. but no one's really asking in what sort of state was this animal did it actually ever see the daylight, they didn't ever actually have like reading and so we did it actually ever get real food? i mean, they eating more antibiotics, then probably we are consuming that the end of the day really it is about not just only yes or no, but also the how, where everything's coming from. how can it be laws if it hasn't really seen the daylight. so i just like to add this to the occasion for the discourse, or we got it just couple minutes left or i wanna bring on one more piece of video and then some commentary after it. oh,
10:56 pm
what does it mean to be a van? these are losing their homes to france and bangladesh and pakistan. communities of starving due to drops in somalia gunston and decisions all dominated by the powerful fees from wealthy governments to cooper pollutants. listen on the south and the conversation. we make up a quarter of the planet we deserve to be part of the creation reaches up to represent our so we are 2000000000 voices speaking together, turning up the heat on an option shining a light on injustice because peace, harmony, and balance on it starts with talking about it, a mom's agenda, i'm thinking that you know, so many of the countries are being impacted by climate change, our muslim countries. how do you take this advocacy out of the month of ramadan and connect it kind of year round to the global community?
10:57 pm
yeah, it's a really good question. and maybe that's not a coincidence. you know, that it's mainly most in countries that are affected by the, you know, the current climate catastrophe or change that, you know, maybe we need to start reading our book again, you know, properly and practice it as we should. and the call, you know, is quite blatant and direct to us. so i think like i said, ramadan is just the basis where we really, you know, very uniquely but very consistently and persistently train ourself to restrain, to, to withhold, to abstain from is like giving up things. so consuming less, less of an intake design was so, so adamant in rather than you or to at least, you know, you can have eaten more just because you, you stop teaching for 14 or 12 hours and then all the eat at the time. that's right . that's right, amount to months, you got to the class,
10:58 pm
so i think we need to boss on this message. so mom, i need to stop you there because that that's, that's all the time we have. i want to thank you in a leim and corey, for joining us. i want to say ramadan will bark to everyone out there who's observing at this month. and everyone else will see you next time on the strength. ah, ah, a
