hello, i'm rob matheson and this is the news all alive from doha coming up in the next 60 minutes for the 1st time in the u. s. history, a president is charged with a crime. donald trump is likely to surrender soon in a case involving payments to an adult film star. the bell russian leader says russia may store tactical nuclear weapons in his country while calling for a cease fire in ukraine. italy becomes the 1st european countries, a blog, sat cbt, a popular ai shop on saying it's worried about privacy. and i'm far as small with the sports wimbleton as lifted its ban on russian and bell, russian players organizers bar them from last year's event in response to russia's invasion of ukraine. ah,
6:02 pm
it's just past 15, g m t and millions of americans have woken up to one of the most consequential moments in their history. for the 1st time, a former u. s. president has been charged with a crime, a grand jury and new york voted to indict the 45th president of the united states. donald trump. a specific charges have not yet been made public, but they are tied to an investigation into payments made by trumps form a lawyer to an adult films sought stormy daniels before the 2016 presidential election drums expected to appear in a new york course early next week. is calling the indictment political persecution . gabriel elizondo begins coverage from new york. after more than a week of intense speculation and anticipation, manhattan district attorney ivan bragg leaves his office in new york. having just made history minutes later, a spokesperson confirmed that a grand jury bragg convened had voted to indict former president donald trump over
6:03 pm
alleged hush money to a former adult film star. and that prosecutors were working out the arrangements with trumps lawyers for the former president to turn himself into authorities. it wasn't long before a typically combative. trump responded through a post on social media. trump calling the indictment an attack on our country, the lakes of which has never been seen before. stormy daniels and her alleged sexual encounter with donald trump is at the center of the criminal case against the former president. after she threatened to go public about the affair in the final days of trumps, 2016 presidential campaign trumps. then fixer michael cohen paid her a $130000.00 to keep quiet. cohen, who testified before the grand jury has said he made the payments at trump's direction, and in 2018 pleaded guilty to violating campaign finance laws. not revenge, right? what this is is about accountability. i don't want to see any one,
6:04 pm
including donald trump in guided, prosecuted, convicted incarcerated, simply because i fundamentally disagree with them. this is all about accountability . he needs to be held accountable for his dirty deeds. trump has always denied the affair, and also initially denied any knowledge of the payment, but now says it took place as a legitimate legal expense ah. under new york law, it is the falsification of business records, not the payment itself. that would be trump crime a misdemeanor. and only if prosecutors can prove he made the payment and falsified records specifically to hide the affair right from voters or the i r s. would it be a felony or a more serious crime that could come with jail time? the source of the occasion of records for the purpose of committing tax evasion
6:05 pm
would be the addition, specific crime to elevate falsification of business records from a misdemeanor to a felony. the exact charges against donald trump in the indictment are still under seal, and if not made public, it's expected early. next week. trump will arrive here in new york to turn himself into authorities. he'll then base a judge and then be released. trump is the 1st current or former president of the united states to ever face criminal charges. gabriel is on. i'll just either new york in the diamonds john strong opinions from americans across the political spectrum. it's not a which can do something wrong. you just, you should be just like everybody else, just think it, it's going to not get anywhere and it will come back to be bad on the democrat. i'm sick of the whole thing sick of the trop investigations of the biden
6:06 pm
investigation with get on with, with real problems. real issue. this is a crime that's happening right now. this should not be going on. i'm here to stand in front of him to defend him if i get people i brag the teachers in. we're live in washington, d. c for the lasers reaction from the u. s. capital 1st, we're going to head straight to new york where kristin salumi standing by outside the manhattan district attorney's office. versus how our americans reacted to this well, many americans, whoa, got to find out that the indictment had actually come to light. their headlines like this. i and the local newspapers, i certainly there was a lot of speculation that an indictment was coming, but now it's official. and the reaction has really broken down along party lines. democrats, and here in new york, it's a heavily democratic city. democrats,
6:07 pm
many of them you asked, they say these charges are a long time coming and they expect and would like to see many more in terms of the other investigations that the former president is facing by. the indictment news certainly has not hurts donald trump. among his base of supporters, he still remains the most popular republican likely to run for president in the next to lashan i. he is by far and away the most favoured among republicans in poles and that if anything his base is more fired up than ever president i, when it got out that an indictment was likely got tried to get ahead of it. ah, calling it a which hind calling it a political persecution and rallying his base using the news to find res, so where you stand on? the indictment is largely where you stand on politics in general in the united states. i know that specific charges as it was talking,
6:08 pm
been talking about before having been made public yet, but i'm seeing that there are maybe be facing about 30 chance or so related to business for tell us a bit more about the case. and of course, trump's defense that's right. when the president appears before a judge, we expect that to happen on tuesday. the indictment will be unsealed and will know exactly than what the charges are, but they are expected to be related to a hush money payment made to a, an adult film star that trump allegedly had a sexual encounter with the president has long denied having any affair with the woman stormy daniels as she's known. ah, he's also denied attempting to cover up a payment to stormy daniels. and under u. s. law, paying a woman to be quiet would not be a charge that could be brought against the president or anyone for that matter. it
6:09 pm
is the covering, up of the pay men that would constitute a crime and or even that would just be a misdemeanor. unless the president, i was proven to have covered up the payment to further another crime than what it rise to the level of of felony. but we are hearing that the district attorney has a dozens of charges that he's expected to level against the president and come tuesday. well, we'll get exactly the details of that and the president will have to appear before the judge to answer to them to enter a plea. we know he'll plead not guilty as that's what he's been claiming all along . he's not guilty. i'm and he'll be treated like any other accused criminal before the court, except that he'll be surrounded by secret service and a plethora of security from police to federal law enforcement agencies who are
6:10 pm
concerned of course, that things could get out of hand here if demonstrators descend on the court, kristen for that. thank you very much indeed. christine soon talking to us from new york, we're going to go to washington dc and chicago. chauncey kristen telling us there that the u. s. public's response has been pretty much along party lawyer so far. what's the political response to all of this along party lines as well, except with some nuance. i think there are a lot of very relieved members of congress when news of this indictment 1st, leach on thursday evening because congress had just to go into recess for 2 weeks for the pass over at easter, used to holidays already on the plains home. going back to their constituencies, they didn't have to confront reporters on capitol hill. they have to do so today. having said that, clearly this was kind of graphed for some time. so the leadership and other key members of the republican party in the house certainly had that statements prepared
6:11 pm
. they treated them out and they're very largely along the lines that we've heard from donald trump, himself. this is a which shot this is politically motivated. the speaker of the house, kevin mccarthy, tweeting rather darkly about the potential congressional investigations into the new york district attorney. well, that nothing, nothing has been announced. interesting. then this is where the nuance comes and we haven't gotten anything from the senate leadership much mccardle, for example, that doesn't radio silence on from the senate side where, where there is rather more, more of an impulse to break with trump and the republican party, kevin mccarthy, of the house a big as a big trunk contingent there. these rather, rather beholden, beholden to them middle off in the white house study, neglect biden's in mississippi, on his way to mississippi, looking at storm damage that but clearly they're not going to comment all this will . they don't want to comment on this. we got the sense, so there was a report. so the member of the democratic party, members of democratic party were told not to celebrate this or they were told not to keep things sombre. that's very much what we've been hearing is you know,
6:12 pm
this is a, this is a dark day for democracy and justice and so on. but i'm on the sidelines there that has been that grumbling and the democratic party that this is the wrong indictments . this isn't the one where they want to start with because it's probably the one most difficult to prove. it's probably the most, most it doesn't rise to the level of january the 6th, you know, and so on. so there's sense that, you know, they'd rather pop something, some of the democratic body would have, rather than that happened, da have d, i had delayed this indictment and that's perhaps the most serious charges against trump come to the for initially, obviously donald sometimes said to be leading the fuel as far as the republican candidacy for the 2024 presidential race. what's the play out for this? what's the likely effect? as christian suggested this is you know, that there's, there's consensus. this is pretty much suck the oxygen out of the primary race. now run de santis, who is the most seen as the most competitive challenger hasn't actually, hasn't actually declared yet, but the governor of florida,
6:13 pm
he's had to tweets out support for trump segment. this is, this is a political which on nikki haley for example. before, you know, boss has also said look, this is, this is also which on to, but this is going to solidify trumps position amongst the base it seen is a popularity ratings approval ratings against the scientists have skyrocketed since news of the potential for indictments came through his fundraising as chris was saying, has gone through the roof. i've got 2000000 dollars this month alone. since the news of the indictment of the potential for indictments was announced when things again get more nuanced and complex. so as there is an understanding of the republican party, i think that although this plays very well with the primary base, it may not in a general election among swing vases. and therefore, even if the republicans in washington are usually in washington, we can see that this is very good for trump from a primary base perspective. those fears that he will be damaged goods and a general election are also resurfacing. but in the end,

up to them to pick the presidential nominee, it is the base she had. thank you very much indeed. she hovered thompson talking to us from washington. d. c. any more head on the noosa, including we're going to look at the conditions of pakistan's overcrowded and aging prisons plus i rob mcbride and jen, hey, south korea where the early shore side as spring is an even sure aside of climate change and in sports new season news was the same so high or tiny baseballs the goose name starts on a high fathers here without stormy. ah! the bellowing president says talks are still going on with moscow about deploying russian tactical nuclear weapons inside delos, alexander lucas. shank, as a friend and ally of president vladimir putin, he made the commons during his annual address to the nation. local shanker says

that our plans to invade his country from neighboring poland. they also called for a truce for the war in ukraine, as well as talks without spring conditions, dosage. bodies got more from moscow. the bell russian president said that he is willing to host lot of miracle and ski. and he urge the ukrainian president to come to the negotiating table as soon as possible. lucca shackles said that nobody wants to fight, and his proposal includes a complete freeze in all the forces that are fighting in ukraine. he said, all those forces the russian forces will basically hold their positions where they are. and that is when the ukranian president could come to the go shading table and continue a process that would not involve any western or eastern countries. in those talks, the alexander lucas ankle also said that people don't want to fight. he did also
6:16 pm
say that his country is under attack. he accused the polish defense minister of saying that nato should consider opening a 2nd front against his country. if ukraine fails, and he also made the accusation that the west is preparing to invade bella ruth, to destroy the country, he also use this occasion to highlight the fact that his talks with the russian president vladimir putin, our ongoing, and they are going to secure an agreement that would see the return of nuclear weapons to bella luce, there is a lot of details that need to work out. but it's clear by the speech being delivered by the bell of russian presidents that he feels his country's under attack. and that the return of nuclear weapons to his country would be a defensive maneuver, but certainly it will see a increase intentions in this region. bother kalonski is a pro preventative of foreign affairs for the united transitional cabinet of ballots. the by the rational position in exile is in the lithuanian capital vilios
6:17 pm
. he's joining us live, so thank you very much indeed for being with us. how do you think that people in dollars are going to react to this speech given by the president? well, people have spoken about nuclear weapons in those since long, and they took the oppose this move. we voluntarily refused from nuclear weapons in 990. and since then there has been a complete consensus that will not do not need to nuclear weapons. we don't want to be part of any major military conflict at the same time. and what we have seen with the state of polluting is that he decides on the deployment of nuclear weapons on a foreign soil in a sovereign country. and this happens only because we get under control of food. and interestingly, very, very important mismatch here between the wars are put in and is that we're putting a sand on february just couple of days ago that russia deployed these weapons on the territory,
6:18 pm
but does not transfer it under control shameka. and today we are sent to repeatedly said that this weapon is mine, and that will control it. so these remains to be a very uncertain situation with very, very quickly growing weeks that it might go on to come out of control. russia have been violating the n p t clauses here and at the same time dragging our country further informed. so there in the conflicts, that's why the additional dollars, some people will be took it against us. obviously this, it was covering the protests against alexander law center falling the, the route 3 election in 2020. those, the protests were very significant in size. do you think that this kind of rhetoric is likely to galvanize the opposition further against the president? definitely that is a major development and if my trigger serious brought it in and dos it would
6:19 pm
trigger at the same time have been leading in fear since 2020 lucas has waged massive progressions again, the wisdom, hundreds of thousands of people have been forced to leave the country, thousands of political prisoners in prison. now, there are about 10000 russian troops on the doors and not only to threaten new britain, but also to keep an eye on donaldson who might protest against the question. why did he conditions right now? i'm not exactly conducive to, to any peaceful protest, but we know for a fact that since our against look there against russia needed to brandon on our tory and their demon against the war against grace. and just couple of weeks ago, you could have seen the sub attach reparation against their conference rational, blaine on the dawson territory, which was damaged by those in partisans. it was not only to support to britain,
6:20 pm
but also protest against the presidents of russian military on the dentist. i de santis are un security council meeting being held today friday to discuss the situation in ukraine, but also more likely the situation in bella was what's going to be happening there . so this meeting is taking place right now. even before the meeting, we managed to circulate the letter of superintendent get to the president of the security council, and wish which has been distributed among all member states and has been acknowledged that these decision to deploy nuclear weapons seen there also goes again. we'll deliver some people and this month to stop this might be prevented by the international community. and the security council is executive, the body international body of depths must take as severe action against the perpetrators, russia, and the resume. to stop this from happening because this, this leads only to escalation. this needs to hire reefs of this. busy spin over

u. s. president donald trump has been indicted by a new york grand jury. the panels been investigating money pay by transform a lawyer to an adult film star. the bell russian president is called for the truth between russia and ukraine there, as well as peace talks without preconditions. alexander lucas, anchors of friend and ally of russia's president wooten, has been making his annual address to the nation. malaysia's highest court is dismissed, former prime minister, nancy russell, attempt to have his corruption conviction viewed as each serving a 12 year sentence, his part and a scandal involving the states investment fund. okay, let's go back to our top story. donald trump's indictment is just one of his many legal troubles. there's also the january the 6th riot. in that case, a committee is recommended that trump should be charged for inciting his supporters to storm the capital building after his 2020 election. los another criminal investigation is looking at attempted election, ford and the state of georgia,
6:32 pm
prosecutors say trump pleaded with election officials to try to overturn his last to joe biden. and last year, the f. b, i rated his florida home to retrieve hundreds of classified white house documents that were not returned at the end of his term. or debbie hines is a former baltimore city prosecutor and legal analyst. she's joining us now from baltimore. thank you very much indeed for being with us. i want to ask you about the timing of this particular case. the, the critics of the process are saying that this has taken far too long. but does this give us some indication of the confidence that the da's office has in the case that it's bringing? well, i think any time a district attorney brings a case, they do have confidence that they can get a conviction in the case or otherwise they would not present it before the grand jury. i mean, when i prosecuted, there was no way i would bring a case if i basically thought that i could not meet the high legal standard. getting a guilty conviction beyond a reasonable doubt, which is
6:33 pm
a very high standards. i believe that album brack into your da does believe that, but i still say without knowing what the evidence is and knowing what the witnesses are before the grand jury that left the grand jury to indict it is not appearing to be as strong of the case as the other cases that you've mentioned, why do you think that they've chosen this particular case to bring, as opposed to the other ones that you're talking about? i've been oh, we did it all separate investigation. one does not have anything to do with the other one. so what is going on with them? are a lot of documents case, what is going on with the january 6 case? what is going on with any of the other cases that are being investigated at this time? they're totally under different jurisdictions. i mean what's happening in new york with alan brent? she doesn't have any involvement and with the georgia da willis and neither does she or he have any involvement with the special council jack smith or america,
6:34 pm
or the department of justice. they all stand alone separate and apart. so they're doing what they perceive is right, as in their own individual capacity not with regard to any of the other or paces that are potentially pending. or correspondence only. i would describe and saying that the, some democrats are saying that this was the wrong case to bring that people should be focusing on other cases because those ones are stronger, they might carry longer penalties. trump, obviously, as we know, provokes strong responses within people. strong personal reactions and there are a lot of people in the u. s. who believe that this is politically motivated. many of them on both sides of the political divide. what is that, the risks you think that all of that could either influence or d rail, the legal process itself? well, i mean, we're dividing country at this point in time. i think we have to admit this more so than we've ever been in the history of the united states. i release in more recent times in the history of the united states, no matter what happened,
6:35 pm
where the charges are brought. china not rush. it was going to be seen as a political situation. yes, i do agree. as i said that i think that the new york case might be the one of the weakest ones, not exactly the strongest of the ones that we don't really know where whitney says and what evidence was presented before the grand jury to leave the grand jury basically come so it's the same thing to indict $11.00 or more charges. that being said, we're in a country where we believe that no one is above the law and for us to even have a conversation about if this is politically motivated, if he should have been charged, that he should have been charged with one of the other cases that both against the fact that no one is above the law and that needs even a former president of the united states because we do not have those can sort of a discussion when we're talking about the people that i represent in court or the people that i have prosecuted and we never had those discussions. so in this
6:36 pm
country, in america, united states of america, we believe that no one is above the law. then there is no need for us to discuss political ramifications. what the political outcome will be, despite the fact that donald trump is a former president. he must be treated just as much as anyone else that a prosecutor in this case out. and greg would have brought charges against any other person that he believed he could prove a case beyond a reasonable doubt. and that is the standard. despite that, of course, this is that we're on charge the territory in a sense. this is the 1st time in history and us history of presidents being charged with a crime. how much do you think that this is actually a test of the strength of the legal process? how much of it is an opportunity if you like, of the us legal process to demonstrate it's its strength in the face of such public opinion? i don't think we can put it that way. i don't think any one case in this country
6:37 pm
should be a test of what our criminal justice system is. our criminal justice system is bound by rules and evidence and laws. donald trump can come into court, he is presumed innocent as a former prosecutor. i say that even though we may think that some people have made up their minds, he is presumed innocent under the law, the prosecutor must lay out its case. it must present its case beyond a reasonable doubt before a jury of people, if they are trying to get a conviction or he can plead guilty, has other choice that he had been the case if you choose to do so. but at the end of the day, not one case in this country should be a test of what our criminal justice system stands for. we are a country of rules and laws and we must follow them regardless of where the evidence leads. and regardless of who the evidence is, again, even if it is against a former president of the united states,
6:38 pm
the law should be the same. up to this point, it has been more aspirational in terms of no person is above the law than it has actually been practiced in reality and as an african american. as a black woman, a former prosecutor, i do want the law to stand for each and every person in this country, even if it is against the former president of the united states. that's the rule of law in the us. we really appreciate your giving us the benefit of your expertise in this debbie hines, as always, thank you very much and do for your time. thank you. thank you. farmers as african paddle and peon ask of his story as has been denied parole deserving 13 years. after being jailed in 2016 for the murder of his girlfriend, we the scene camp. the story is claimed. he mistook his girlfriend for an intruder the night she was killed. the founders in south africa automatically eligible to apply for parole after half their sentence that his barrels been denied. because
