3:02 am
ah. but we begin with breaking news out of occupied east jerusalem. where is really forces of storm the aisle acts a mosque and fired, rubber coated bullets and sun grenades during ramadan. praise video shows women and children crying for help. as is really forces beat palestinian worshippers with battens. a few palestinians have been reported injured, is really forces or accusing worshippers of barricading themselves after exceeding the agree timings. hundreds have been forcibly removed from the side sled spring in al jazeera natasha. go. name will joins his on the form from occupied, his shoes, them and natasha. what more do we know happened? well, i do want to point out that this is not a surprise yesterday on social media. i saw the bombastic rhetoric circulating on social media with calls for palestinians to come to l ox,
3:03 am
a mosque in anticipation of the passover holiday on wednesday morning in which jews will be expected from 7 o'clock in the morning until 1130. to visit the compound. as part of non muslim visiting hours. so this, these type of clashes again, were expected based on what i was seeing on social media. as you mentioned, the police are saying that dozens of people barricaded themselves inside l. x a mosque. tuesday night into wednesday morning. they said the police that the people had a stock pile of stones sticks and fireworks. the police say that they attempted to coax the people to come outside of the mosque. there was an agreement with the compound authorities that no one would be spending the night. police say when they could not coax the people to come out peacefully. that is when they entered the
3:04 am
mosque and began firing stunned guns and forcibly removing people. as you said, people have been there been some injuries and there have been arrests. the jordanian foreign ministry is condemning this attack, the jordanians or the custodians of the holy site. a mass as well is also condemning this saying it is an unprecedented. 5 and people, quote, should inflict upon the occupation the price of this crime, the images we've seen a quite shocking, some of them at lisa. so pictures that we've seen of worship as in handcuffs, lying on the ground. and again, stun grenades being fired as people frayed. natasha reminders of the significance of this fight over locks and why such a flashpoint of tensions between palestinians and israelis? well,
3:05 am
we should also remind our viewers that these types of images and these types of clashes are not new. it's an ongoing cycle of violence, especially at a time like this. so this year as last year ramadan, passover and easter are all overlapping. so that's increased the desire for the 3 minus people who follow the 3 monotheistic religions to enter the compound. in this case, we're talking about jews, particularly, and muslims, and what do the clashes, how did the crashes really begin? it's an issue of access and restrictions, palestinians have already been restricted to access the mosque during ramadan. if you're 55 years old or younger and you're a man, you're going to need a permit to enter. and now of course, people were, are being told that during this period of ramadan they would not be permitted to spend the night inside the mosque. on wednesday morning between beginning at 7
3:06 am
o'clock local and until 1130 june will be expected in the larger numbers than usual to come into the compound. in honor of passover holiday, we will not be allowed to pray that is a red line. they never enter the mosque, but they do roam around the compound. and this is obviously a always a very tense situation. the palestinians feel very strongly about it because the type of jews that enter for visiting hours for non muslims tend to be very conservative. nationalists ok natasha. thank you very much for that update. let's show you the fee now in nobliss in the occupied west bank. whereas you can see people have taken to this to the streets, to protest there after the storming of the acts of mos earlier by israeli forces. will fire drive a coated bullets in some grenades during ramadan prayers. people taking to the
3:07 am
streets to protest this later sanctioned by israeli forces will keep a close eye on that situation. and bring you the latest as in when we have more information. in the meantime, let's move on to the indictment of former u. s. present. donald trump, his private jet, has landed in west palm beach, florida, and his supporters are gathered on the streets near his residence in my lago, from where trump is expected to speak from very shortly. his pleaded not guilty to 34 felony counts any manhattan courtroom earlier. the 1st sitting or former u. s. president. to do so, let's take a closer look at the case against the former u. s. president and manhattan district attorney alvin bragg says, trump is charged with 34 counts of falsifying business records in the 1st degree in order to conceal damaging information and unlawful activity before and after the 2016 election. the unsealed indictment accuses trump of directing 3 different instances of hush money payment to cover up alleged affairs. as statement from the
3:08 am
district attorney's office said from august 2015 to december 2017 champ orchestrated his so called catch and kill scheme through a series of payments that he then conceal through months of false business entries . in one instance, the da alleges $30000.00 was paid to a former trump tower, dorman, who claimed to have a story about a child tromp had out hot out of wedlock. in the 2nd instance, a $150000.00 was paid to a woman who alleged she had a sexual relationship with trump. and in a 3rd in since, 12 days before the presidential general election, $130000.00 was wired to an attorney for an adult film actress. now this is the scene inside president trump's mar legal residence. way as you can see, his supporters have gathered waiting to hear from him for the 1st time since the indictment earlier in new york to day. that is expected to happen in just the next
3:09 am
few minutes. we'll bring that to you live in the meantime. let's go live to al jazeera john henderson who is in new york and has been covering this momentous day for us throughout the day here on al jazeera. talk to us about how the day unfolded in new york and what have been the reactions to this indictment well, it was just about 6 hours ago that for the 1st time in united states history, a president pleaded not guilty to a charge of $34.00 of them in fact, in this case, but he was before that he was fingerprinted as a matter of fact, the next time magazine cover is an illustration of a finger print. that's a jab at trump, who's always wanted to be the man of the year. the person of the year on that magazine cover and trump was in there in person, in court to make his not guilty plea that could have been done by a lawyer. busy but he wanted to do. ready himself and his lawyers came out to speak
3:10 am
afterwards. and out here on the street, there were hundreds of people, some of them protesting on behalf of the president and others, protesting against him right here where i stand in. that was all before he took off to go to mar logo, where he's, he's about to speak on that podium you were just showing, festooned with american flags. we talked to some of the protesters here. here's a little of what they had to say. well, it's about time because no one above below. i'm in a very low i'm if i break the law, i'm the i go to do with being like me. so the break the law, you need to be held accountable for what i think it's absolutely ridiculous because if they can do this to him, they can do it to anybody. and so that's why my come, i pay off our process is coming for an illicit affair that we don't even know have friends or whatnot. there is so many other crimes that can be taken care of and
3:11 am
even crimes that other politicians have committed. yeah, they're definitely trying to sub for, you know, being president and, you know, messing with the election in 2024. john and this certainly be interesting to hear what the former president has to say after pleading not guilty earlier what his posture and the defensive strategy is going to be from now on. this however, is not the only case that trump is involved in. tell us about the other cases and how serious they are compared to this one. it's not indeed the only case here and him as a matter of fact, legal experts a this case might be the least perilous for the former president. it can be easily dismissed by fans of trump, as a payoff to a former porn star. despite the fact that these are felonies, $34.00 of them, that he phases here, but more serious probably is the case with his special prosecutor in washington dc . looking into his handling of classified documents. he and his aides had said they
3:12 am
had all been turned back after. they were repeatedly asked for all of the classified documents, the former president had by the national archives here in washington. and then of course we had that f b i search. they found thousands of documents, and within those they found more than a 100 classified documents. and so they are now looking into whether the president broke a law there, whether he committed obstruction of justice, by ordering some of his aids not to return those documents. and that same special prosecutor is also looking in to trumps activities on january 6th, 2021. after that election that he lost, where he was a ledge to have fermented, the uprising in which his supporters took over the capitol and in fulton, county, georgia. there is another local prosecution going on. a grand jury has recommended that several people be charged. it's not clear that trump was among them,
3:13 am
but there is a smoking, gun phone call. we've all seen in which a rather heard in which he is asking. the secretary of state of the state of georgia to find him a certain number of votes so that he could overturn his loss in that state. any one of those could be perilous for the president of the charges he faces here in new york. don't typically come with a prison sentence, but the other ones, it's not clear what will happen in those cases. so trump faces a lot of legal danger. and on top of all that there's a woman who's suing him for defamation. over a case in which she alleged that he raped her, and he said he didn't do what she's saying that was that he should pay penalties for that because he's defaming her in that case. so a lot of legal exposure there for the former president and this could take a long time the case here in new york. busy alone could take over a year. john, thank you very much for john hendrick. live there in new york city. well, it's not here from chris pilkington, who's a former trump administration winehouse policy advisor. and
3:14 am
a former manhattan assistant district attorney is joining us live from washington. d. c, very good to have you with us on al jazeera. so the mystery about the charges is, is finally over and the indictment has been sealed, as we heard. first of all, what is your view of the case is, is a winnable case for the prosecution? thank you so much for having me. you know, as john mentioned this case really is unprecedented. and it's difficult sometimes to separate, particularly in this case, the politics from the prosecution. but at the end of the day, the criminal justice system is one of the most important institutions in the united states. so the case has started, right? so they have the arraignment today. that's the beginning of the case. the next steps will be probably very significant motion practice motion to dismiss motion to change venue, a number of motions, and that will sort of began kind of the, the calendar from that point. and then should that continue. and then you go to
3:15 am
a trial, and as we saw today, there was a lot of people down in lower manhattan, and there will be, you know, weeks and weeks. and if not months of an actual trial that broke. right? as you say, it's going to be expected to be a long process. what do you expect the defense strategy to be? are they going to try and stole the case? so i don't know that i would necessarily call it stalling. i think what they're going to do is try to attack the indictment. i think the disk attorney, brad came out today and made some comments about different laws that are sort of strapped into the indictment, but aren't specifically referenced. so i know they're going to have a number, i would assume that have a number of motions to see if they can actually and the case before, even you know, goes any further that will include motions of the judge and potentially could include an appeals process which would extend the case even longer. as john
3:16 am
mentioned, they are, the legal case is pending against former president trump investigations, dealing with democracy. the, the fact that this is a case that came forward 1st. what, what do you make of that and will the other cases not move forward as a result of it? yeah, i mean, i think, you know, as a former prosecutor, you typically move your case forward when it's ready. and that was the statement that disc attorney brag said today. so the other cases that you're referencing georgia and then the federal case will, will certainly move forward, you know, if and when appropriate. but in this case, a started of the clock is ticking and all the players. what chris you, you worked in the trump administration? how do you think he is feeling today? what do you expect to hear from him when he speaks actually at my level? well i, i wouldn't presume to you know,
3:17 am
think i would know exactly what the president is going to say. i can assume that you'll have some very specific comments about the process. but, but quite honestly, you know, at this point really now it's about the criminal justice process and it's also about a campaign. so that is to some very interesting pads that the president and his team will have to navigate. yeah, there is indeed a legal dimension to this, but also the political dimension. of course. how do you see this affecting the 2020 for presidential campaign. oh, i don't have a crystal ball for that one. you know, so there's a lot of political pundents that have said a lot of things, you know, my focus in this has been the fact that i work in the da's office as well as work in the administration on policies that impact underserved communities. and my co author, john smith and i have a book coming out talking you about a lot of the policies that we worked on in trump administration that really focused
3:18 am
on economic development. first step back, criminal justice reform, other things that really help the underserved communities of america. so as far as the campaign goes and we'll, we'll see how it all plays out. thank you so much. we will indeed plays on chris. thank you for talking dress chris palka turn joining us there. lie from washington d. c. well, president trump for president trump. a lot of his supporters have been coming out in his defense earlier us republican congresswoman marjorie taylor, green valley child support or is in front of the court house in new york. take a look the president and then the. c word of the balance.
3:19 am
we have a department of justice where we cannot tolerate judge dates of america no more. and we also heard from john bolton, a former diplomat informer, us national security advisor and trump administration. and he explains what his former bosses' indictment means for the us. well, i don't think anybody can considered a good day to have a former president indicted whether republican or democratic. but i think it's important to keep in mind that this is the beginning of the case, not the end of it. the real test is whether he's acquitted after trial or gets the case dismissed before it even goes to trial, or whether he's convicted. i think the outcome of the case could have very
3:20 am
different ramifications politically, certainly in the united states, much, much more important just than the well, the, the perception that this prosecution is politically motivated is very strong within the republican party. and it is produced according to public opinion polls an upsurge and trump support i, that's what i worry about. i would not have brought this case if i were the prosecutor. but the potential outcome, if trop is acquitted, is i think would be rocket fuel for his presidential campaign. which is what worries me, i'm not worried, the prosecution is going to hurt trouble. i'm worried the prosecution particularly to fails is going to help him. i think that's disastrous for our prospect of keeping him from getting the republican nomination. i think the post basically show a knee jerk reaction by republicans is so i don't think this means this solid support for trump. but as i say, if, if you take my position, which is i don't want trump to get the nomination,
3:21 am
it's obviously bad news. and we are waiting to hear from former president trump from his mar, local residence after he pleaded not guilty earlier be up to 34 felony criminal court cases. we'll, we'll be back in just a few minutes with more on that and the days avenues to seamless awe inspiring stories from around the world. ah. ready human life is foster with groundbreaking food, from award with what is going on in new york city with honor just eda. i care about how the u. s. engaged with the rough,

. earlier the former u. s. president. the 1st to be indicted in u. s. history. ah, he was arraigned again on criminal charges, making him the 1st former president to face prospect. though at the prospect of a criminal trial. he as again feed it not guilty to those $34.00 felony charges. i had trump accused of falsifying records to conceal crimes. ah, these felony charges arise from his allege, reimbursements over the course of 11 months of several people to hide an alleged affair. during the 2016 presidential election campaign, john henderson is with us. joining us now alive, drawn a we were watching president trump here, greeting his supporters. ah, it'll be interesting, of course to hear what he says after this indictment to day. but judging from what
3:26 am
his lawyers said earlier, he seems very defiant. yes i would not expect a new donald trump to come out to night. 7 on his way back to moral auto, we saw a social media posting in which he at once again attacked the prosecutor, in this case, alvin brag. talking about the amount of money you spent in and used in critically brag all along. i would expect to hear some of that, i'd expect to hear the term which hunt this i think is going to be donald trump in point. oh, not a new man. i think this is going to be the old combative of donald trump that we have known since before that 2016 election. he is not one who likes to baton to is a nice meeting. now, john leslie seemed to what he has to say is, sorry to interrupt, sir. ah,
