hello and welcome to the program. i'm how much enjoy them. demonstrations broke out in senegal, after a courts and stopped position liter. it was months on code to 2 years in prison. he was convicted of corrupting views, but cleared of rape. the charges relate to an incident that a massage parlor in 2021. supporters say the violence across the country reflects widespread anger, particularly among unemployed young people who feel ignored by the political elite . they say the case against sancho was politically motivated and part of a plot to stop him running for president next year. mackey solves government denies this and says senegal is facing an insurrection, it's promised to use all measures necessary to restore stability. nicholas hawk, was it some of those protests on thursday and has this report from the call. we're inside the car university and look at it now. to their share and destruction everywhere across this university. but also across the country,
8:32 pm
banks had been looted, supermarkets had been destroyed. and the army has been called out here inside the car university where there was heavy protests yesterday students for down the faculty of law. and that's more than a symbol, they say they don't trust the justice system of this country. following the verdict of respond sancho and they say they'll continue to fight until he's legible to run the upcoming presidential elections. and that's why the you have so much violence at the moment. that's what's at stake. it's these elections that are still 9 months away. so why now? well, what are the reasons? there's so much tension is the intentions of president microsoft will. he will really not run for a 3rd mandate in the uncertainty is fueling the violence here in san diego, a country that's not the custom to such violence,
8:33 pm
the country known for its stability and democracy. but now the military on the streets, protecting key areas, people are scared there at home. there's a thing involved of that in the local synagogues language that the syndicate leads do not like the sight of blood, but there's been so much blood being poured. and so no religious leaders are involved in trying to negotiate a way out of this political crisis. they'll be meeting with opposition leader. it was meant sancho, but also members of the government to find an end to the violence. a nicholas hawk alger 0 for inside story. the west african country with a population of 17000001 independence from france and 1960. it has good relations with the u. s. and e. u, as well as china, and has long been seen as a model of stability and democracy in a volatile region. the current unrest stems from domestic political rivalry. president monkeys all was elected in 2012 and is due to step down next year. but he
8:34 pm
argues that he could run again because of changes to the constitution in 2016, which shortened the presidential term, former tax inspector, it was months. sancho is popular among unemployed young people. and supporters say he's being targeted by political arrivals, including song songs lawyer says the jail term jeopardizes his chance of running for office in 2024. all right, let's go ahead and bring in our guests in london, which i had during mazda, who was an analyst with various maple cropped, global risk intelligence consultancy in paris, marie roget below the chair, woman and ceo of the applicant, international media group. and in the car, more so tall, a freelance journalist who is reported extensive extensively on sending goals, political and social tensions a warm welcome to you all and thanks so much for joining us today on inside story board. so let me start with you today. why has the unrest thus far in senegal been
8:35 pm
so widespread to the thank you for having me the wide spread, the news around some cause case or this case of a rate and the sexual assault overall is a has, is which this far simply because it's quite opposite of what sending out has always been known for, which means a peaceful country stable in west africa and respectful of all international laws. so to come to this, um state which right now uh the population is extremely angry at the government for simply having applied and i will explain the nature of the law over a case. uh that is um, the reason why everything is uh, under chaos right now. people are very angry and against the decision made by the
8:36 pm
justice system to decide over a case. i'm so far morero's a let me get your perspective on this. um, do you believe that there is a risk for more instability? do you think that the these protests will spread, the people get angry or so you know what we've been seeing so far? is that um, as i said before, sending in as been trying to show a peaceful and democratic she good and, and, and if the government has always is going to be to when they struggle. but i think this time around. uh, just to watch ma'am. so cool. has been quoting for riots and the, telling his support as to, to go to the presidency and over throw mr. mark usa and it, this is quite
8:37 pm
a difference we, although a fully additions, even from the old position. i remember that to a couple years ago there was situations where all the candidates to run us through for the presidents had to be excluded for running. and i think of abdul uh and the why the son and a got him wide and the county for status. uh they may have they, they found that situation very unfair to them but they didn't called for violence. so this is especially the case where you have somebody who's been condoning the uprisings calling for destruction, calling for and, and since he entered the game and that they, but i will say that the, the, the really cracking down on the,
8:38 pm
on him me more severe than all those because he has opted for confrontation for full funding institutions. so we are all very worried by the situation right now because i'm to now he said he has said to call me forced us to stop violence and to keep quiet. this is very necessary on his box. mm hm. uh which i had a supporters of it was months. sancho, of course, are angry. uh they had been denouncing the charges against the opposition leader. they have accused president mack, his salary using the justice system to eliminate political opponents. how much of that sentiment is fueling all of this? well, um yeah, just to give it a gulf of context and you know, uh, picking up uh on the point of that raised by both. so is yes,
8:39 pm
the center goal is often the price is uh, you know, in the global politics is a stable democracy is a beacon of stability. but that has an that has not been um, translate in this uh, transfer in this also occurred on the cold conditions of the center, at least people in sofa. and there are significant concerns about includes, you know, tori 10 is also a target is an accessory fees of course police force that, that we've seen on the streets of the car. erosion of julie show to do show independence demo back. sliding and these are a serious concerns because, you know, over the years since 2021 we seen at protests on to government process becoming more and more popular. because sancho represents a large part of the center calls useful population, but have not benefit from the economy in the country i see. and over the years, right, so high g d p growth and the oil and gas reserves. and they have non being significantly
8:40 pm
benefit from this, from this developments. and then they accuse the government this at present itself or failing to address device spread associated cannot make it a issues this the, the launch spots if society is dealing with, especially in urban areas that we see. so what happens is that the song co steps in and he's a pun applicant and not the best and stands that paul gets the political lead to battery. fortunately, a fight that goes to corruption since uh, 2016 since it was a pets, uh, text inspector and question the significance of friendship. loons that, uh, that, uh, you know, of apartments enjoys on the country's economy and politics. so in that sense, the widespread process are not surprising because the elimination of the a phone call from the and that's in, in 2010 for likely increase this sense of this franchise means i'm on the right on
8:41 pm
the, i'm sorry, i'm sorry to interrupt me. i'm going to get back to you in a minute about the anti french sentiment that you were just referring to, but 1st i, i want to go to the board. so again, the more so, um, it looks like what another angle to all this is. this being discussed are some of the tensions that we are witnessing now. a result of the fact that it's really unclear at this stage if president sol intends to seek a 3rd term as president to well, that is the root of this whole situation. when we look at the by turns like money because you mentioned earlier with the cases of how the facade of the end coming. what of the time before. so cool away at the political scene in san diego. uh, there was a question of their terms. so we've had different i've gotten lost with people out there, most of the bunch. the 1st one was in 2000, putting an end to 40 years of a state power for the, for the socialist party. so in 2000 and the like when he came into power,
8:42 pm
did his 2 terms to make it short. i think 2012 lucky sally came into power board on the basis that below was, was never run for that. so that was the number one reason why people voted for lucky cell and against after they went. and now what you're seeing is a repetition of those issues. my casela who has, instead of words, yes, official words about he's willing to run, but everything around it looks like it. and he really, he's, he's here, he's allies and he's political party out there have already stated that he use their candidates for 2024. so having that in mind, the population of synagogue is not willing to repeat the same mistakes of the past, meaning refusing a blow when they start term, and now accepting it for microsoft. and that is the main issue that is like, because of all this, refusing a 3rd term as
8:43 pm
a tradition for the past. if you can do the presidential candidates named now having it in the face and having to face it with violence. that is the major difference and having to face it with someone who's not willing to let go. so is not willing to let go and he's ready to use the violence in order to have um the constitution respected, meaning no more than 2 consecutive terms is. but besides that there's also the question of women's rights. and i would like to come back to that a little more. so let me, let me. yeah, i'll give you a little bit back to you on that and just to in just a couple of minutes. first i wanna ask morero's a to expand a little bit on, on the discussion we were just having with regards to a potential 3rd term for president south president sol has said that he can, that he believes he can run again for a 3rd term because of the changes that were made to the constitution in 2016,
8:44 pm
which shortened the presidential term. um, morero's a from your point of view, is this a valid argument? it can this actually be done? you know, uh, like, uh, uh, as i explained before previously. right now. uh, send it down the suggestion saying that is very particular because uh, president lucky sy valve not to run it again, not to seek that the videos, the recording that the ad tweets he made when he called for the most traditions that piece on demonstration. i must say, and he was very much against a delta. so that's why the synagogue these are very much they are upset and the they don't like that issue. and so we understand that. um, but the point is uh, when you look at the, the,
8:45 pm
the story in africa right now. you know, the people who done residents with don't see the terms of the exception. so what i mean is, you know, we all want fresh air, fresh blood, new ideas. we want a, you know, it government to new governments to comes with back. you have to renew or anything new energy. and that's what we're, we're fighting for. but i don't believe is something we have to die for, because when you look at the situation right now, let's say um 22. wow. really benefiting for me. oh, the search terms. not the population only between 1000 and the and also do see the judgment. it's very different the according to the suggestion,
8:46 pm
you see one that president cut down a hassle. good. nice way to to who's they may be 20 years. why nobody, nobody. you don't hear a, uh oh position, very much international position by the national guard. you don't hear that. and we use the consent to the murder is a, i'm sorry to interrupt you. i just want to go back to which i had about a point that he was making a moment to go up with god. you were, you were speaking specifically about anti french sentiment. i believe you said among supporters of mr. sancho, could you expand on that and talk about from your perspective why that might be driving, whether it's his popularity or some of the protest as well. yeah, i mean, historically the, the, you know, the french hold a significant decline and become political of interest. and the country as a formal um, colonizer and, and i think if i'm not mistaken, see, 2019, uh, friends was the largest source of, uh, uh,
8:47 pm
freight and direct investment inside a gall, since it was taken over by china, the mom. and so it holds a significant power in the country specifically and in the case so well, in the context of this, this process, what's happening is, is that especially 20 uh, the process that we used to be. so in 2021, i will protest this lead to the french businesses across the country, especially in the call is because they, they claim that the source of the issues that they haven't but the corruption, the socioeconomic gonna qualities. and these are the issues related to the french implants and, and in the country. so there is this perception in light of the on different sentiment acros different parts of by somebody who is a, is that the french is a seriously involved in, in senegalese, politics. and then they're the ones that pulling the strings and, and you know,
8:48 pm
song cobra presenting upon african spans and his support in the line with that sentiment as well. i'm saying that we don't want friends in the not, and i'll pull up this as well. that's why we, we so that the protest is attacked, the, the french businesses in 2021 and, you know, in the future, if the protest continue, we might be able to see the same things that gave me more. so i want to get back to a point that you were trying to make a moment ago. um, the question i have women's rights groups in, senegal have expressed concern that the sancho raped trial has set back women's rights in the country. what was it about the case that has so just made some of this and advocates for women's rights and send a go. the women have been used for this case that has underlying political matters. and that's their most the human news in this process. and that's, that's where the whole problem comes with putting the cloud over all the fights
8:49 pm
that women have gone through in order to have these laws applied and respected in the country. and so here we have a one would look, use the free for a man accused of free, but because there is no proof. and because of so many issues attached to politics over the case of race itself, people know we would just not give any attention to the real cases of. busy of, of, of sexual assaults and gatherings together, gender issues. it brings all together just issues that women will go through when it comes time for them to stand up and talk about the wait cases. so it's just a cloud over politics has been closed, being the gender issues and have been cut right? the question of weight and how far women have come to fight for their rights. and so we're j. um, let me ask you if attentions continue to escalate in senegal, what are the concrete steps that can be taken to try to calm things down?
8:50 pm
what i think uh uh, in this particular situation. um i would say both bob pat would be covered with orgy and was mine. so go on and he's as supporters responsible of what's happening. so i think i'm a system that i think was mine some coal so should core to support test. and i asked them to stop by if team stop by and that's um he's the one who has the leverage on them. they were releasing duty to him and not to the goldman obviously. so to show that he's in responsible man, i think we should do that because at the end of the day it's all about politics and that we pointed to the they are, they're not there to ensure that people are not being cute.
8:51 pm
there should be young people and the just because of the because they one power that's on the back, we each very important that he says he comes out and he says please, let's come down. we will work out this issue. what do you think? because they are new and it was the they are a lot of things which can be done from now. but 1st the violence you tube stuff which i had very some question about what the ramifications of this verdict will be when it comes to mr. sancho, his political future from your vantage point, does the sentence against mr. sancho disqualify him as a presidential candidate in 2024? can he still run and also can the sentence be appealed or is this judgement final as well, he would likely to be eliminated from the race unless there's
8:52 pm
a successful appeal by him. but that's very unlikely because the quote in separate cases refused his appeal. so he will most likely be eliminated from the race and picking uh behind the boss. and in terms of the, uh, the imprisonment it's 2 years considering that house, uh, have you know, a young song core is and, and how a galvanized huge support each bible support from the public. i do not foresee that this is the end of a song quotes, political feature, he will definitely remain as a significant in the center of the lease of politics moving forward. but they are the 2, you know, they're 2 different, a specific here in the context of protests. they're 2 different scenarios either. um, cell battery hosketler repressed simply a squash to protest. the tight uh sancho behind the boss. and we'll go ahead but the top. com, that means that includes in the country or in the 2nd. the 2nd scenario is
8:53 pm
a following. the strong and powerful pop public back a push back that will be a political negotiations between the different sites to find a peaceful solution. and, you know, maybe one last point in terms of possibly to of some of the tricky because we be, we heard over the, you know, last few days. i do not foresee any possibly to of them of the tricky because set a goal as a relatively functioning democracy, 9 this range of a political parties, robust civil society. and then they have implant, shall socially, those religious leaders, they usually step in to mediate the political, discreet between the, the, the, between the politicians. so, uh yes, it will definitely be a turbulent times for signing all. but i do not foresee definitely military intervention at this point more so i know that there are a lot of issues at play when it comes to what's going on in senegal right now. and also we just have about 2 minutes left. but i want to ask you if,
8:54 pm
if one of the things young people are taking away from this moment is if young people in senegal are seeing this moment as their opportunity to put pressure on the government and address the issues that are impacting them. the most very, very simply put, the young people do not want a 3rd time for president like this out. and they do not want to see what they call their last chance for their hopes and dreams to come to pass. just disappear with song simply but they don't want a 3rd time. they do not want salt to be put in jail because there is a history of candy, this putting a new aside because the president doesn't want them to run for presidential. that's if we have less than a minute, marie roget. if microsoft does announce that he will seek a 3rd term, will more people come out into the streets? do you believe that will be the case? oh probably they i, i think it like the idea that
8:55 pm
a lot of people don't like that idea for sure as we see. but some also do like the idea i should say that too, because i, i made some. so the point is, is exit at the end of the day, he has enough argument, the legal arguments because he said has consulted this and that, and that, that the supreme court says he can run. i think what the fruit can do is to ensure that the election's free and bit that he can run. but he might not we. so uh, i think that the, the but nobody should die for it right now. all right, well we have run out of time, so we're going to have to leave the conversation there. thanks so much for all of our guests. much ahead door mazda morero's, a below a and bar. so top and thank you to for watching. you can see the program again any time by visiting our website down to 0 dot com and for further discussion, go to our facebook page. that's facebook dot com, forward slash ag inside story. you can also,
