but he may just within the last hour made a point of saying that the military has to stay outside politics. does this give us any indication of just how concerned of the coalition is that the military might actually get involved with this? absolutely. the manager is the most important institution is right. the main thing was from the outset, the place where his dream was made, you know, is right, and he's, i'm not exactly a nation of the month you for to any doctor rhode's. right. and they were made in the army when they came as immigrants from poland and myrtle horn, you praying and you walk, they did not speak hebrew, they were not this really my identity. it's the army is the military and the military service that took some people in person to be his rage, even change the news is really means. so as it is said, is the stage with an army is our lives. another me that has

changes that we are likely to see coming up. certainly after parliament comes out to recess. i know i've asked you this question before, but i think it is important to to try to get a clarification of who do you think is in charge of israel's government right now to the service of the thing i must for mister bethany. how knows? most of it and what is not stupid, he knows he's wrong and he knows what they've done today is typically in liberal and in the sense that is there, i will become less and less democracy in more or more talk proceed as the passenger station, i think about these are ideas, is that they've had no constitution but has multiple solutions and for a very important solutions, by the way, because they've been defined use of june. and they can define it as, as a system of equality because they don't think a jewel is the point like. busy in the jewish state, but be that as it may at least is right,

it has an independent judiciary that had been independent supreme court. and that's why it was sort of respected in western countries because it had the separation best at the end. the name of democracy has destroyed democracy as we know it, by making sure that there is no oversight over 61. parliamentarians meeting the 61 parliament ariens under his leadership care. now, for example, ben, a newspaper, they can ben a political party and there wouldn't be no want to just so when, and i mention that to me who says this, what stick of democracy? you know what it sounds to me like it's supposed to be like the things i've heard recently when by your side of the toner says his cool is for democracy. when cc ridge of says he's cool, it's for democracy. there's one box of having the, the launch is a civil war to sit down and polls it in the name of democracy that china constitution says china is

the view of the white house is that this needs to be done with consensus when there is democratic change. and that is not what the white house is seeing on the ground . just the opposite is demonstrated by the. 6 fact that there are thousands taken to the streets in protest. this is the view of the white house of this is really divided, the is really population. and so that is of great concern to the united states. so the statement that is being issued is one, but it's really a feeling, but there was a need for the as really leaders to work together to find some consensus. and the billing is that this can only be brought about for a political dialog. kimberly president, i was like, hi has to go visit was in the us just a few days ago talking to president biden barton has also invited benjamin netanyahu, after some length she delayed to go to the white house to talk to him. israel is an important factor in any us election. how is this playing out in us politics as

because of some of these policies of what he considers to be the most extreme right . when coalition, since the 9 to seventy's delaying of a meeting. but it's customary between these rarely later in the us, presidents since been been not, not netanyahu came into the office in december. and of course, that has been extended as an invitation as of last week, but not to the white house where in fact, we're not sure when this is going to happen and where it could even be on the sidelines of the un general assembly in the fall so that is deliberate of sending a message that the white house doesn't like what's going on and it feels that it's partner or that is shared view of democracy is bearing in the wrong direction. and that's the message that is being sent. yeah, so subtle differences that are very significant. kimberly, thank you very much indeed for explaining that to to us. well, joining us live from brooklyn, new york is living in kingston. she's the vice president for public engagement at
9:40 pm
the new israel fund. thank you very much indeed. for being with us, kimberly was just describing towards the kind of divisions this is creating on capital hill plus the kind of divisions that are being seen amongst the american voters and american is really supports as israel supporters as well. what's the reaction amongst your members to what's been going on, as well as you may know, you as rel fund and our tens of thousands of supporters around the country and the world have always been an engine of progressive civil society, of liberal democracy in israel. so this struggle is not new for us, though it is certainly reaching new heights as this extreme right wing government led by netanyahu is pushing to truly dismantle the divisions of power that do exist within his realty democracy and including today. so we are against what is going on . we are in solidarity with the hundreds and thousands of israelis who are marching today. and we are in solidarity and in great support of hundreds of progressive
9:41 pm
non profits that are pushing for true democracy for all is rarely and those living under israel's control. but probably the prime minister, netanyahu himself has a very strong support base within the united states. as does the israel itself, and as does the, is really government, at least in previous innovations. having said all of that from your point of view, how are you detecting any shifts in um, emphasis, or shifts in support from people who would normally be stone, sleeping, hines, benjamin netanyahu, and is really government. absolutely. i mean, we know from public opinion research that between 70 and 80 percent of americans use largely self identified as liberal and vote democrat in american elections. what we're seeing in is role right now is antithetical to those values. so we are
9:42 pm
seeing voices in american jewish leadership and on the streets here, coming out not to undo their support for israel, but to change what it actually means to support the israel, that they know and love to support the israel that we know. and love means to oppose what this government is doing now for myself and for many supporters of the new israel fund. it goes far beyond this. do this, do just judicial to we believe that there can be no democracy while there's occupation. we believe in equal rights for all. but what is right in front of us, all of us who are watching and all of us who are there on the ground, is an unprecedented act against democracy. and so we are seeing an outpouring of voices from north america and from around the world and including on the streets in
9:43 pm
israel against this traditional to just very briefly. this is only the 1st part of a series of proposals that are going to be put forward in terms of changing the legal process. what are your expectations for democracy in israel? should they all be accepted an old go ahead a well, i think what we're seeing on the street is that large parts of the is really population are not going to stand for these kinds of changes. and so if this 1st peg, this 1st legislative peg is any indication, i think we are looking at big struggles ahead. and i want to say that while today's news may have sent shock waves through some parts of the world, it, this is not the time to despair. those of us who want to see israel thriving as a democracy needs to take this opportunity for organizing the broadest possible
9:44 pm
coalition on the ground and around the world that we tend to defeat these extreme right wing elements. from my perspective, we need to expand what that pro democracy camp looks like to include all those people living in israel and under israel's control and all the people who support them. but right now the 1st step is to and and do some of the harm. that's already being planned and, and that has already been voted in today, the related things cuz we appreciate your being with us on how to 0. thank you very much indeed for your time. thank you for having me. as soon as i bombed lost in somalia as killed at least 30 people and wounded dozens, including army troops, the bomber targeted a cue of young men of the military training camp in the capital of morgan issue. the i'm group i'll show about which is linked to all how you to his claims responsibility. malcolm web is the latest. the survivors say
