but the young generation is determined to own its future. no matter it's different . a rock or a dispute on say, a student at the politician tackled age old issues with their powerful new voice. witness the fight for greenland on a jersey the wolf criminal charges against donald trump. this time over the capital riots and assets to overturn the 20 twenty's us presidential election. despite all the indictments, he remains the funds, the one that's a winning the republican nomination. so what does the new charges means as i'm fission is to return to the white house and for americans, this is inside story, the hello welcome to the program. i'm adrian sending
2:31 pm
a donald trump's legal problems are piling up fast with. do you have another indictment? this time from events onto the election, he lost a job 5 and 3 years ago. trump remains the hot favorite within the republican party to win the nomination to run again for president next year. but so far, the more challenges the faces, the loud or his claims of persecution resonate with his support base. what i'm decided us most as think all the time and the outcome of the election. and whether or not trump makes it back into the white house. before we talk to, i guess, let's take a closer look at what the latest charges are. he's accused of a conspiracy to defraud the united states. the standards from what prosecute a say is a popped over time. the election results on false pretenses, along with the 6 co conspirators. trump is also charged with 2 counts of conspiracy to obstruct and official proceeding that relates to interfering with congress, confirming victory for jo, binding. the false count to is conspiracy against citizen writes that's interfering
2:32 pm
with the rise of americans to vote. and have that vote properly counted. these charges increase, the total trump faces to $78.00. they include illegally keeping classified information to this home, falsifying business records of a hush money payments to the out of film. actress toby daniels at 11 attempts to overturn the 2020 presidential election results in georgia. all white house correspondent, kimberly how could as follow trump on the campaign trail, added the white house to this. what is the twist in terms of his legal problems? he joins us now. kimberly, will these latest charges help or hinder? trump's bid for a 2nd time in the white house. in the short term, these are likely to help donald trump, because once again, what it does is it put donald trump's name in the forefront, in newscasts all across the united states, all around the world. it's injecting oxygen into his campaign for another term in
2:33 pm
the white house. and so this is very good news for donald trump is what he likes it's, it's given him headlines, but of the long term it could be detrimental because what this is doing is time consuming for donald trump. he has yet another legal battle to fight. it is distracting, and it's also sucking money away from the war chest if you will. these are all the battles that he has to 5, and it's a battle that is distracting from the battle. he was to be fighting against joe biden for the white house. and so ultimately, this is a problem for the man that wants to become president. once again, with all of these distractions, i suppose you could argue that the donald trump is unable to, to offer voters in the us. anything, anything new, however you could say the same for the president find, couldn't you? i mean, how, how does the, i suppose as feel about
2:34 pm
a binding trump pre match in many ways? and i think you can tell by these candidates what they're offering. but it doesn't really matter who the candidate is. the american public has already made their mind up is that americans are democrat or republican regardless of who the candidate is . and so, and the fact that these are the choices is really evidence of that. and the reality is, is that the people are voting really for their party more than their candidates. and so the fact is that many people who don't particularly like donald trump, but they're voting for the republican leader. and that is true also of joe biden. and joe biden was very popular when he was the vice president under brock obama. but that's not necessarily true now. in fact,
2:35 pm
he has about the same popularity is donald trump, what he was an office and, and we really seen the deterioration of joe biden. well, he's been in office, he's made many gaps. he is not really likable in the same way that he was. he's it, he's stumbling more. and so really there's not a lot to offer the voters this time around and the economy is struggling. people don't feel like they're doing better, they're not better than they were 4 years ago. and in fact, when it comes to bite and nomics, the thing that he is rounding is his big sort of salable thing to the american voter. well, and that's not really flattering to the president either, given the fact that we've now had finch down rating, be the american economy and, and really sort of the from aaa status down to a plus. and that doesn't really mean they into the ordinary american. but the
2:36 pm
bottom line is, do you have another signal that things aren't rate for the american economy? so really what this says is that neither president or former president is really a good catch if you will. if this is the dating game. the bottom line is that americans are really just loading for their party and they really don't. they're there once again, just as we had in 2016, the best of the bad options. our white house correspondent kelly, how get that manufacture date. kimberly so let's bring it, i guess, from washington dc. we're joined by adolfo franko, a republican party strategist, and for the advisor to send us john mccain. from main, we're joined by adam kevin stein who has a pop up a little from adams doc and comments time, which specializes in government investigations and also in washington dc. rheanna shaw, a political strategist, full. i'm a senior aides republican members of congress at godaddy with as many thanks and
2:37 pm
data that let's uh, turn to adolfo. uh 1st uh, trump's been a joy to 3 times now has been investigated as we headed down several other fronts. he says, tuesdays, indictment is quite the latest corrupt check chapter to metal with the 2024 presidential election on positive on the american which hunts. let's break that down for a moment, but also all the charges against him and the timing of them politically motivated. absolutely. right, the president, president, trump is absolutely correct a couple things just to begin. first of all, let's talk about the timing and i'm glad you asked about that question. every time there has been news, significant news on the fight, and finally, corruption syndicate and 100 bite and significant. for example, devon adams was a key witness of this week regarding the data. alligators abiding family
2:38 pm
corruption every time there's one of these incidents. we either have a new indictment, or we have a, some cases, a, an amended indictment to try to take the new cycle. to change away from the hunter vitamin bite and present a binding of corruption allegations away from the, from the, from the headlines in the united states. so the timing, it is curious. if you look at the timeline, we don't have time of the program. each one of these cases has been a run, a major buying event, adventure and say there's another indictment coming in, fulton county, and it will be timed again when there's a hunter, vitamin, or president biden corruption story. that's the 1st 2nd we actually, this is what a weapon ization. every one of these indictments has been brought by either democratic elected prosecutors, democratic pointed prosecutors, or the average of the justice department, which is controlled by pressing a button and attorney general. and garland has a political appointee in the case of jack smith to be clear,
2:39 pm
he is not an independent counselor to the special counsel. so therefore his actions, including these are altered by the justice department. so this is something on precedent for american history. and we have, we have a situation where a present at a former president is being prosecuted by his political opponents, by using the machinery of the government. and that should be a truly and concern for every single american, a adolfo, out of adam and re and reno itching to, to get into this. but i just put what put one, a more point to you will. hood who is another potential republican dominey for those who don't know, he said the trump is unfit for office, but his presidential bid is an attempt to stay out of prison and scam his supporters into paying his legal bills as republicans. he said, we need to prioritize offering solutions to difficult issues affecting all americans. if we make the upcoming election about to trump, we're giving joe by another 4 years of the white house. i mean, trump has nothing new to offer votes as does he well, he absolutely does. he has
2:40 pm
a continuation of his excellent policies for the last, for between 2016 and in 2020 any american i would hope every american will be asked . are you better off today as president reagan asked and you were 4 years ago, and the answer is no. as your report are indicated earlier about by dynamics, which is a disaster and, and the president present of the items by hand out on americans. odd americans at least better off now to bite, and then they were when trump was in office, they're actually worse off under present or buying anybody who goes to the grocery store or public asked or has their real wages reduced in any, in any of the analysis that are done, they were better off under under president trump for absolutely president trump is offering a better solution. but little heard, by the way, when he made those comments, he was roundly bowed by republicans when he made those comments, a person who was absolutely less than one percent approval and the republican party . so you're talking and anybody can make a critic, anyone can kind of make
2:41 pm
a headline. this is not present of use of the vast majority of the republicans will continue to grow and support the present abiding president. trump support continues to grow among republicans because of this protocol persecution. okay. all right, rena, i'm adult for the echoing what, how speaker kevin? because he's the coffee set about uh, honda bites and, and, and what sort of governor on desantis said about what the zation of the federal government. what, what do you make of what you just had as well? what, which one could argue right now is that this trend towards using our agencies are independent judiciary as sort of a, you know, fighter for saying we are being victimized. that's what i hear right now when republicans cry out about the webinar. ization of the department of justice and, and look, this can be traced back to them. listen at listening to james, call me and, and talking about hillary clinton, when we talk about the election right now, where we stand with the price and guided former president. we're in
2:42 pm
a very unique moment in history. and so i think we have to understand sort of the conditions we're under right now. we're in be era grievance politics. we also are in the era of voters and building against someone instead of for someone. and we saw that in 2016, we saw people vote for trump as a vote against hillary clinton. and now also one thing to really consider here is how trump is doing his campaign this time around. there's been data released just this past week that shows that one in, for donors to trump, campaign is a retiree. and then also the small donations are all largely going towards helping with his legal bills. it's only a matter of time until that money sort of runs out and can't help his campaign efforts and has to continue helping his legal effort. so these are the conditions under which this candidacy, this very unique candidacy of the former presents is, is operating under and then you've got all these sort of what would be called establishment republicans,
2:43 pm
people with long resumes and public service saying that they're better than him hoping looking for the entry way through which they can make the case of the american pop. busy that joe biden shouldn't get another chance of the white house. now i see it this way. we have a very short set of time and so. busy we start to see more be independent voters. it's certain factor in right now in these polls. and in much of these audiences that these g o, p primary candidates are going to, you're seeing a lot of the most extreme part of the republican party show up. you're seeing them sort of served in support or you're seeing people who are gonna stick with the standard bearer no matter what the, what's out there and the vote to capture in order to win the white house. not just did you primary is that independently minded? suburban boat, or in a swing state, and a lot of these are women, and a lot of these women are to have a hard time stomach age. many of the decisions happening in republican lead speed houses across the country of origin is going to factor in far bigger of an issue.
2:44 pm
then present. biden son hunter by then. so we have to talk about these things in a way in which we understand that these are big issues here out of to do with it. but, you know, we were discussing whether these charges against trump, r as a republican site, politically motivated all day or is, is this just the wheels of american justice in motion? where electrical cycles on who might be running for what office of whatever time. but don't really matter. yeah, thank you for having me. uh, i think the suggest that these charges are political is, is somewhat preposterous if you read these indictments and you are all familiar with the american justice system. you know, trump famously said when he announced his candidacy or shortly after announced his candidacy back in 2016 that he could get somebody on 5th avenue and get away with it. and i think that's, you know, metaphorically, what we're seeing play out here is a former federal prosecutor that's tried more criminal cases than i can count. i
2:45 pm
can tell you the, the, the indictments here and the evidence alleged is absolutely overwhelming. i wish i had anywhere near this much evidence in the criminal cases that i tried, and that's not just my perspective. that's the perspective on these cases from republicans that serve in his administration. i think it was the attorney general bill bar trump appointees served as his attorney general and was ministration upon reading the dean's. i then in the, the, the other case with the, the, the records of since the espionage application called the trunk toast. a others are sitting, there's no me smoking going here with the smoking arsenal. it's just an absolutely staggering amount of evidence in both cases, whether it's a direct witness testimony,
2:46 pm
his own statements being audio recorded video surveillance. it goes on and off. so it looks at the law wasn't just created, the laws that he's charged with weren't just created in the past year to these laws have been around for a very long time. and the fast, the give rise to these charges were created by trump. so, you know, you've got to existing laws, criminal laws, and you've got criminal conduct by trump, you put the 2 together and that gets you indicted and that's what's going on here. but, but i'm out of how, how does the american justice system rise above all of this, this political month from that's going on of the accusations against it, but it is being politically weaponized. yeah, i'm sorry. you cut out a little bit, but i think i heard the question, look, it's incumbent upon the department of justice and the prosecutors to proceed a pace without regard to the politics of, of the day. and that's what they're doing. so you're going to have the political partisans make what they want to make about these charges. the republicans are
2:47 pm
going to defend trump with the democrats. they're going to use them against trump. and that's just, you know, that's just the way of the world. what jack smith and his team, the department of justice have to do is proceed without regard without fear or favor with respect to trumps of the presidential campaign. and just proceed as they wouldn't let me uppercase. and that's what i believe they're doing at all what, what do you make of, of what you had just these judges api. so you know, politically motivated. all right, let me unpack a lot of but those guess that 1st of all, rena independent judiciary was talking about to dish, or we were talking about prosecutors and they have discretion, and they're political individuals with the professor should note that every one of these has been either a democratic pointy for 8 and elect a democrat as bringing these these prosecutions. this indictment is absolutely ridiculous on its face. it is the january 6th report, with some will missions,
2:48 pm
and i'll tell you the important emotions that were made. it is a she showing a tactical gear. she does, we have an independent judiciary was meet the difference between a rena. let me finish. yes. if i go there different between the surgery and the checked me and you're, you're trying to describe what i said about an independent judiciary. we have an antibiotic to do here in this country. it's supporters of trump like you that keeps saying that's a democrat, that's a republican, that's a democrat. that's probably why the response of july interrupt you ever just did i interrupt only inject me. okay. okay. let me check the make, make it black. yeah. q, the independent you the us. okay. like where do we come from the model we prime allowed display con participant the he always knew the fact that we cannot have the listen. you continue, you continue,
2:49 pm
you can give you the program without means you not that me, you the here. so i don't fingerprint over that and we can't talk over each other at adolfo as usual. okay, so we'll book it, read it. just just make your point quickly and we'll go back to item. it always brings up people's parties and strikes. when he talks about the judiciary, you'll see that that's a trend. the republicans are going towards. but in our constitution, in regarding documents, we have an independent judiciary in this country. and you see this is a reflection of how americans of los trust in our institutions. and this is something that happened very rapidly under the fall. it didn't start with trump, but it's something he has really benefit from. and i think judge eileen canning in florida who had trumps other case. she wasn't as, as i let me put it this way, defend as hard as this next judge is going to be assigned this indictment case of the 3rd indictment because this amount of ball a vomit pointed jobs. so you'll see republicans bring this up over and over, and it's really hard for the country because we are, again,
2:50 pm
we have an independent judiciary in this country. out of could trump face jail time if convicted on any of these charges, you're gonna have to explain to, to those of us who aren't familiar with the, the way that the american justice system works. the way that the political system was kind of, he's still a campaign or take office if he's a criminal defendant. is there a president here, or all we in uncharted territory and what happens if he's convicted but wins on a windows on his den convicted? yeah, look, there's nothing in the constitution that prevents somebody under indictment, somebody on trial, or even somebody convicted from running for and holding office in this country. the only thing that we prevent donald from, from taking office or remaining an office would be if he was impeached by the congress. so you know, i think trump's legal strategy here because he knows and his attorneys know that
2:51 pm
the evidence is overwhelming is so is legal defense strategies to be elected president and you know, either either himself or in part of himself, excuse me. um, were you know, hopefully uh in his mind, uh, a republican that's uh, you know, favorable to him we'll get elected and pardon him like for did with nixon. but it is defense strategy at this point is exclusively when the presidency and part of himself. because barring that in all likelihood, he would be convicted based on the evidence in these case, okay, anything is convicted on all of the but the charges of the faces he could face present time but, but it could also just be fined instead of any but, but how would you put a full, the president in prison? a look, you know? no one's above the law. that's one of the bedrock principles in this country. you hear a lot about these charges and they talked about statutory,
2:52 pm
maximum prison terms. those are kind of, you know, do not exceed numbers in reality, but they're not really how, how sentences are fashion sentences or fashion by what are called the united states sentencing guidelines. they kind of inform the judge of, of the appropriate sentence based on a whole host of factors about the case and the defendant's background. and then on top of that, the judges have a pretty broad degree of discretion in fashioning and appropriate sentence. they can succeed with the statutory maximum sentences are under the, under the but the criminal laws that the defendants convicted of. and in this case, you know, there consecutive, and when you have them all, you know, you're talking, you know, the 10s of decades of years. but again, that's not how does it have an incentive, just going to be under the guidelines and the discretion of the judge. but when you look at the cases here, the crime is that he's charged with an a condo, that he's a list to have committed in all likelihood,
2:53 pm
if he is convicted of either of these 2 cases, he will be sentenced to some term of imprisonment. that's, you know, it would be extraordinary if he wasn't that it would probably be very appealable by the government if, if he wasn't sentenced to a terminal imprisonment. how's he done it? how, how does, how do you use a sentence or form or present to present the answer your question. just like the sentence, any other defendant right now you heard us talking to our white house correspondent that way back at the beginning of the program and she was making the point. so do you have you dialed republicans? you have you. if you died in the will the democrats, but it is the motor and independent versus who, who going to the site the next presidential election? i mean, if it is a trump biking free match and that then not faced with much of a choice all day, i mean what, what, what are they going to do to? well, we'd like to think we have a multi party system here, but truly we have a 2 party system. and so people do choose the major party when it comes time to elect the president and they get behind it. but more and more americans are feeling
2:54 pm
like these parties don't represent them. look at our congressional approval ratings . they continue to go down year after year. we even feel like are elected representative sitting in congress don't represent us. so partisan stripes aside a by then trump 3 matchers release like those. one thing for the country is that we're in truly charter territory to have octogenarians serving the white house when the retirement age on coast to coast in the country is anywhere between $61.00 to $67.00 is just, i believe, nonsensical. i'm an advocate of term limits, but again, i'm also a really big believer in, in following the constitution. i don't believe in a lot abolishing the electoral college. i believe our founding fathers didn't think we would have leaders this old, but it's where we are. so it's incumbent upon the parties to do better, and i see the r and c doing something unique. this time, the art teacher wanted, mcdaniel has introduced that pledge. she's introduced criteria in the form of money or polls. and in certain polls you have to pull it
2:55 pm
a certain percent. she doesn't want these vanity tendencies to become really part and parcel with how we do politics, particularly from the republican side today. so i think that's quite unique. on the democrats side, you see biden's the guy, but who is 100 feet away from the presidency? and as kamala here, she still has record high levels of disapproval. there are many americans who are very nervous about hairs presidency, again, a heartbeat away. so i think what we'll see leading up to next year is biden, and trump are on the ballot. you will see americans vote against one or the other. at a we, we thought that the january 6th was, was an incredibly dangerous moment to for the, the us things don't seem to go much, much better since then. even though they are a little comma. how dangerous some of it is. this for us democracy, do you think, or i think it's a very dangerous moment. we're living and you know, very dangerous times to the in particular, you know,
2:56 pm
given the kind of reactionary tribalism on both sides. but, but, you know, you see this was trauma. supporters is use core base day after day is like fast, just don't get through right. there is a point of view about what is going on in this country and about this incitement. that is, it's just immutable. and if the truck is convicted and if they believe, you know those, if they're not persuaded by evidence that is presented at trial and it doesn't look like anything would persuade them if he so he's convicted and you're going to have a lot of angry people. and, you know, a good chunk of these people have hardly shown a proclivity towards violence. so i think that, you know, following a conviction, we are very likely to see at least the types of violence, of our government has been prepared for it. and if the, if the, if the media explains it and, and, uh, you know, with the internet today and what can be, uh, you know,
2:57 pm
broadcast on that and the ability to, to assemble and all those things. it just creates a very combustible situation. so it, you know, i think it's a, i think you're frightening time, right? we know we've got about a minute left to do your thoughts on that. or, you know, i, i think we are in an area of political violence feeling like it's the norm. but i think after january 6, 2021, and these are federal level leaders have, have taken it very seriously. we know political extremism is on the rise, but there are ways to counter it. and i think also in the state house, as you see, people taking it very seriously. there's so much miss information. this information is going to get ramped up as we get towards in general election day 2024. but i do see there are some really bright spots here for american democracy and a former president who is now private citizen by, by for each of our dog or guiding document the constitution. he is being held accountable under the full weight of the law. and again, is up and down guilty. and indictment is an accusatory document. so let's see where this goes. but i do think it is an important day yesterday was
2:58 pm
a very historic and important day for democracy because it shows that with just a just as accountability has to come hand in hand. my things to both read a shot and adam comments time for being part of the program today. my thanks also to adolfo franco, who, who left his uh, half way through as always, uh, thank you for watching. you can see the program again at any time by going to the website that was a 0 dot com for further discussion join us at our facebook page. you'll find that at facebook dot com forward slash h a inside story out. of course, you can join the conversation on twitter handle at a j inside story from me, adrian for it again. and the team here. thanks for watching. we'll see you again the the
