12:00 pm
on a weekly look at the world's top business stories from global markets to economies and a small business sales force and including security around the world. is there something that the international community, your view should be doing to understand how it affects? counting the cost on o g, a 0 the of the colorado. now this is the news i live from the coming up in the next 60 minutes. a ceasefire has taken effect between israel and i'm us off to 48 days of relentless bombardment in gaza. is there any forces that phone to cease fall line and trying
12:01 pm
to stop palestinians returning to their homes in northern garza, the rough cross it goes. i've been out of students who was stuck in egypt making their way back to gaza. all those wounded off hitting to each women and children held, and he's ready to jail. so set to be free later as part of the cx, 5 deal. while the families of these really captives housing cars or wait for news of the the $8.00 oh $9.00 under g n t. that's 11. am in gaza with a cease 5 between israel and come off. has been in effect for 4 hours now. it's brought some respite for palestinians who've been do it almost 7 weeks of relentless is riley bombardment. the streets of con eunice in southern gaza, a busy. it's the 1st opportunity people have had to move around without the threat
12:02 pm
of is really strikes since october. the 7th. a little off i bought a crossing with egypt has been opened trucks carrying much needed to monitoring either entering the strip of the truck slipping refueling on the egyptian side and bringing fuel into a 1000 people who had been stuck in egypt. ta, returning to gaza while those wounded. i'm going the other way for treatment and he is what we're expecting to happen in the coming hours. as i mentioned, a safe spot in both northern and southern gaza is in effect. these really military says troops will stay behind behind a circled cx. 5 line inside garza, i'm us will release the 1st group of 13, these red captives at 4 pm local time. that's $1400.00 gmc, they are, is riley, women, and children. the 1st of 50 captives who are due to be released under the deal. the red cross will escalate them to the rough i've bought of crossing with egypt and
12:03 pm
hand them over to these ready ministry which will begin the identification process . the captives will then be taken to hospitals in tel aviv and basheba for physical and psychological examinations for its bodies. rel, will release $59.00 of the $150.00 palestinian prison is due to be freed. under the terms of the deal. they will be moved from to his reading jails, the heifer to the of the prison south of ramallah in the occupied westbank. then they will be taken to a nearby crossing and handed over to the families in the villages of areas that they come from. and as we had the rough crossing administration says, humanitarian aid has already begun. entering garza from egypt, moss says $200.00 trucks of aid and few will enter daily during the cx 5. now we have a team of correspondence, keeping us across full developments in the occupied territories and 11 on where there's been cross board or 5 with these ro during the war. we can begin with
12:04 pm
a topic i will assume who's in con eunice, topic, how things looking on the streets. uh, the way you uh, it must be an extraordinary sensation. now the guns are full and silent, but people can just about begin to go about the business without fear. yes, a completely new situation on the ground right now. of course the gaza strip. i've been particular in the south of the territory and so i knew this and even a rough district for palestinians went through the streets in order to return back again to the houses where a number of residents started to get boxed in order to reach the destroyed houses, or at least to check on that in order to see what happened to the majority of areas that they were living inside in the north and east central areas above the city. what is absolutely new and this uh to spice. that is very occupation forces during
12:05 pm
the last couple of hours have opened the file over a resident against the residents were fleeing and through trying to return back again to the houses. we're an impulse. palestinians have been shields and a half inches and so they are not receiving good treatments on the top of the same hospitals. meanwhile, people in this house of gauze is checked to complete. you suffer from the diet humanitarian situation that they have been in for more than 7 weeks of fighting. and absolutely, they want to return back again to the houses too, in order to at least to look for beloved ones who have been stopped under the ruffles. as there are more than $2500.00 college students are still missing under the record. meanwhile, the, even in this situation and indeed not for hospital right now. the number of people has been decreased as every one from the displaced residents have taken the packages and they just went out to check the houses. so literally posting and were
12:06 pm
waiting this the supply in order to return back again to the house. as i'm at the growing danger of the possibility of being attacked by these many forces who are still stationed on the ground. they are taking full control over the 2 main link. he rose between the north and the south of gaza strip tonic. presumably that blindfolded by these rallies will prevent people from moving to the north. so as you say, trying to find the remains of relatives under the rubble trying to return to their destroyed homes. how is that going to make people feel? does that add to the sense of despair perhaps add a sense of disappointment to what she would otherwise be hopeful time a yes. some people managed to get to the houses which could be away a little bit from the bustles those while other people may be deprived, especially the people who are still in the south of the gaza strip. and they are
12:07 pm
trying to get to the news of the church or, or to the central areas as the is what is most of us patient in an area that is blessing. that when the, i know the south and the are even having an active movement of is really mental treat tanks. of course the main to raise as they are using different kinds of methods in order to practice down. because the benefits of the leading to the tools of the territory as are using the just kind of boost to be fired from time to another against the residents. they open fire on the last couple of hours they helps august the some residents will try to easily treat move to the no small territory. and what is it also important to mention is that there is a complete absence of the east valley which rose in deep in the southern parts of the territory. but meanwhile, the active movements on the ground troops continued. palestinians generally have i, if they have been prevented to reach the houses, defense or frustration will be excessive pages and will grow more as you would like
12:08 pm
at least to check on the houses because they are financially broken. they have no proper shelter to remain in, and at least they would like to feel that their houses are still a still not being destroyed, at least in order to find a shooter that off to the end of the will. they might be a roommate or a state in as the destruction of gaza strip continues. okay, kind of will leave it there for the time being. conduct a zoom inside gauze or across in con eunice. this thanks for your your thoughts and we move now to the occupied westbank where of course there is a sense of anticipation as well because the palestinian prisoners who are due to be released as part of the supply deal will be released into the west bank. they come up from the west bank and in the west bank is zane bus robbie standing by to tell us more about the sense of families there is a is they anticipate the release later today of a number of,
12:09 pm
of their loved ones. tell us about that. tell us about the technicalities of the release. how will it happen and where will they go? well, what we know with regards to the procedures, we know that the red cross will be involved. we know that the prisoners that are, are in jails inside israel proffer will be brought to offer prison. we've been hearing that some of them have been informed that are beginning to pack up their belongings to begin the journey into the prison in the occupied westbank. the offer prison and from there they will be released. and when they are the walk through a check point and cross into occupied wes bags and be greeted by palestinian officials. but what we also know is that none of the families who are expecting to have their relatives released the number in the hundreds. none of them know for certain or nor have they've been informed whether their relatives names are on the list of this initial batch of 39. we do know that the palestinian authority has received the finalized list that they have those names. but we're also hearing that
12:10 pm
that may not be the final list we're hearing that may not be the exact list of the palestinians we're hoping for. so this kind of uncertainty hangs over every thing it hangs over all of the families here. and in this number's game, the, the hopes of people that are hoping to see their families today that begins to dwindle a little more with every hour. that passes the number of $39.00 in this 1st batch is held up against the grand total of $7000.00. 200 people in is rarely custody. the initial list of names only numbered in a few 100 will down to 39. the people we've been speaking to in the last few days say that they still don't know anything. they're watching for local news reports. they're trying to communicate with who they can. but that the agony of uncertainty is, is basically completely consuming of everything at the moment. one of those said of a teenage boy who was meant to be released a child that she is happy, but it is bitter sweet because he's already completed 12 of a 13 month sentence. so you can describe feeling like is rarely as of already
12:11 pm
extracted all of the punishment they can in his case, he'll be happy to see him, but it does come at a time when they've already rob zoom of a year of his young life. now all of this happens in the backdrop of is really military and police being deployed to towns and villages across the occupied westbank, where these people are expected to return to their homes. to stop any home come home coming related celebrations, penny, public display of joy would be seen as bad press from the as rarely perspective. so they will be clamping down on any public celebrations. again, bringing pressure to bear, you know, even at a time like this big bringing pressure to bear on palestinian communities in the occupied territories. keeping that pressure on these communities even as they are hoping to see family members released in the coming hours. okay, so i know we'll be coming back to you later in the show, but we'll leave it there with you for now and from occupied east jerusalem. we move
12:12 pm
from occupied west bank raw the we moved to the oak occupied east wrist whim. i meant june is standing by with mohammed the is riley perspective on all of this is, is it possible to talk about a sense of, of relief in is ro as well people there, perhaps a happy note on the, to, to be hearing the sound of sirens. to be facing the threat of rocket 5 from gaza for the next 4 days. is any of that penetrating well donated certainly something that we've been hearing from officials in israel over the course of the last few days. as we started nearing the deadline for the ceasefire, more and more unnamed is really officials were being quoted in his really publications . various media outlets expressing confidence in that vis ceasefire would actually take hold yesterday throughout the day. because there had been that one day delay, you had official saying that yes,
12:13 pm
there were some last minute pick ups. but we are certain that we will get over these hurdles and that everything will eventually culminate in this cease fire. and that's something we've continued to hear from these officials. so there has been this sense of cautious optimism over the course of the last few days. now look, we've not heard of any public polling or any surveys that have been done since it was announced that those captives would start being released today. so we're not privy to any public opinion yet, but there is a collective sort of sigh of relief that we are getting indications of when it comes to how is really officials are speaking. and what we're seeing when it comes to members of the public being quoted in various media reports. now i should mention that that's one thing when you talk about the public. but it's something quite different when you talk about the relatives of those captives who are set to be released. because over the course of the past few weeks, you've seen more and more demonstrations happening. relatives of captives held in
12:14 pm
gaza, of israelis held in gaza, who were very upset with how they perceive the government to be handling, trying to secure the release of their loved ones. just this past week you had a 4 day march that started in tell of even culminated in jerusalem. thousands of people essentially calling on the government to do more because they were worried that the government wasn't doing enough to secure the release of those captive. so now certainly from those family members who been notified that at least their relatives are on that 1st list, that initial list, that's 13 is really is that are set to be released at 4 pm local. obviously they are going to be very relieved other relatives of captors and gaza have told is really media outlets. it's been a roller coaster of emotions yesterday. throughout the day we saw quotes for many relatives saying that they were concerned that the process might break down entirely. they were worried what was going to happen to their relative so it's a lot of mixed emotions. but one more thing i need to add, jonah, is the fact that usually in a time of war, a conventional political wisdom in israel is that a prime minister gets
12:15 pm
a boost out of that. that public opinion starts swing in their direction. their poll numbers go up, that has not been the case since october 7, since that massive intelligence failure that led to the attack by how much on israel. in fact, what we've seen a survey after survey indicating that there was broad support by the israeli public for the military, for the military campaign in gaza. and there is this rallying around the flag effect that is still happening. but when it comes to how prime minister benjamin netanyahu is doing well, trust in his leadership and his phone numbers at all time, record low as they have plummeted. so he seems to be in political peril right now. a lot of stuff will depend on how he handles the release of these captives in the days to come. he's got a bit of political danger. he's facing internal divisions, not just from the opposition who called on him to resign, some of them, but also from some members of his own cabinet who been upset that he agreed to allow fuel into gaza just small amounts even. so there's a lot going on right here. it's
12:16 pm
a moving situation. it's been very fluid and dynamic right now. indications are that is really citizens, as well as really officials are happy that the ceasefire has actually started. and that they are just cautiously optimistic and waiting to see what will be happening in the days to come, jonah. but while the big moment obviously comes back to today, as you've been discussing the, with the release of some sort of team captains, we expect, uh, that will be the ultimate test of the, your ability of this for the cx. 5 for many other families. of course the white will go on, you talked about nothing. yeah. who's poll numbers the, what his opinion polling saying low about how he's riley's generally feel about the idea of returning to a full scale war in 4 days time. if a more families have not been united with the loved ones more than those contained in the deal, the general we expected in the coming 24 to
12:17 pm
48 hours. we will start seeing more opinion polls being released, surveys being done, and we have not yet seen any of those being released. but so far in survey after survey, when the is really public has been told they are fully behind the military. they are fully behind the military action in gaza. and it's been interesting to observe the israeli officials over the course of the past few days, essentially giving 2 different narratives about what can happen when it comes to guys. on the one hand, you have people like the defense minister, you'll have a lot to even last night, came out and reiterated the theme that he had set in the past, which is that after the ceasefire that the world will continue. and he went even further. he said that they will go on for at least another 2 months until they achieve their goals of destroying how much and returning all the captains. but then on the other hand, you have is really government officials who have been quoted anonymously in various media outlets over the course of the past few days. many of them expressing great
12:18 pm
enthusiasm about the fact that they believe that this cease fire will be extended. some of them have even said that they believe it will be extended up to 10 days. now they have said that this is and really how much is court that it depends if how much is willing to release more of those captives. but they have expressed optimism that this process will continue. so you have some official saying this war is going to keep going and the public needs to be prepared for that. and they've also said that it was a difficult decision to accept the terms of the ceasefire. but these were the best deals, the best conditions at this time, and they needed to do it. and then you have other officials for saying, hey, what's happening right now is good. we're optimistic and we think this is going to last longer than 4 days. so kind of all over the map right now. obviously a lot of stuff going on behind the scenes. lot of diplomacy, there is a lot of pressure, as we mentioned on the prime minister, the public, it seems right now is receptive to receiving these messages. but as far as where exactly their opinion is, are on the specific issues, we just haven't seen concrete details yet emerge. and numbers and statistics as to
12:19 pm
where public opinion falls specifically the jona. okay. most drums room and talk about east jerusalem with the ease riley perspective. thanks for that low. and we take you now to provide to get it to james base. who's here in the catawba capital . downtown dough ha, we're close. the deal was broke. good. james is joining us live. thanks for being with us. james. it's a huge achievement. clearly getting to this point at all after almost 7 weeks of the war, a deal mediated by category negotiators with the help of egypt in the united states . of course, what happens now in the cx 5 period to diplomatic efforts, because unlike the guns james diplomacy present and presumably will not full solemn i know diplomacy certainly doesn't full silent. and the countries who have been the lynch pin of these diplomatic efforts. but as you say,
12:20 pm
very much involved with egypt, which is the a as the country which is right beside gauze which controls the gates. the aide is going to gauze, i'm the united states capital as has put in efforts in 4 weeks for this, but the assets, i think take a new full now they'll be pleased. i think i'm now to see that we're beginning to get some momentum because that simple, the whole idea of this is a stage process where one side sees benefits, then the other side sees benefits and then that keeps this process going on potentially more than full days. so i think the initial efforts of the guitar is, and of those here in doha, where there's an operations room set up will be to avoid any violations. and even if they're all violations of the country for ministry, say in that operations room, they have real time links with homeless, real time links with these riley millet trays. so if there is a problem, they hope they can fix it without bringing down the hold of this temporary c spot.
12:21 pm
then you get to big diplomacy going forward. and the us side would like to see this going beyond 4 days, because the us a kaz about guessing the captives, how mice and all the groups and garza, i have at the moment getting as many of them out as possible bots. of course, remember the us position is the same as these randy position with regard to the wider war of the us believes that israel has the right to defend itself and it supports israel and it's a which is to completely destroy him. us and his resume. he cleared that that's nowhere near happened yet. so down the line, we all despite distress by, despite hopefully in the coming as some relief for some of the families on both sides. we have the spect, uh, of the return of that immense bombardment by israel on the horizon. i can see talked about that operations room, possibly not far from where you're standing with. cuz catherine negotiates as have
12:22 pm
were told and open real time a line to both these writers and to come off in the event of any breaches of the cease fire a tool. let's talk about points of tension. let's talk about stumbling blocks potentially in the coming for days. let's talk about the things that could bring this deal down as well. any sort of military violation to start with any sort of following any sort of broke it far. that would be a potential problem. there all the areas that they think they've done a deal on, but they could be problematic in terms of the surveillance that's carried out by israel. there's an agreement not to fly drones for 6 hours a day. if that was a breach of that, potentially it could be a problem. i think israel will be somewhat concerned about the surveillance carried
12:23 pm
out by how mass as well and what they will glean during this period. israel has already made it clear. it doesn't want a mass movement to people, they've taken great efforts, and they say it was for their own safety, but they taking great great efforts to clear much of noise and garza of its population and it doesn't want. i don't think those people to start to return. busy home, so these are all potential trouble areas and the situation right movement remains extremely front job and the situation like this one false move could see a counter reaction from the other side, a complete collapse of everything. and i think that hopefully that that doesn't happen. and at least they get the 1st exchange of the captives. how? by how mass going up to the is riley side. i'm the 1st exchange of palestinian prisoners. returning to the homes of the west bank. they heard that of the one
12:24 pm
round of that that will bring a little bit of trust, perhaps into this process, and then to see the next list for pad, for the next 24 hours of what is supposed to be a full day process. but as i say, the category of mediators and others are hoping that that will be a possibility to extend this beyond 4 days. well, the time being one day at a time, james pays out diplomatic edits in the thanks for that. but the more in gaza is threatening to destabilize the reach. the lebanese group has paula and humans cruces have increased the tax on these ro, in response to the war and casa, they know how to ease even they route. thanks for joining us. zayna, they've been phases of a regional escalation since the will began, of course, for now, efforts to be relatively successful to contain that, but not without significant tensions on the border between these route and leveling on uh,
12:25 pm
how is the cx 5 being viewed the well, for the time being there is quiet along the border, the israel 11 on border was not included in the text that sees fire agreements between as well have mass, but it has the source has told us that they would be ready to hold fire if, as well as here's to the truth and the israeli army spokesman saying that they will respond to the threats when the rest emerge. so it seems that it's rarely army as well is ready to hold fire along that border. for 7 weeks, they have been exchanging fire. yes, the conflict has been, contains confined limited to a few kilometers on each side of the border, but many really have been worried about a possible escalation. no doubt, both sides also have been treading carefully. it is not in the interest of either side for a full blown conflict, it's a habit and hezbollah entered this conflict. unlimited engagement. if you like to help relieve his ally how my son garza but it has been deadly,
12:26 pm
its loss. nearly 19 men palestinian fighters also lost approximately 15 men along the border. civilians have been killed 14, including turn list to work directly targeted by the israeli army. so this has been a costly war even though confined to along the border. the is really defense minister making. it is clear that the, this temporary truce a few like a a following this truth. there will be, the conflict will resume and that's why many here are, are fearful for possible escalation. the iranian foreign minister was in baby was a few days ago. he too said that the conflict could expand across the region. if this cease fire doesn't hold. so really a loss at stake here. sorry to hold a thanks so much for bringing us the latest from lebanon. and we complete out tour of this incredibly complex story by taking you now back to the ground in gaza. what homes of abraham is a resident he lives in new site, right. what do you see?
12:27 pm
he's kind of saying in this out. thank you, holmes abraham for being with us. and i mean, give us a sense if you would from where you are right now of just how it feels in these 1st hours of a cease fire. when finally, the guns are full of solemn a yeah, thanks for having me here. i am right now in congress trade in the middle of dollars in, in embassy, this organization. right? so be in the people. i mean, the people here a few isn't showing because the was tongue temporary is so the and for cause you know, us that tuesday, the 2nd grade source of really you from the trace and the pain that people being when he leaves. and i'm going state of the bomb think at and gloss i mean and the, and we, we can totally assessor safety and piece of the into the,
12:28 pm
uh this and going on can bumping and on and on. and we can be really without conscious be or be killed or on displays. and um, as well, um, uh, restore the chip or springs you know, a normal life and the, and on the people and introduce you to can or go to uh to doing their tv to use. and on this at twos is achieving by restoring compatibility. compatibility of, of us as exam people, and that's really on there for a long time. and upon me to mean off for then i'm from for the month, i mean, and, and, and also, and when we can, i, you connect with of our family and we can go to, to,
12:29 pm
and our place that has been just that is truly biased. really is, is track, and i think it was even people here. we feel a mix, blank ear and with it between sadness and having this. and because on this, um not to me, it will be in office soon. and the question that the big one that awesome, so i'll throw that off the bat for you daily to cease. and by, i mean for these, it's not in off or rebuild cause i can and don't the people themselves that they are on has been destroyed by square the lands on there. um, i mean on the north, i mean were, is people gonna, what were this people gonna go up there is, um, naturally bozza. so we really feel
12:30 pm
a little bit so on journey. and elizabeth had this is we need more than for the to spire. so we need to, oh, or full, full time and we need um that, that, that, that how big asked for and also let me get you right now because uh, because uh, 2 hundreds of trucks. i mean being that comes from the ford is not, and i'll be need more of the car and we need to be on the same. we need $1000.00 so trucks to be re build thinking thoughts and we need one ear a more decades for be billed us. and. and so what do we feel tragically joy for bathrooms that have been announced in the news? comes abraham. you talk about returning to normal life that can surely be nothing like normal life on alpha in gaza at the moment. what are your
