4:00 pm
for a week, from the hall to the story, the squire hope has been diminished. their prayers continue with a situation to get into the the i'm for the back keyboard. this isn't use our own alger 0 live from to coming up in the next 60 minutes. is rouse latest victim a 6 year old boy dies of mine. nutrition in northern gaza, shot dead while waving white flags in both those videos. obtain biologist era show is really forces coming on on promising use in gas. also this, our worsening food shortages in democratic republic of congo,
4:01 pm
united nations and warrants of a disaster humanitarian crisis as the army battles, rebels, island wizard up a little in el salvador, outside of what was once considered one of the most dangerous neighborhoods in the country. we'll show you how all that changed just 2 short years. that's coming up on devin ash with the sports. we look at how he was olympic boxing team is 5. seems to make it to this. she has games in paris after being hit by the countries economic crisis. the thank you very much for joining us. we begin this news hour in guys where acute food shortages caused by israel as restrictions on age strikes is pushing starvation and bound nutrition to new depths. a 6 year old boy has become the latest to die stuff come out. i had one hospital in northern guys, i have name the child as mohammed name. i'm not sure. nearly 30 children have died
4:02 pm
of mine. nutrition senses are as well on guys have begun in october in central guys, a team of international doctors, helpings a palestinian stuff. i've been speaking out about the diet situation. they say medics out over well. little but most of the if it's kind of patients are lying in the core doors. when we go looking, we don't find rooms for the patients. they're all in the core doors. either on match is or blankets on the floor or a bed with the basic components. they're struggling a lot of the color. they will be at that these medical teams and cause are working hard. most of them have lost their children, their wives for their parents. but despite this, they're carrying on with their work and in 7 guys out of the policy, me and red crescent says 7 of its workers has been freed off to being detained for 47 days. the health workers were arrested by is really forces in a mob hospital in con units. that's one of 3 medical facilities currently beseeched
4:03 pm
. let's speak to was alcohol owed for us. his in jamalia in northern guys. i'm off . tell us about this latest victim. i tried the victim of mom nutrition in northern gas a 6 years old saw it just passed away this morning. because of a knowledge, malnutrition, a distorted was called the him a 9 a on the job. a, he's so far the from a severe, the little tradition. he's been 10 days and came out. it was one hospital. it was the trying to, uh, bring his life back end as you know, get his life as health a bit. but they couldn't because of the s a v shortage of uh in for the stuff and food materials here in the north of garza. and there is another case, a cold jenna and then come out of the hospital is suffering from the same uh,
4:04 pm
deceased that. so this smells nutrition uh, are reaching and precedents. let me see nothing because it, because it would be severe as cj can boast up into the city. and so i'll living and know who goes by. that is what it is. and these numbers uh, it continues to climb. so because of these as solving policies in bows, i'm going to buy this thing is here. one more thing, as you know, i'm understanding and, and, and in the market, the streets, which is, as you can see in the back around it, which is totally destroyed by that is what it is. uh, these souls were selling a food and uh, you know how i do materials and humanitarian uh, materials for the people. as you see, it's totally destroyed. thank you. thank you very much. my for bringing us uh,
4:05 pm
the latest on the situation in northern a guys uh with the humanitarian situation. of course, also the widespread destruction that you describe watch out a lot in jamalia northern gas. it air force is now speak to dr. tanya hodge. hassan, who is a pediatrician with medical aid for palestinians and she is one of the doctors who was in gossip very recent meet dr. tonya. very good to have you with us again. you know, just area on obviously are joining us from amman, a we've spoken many times over the last 2 months at talk to us about your experience through a recent experiencing garza and the situation in hospitals. there was it as bad as you imagined. it would be thank you fully. um, you know, i think i think i've said this too before in an interview, this is not a human attorney in crisis and there's no humanitarian solution to what's going on right now. and i think i'm even more convinced of that now that i've returned we,
4:06 pm
we really witness the worst of what humanity is capable of. and it's one thing to watch it on television. it's still devastating. was very hard to a witness through a screen, but to see it in person to see entire life shattered in an instant in person was was unbearable. and you know, in the emergency department, when you receive the most casualty, i remember one night having 2 fathers looking further dead spouse and dead children . each of them had one daughter that was still alive. each of those 2 daughters were critically injured. burnt, and we were humor substituting them. one of those fathers was walking around coverage and search and revel holding his back, he was injured himself and crying, he was verified. and he kept saying, you know, why, what did we do to deserve this?
4:07 pm
you know, my children are innocent and yeah, one of his daughters was actually a 2nd year medical student to she was killed as well. the other father was lying on the ground, bleeding, injured himself as a fractured leg. and his eyes were filled with sound and revel, so he couldn't open them. but you just saw the tears running down the side of his face as he just prayed over and over again. and i knew for a fact that the daughter we were trying to reach a state was not very, wasn't doing well. and he had already known that his wife and the rest of his children had been killed. and that, that was not an uncommon occurrence by which in at lee and it's only tiny town the who were the only smart. yeah, certainly you went to just just for our viewers to understand you went to one of the few hospitals that is still functioning. barely functioning in gaza. tell us
4:08 pm
a bit more about the location where you are and what the conditions were like in the hospital. and certainly, so just for contacts, the majority of the hospitals in, in the gaza strip has been either directly targeted and deceased or indirectly put out of service through the destruction of roads. it'd be bombarded in the very close proximity direct sprat's office. the hospital is one of those hospitals that had been besieged, had been a targeted, the staff had fled, many of the staff and now come back, it's functioning again, it's a smaller hospital. the 2 largest hospitals in gaza are understood. foss little in the north, and most that hospital who i'm sure many of users have watched and both of those hospitals have been besieged and targeted. uh so smaller hospitals like an officer hospital have had to take the role of these larger hospitals and are functioning as
4:09 pm
large referral facilities, which they're not at all equipped to do as a hospital is working well of of capacity. it's packed with patients in the emergency departments in the core, a doors on the stairwells, and it's also filled with internally displaced persons. and so it's a very busy hoss, relatively small, very, very busy work, caring for some of the 6 patients, right in the gaza strip. when there's a mass casualty nearby, lots of hospitals and didn't buy last, so we receive a lot of the most casualties from that, from that area, from hon, eunice, and of what a mass casualty arrives. we, we don't have to space the human or the physical resources to care for the patients . so they're, they're cared for off and on the floor. right. with the resources that are not sterile because we don't have stero feature kits and, and we get the stereo tools that we need and their care tanya are in a very
4:10 pm
t audit overwhelmed fashion because there is no mass casualty protocol in the world that is equipped or prepared to deal with this type of, of mass casualty that sure. it's not just an ongoing. let me ask you briefly because we, we would just be forcing on the latest child desk in gaza because of malnutrition and, and you were the recently talk to us about the children of god. so right now and what they're experiencing, we've had so t people die as long as attrition in, in recent weeks. what, what is it like for children? what did you see? what did the children tell you while you with it? yeah. um. so we spend the full 2 weeks in the hospital, so i, i did not make it to the north of gauze. i, i know the situation is much more dire there, that a dated by that has just self because of city. so it's you know, more in the central area of gaza and,
4:11 pm
and we had multiple children in the hospital who had lost their entire family. some, some of them lost their family while we were physically there. and one child whose face had been the side of his face and neck, had been blown off. he was in the hospital and he arrived as an one of the casualties in a, in, in one of the mass casualties. and when he arrived, his sister was on the stretcher next to him. 96 percent of her body had been burnt . both of their parents and all of their siblings had been killed. and he kept asking for his family while we were trying to stop the bleeding and care for him, because that the area that had been blown is where a lot of your vital vessels are. and he could see his sister in the bed next to him. but he didn't know it was the sister because he couldn't recognize her. she was so badly disfigured, unburnt. yeah, she alternately, by 2 days later he whispered to me, following day, when i went to visit him,
4:12 pm
i have a feeling my whole family has gone to heaven and i wish i had died too and gone with them. i have nobody left on this earth that i that i love and obviously a very difficult thing. yeah. to hear from anybody but certainly a child and this is not an exception. there. there is a child in the hospital who is living in the hospital with a fractured leg and external fixed eaters and his family were killed when they were trying to flee the north. he's being cared for by strangers and, and he lives in the hospital. i don't know what's going to happen to him and imagine the project or the week it's it's, it's just listening to you describe the what, what you saw and, and you know that the stories of these children is, is absolutely hot breaking. dr. tania. thank you. as always, it's so good to talk to you and, and thank you for the work you're doing and gaza. tanya hi, address on a pediatrician with medical aid for palestinians joining us there from i'm on.
4:13 pm
thank you very much. i a thank you for having me. they were on armed and waving wife lives before is really soldiers open fire. been their bodies, were both those entre 0 has obtained video showing the unprovoked killing of 2 palestinians. in garza, these are the army says it's investigating a warning that some maybe just rice, 5 images in this report from honeymoon. in roswell, these, an armed men are trying to return to their homes in northern garza. the only way to get there is a long the beats west of garza city. near the both around about south west of gauze, the city is really forces are deployed a palestinian man approaches these various soldiers. he raises a white flag, an international sign of surrender, and his regular troops allowing him to approach safely. meanwhile, the other young man turns back to where he came from. he appears to run back,
4:14 pm
raising a white flag. here the 1st man disappeared from the view in the forty's. then his really soldier use name or our vehicle, the cheese down, the young man walking away from them. he waves a small white flag at them, but his white flag does not prevent the soldiers from opening fire in hand at close range and is available. those are arrived on the scene. and here we see the body of the 1st man on the ground in a final indignity the giant. both those are shovels, the 2 bodies and bears them in san and letter. these rarely soldiers attempted to conceal the execution. the whereabouts of the groove of palestinian witnesses is unknown. how mazda has cold days, really armies action. he is a crime and is a feeling today knighted nation and the international criminal court. to take urgent action to stop the systematic killing of the palestinian people. as they say,
4:15 pm
it is, these fire agreement must include the right of palestinians to return to their home safely without being shot at by israeli troops. tiny mcmullin via the rough uh southern garza. well, we have correspondence on both sides of the story. in a moment we'll get these really reaction from him. the south fulton occupied east jerusalem. but 1st, honey, my hold is in around 5 for us in 7 guys. a honey, not the 1st time we're seeing such disturbing footage the execution in broad daylight of on, on, on threatening palestinians. what more have you found out about this incident in what has been the reaction say a yes folly. this is not the 1st time it just happens to be one of the couple other document. a video of israeli soldiers are gone, the ground committing any of the crime against palestinians as described by
4:16 pm
a statement made by rights. a group organizations here in the gaza strip the, the footage that we looked at very, or if it can cause the wave of tonics then concern and overly fear population here in goal. very crowded off by city for the lives of remaining family members and relatives. and loved ones in the northern part of the city, not only from the in forest is tar vision to hydrogen, but from the fact right now that they can be executed with cold blood. and it's really military does everything possible and, and it's power to can still do the crime and not do anything about it. and that's what's going on right now. people here will look at the footage of do on, on civilian, go to try to get to their homes in the northern part and gaza city where shots and where, where executed. and then there were both those and buried under the pile of theirs and letters and this out last week for more on our and civilian. and we're trying
4:17 pm
to get to their homes in the eastern part of it, of hon. you and as inspect the cheer level of destruction, cost to their residential home and their house when the work at targeted by uh, jews, missiles fired by a drones. and in fact, these ran a military also committed a similar crime against its own captive in the gaster wouldn't have enough time to verify the characters and the identities of the people that they were shooting at. but what it looks like as we heard from one, right, the group here in rough estimate, the day is really military trained to shoot and killed and not to verify. yeah, honey, thank you very much for that honey. my whole live there in a rough, a 7 guys or less crossover to occupy these chosen. and some of the have to sign hotels. they have the, any common reaction from these ready authorities to, to this disturbing footage of an apparent execution. i just need a has reached out to these really army and received
4:18 pm
a response that said that a thorough and precise assessment is needed in order to see what exactly happened in this incident. they went on to say that quote, the video is edited and does not show the full context. the ended the statement by saying that the video is now with the appropriate body who will process it. it is worth noting that in the nearly 6 months of this war, israel has not once admitted to an unlawful killing of a palestinian inside of gaza, as though more than 32000 people have been killed nearly 75000. others injured and not to mention the thousands that are still trapped under the russell. additionally, these really army has a pattern of absolving themselves in any sort of investigation or statements deflecting the blame. we've seen this repeatedly, not just throughout this war, but throughout the entirety of is really military activity in the palestinian territories, but especially seems to be swore in gaza began the list of is really of these
4:19 pm
really is absolving themselves of any blame is simply too long to list but at this point in time these really is are saying that they are looking into the matter and really will be following up with them. poly. thank you for that honda honda sound who live for us there in. okay, right. east jerusalem. let's discuss this further. now with all, marcia care who's israel and palestine director with human rights watch is joining us from amman and jordan. thank you very much. from our for being with a seal reaction for us to this video. what's the most shocking aspect of it? how many violations were committed? here? a look. i mean the video is shocking. human rights watches documents in numerous times over the years. these really government gunning down, people waving white flies in 2009. we released a report where we documented the killings of 11 palestinian civilians waving white flags including 5 women and 4 children. of course there was an opportunity for those acts of like, uh,
4:20 pm
you just turned in your segment. they were statements that they wouldn't be investigated, but ultimately nobody was held to account. and we again as noted in your program earlier, this is really hostages. who at escape are also gone down waving white flies. and again, we see this is incident taking place on today. it shows the disregard for palestinian life, which is a flagrant by these really government. and on top of that identifies again that these really government continues to not only block palestinians to return to their homes that they were expelled from the 1940 insight israel prover. but even to return to their homes with then gaza that they've been forced to flee in recent months. yeah. how does it say, oh my there is convincing evidence in, in real time, and there has been throughout this for and yet there's been no adverse reaction from the international community. what is it going to take for countries like the us to stop overlooking this is really abusive. a look. i mean there funding,
4:21 pm
i believe, been double standards and i think it's been deeply um, you know, united states has quite frankly, failed here to rain, to stop sending weapons terrain in um is allied. he's really government as it commits atrocities every day in the gaza strip. we've seen other states like south africa take the mantle of human rights by bringing the case to the international court of justice, accusing israel genocide. we've seen some governments even in europe, belgium, in ireland that have taken stronger positions in recent months. it's not over the lives of millions of palestinians still hanging in the balance. they are starting to be small shifts that are taking place in places like the united states. it's, it's not enough, but there's, you know, but, but you know, it needs to change because ultimately as many as i have died from air strikes high from other level killings, people are dying of starvation and that could get much worse and the days weeks
4:22 pm
ahead. but in the meantime, nothing is changing. what will they ever be? accountability and justice for palestinians and all these violations that israel is coming to there must always be a struggle for accountability. accountability i've worked in, in places around the world, very difficult context. it doesn't always come right away in many cases, impunity last for years and for decades. but the struggle must continue. we do have mechanisms in place. the international criminal court has a formal investigation. the international court of justice has this case on genocide. there is a one condition of any breed. there is a separate advisory opinion. international court of justice is preparing on the occupations. there are mechanisms. what's last thing is political will, but we do see mobile more voices around the world, demanding justice and accountability. and it's time that those voices translated to change and government policy that allows for the necessary accountabilities take place. thank you so much for talking to us. oh, marcia, care israel and palestine director for human rights watch live back on the line. we
4:23 pm
appreciate your time. thank you. awesome morehead on this, i'll just share and use our, including in the us divers, recover the bodies of 2 workers from the baltimore bridge collapse. as investigators began examining the ship's black box and in support staff. carrie was his emotions on his sleeve. optimal behavior from one of his wor, is, teammates has coming up in force place over the stain out of well, he's un official say they are gravely concerned about the worst thing. humanitarian crisis in eastern democratic republic of congo government troops are battling on groups including m. 23 fighters in mineral rich areas in the east. and 23 has taken control of several towns and is threatening the provincial capital of north cable from in school. not the case of conflict have displaced more than 7000000 people.
4:24 pm
gabriel is on to has moved from you and headquarters in new york. in recent weeks, the m 23 has made significant advances, expanding territorial control in fighting against the congolese military. been to k to the secretary general, special representative for the country said the security situation is deteriorating rapidly and the humanitarian situation is reaching near catastrophic levels. so the more did not feel the need for more than 7 point. 1000000 people have been displaced in the country. that is 800000 more people since my last briefing was about 3 months ago. to 3400000 people now suffer from food and security, which means one, not a full companies are suffering from malnutrition. d. r c's ambassador to the un called on the security council to take a stronger stand against rwanda. widely believed to be supporting the m $23.00
4:25 pm
as huge. and it throws these above us as a judge we do when faced with a lower repeat offender. the security console has to cross the rubicon of impunity just to impose on dwanda the sanctions that are commensurate with its repeated criminal offenses. but the rwandan ambassador said it's for rudy and the d. r. c, that are at the root of regional tensions, according to the group of experts on the data, see most countries of fighting alongside the f. d. a genocidal melisha against implementing city in an attempt to end a political program through media settings. to run that next do so that's a very to said yesterday, this is why we built for the cut insect, you get the issue has to be dissolved politically. among the formulas office of people come said a delicate moment as the un lead peacekeeping force known as a new sco, is pulling out of the country. at the request of the congolese government,
4:26 pm
the un said the 1st phase of the withdrawal should be complete by the end of april . and all the peacekeepers will be out by the end of the year gabriel's on the how does it at the united nations in new york? for more on the situation in d r. c, let's speak to david monkey, who is the world vision director for eastern d. r. c is joining us from as don't go in the democratic republic of congo. thank you so much for being with us. can you tell us about that? the humanitarian situation 1st in the east, they was already an existing crisis before this race and flare up of fighting. how much more is it worse now? it's got markedly worse. what we've seen since the beginning of the year is i believe over $600000.00 internally displaced people, many of whom are going into gone and they're going from violence and fighting and aggression to campus that simply don't have enough to meet the growing needs of the children and families, and as such, were really transferring people from
4:27 pm
a fairly violent situation to something that is very difficult, stressful, abusive, and exploitative, and as such. so many people who are being displaced in the merits or in caps are facing new challenges, many of which are really affecting them psychologically physically and many other things. it's very difficult. what sort of challenges precisely are they facing these cam? so they've been numerous reports of gender based violent and so on. can you tell us a bit a bit more about the challenges the, the civilians facing these caps. and there's a myriad of challenges, of course, one of which being just simply the volume of people who are looking for basic services, whether that's food assistance or that's helping nutrition. and as you would know that a protective and safe space, a lot of these kids are encroached upon by on groups of people have negative coping mechanisms. and as such, the concerns of the brakes and a very high level of sexual exploitation and abuse is a key concern for us as the manager and community. yeah,
4:28 pm
the latest reports from goma, which is virtually cut off from the rest of the country. a very worry, they are a force that i'm 23 rebels are advancing to the city. if that happens and, and you know, the city is run over by m $23.00. what would be the consequences of that? i think what we're seeing right now is a greater encroachment on these areas around drama. mm hm. which is resulting and getting a higher number of civilian casualties you're seeing in the camps themselves. there's concerns over bombardments, a lot of the amount of training actors. we're losing our access to space in the worst case scenario is going to being taken itself. again, we looked at a situation where the needs with the sky hi, there would be clear concerns about is there not portable water or the food to eat is or appropriate security for the population. and really just not enough resources to get their rates responses humanitarian enterprises, which is really defined by a lot of resources available. david, eastern d r. c has been in
4:29 pm
a state of conflicts for more than 20 years. now. we've got more than a 100 on groups fighting government and regional tools in this part of the d r. c. how does the international community solve this conflict? how, what does it do to bring it to an end? and i think ultimately it's a matter of years of good faith and dialogue between the different actors which would help towards bringing the more sustainable piece in the meantime, there is so much going on in terms of just front of me front level needs. again, i bring up the fact that sexual explanation, abuse, protection issues, lack of assistance, are all things that people are basing a need for right now. so as we look towards a better solution, i would say that's a matter of political well and dialogue sustained over time. there is so much that needs to be done today and tomorrow and, and this week. david, thank you very much for taking the time to speak to us. david monthly is from world vision, joining us from his own go in the democratic republic of congo. thank you. time
4:30 pm
. not for a check on the world. why the here on ologist era, his car had loza exceptional heat to set a new con, magic record in central america will get there in a moment. first to south america, and the heat continues to dominate the story across the north, down in the south. it is a west picture, but very hot dry and blustery winds, those conditions in venezuela having helped wild fires that have broken off in parts of north of the country. and the heat continues as well in ecuador for the south of this. that's what we're seeing, the west of the weather, a rash of storms affecting central parts of brazil, putting into bolivia and bringing very wet conditions to the coast of rain in rio over the next few days. but it is an improvement as we get into the weekend. so a rush of thunderstorms affecting the north of cheer. they will bring some very heavy down pools. but for the south of this, it is a little bit dry. it was also sunshine for areas of origin, tina,
4:31 pm
and sunshine and heat is a story for central america. we had an old time and you marched a record set in guatemala. the heat continuing to pump across will central areas over the next few days. when we also see some very wet weather, we've got a trailing weather system pulling across florida. that's going to bring some pretty intense thunderstorms to western cuba 1st day to friday. a camera. thank you very much. still ahead on the news our festivities and the shadow of rising is really restrictions. we look at the new to these to celebrations in occupied is true. smith and the doctor says this john, assigning is back in the spotlight this time on the side of a building. details coming up in support with jim relates to stay with us. we're back after a very short break. the reporting from the action. have you have a great winning hearing this

4:33 pm
welcome back and recap of our top stories on this island is here and use our a 6 year old boy who has died a severe mind nutrition in gaza, almost very cheap. palestinian children have died of malnutrition and dehydration since these are as well on guys, but the guy is really forces are accused of using starvation as a webinar for a team of international doctors and guys, i see they have witness catastrophic scenes in hospitals as a result of these routes from bomb and they say there is a constant stream of interest policy and children needing treatment by understaffed and over with medic. and he's really ami says it's investigating the shooting of to on, on, out as to means in gaza. ouch is here a has of pain video showing the killing of the men while they were waving white
4:34 pm
flags of surrender. the bodies were then hotels. no island is backing south africa is genocide case against israel at the international court of justice. the irish for administer says these really war in gaza and demoss attacks, and these are last october both represent blayton violations of international humanitarian law. it's 2 months since the i c. j ordered israel to stop any acts that would violate the genocide convention. south africa has accuses ran of failing to abide by that. ok. that's bringing our senior political on this my one but china from on this. so my won, i island joining south africa's case. there's been growing support for palestinians and for this case, the international criminal justice are these national court of justice, i should say. but is it making a difference on the ground? look, it's very important that i, the governments are getting involved, not just people because what they've seen over the past 5 months is that the social
4:35 pm
movement for justice in palestine is growing exponentially. but the governments are staying behind mostly because of their relationship with the united states or any one given what's the power, right? but the increase, they were saying the likes of highland, spain, belgium, and others joining in. and that's important because now it's happening on the official level. now, what's important about tyler in the particular? because there is this cliche about palestine being bod, you know them, you know, these people in the middle east is ancient when they have the, you know, jews, and muslims, and whatever. what, what island in south africa are bringing into the table is no, it's not about middle east, and it's not a box out of drew's thought about it. somebody to an anti somebody that's about power and it's abuses. it's about colonialism. it's about sutler calling. it is, it's about displacement injustice, just what the irish has gone through for millennia under british. oh,
4:36 pm
just like what the south african has gone through in terms of racism apart, pay those, so on so forth. so it's very important to universalize the injustice in palestine. i think the likes of island, south africa, spain, belgium, and others do exactly that. you say it's important for governments to be joining in . and we have seen governments at the un security council approve passed this security council resolution, which call for an immediate sci fi in gaza. the americans abstained. the resolution passed them the less. but again, it hasn't made a difference on the ground, it's a resolution, it's a ceasefire call. only on paper, on the ground. israel continues. it's one guy. so what difference does it make it? this is the thing, right? there's a paradox here, and we need to bridge the gap or the kind of thing you know cause is gaining momentum. it's an incredible breathtaking explanation way from australia to canada, through africa in our life, in america, asia, and so on,
4:37 pm
